There's No Place Like Home (Victoria) Empty
PostSubject: There's No Place Like Home (Victoria)   There's No Place Like Home (Victoria) EmptyMon Jan 08, 2018 7:57 pm

Grayson took a seat in his normal spot behind the librarian's desk and sighed. Was it his third year here already? Time had flown, and yet it seemed like nothing had really happened.

Of course, much had happened. Terrible things had happened--two students had died at the end of last year, a good number of his colleagues had been let go and replaced, the ICWW affair seemed much too quiet...he couldn't shake the feeling that something was going explode very soon, and they'd have to deal with the fallout. But at the same time, nothing had really happened to him, specifically.

His life went on in the same old way. Over the summer, he'd officially moved in with his mother, selling his house in Ireland as it didn't serve much purpose--he was rarely there anyway. Now he was able to witness in close quarters how his mother's memory began to deteriorate. It was gradual, but noticeable enough to worry him. Not that there was much he could do. It was simply a side effect of aging.

He'd kept up with the Summit as best he could, but it was all suspiciously hush-hush. Something horrible had happened, that was all he knew. Other than that...well, the days went by and blurred together. How he wished he could go back a decade and forget all of this responsibility. How he wished he could run off to the Himalayas, or the Andes, and do something exciting--something that felt worthwhile and rewarding. But he supposed everyone had to grow up and settle down at some point, and it seemed his time had come.

So here he sat, for his third year in a row, sitting in the same chair at the same desk, organizing the same old bookcases, and adding new names to the same old record books. He wondered if this is what it felt like to have a midlife crisis.

There's No Place Like Home (Victoria) Empty
PostSubject: Re: There's No Place Like Home (Victoria)   There's No Place Like Home (Victoria) EmptyMon Jan 08, 2018 10:08 pm

Being back at Hogwarts had it's perks. For one, Victoria felt like she was sixteen again, fresh in the school from Salem Academy and ready for her new adventure. Almost nothing had changed since she'd left, and she found that oddly reassuring as she made her way to the Library.

The Library had always been home, and though she could always go to one of many libraries in London, there was no beating Hogwarts' library. Well... except for Salem's library, but Victoria didn't have a free pass to the school to play on.

The smell of old books, paper, ink and otherwise the musty smell of the library came to her senses the moment she stepped through the door. Her smile was enough to light up the room as she thought back to the Wizard of Oz. "There's no place like home..." Victoria mused aloud to herself in that moment, letting out a soft laugh to herself as she moved further in to the library and looked around.

Upon noting the librarian -- who had been replaced since she'd left -- Victoria made a beeline for his desk and waited for a moment before she spoke. "Hi there, my name is Victoria Newbury, I was asked to give a talk here today, which I've done. My brother Jake is the Defence Against the Dark Arts professor here, and... well, I was wondering... I know this is a little bit out there... but I was wondering if, perhaps, I could get a library pass, despite not being a student, or a professor, on the proviso that Jake will bring the books back to you." Victoria asked, knowing this was a very big favour to be asking, but if you didn't ask, you didn't get.

"Oh, and, for the record, I'm a total book nerd, no books will be harmed in my possession, and, should any come to such an unfortunate demise, I would pay for the restoration, or replacement of the book in question. Though, I can assure you in the twenty five years I've been here, I haven't ruined one book." Victoria explained, overly bubbly, and obviously at ease with talking.

She looked to the librarian expectantly, hopefully, waiting for his answer.

PostSubject: Re: There's No Place Like Home (Victoria)   There's No Place Like Home (Victoria) EmptyMon Jan 08, 2018 11:15 pm

Grayson glanced up as someone approached, turning his full attention to the unfamiliar young woman, his interest piqued by the new face. While he didn't recognize her, there was something about her that reminded him vaguely of...someone. He didn't have time to put his finger on it before she started talking.

He gazed up at her, eyebrows slightly raised as she freely dispensed all of the information he could possibly be looking for without him even having to ask. He sorted through all of the information in his mind, nodding his understanding as she told him who she was, what she was doing there, why she looked somewhat familiar (he thought he'd heard Jake mention his sister as some point--he could see some family resemblance), what she needed from him, and, as a side note, why he should trust her, and even her age. It seemed she'd thought all of this through before coming in.

He took a moment to process her request before he responded. He certainly believed her when she said she'd take good care of the books, and he really had no problem with giving her a pass, but he wasn't entirely certain of the school's policies regarding this sort of thing, as it had never happened to him before. That, and her request seemed...well, rather an unnecessary amount of work for one visit. He tilted his head to the side and leaned back slightly in his chair.

"I see," he started slowly. "Well, while I would certainly trust you with your own library pass, Miss Newbury--nice to meet you, by the way--I am assuming this is a one time visit? I think, unless you plan to return with relative frequency in the future, it may be far simpler just to sign out whatever books you need under your brother's name. That would make things easier to keep track of, and," he leaned in somewhat conspiratorially, "to be honest, I have no idea if I'm allowed to give you your own pass, so this should hopefully bypass any regulations that may or may not be in place, of which I am currently unaware."

He glanced sheepishly at the door, as if expecting the headmistress to walk in at any moment, before looking back to her with a playful expression.

There's No Place Like Home (Victoria) Empty
PostSubject: Re: There's No Place Like Home (Victoria)   There's No Place Like Home (Victoria) EmptyTue Jan 09, 2018 9:32 pm

Victoria had never been anything short of 'full on'. In her mind, there was no point in doing anything unless you were going to throw yourself in to the situation fully. This did, of course, not work for everyone. Some people found her intimidating -- an idea that made the witch laugh softly because she had never, ever, been intimidating in her life -- and some people found it refreshing.

Whatever someone's opinion, though, it did nothing to lower the young witch's enthusiasm for life.

She watched the librarian in the moment she'd expelled all the information she'd decided he would need, trying to contain the smile as he seemed to look at her with a slight bit of surprise. Or, that was what Victoria took the raised eyebrows to mean, anyway, as she waited.

"It's lovely to meet you, too..." Victoria replied, holding out for an inclination of the man's name who sat before her. "Oh, and please, call me Victoria." She added, because there was no need for such formalities with this conversation.

For a moment -- only the briefest of moments -- Victoria believed that the librarian was going to deny her access to the library when he explained that seeing as she was here on a one off. But, as he explained she could use Jake's pass, her features lit up in the most excited of manners. Especially when the man before her leaned in with a conspiring look on his features, bringing a soft, melodic giggle from the witch's lips.

"Oh, believe me, I can do that. I don't believe my brother has ever taken a book from the library in his life!" Victoria explained, a fond smile on her lips. Jake had never been much of a reader, always joking how she read enough for both of them put together. Victoria could see what he was saying, but she'd honestly hoped he'd get better with age.

"Would you need Jake to do anything to warrant such requests? I mean... he won't say no, but, I wouldn't wish to get you, or him, in trouble with this arrangement! Oh, and do you need to see who I am?" The witch asked, because she didn't want him to be in trouble for letting just anyone in. Putting her bag on the man's desk -- with care not to touch any of the books or paperwork currently occupying the space, Victoria started to look for her purse.

"Grayson," the librarian supplied when Victoria left her greeting hanging. "Victoria, then," he corrected himself, smiling softly. He hadn't expected her to care much for formalities--after all, he knew her brother never did--but it was always better to be safe than sorry, and, well, he was raised to be polite.

Her face lit up when he said she could check out books under her brother's name, and he chuckled. He couldn't remember the last time he'd seen someone so genuinely excited about books--it was rather refreshing. He imagined if he were a more expressive person, he'd have made a similar face when he'd first arrived as the librarian. In fact, he was fairly certain he had worn that exact expression when he'd arrived for the first time as a student. Life, it seemed, had not worn down Victoria's enthusiasm the way it had his. It made him glad, in a way, that not everyone lost their excitement when they grew up.

He laughed as she joked about her brother, knowing there was some truth to it. Jake had come in once or twice, but he only remembered because those occasions were rare enough to be noteworthy--he could probably count them on one hand. "I've got the records to prove it," he nodded in mock seriousness.

Grayson shrugged when she asked if anything needed to be done. "If you think it's necessary, you can ask his permission, but I don't imagine he'll mind. The system is fairly relaxed. Basically, I'll just sign anything out under his name--maximum is five at a time--and I'll expect him to return them within four weeks. I doubt anyone is going to check and verify that it was really him. As long as he knows, and doesn't plan to check out anything himself, you should be fine."

Personally, he didn't think verification was really necessary--he trusted her as much as he trusted any of the students--but he shrugged and followed protocol. "I suppose I probably should. Do you need help finding anything while you're here?"

"Grayson, lovely to meet you." Victoria affirmed once more. The man before him suited his name, Victoria felt as she took him in. Not that she often found people to not suit their names, but she liked Grayson's.

The joking nature Grayson took on whilst speaking of Jake meant that Grayson was quite comfortable, and Victoria could believe that her brother's records would show he wasn't much of a reader. "I honestly do wonder, some times, how he managed to do so well in school." Victoria mused, shaking her head at the idea. Jake wasn't stupid, oh no, but he was missing out on so much for his lack of reading.

"Oh, of course I'll ask him. It would, after all, be a fraudulent transaction if he was not aware of it's undertaking." The lawyer explained with a small smile. "Something that I do not wish to have put against my name, my career would be in flames for such a thing!" Though, of course, Jake would never bring the action against his younger sister, there was nothing to say that someone else in the school would work in the same mannerisms as her brother.

"Five at a time, four weeks." Victoria echoed, showing she'd heard that point well and truly. "Nothing has changed since I was here, then." She mused.

"Actually, I was wondering if there was a travel section, or, more specifically, a travel section with a book that would highlight good magical places to visit -- and I mean magical and in magic, not the kind of magic that lights up a child's face." Victoria explained, wondering if Grayson would have the book. "I haven't been on holiday for a very long time, and I was thinking of, perhaps, going with my niece and nephew in the holidays. Jake might come as well, but I think he might like some time on his own. But, I also think it's a good idea to go somewhere where there is a rich history, you know, so the children can learn, too?"

Whether Grayson would understand, however, was another matter entirely.

"I suspect he learns by doing," Grayson replied. "I find Defense Against the Dark Arts is generally grasped better that way." While he certainly loved books, Grayson had to admit there were some things they simply couldn't teach you, and he hardly looked down on anyone for not enjoying reading.

Grayson laughed easily at the woman's joking tone. That's right, he remembered, she was lawyer, wasn't she? She'd be careful with the rules then. "Ask him, then, that's probably the best thing to do."

Grayson's eyes twinkled humourously as he replied to Victoria's comment. "Nothing's changed since I was here, either, except that we have a few more books. And a new librarian."

He perked up as she described what she was looking for. They didn't have a travel section, per se, as not many students came in looking to book a flight, and while he did know a couple of decent suggestions, that wasn't what had piqued his interest. Better than book suggestions, he had personal experience. Someplace magical, with history. That wasn't too hard.

"Well, there's always Germany, if you're looking for something relatively close by. If you'd like to go a little farther, Turkey is lovely, and has what you're looking for. If you really don't mind distance though, I'd suggest Nepal. Kathmandu has plenty of magic and plenty of history, and Pokhara is absolutely stunning, as well as tourist friendly. Lalitpur has incredible cultural celebrations--if you want rich history, and especially artwork, go there."

He stopped himself before he got too excited, realizing she hadn't actually asked him for his travel advice, she'd been asking for book suggestions.

"But if you want to do some research yourself, Hans Mikkelsen has a couple books in aisle three on the bottom shelf."

PostSubject: Re: There's No Place Like Home (Victoria)   There's No Place Like Home (Victoria) EmptyWed Jan 17, 2018 8:50 pm

"Indeed, he does. But, that does not excuse him from reading for fun." Victoria pointed out with a fond smile. "Though, now he has his two children, he's learning to read with them." She joked softly, though it was quite clear Victoria was only playing, and was actually very proud of her older brother for the work he was putting in with the children.

Victoria let out a soft chuckle. "Oh, come on, you're... what... twenty eight, at best?" Victoria insisted as she looked at the man before her. He didn't look much older than herself, and if he said he was older than that, Victoria was simply not going to believe him for a moment. "Though, I think the change in librarian was definitely a good choice." Victoria added, not flirtatiously -- unless the man took it to be -- but in a genuine manner. Victoria doubted the librarian who'd been in charge when she was at the school would let an alumni take books they wanted.

When Grayson gave her advice, not in the form of books, but from his own knowledge, Victoria listened extremely carefully, putting the places to memory, with the pros and cons. Nepal would be too far with small children, she thought, so perhaps Germany or Turkey would be better with them. Turkey would be good for just a holiday, too, what with its warm climate.

"That's really helpful, Grayson! Thank you so much!" Victoria replied, taking all of that information on board with a few nods in between to show she had been listening to each and every suggestion. "You like to travel?" The witch asked of the librarian, though it was clear he did travel, Victoria found herself wanting to hear of his experiences.

Books were the centre of Victoria's world, but she also thrived on talking to people, hearing of their experiences first hand, and really getting to know them. After all, solitude in books was not healthy, and Victoria had always been the most outgoing book nerd anyone had ever met. Something which was not going to change today, either.

Grayson bowed his head to concede her point, smiling at how fondly the woman spoke of her brother. When he was younger, he'd often wished for a sibling, and he admitted he envied slightly how close the two of them seemed to be.

He laughed, flattered at her estimate of his age. "Thirty-five, but close enough. I'll take it." He waved off her compliment with a bashful half-shrug. "Well, thank you. I do suppose Madam Pince was rather...severe."

He was relieved when Victoria appeared to appreciate his little spiel--not that she seemed the type to grow annoyed by such things. In fact she seemed quite interested in what he had to say, a fact that made him vaguely uncomfortable, as he was not normally one to talk about himself. At the same time, however, she was quite easy to talk to, and he figured if there was any particular sort of person who could get him to reveal his thoughts, Victoria was probably one of them.

When asked if he liked to travel, he hesitated for a moment before settling on a vague, "I've been here and there." If she asked for more information, he'd supply some details, but really, it was hard to determine which ones were important. He'd had quite a few interesting experiences, and he really wouldn't know where to start if someone asked.

He wasn't hiding anything, per se, he was simply rather private by nature; a side effect of a quiet childhood without very many friends. If someone were truly interested in learning about his life, he wouldn't avoid the subject, but he hadn't met very many people intent on getting to know him.

PostSubject: Re: There's No Place Like Home (Victoria)   There's No Place Like Home (Victoria) EmptyWed Jan 24, 2018 7:03 pm

"Thirty five?" Victoria asked, surprise taking over her features in that moment. "Wow! You look great for your age!" She complimented with a warm smile. Shaking her head at the realisation of Grayson's age, Victoria let out a soft chuckle at the mention of the previous librarian. "Oh yes, couldn't get away with being a day late with Madam Pince! But, she was very good at her job, and I commend her for all of her work."

With Grayson's short answer, Victoria decided to opt for another way in to the conversation. "I went to Mexico with my girlfriend once." Victoria explained, not even thinking of any repercussions upon announcing she had had relationships with women. "When I was in my... fifth year, yes, fifth year. Over Christmas time -- it was so strange being in a warm country at that time of year, I must say.

"My friend showed me some of their culture, it was wonderful, and over the years, we celebrated some of the festivals linked with Mexican culture. I'd love to go back, in truth, the people were wonderful. And, truthfully, I didn't get to explore enough of the magic." Victoria explained. She had to speak to Allegra about that sometime, but the witch was very busy with her own career, and Victoria didn't wish to be a burden.

"Apart from that, though, I'm very sad to say I haven't had enough opportunity to travel." Victoria explained with a soft sigh. "Where is your favourite place that you've travelled to?" Victoria asked, eagerly awaiting the answer.
