Piano Man (open) Empty
PostSubject: Piano Man (open)   Piano Man (open) EmptyMon Oct 09, 2017 1:55 am

Kenny wandered the university halls, twiddling his wand between his fingers. It was probably a dangerous thing to do--he might accidentally explode something--but he didn't care all that much, and neither did Scott. The university was a large building, and his focus at the moment was getting the lay of the land, creating a mental map as he walked.

He looked to be in the arts wing of the building. He peeked into open classrooms, taking note of the easels in one room, and various musical instruments in another. The hall was basically empty, with only a couple of classrooms in use at the moment. He ventured further down the hall until he found himself in a completely isolated corridor, with a door slightly ajar on his left.

He pushed it open to find a small classroom, empty except for a baby grand piano in the middle of the floor. He stepped inside, shutting the door softly behind him.

He hadn't had the chance to play the piano in months. Scott didn't play. Or at least, he didn't intend for Scott to play. Details like that were sort of arbitrary, he supposed, but in his mind, Scott was not musically inclined.

Kenny, on the other hand, felt himself drawn to the center of the room. He itched to play something--it was one of the only things he genuinely took pleasure in. He weighed his options. The hallway had been empty when he'd entered the room. The door was closed. He could play quietly, maybe. There was only a slim chance of being caught...and even if he was, what did it really matter? He'd never publically confirmed that Scott couldn't play the piano. He could just add it to the character if need be.

He strode slowly toward the piano, brushing the keys lightly with his fingertips as he took a seat on the bench. His hand automatically strayed toward middle C, and he pressed down, testing it out. The piano was in tune, and the note had the rich sound that came with an expensive instrument.

Without thinking, his left hand began to play a series of chords and arpeggios that naturally rolled off his fingers. He wasn't really sure what he was playing at first, and then he fell into a waltz-like rhythm and remembered where it was from.

"Piano Man," by Billy Joel. He'd learned it when he was fourteen. With this realization, he shifted his hands and started from the beginning.

As the music swelled, he decided it might be worth it to make Scott a pianist, at least as a hobby.

Piano Man (open) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Piano Man (open)   Piano Man (open) EmptySun Oct 15, 2017 11:01 am

University was simply another manner in which Jacques could avoid the Palace for a while longer. His responsibility within the house were looming ever closer. The need for a wife, growing with each day. He was not adverse to either one, of course, but he wanted to both of them in his own time. Once he was much more attuned the to the world that he wanted to know.

Experience, after all, would help him much more than books, and Jacques was on the road to finding many and more new things.

The Auror course toed the line of teaching them about the Dark Arts in too much detail. There was a line, that all aspiring Aurors were led to believe was right. They were taught how to defend themselves from the Darkest of Magic, they were taught how to spot it. But, very rarely, were they given the opportunity to use the magic. To Jacques, this didn't matter. He instead threw himself in to the research area of the library, finding the books on Dark Magic, and reviewing them page by page. The wealth of knowledge he'd acquired whilst being at University had come from his personal studies, and not the course on which he'd enrolled.

His practice came in a secluded classroom.

The classroom was empty for all except a baby grand piano. The room had spoken to Jacques on a level he was not quite comfortable admitting to. Having found it early in the term, Jacques had claimed it, before writing home to his Maman for her compositions. It would go without saying that this was a suspicious request to lay upon his Maman, Jacques was not musically talented. He took after his Papa in that manner. Whilst Jacques might not be able to play, however, he could appreciate good music, and his Maman was one of his favourite composers.

The pieces of music had come only a few days later, and Jacques had worked out (after a few misdemeanours) how to make the piano play the pieces whilst he worked on his own work. A blissfully tranquil setting, for a young man working on his own research in to the Dark Arts.

That had been the reason the Clement heir had arrived at the deserted classroom that afternoon with his satchel laden with Dark Arts and piano music alike. Only to pause at the door because music was already playing from the room. Jacques listened for a few moments, taking in the notes before naming the song in a soft whisper beneath his breath.

For a moment, he thought of leaving -- Jacques had worked at making a name for himself in the University for all of five seconds. Upon people finding he was not only one of the richest people on the student roster, but also one of the most eligible bachelors in Europe, he'd earned himself a place amongst the more popular people. Catching Jacques with his music sheets and personal research was likely not something he should be caught with, but the Clement heir threw caution to the wind.

The person playing the piano was good. He could be wasting an opportunity if said person was of interest...

Pushing the door open and letting himself in, Jacques was quite disappointed to find a male sat at the piano. Even still, the young man closed the door silently, and stood waiting for the man playing to finish. After all, you could never interrupt someone when they were playing, it was one of the most heinous crimes known to man.

Kenny heard the faint thud of the door behind him, and he started a little. He quickly recovered his composure, hiding his initial reaction. He skipped half a beat in his playing, but that was the only discernable sign that he had noticed the intrusion. He was on the last few measures anyway, so he played it through to the end, held the last note for a few beats, then placed his hands in his lap, and slowly turned his upper body to face the newcomer.

His eyes briefly flicked over the young man, subtly sizing him up. Handsome. Fashionable. Heavy looking satchel, wonder what's in that...good posture, respectful behavior...ah.

Rich kid, was the first thought that came to mind. The young man who had entered the room was obviously wealthy--he had the sort of self-assured air about him that came with money and high social status. From the way he carried himself, he was probably a pureblood from some powerful European family--all prim and proper, and a little stuck up. Kenny couldn't pull any names from the top of his head. Being a muggleborn from America, European wizarding politics were not something with which he'd had many chances to familiarize himself. He was satisfied with this assessment though. His quick glance, no more than a second or two, gave him enough to work with for the moment.

"Hello," he said, with a small, bashful smile and a jaunty, little wave. Inwardly, he held back a resigned sigh at being caught--this was not his ideal situation. He'd have to amend his plans. Oh, well, no going back now. He'd just have to roll with it. He quickly assessed all of the opportunities that were open to him now, and decided it certainly wasn't the end of the world.

He swung his legs around to the other side of the bench, and turned the rest of his body to face the man completely. His face conveyed the appropriate level of modesty and embarrassment at having been walked in on during something that had clearly been meant to be private.

Piano Man (open) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Piano Man (open)   Piano Man (open) EmptyMon Oct 16, 2017 7:08 pm

There was the smallest of stammers in the play -- so small that many people might have missed it. Jacques, however, had listened to his Maman play from a very young age, trying to capture her talent for his own, but falling up short when he simply did not have the ear for music like her. But, even an undistinguished musician could pick out when the flow seemed to pause if only for a moment.

His appearance had, therefore, been noted, but Jacques held his silence for the moment.

Only when the other boy had finished playing did Jacques' eyes focus in on him. Music tended to put him in an indistinct ease, though Jacques would never, ever admit to this. The other boy was taking him in, making assumptions, Jacques was sure, before finally the single word of greeting was pushed forward in to the space between them.

It was lacking, in so many ways, and Jacques had to say he was disappointed. Hello after such beautiful key strokes was an offence to music, but Jacques kept that to himself, instead pressing something of a small smile to his lips, that never met his eyes, before replying. "Good afternoon." Jacques replied, not keeping his accent from showing in that moment.

Most people put two and two together when he allowed the accent to show more clearly.

"You play well." Jacques said, motioning to the piano as if there were a need to do so. "What piece was that?" He added. The more classical pieces were the ones he knew. His Maman's compositions were the ones he heard more often, and the piece that had just been played was not one that fell in to one of those categories. Curiosity was piqued, even if Jacques wanted nothing more than for the young man before him to get out of the classroom that he'd claimed as his own so that he could study.

But, rudeness was not tolerable, even if it was kept inside.

Piano Man (open) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Piano Man (open)   Piano Man (open) EmptySat Nov 04, 2017 5:35 pm

The man was French, and his smile was insincere. As Kenny created a file in his mind for the newcomer, he vaguely wondered what the stranger was doing in this classroom, and it occurred to him that perhaps he himself was the intruder. The young man looked as if he'd come here for a purpose, and, perhaps he was imagining it, but Kenny got the vibe that his presence was not welcome.

Well that was interesting. What business might young Mr. Fancy Pants have all alone in an empty classroom? Kenny was willing to bet that bulging satchel had something to with it. It was looking quite suspicious.

Then again, perhaps he just came to play piano. That would be the most likely explanation, after all; though it was also the most boring. Kenny found himself rather hoping there was more to it. He would be slightly disappointed in the man if there wasn't.

"Thanks," Kenny responded with a half smile to the man's comment, rubbing the back of his neck as if he wasn't sure how to take a compliment and was feeling a bit awkward. Scott was humble, and also at least a little bit attracted to the fashionable young man. "Piano Man, by Billy Joel," he answered the man's question, acting slightly aghast. "You've never heard it? It's a classic."

"Do you play?" he asked, nodding slightly toward the piano.

Piano Man (open) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Piano Man (open)   Piano Man (open) EmptyThu Nov 09, 2017 8:53 pm

The awkwardness of the boy before him denoted a man who was not sure of his capabilities and how to have them addressed. Jacques noted that and denoted quickly the man before him was not of any where important. Still, that did not mean he couldn't give the man a little bit of respect for not being unafraid to show his emotions in that moment. Jacques simply waved away the thanks for the compliment, because he hadn't given praise where it was not due.

The note of the song that the other man had been playing rang somewhere in the back of his mind. Some kind of classic pop, or a genre similar to that. Now he'd been given the title, he could vaguely place it. "I prefer the more classical pieces, and a number more of original pieces." Jacques explained in way of why he did not know the song for a moment.

"It's not the kind of music played at home." Jacques answered the question of how he could not know the classic. Whilst the explanation might have been a little bit of a let down, it was the truth. Why would you listen to the common folk when you could listen to your Maman play some of the most intricate pieces in the world? To explain that, though, was not something Jacques was willing to do, so he let the subject go, instead.

"Non," Jacques replied to the question of whether he played. "Music was never my forte." He added, though it was not with the embarrassed sense that many people might admit to their downfalls, no, Jacques had a confidence in what he could and could not do, and he owned it.

"You've been playing for some time?" Jacques asked, because the man before him was very good, and that kind of talent did not emerge over night. Whilst Jacques might not play himself, he liked to hear of those who could. Like his Maman, his favourite story of his Maman's playing history had to be his Uncle's birthday party, where she had played beautifully for the whole family, only for his Papa to send something crashing to steal her away.

At the young age of five, his Maman had the attention of the Palace listening to her masterpieces, and that... that was quite some feat.

Piano Man (open) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Piano Man (open)   Piano Man (open) EmptySun Nov 19, 2017 4:59 am

Kenny hummed his understanding as the other man explained his musical tastes. He could respect that--he himself had started out learning classical pieces, and he enjoyed them just as much as anything else.

He'd started learning piano at the age of four, taking lessons until he was nine, when he fell out of favor with his godparents. When he'd first moved in with them, his godmother had even roped him into playing hymns for church once or twice. Of course, even when he no longer took lessons, he still played. By that point, lessons were unnecessary--he knew how to read music, and could pursue whichever pieces he wished on his own time. He had a keyboard in his room, and he could plug earphones into it and play whenever he wanted to without disturbing anyone. He even had a few compositions of his own.

He shrugged at the explanation. It made sense. European purebloods were weirdly old fashioned, for whatever reason. He turned halfway in his seat and absentmindedly drifted his hands over the keys behind him, playing a few measures from the beginning of one of Chopin's Nocturnes, his eyebrows raised at the other man as if to say, "like this?"

As the Frenchman admitted that he was not a pianist, Kenny perked up, his interest piqued. Though the only outward sign he gave was a small nod--musical talent was not for everyone--inwardly, he returned to his previous line of questioning. If the man was not here to play piano, then what business did he have in this room? He was now willing to bet that the answer would be quite intriguing--and he was itching to know what was in the man's bag.

He nodded at the man's question. "Fifteen years now." No sense in lying about a trivial detail like that. With details, he found, it was best to stick as close to the truth as possible, to make things easier to remember. Otherwise, he would have to keep track of every word he said, and that was far too risky.

"I'm Scott, by the way. What's your name?" The introduction was innocuous, but his gaze lingered on the other man's face in way that could perhaps be construed as too interested, if one was attuned to that sort of thing. The man was wealthy and attractive, after all, and Scott would be testing the waters right about now.

PostSubject: Re: Piano Man (open)   Piano Man (open) EmptySun Nov 19, 2017 4:27 pm

The shrug that came from the other man irked Jacques slightly. It was terrible for posture, the first of his dislikes for the action, but also, it was an ineffectual way of showing what you meant. But, the Clement heir made no outward show of dislike for the action.

No, instead he took in the actions of the other man as he played the first few measures of a song Jacques knew all too well. His Maman had often tried to teach Elenore the beauty of Chopin at the Palace, and Jacques had heard the song butchered in so many careful ways by his younger sister. But, what Elenore didn't know was that they all knew how well she played the song when she was alone. A fond smile touched Jacques lips in that moment, almost as if he was transported back to France...

Almost, the key strokes weren't quite so delicate as his Maman's, and Jacques caught himself just before the other man looked to him. The quirked eyebrow denoting the question. "Something like that." The Frenchman replied, denoting that the other was right, but not quite in the same ballpark as those he knew to play at home. It wasn't a slight, no, Jacques knew the other way talented, but even his unmusical ears could tell the difference.

The length of time with which the talent had been formed made sense, you didn't, after all, play an instrument with that much intricacy without practicing for a very long time. Jacques simply nodded, though, there was nothing to say, or add to that line of conversation.

"Jacques." The Frenchman replied to the question of his name. "Jacques Clement." He finalised, because even if the boy couldn't piece the French accent and his name together, there would be no way of not knowing who he was now. Not unless Scott lived under some kind of rock.

But still, it remained, that Jacques was in the awkward position of needing to use the room, but knowing that Scott would likely want it to. They were, he supposed, at an impasse.

Jacques Clement. He felt he should know that name. At the very least, he felt that Jacques felt he should know that name. It sounded...familiar, but then, French names all tended to run together in his mind. He hadn't had a reason to do much research on French houses. Whatever he may know about the Clement family came from passing remarks and rumors, nothing that he could distinctly recall. He'd already guessed, of course, that the young man came from some important pureblood house. That was probably enough information to go off of for now. Specifics didn't seem necessary.

"Nice to meet you, Jacques Clement," he said with a slight smirk. Specifics or not, he knew one thing: Jacques Clement was quite a pretentious name.

There was a slightly awkward silence for a moment as the two men faced off across the room from each other. Jacques had obviously wanted this room for himself. Tough. Kenny didn't feel like leaving. Not until he knew what the other man was doing.

"So," he started. "If you don't play, what brings you to this fine room, notably devoid of anything except a piano?" His tone was joking, but the question was genuine, and laced with something akin to a challenge.

Jacques gave the other man a small smile when he repeated his full name. The smirk playing on Scott's lips, though, was a curious thing, under which Jacques was not sure what he saw in the other male. However, he let the moment pass, perhaps the other male was simply unsure how to deal with the news, and Jacques would not hold that against him.

The short pause allowed Jacques time to formulate matters in his head in to an organised manner, filing them away for later use if needed.

The question that came brought a small laugh from the Frenchman's lips. He should, really, have expected such a question. There was the option to lie, but Jacques was not that kind of person, so instead he went down the avenue of truth. He was confident enough to pull off the truth, anyway, so it would not hurt him.

"I come here to study, a number of different subjects that don't always get the full appreciation in the Auror course. Too many people believing that Dark Magic is inherently bad. Being here means nobody can judge the literature I am reading, or believe me to be going 'bad'." Jacques explained. Having an interest in Dark Magic often led people to believe the person had a problem, but Jacques had had an interest from a very young age, an interest that had been encouraged because it was something he could do a lot of reading and research on, building on the wealth of knowledge he already had.

"The piano is... a reminder of home. My Maman plays the piano so very beautifully, she's composed a few of her own pieces, and I've devised a way to make the piano play such pieces on it's own." Jacques explained. Many people might have tried to ridicule that matter, but after hearing of Jacques like for the Dark Arts, he was sure Scott was not make any assumptions about Jacques that would suggest the Frenchman was weak.
