Clara & Klaus - The Untold Story: Prologue Kajol-scarf-hairstyle_295x200_1530005172037

Sometimes, being a psychic really sucked.

Though perhaps that was unfair, it wasn't her gift that sucked so much as the unreal expectations people attached to it, the witch reflected as she made her way up the steep fancy steps to Kit Harrington's Playboy Mansion that was a clear sign of overcompensation. Never in a million years would the witch have imagined herself getting used to the heat of California yet here she was, three years later and still in this state prone to randomly bursting into flames on a whim. This was not part of the plan. California was not part of the plan, Kit Harrington was not part of the plan, this huge monstrosity of steel and glass was certainly not part of the plan.

And the drunk that had shown up a week ago to take up couch space and who was now Clara's responsibility was certainly as far removed from the plan as the psychic could have thought of. It just went to show, psychics were the ones least aware of what was coming at them in the near future. Because Clara Kent had not seen Klaus Weiber's arrival, she certainly hadn't foreseen his request to crash at his high school buddy's place and not in a million years would she have seen Kit doing what he'd done next.

Unwilling to cancel his assignment shoot in Alabama, the photographer had packed up his shit, shown up at Clara's doorstep, asked if she could look in on his mate over the next week while he was away and then fucked off without sparing a single thought to her own schedule. Of course, over the last three years, the witch had learned this was something of a pattern with Kit. And the only thing saving him right now was the realization on her part that he didn't do it intentionally. He had just always had the world bend to his way, so why would he start considering someone other then himself now?

Reaching the main door, Clara dug around through the dozen or so charms hanging from her leather belt, having stashed the keys to the place there earlier. Her short skirt didn't allow room for pockets and her chunky grunge boots were already in use as storage spaces for sharp objects. Psychics didn't make enough money to live in areas where one could go to sleep without the security of a switchblade under their pillow, and Clara refused to lose hers while she was away from her temporary abode.

They had told her to use her wand, but it had never felt right. No  twig emanated the same kind of security the cold steel of a knife did.

Finally locating the keys, the pixie haired witch let herself in, her short dark hair contrasting wildly with the tie dyed headband around them. The witch had come straight from work, work in this case being assuring a trembling, nervous Hollywood Agent that there was no future possibility of his new wife cheating on him. As if a mere psychic could prevent something like that. But it was easy work for good money, and Clara was in no position to turn it down.

Just as she found herself in no position to turn down Kit and his outlandish requests.

Despite it being nearly three in the evening, the house was dark.the air conditioning had been turned up to full which Clara couldn't really blame Kit's house guest for given the heat but otherwise, there was no indication of something moving around the house. Putting the containers of Chinese food she had picked up on her way over on the entryway shelf, Clara took a moment to take stock of her surroundings. And sure enough, after a minute or two of careful listening, she heard what could pass as snores coming from the living area.

Usually, Clara was nicer than this, she didn't enjoy causing pain or unduly irritating people. But today was not a usual day, today she was tired, hot and pissed and here to babysit a man she barely knew thanks to another man she couldn't seem to say no to. So Clara did something she would not have done under any normal circumstances.

Pulling at one of the charms around her belt, the witch brought the chained object to her lips. inserting the silver whistle between her lips, Clara blew on it as hard as she could, announcing her arrival to the lazy bastard who was still having a lie in halfway through the evening. Once assured that her noisemaker had done the trick, the short woman walked into the living room, her boots clunking with each step.

Clara & Klaus - The Untold Story: Prologue Tumblr_pn3d8tCRza1wt78hy_540

If anyone had told Klaus Weber a year ago that he would be moving to America, he would have thought they were crazy. If they'd told him he would be sleeping on Kit Harrington's couch in a modern mansion in the middle of California, he would have laughed out loud. For one, he hadn't seen Kit since they'd graduated Hogwarts almost a decade earlier. For another, he would never willingly subject himself to California heat unless he had absolutely no other choice. A year ago, he would have had no reason whatsoever to even consider going to America - he had a career, a family, a life in the UK.

Yet here he was. No job, no family, no life, just the pristine modern couch cushions in Kit Harrington's ridiculous mansion. And he hadn't laughed in months.

Kit himself was long gone, having headed off to some southern state - Mississippi? Alabama? - for some photography thing or other. He'd told Klaus to make himself at home, offering the mansion's full selection of amenities to keep him occupied while the photographer was away.

Truth be told, Klaus hadn't even looked at most of the rooms in the house. He was sure Kit probably had everything from a swimming pool to a personal movie theater but he really wasn't in the mood to check. Instead, he'd restrained himself for about half an hour after the man had left, then walked straight to the kitchen to rummage through the liquor cabinet.

When he'd turned up on Kit's doorstep about a week ago, he'd made at least some effort to be on good behaviour. About a month before that he had sent his old friend a letter asking for a place to stay while he figured himself out, telling him that he intended to find his own place once he got to America. A few weeks, a month at most, he'd said. Kit had been extremely accommodating, and Klaus had remained completely sober for almost three whole days to show his gratitude.

The gig was up now. He'd restrained himself as best he could in Kit's presence, but he had the house to himself now and Kit had specifically told him to help himself to whatever the place had to offer. So instead of stopping himself at three glasses like he'd been doing for the past few days, he went ahead and drained the whole bottle of single malt because, hey, fewer dishes to clean.

And when he passed out on the couch an hour later, he did so under the impression that he would wake up on his own time to an empty house and cabinet full of scotch.

So when a shrill, earsplitting whistle shattered the silence, Klaus jumped so violently he tumbled off the couch and landed with a solid thud on the hard floor.

"Ow fuck shit bloody--what the hell was that for?!"

He scrambled to his feet, clutching his throbbing head and swaying dangerously before steadying himself on the coffee table in front of him. Disoriented, his hand scrabbled blindly for his wand, patting his empty pockets until he finally looked down to see that it had fallen on the floor and rolled most of the way beneath the couch. He quickly snatched it up and turned to brandish it somewhat dizzily in the general direction of the source of the offending noise.

It took him a long moment to process the young woman who had stepped into the room. She'd been around to visit before, earlier in the week; he remembered her face. She was Kit's friend. What was her name again? Kara? Clara? What was she doing here?

Wait. Kit had mentioned something about her coming around to check on him at some point. How many hours had it been since he'd left? How long had he been asleep? What time was it? His head hurt. He let out a soft groan, lowering his wand as he rubbed at his bleary eyes. He swayed again, taking a step back and all but collapsing back onto the couch as he slowly got his bearings.

"Ow fuck shit bloody--what the hell was that for?!"

The confused mumbled string of oaths rang like music to Clara's ears as she entered the living room, her charms clinking gently against each other as they swayed on her belt. Her dark eyes took in the roused visitor glaring about him like a bear in the woods, trying to locate his wand and upon finding it, diving to the floor to retrieve it. Perhaps he had tried to hide it, perhaps he hadn't bothered. Whatever the case, the bottle of whiskey rolled out from under the couch, nothing left in its glass confines.

"Good morning, sunshine," the Seer greeted cheerily, the grin plastered on her face more sarcastic than sincere. "I got breakfast." Holding up the bags of Chinese food as proof of her visit here, Clara moved towards the kitchen, silently indicating that the visitor should do the same. She'd only met him once before. And that too because she had simply happened to be there when he showed up. The other time she had merely heard him grogging about in the next room when she'd come to drop off some of Kit's stuff. This would be the very first time they actually exchanged proper words which was problematic.

Clara was the least diplomatic person in the world, and whatever problems this man was going through, she probably had neither the patience nor the understanding for it. The joke was on Kit here, leaving his so called friend with the least sympathetic person he could possibly have found.

The witch didn't look behind to ensure he was following her, merely listened for his lumbering gait. the food was unpacked slowly and the boxes transferred into flat cardboard plates to eat off of but before they could eat, the young woman ran a critical gaze over the newcomer.

"Wash up," she instructed shortly, making sure he understood it to be an order and not a request. "And use the mouthwash." Perhaps English people were polite enough to not point out that present company stank of booze but Clara was not English by any stretch of the word. If she was going to be in charge of keeping him fed, keeping him clean was surely the next thing on that list?

Unpacking the chopsticks last of all, Clara placed a set neatly towards his side of the kitchen counter, trusting him to use the utensils or find a set of spoon and fork on his own. It was about time she had a chat with the stranger, and she hoped for his sake his answers were enough to satisfy her curiosity.

Clara & Klaus - The Untold Story: Prologue Empty
PostSubject: Re: Clara & Klaus - The Untold Story: Prologue   Clara & Klaus - The Untold Story: Prologue EmptyTue Mar 12, 2019 11:31 pm

Klaus shot the woman a petulant glare in response to her peppy greeting. Her voice was doing nothing for his headache. As he took his first real look at her, noting her rather unique sense of style, his eyes fell upon the whistle dangling from her belt along with a multitude of other trinkets. She was without a doubt responsible for his rude awakening and the lingering ringing in his ears. His glare intensified.

She ignored him, holding up a bag of takeout and leaving the room. He tried to come up with some scathing response to call out to her, but his thought process was interrupted by his stomach growling. He realized he hadn't eaten anything all day. He huffed, frustrated by his body's betrayal, then reluctantly stood and followed the woman into the kitchen, slowly so as not to seem too eager.

He stopped in the entrance to the kitchen, leaning against the door frame and watching as she unpacked the meal. His stomach rumbled again as the smell reached him. He ran a hand through his tousled hair, messing it up even further as he yawned and blinked a couple times, trying to banish the grogginess from his mind. The woman made eye contact with him, and he raised his eyebrows as if to ask what they were waiting for.

He remained motionless in the doorway for a long moment after she issued her commands. He debated not complying, wondering what she would do, then figured it wasn't worth it. He didn't have the energy to fight right now. He rolled his eyes and turned around, trudging toward the bathroom down the hall where he kept his meager supply of toiletries.

He shut the door behind him and glanced at himself in the mirror. He looked...bad. There were bags under his eyes, his skin was pale, and his hair stood up in all directions. A light stubble was beginning to show on his cheeks and chin, though he had never really been able to grow a beard. He sighed, turning on the faucet and splashing some cold water in his face to wake himself up. He dried off with a washcloth, combed his fingers through his hair in a halfhearted attempt to tame it (to no avail), and then looked at the bottle of Listerine next to the soap dish. With another sigh, he decided there was nothing to gain from being difficult, so he uncapped the bottle and took a swig, swishing it about in his mouth for a few seconds before spitting it out in the sink.

He didn't know what Clara considered "clean," but as far as he was concerned, he had done as she had asked. He emerged from the bathroom and returned to the kitchen, picking up a pair of chopsticks and holding them awkwardly in one hand. It had been a while since he'd used chopsticks, but he thought he could manage. With hardly a glance toward the kitchen's other occupant, he dug into the pile of noodles on the counter before she could think about making him do something else first.

Clara & Klaus - The Untold Story: Prologue Empty
PostSubject: Re: Clara & Klaus - The Untold Story: Prologue   Clara & Klaus - The Untold Story: Prologue EmptyTue Mar 12, 2019 11:52 pm

Mr. Strong and Sullen returned from the bathroom in no better shape than he'd been before, but at least now Clara could inhale the sharp scent of mouthwash instead of whatever he'd been drinking courtesy of Kit. As the man quietly took his spot opposite her, reaching wordlessly for his chopsticks and digging in, Clara found her own obsidian gaze drawn to him, He made it even easier when he wasn't looking back, merely preoccupied with the meal. Picking up a dumpling with her own pair of chopsticks, Clara brought it to her mouth thoughtfully, observing the visitor so openly for the first time.

On the outset, he looked the type. She was well aware of that type given where she came from. He had shown up out of nowhere, given no concrete date for how long he'll be crashing here and the moment his buddy had left, gone for the most pricey bottle of liquor he could find. Yes, Clara knew the type indeed. Kit was an idiot, that was no surprise, but that's why he had Clara. And she wouldn't let someone take advantage of her friend like that.

Once he was finished with his own helping, the psychic wordlessly pushed her own portion of food towards him too, happy with her sole dumpling for the time being. Truth be told, the witch was more tired than hungry, and her ego refused to get food for a man unless she was getting some for yourself too. So here they were, sitting in front of several containers that he would have to work through while Clara watched him like a particularly interesting client.

"You can go put on some coffee when you're done," she finally spoke, putting down her own chopsticks to indicate she was finished with her meal. "I take mine black, with three sugars." Getting some Joe in him would serve the dual purpose of further waking the man up as well as flushing all that alcohol out of his system. Perhaps it would help with the hangover too if he was suffering from any. Clara needed him more conscious for what she had in mind next.

"Then we can have a little chat, you and I."

Clara & Klaus - The Untold Story: Prologue Empty
PostSubject: Re: Clara & Klaus - The Untold Story: Prologue   Clara & Klaus - The Untold Story: Prologue EmptyWed Mar 13, 2019 12:35 am

Although the sweet and salty sauce mixed terribly with the spearmint Listerine aftertaste in his mouth, Klaus felt significantly better with something in his stomach. He hadn't realized quite how hungry he was. He glanced at the digital clock on the microwave and saw that it was 3:00pm. Thinking back to the last time he had eaten, he realized it must have been about 20 hours ago. No wonder.

Clara remained silent as he ate, something Klaus would have been grateful for had he really noticed. Truth be told, he essentially tuned out her presence entirely as he mechanically shoveled food into his mouth, regaining energy with every bite. When she pushed her own portion toward him, he took it wordlessly, the pounding in his head slowly subsiding as he ate.

He finally looked up at her as she broke the silence. His eyes traveled to the coffee machine on a nearby counter as he finished chewing. He wondered momentarily why she couldn't just make it herself, but he was in a better mood now that he was no longer hungry, so he didn't push it. She had brought him food after all, so he figured she couldn't be all bad. And besides, coffee sounded like an excellent idea.

A little chat. That sounded ominous. He met her eyes warily, wondering if he should be alarmed. The thought occurred to him that she had barely touched the food herself, and it was probably very stupid of him to have eaten it without question. She was a stranger to him, no matter how much Kit seemed to trust her.

Not that she had any reason to be out to get him as far as he could tell, but he could practically hear Alastor's voice scolding him for his misstep. Constant vigilance.

He looked down at the remaining dumplings, considering for a moment, then he mentally shrugged. So what if they are poisoned? At least I won't die hungry. He took another one and popped it in his mouth, wandering over to the coffee machine and setting it up while he chewed.

Besides, even Alastor's constant vigilance hadn't saved him in the end.

As the coffee machine whirred, Klaus returned to the counter and finished the remaining food while they waited. He set his chopsticks down when he was done, watching the last few drops of coffee fall into the pot and savouring the aroma that filled the kitchen. Then he opened a cupboard and grabbed two mugs, filled both of them, and added three teaspoons full of sugar to Clara's before handing it to her along with a spoon to stir. He took a sip of his own - black and unsweetened, the way God intended - then turned to face her, leaning his back against the counter.

"Alright then," he started, his soft Scottish brogue finally making an appearance. "Let's chat."

Clara & Klaus - The Untold Story: Prologue Empty
PostSubject: Re: Clara & Klaus - The Untold Story: Prologue   Clara & Klaus - The Untold Story: Prologue EmptyWed Mar 13, 2019 1:08 am

For a bum, at least the man had the decency to do what he was told. Or perhaps that was his entire plan? Make himself something of a convenience so his unwitting host never realized the friend he'd taken in for a few weeks would never leave. Clara had to give it to the visitor, if that really was the plan, it had a solid chance of working. Or it would have had a solid chance of working if she wasn't around.

Maybe this was why she was still in California? Because the universe knew that Kit Harrington was absolutely rubbish at looking after himself. Which begged the question of why the universe had chosen her to be his guardian angel, but of course the universe had never been kind enough to reply to her rather straightforward queries. If it had, Clara wouldn't be sitting in a place she couldn't afford in ten lifetimes, eating Chinese food beside a man she barely knew, trying to protect someone she never thought she would have to three years ago.

As Kit's guest positioned her coffee in front of her, Clara nodded a thanks. Picking up the cup, the witch warmed her fingers first, holding it in both palms before bringing the dark liquid to her blood red lips. There were very few genuine ways to fuck up coffee in these fancy new machines so the sweet, bitter liquid slid down her throat deliciously, making her close her eyes for a single moment.

"Alright then," he started, his soft Scottish brogue finally making an appearance. "Let's chat."

The Seer's eyes opened even wider, the accent sending an unidentifiable tingle through her petite frame as she came to the realization that she hadn't actually heard him speak before. The first time they'd met, Kit had done the introductions and nothing much had followed that. The second time, she hadn't even seen him. He didn't sound like the kind of men she was used to, making her rethink her strategy.

"You're an old friend of Kit's?" she began, forming her words carefully. Or she would have if she wasn't Clara. "So you must know he's the stupidest person in the world, an absolutely buffoon," she continued without hesitation. Anything she said about the Harrington male behind his back, she could say ten times over to his face. "But do you know why he's a grade A idiot? Try and guess."

Clara & Klaus - The Untold Story: Prologue Empty
PostSubject: Re: Clara & Klaus - The Untold Story: Prologue   Clara & Klaus - The Untold Story: Prologue EmptyWed Mar 13, 2019 1:39 am

Klaus nodded slowly at the woman's first question. Clearly she was building up to something. She already knew he was a friend of Kit's - the man himself had introduced him as such when he'd first arrived.

At her next sentence, he barked a short, surprised laugh. That was not where he had expected this to go. Immediately, images of Kit from their school days flooded his mind and he nodded once more to confirm that the man was, in fact, an idiot more often than not. But then, they had all been idiots at the time. It was the 80's.

And Kit's particular brand of idiocy was one he remembered with fondness more often than embarrassment, so he almost felt the need to come to his old friend's defense. Then he remembered Clara probably knew him better than he did at this point, so she most likely understood without him having to say anything.

Her next question gave him pause. He had no idea what she was referring to at first, but she wanted him to guess, so he thought for a second, taking another sip of coffee. As his brain slowly came to life, he began to look for clues in her behavior that might hint at her point.

It probably had something to do with him, considering he wouldn't know much of anything new happening in Kit's life that wasn't related to his own presence. That and the fact that this "chat" felt suspiciously like an interrogation.

He thought back to her arrival. Although she'd brought him food, she hadn't been particularly friendly or gentle - he remembered the whistle with a wince - so he got the impression that she probably didn't like him very much. And, considering his own disheveled appearance and obvious recent drinking, he probably hadn't made a great first impression either.

All in all, he came to the conclusion that she most likely didn't approve of his presence in Kit's house.

He took another sip and swallowed before tilting his head, studying her face before answering. "Might it have something to do with him leaving me here alone with all of his stuff while he's off on the other side of the country?"

Clara & Klaus - The Untold Story: Prologue Empty
PostSubject: Re: Clara & Klaus - The Untold Story: Prologue   Clara & Klaus - The Untold Story: Prologue EmptyWed Mar 13, 2019 4:42 pm

Praise the Lord, the man was not as stupid as she'd first given him credit for. Though Clara was still not willing to admit she was being unduly harsh on the visitor, not until she could get a better reading of his motives concerning her friend. The witch eyed her gently steaming cup of coffee, pondering another sip against the possible danger of her going soft towards the guest because of his coffee making skills. Leaving the mug be for now, she turned her gaze towards him once more.

"Correct," she confirmed, the mock congratulations clear in her voice. "You see, where everyone else in the world is warned of stranger danger, Kit is off chasing butterflies for his camera. And even if he says you're not a stranger, I hope you don't mind if I don't readily believe you. You see, convenient friends dropping in to enrich your life ten years after high school don't always come with good intentions."

The witch spoke bluntly, the only way she knew how. There was no fear in her of the man running to Kit and crying about the way Clara had treated him. In fact, the witch herself had brought this out of the blue coincidence up with the photographer before, Only for him to shake his head and look amused at her suspicion. It was only when Kit refused to listen that the psychic had decided to go straight to the source.

"So what's your story?" she prompted, taking up the cup again but only to warm her fingers, she reminded herself. She would not drink another sip of the bittersweet liquid until she was sure he meant Kit no harm. "Daddy lock you out of your trust fund so you figured an extended beach vacation would have to do?" Despite the fact that he didn't look rich, Clara felt it was fair to deduce so. After all, he had gone to school with the photographer, and she was given to understand people who attended that fancy Wizarding school were the trust fund sort.

"And how long do you plan to crash here before the family reunion?" Because Kit would never ask a friend to leave. A few years ago, Clara would have taken it as a mark of being a  gentleman, but now she knew better. Kit Harrington was passive to a fault, he preferred for life to happen to him than to take any initiative to change it. Whether he'd always been like that or if the woman she constantly saw in his eyes had broken him, Clara didn't know. All she knew was that it left her to do the bad cop bits.

And right now, that included taking stock of the semi permanent house guest situation her friend had going on.

Clara & Klaus - The Untold Story: Prologue Empty
PostSubject: Re: Clara & Klaus - The Untold Story: Prologue   Clara & Klaus - The Untold Story: Prologue EmptyWed Mar 13, 2019 8:04 pm

Klaus saw why Clara was suspicious. He really couldn't blame her. He knew how he must look, showing up out of nowhere with nothing to offer, and clearly not in the healthiest of conditions. He suspected he probably was taking advantage of Kit's hospitality, at least a little bit, in that he hadn't made himself particularly helpful in his time here, nor had he actively been searching for a more sustainable situation. He felt bad about it, sure, but there was no way Clara would know that, and somehow he suspected she wouldn't care.

She was right, in every way that mattered. That didn't mean he had to like it. It had only been a week; he felt it was a bit early to be throwing accusations around. If he was still sleeping on Kit's couch in a month, Clara would have every right to be angry, but as it was, Klaus hadn't yet done anything wrong. He had told Kit he would stay for a month at most, until he found someplace else to live. He still had plenty of time to make that happen.

A nagging voice at the back of his mind - his conscience, perhaps - pointed out that he hadn't even started thinking about his next steps in any detail, that he currently had nothing lined up, and that it had definitely occurred to him that Kit would never actually kick him out. He had figured the guilt would get to him eventually, but now it looked like Clara would get to him first.

His face gave nothing away. She was right to be suspicious, but obviously he'd rather avoid the accusations if he could. He had no real defense at the moment, but he could probably come up with one if he stalled long enough. Rather than admitting to anything now, he simply settled for a careful, "I understand." And he did. In fact, though he suspected this woman would be a thorn in his side for as long as he stayed at Kit's house, he couldn't help but grudgingly admire her for standing up for her friend.

Any positive feelings he had toward the woman dissipated as she moved to a new topic of conversation. He bristled at the assumptions she made about his family, and his face settled in a guarded scowl. She was treading on thin ice.

"There is no family reunion," he responded, his voice clipped. "And I'll thank you not to make such statements in the future. I'll be gone as soon as I can find myself a house."

A house, not a home. He doubted anything would feel like home. The thought occurred to him that one of the reasons he was so hesitant to find his own place was because he might be lonely. At least with Kit he would have someone to talk to. Someone to distract him. He banished the notion before he could follow it any further. Now was not the time for wallowing in self-pity. He got the feeling he would receive very little sympathy from Clara.
