Kenneth smiled behind the scarf tied over his face and his eyes glittered under the hood shading them from view. He'd missed this while abroad. Even the danger of cursebreaking couldn't match the adrenaline of lying in wait during a Hunt.

Joined by his second in command, Brianna Griffin, and a dozen of his trusted Basilisks, they lay in wait at the top of a hill, surrounding a small clearing. Brianna wiggled over to lay next to him, keeping her rifle trained on the clearing, and Ken could tell that she was excited by the Hunt too.

"Bastards should be here any second," she whispered. "Our tip told us that there are five Aurors, plus the target. One of the Aurors is Pureblood scum as well." Though Ken couldn't see her face, he knew that her lip was curled in disgust. Though Brianna was a Muggle, her older brother had been Muggleborn, killed in the Second Wizarding War.

"As long as Cooke switched the Portkeys, we'll be fine," he whispered in return. "Now focus. Like you said, they'll be here any second. Try not to kill anyone but the Purebloods, though. Not yet."

The growing tension in the Auror office was palpable. Jake knew, even in his inexperience, that there was something growing. Well, he said inexperience, he'd seen a lot over the years, but this lying and waiting wasn't something he was used to. Clement had been growing tougher on them over the last month, and whilst Jake didn't mind the extra fitness sessions and such, he was growing nervous.

It had been, in complete honesty, a huge shock when Jake had found out about the fact he would be on the next mission. A top priority mission at that. The briefing they'd been given was that they were to act as an armed guard for a Pureblood Ministry Official who wanted to go in to hiding. The reasoning was not clear, but Jake took the orders without question.

Being assigned to the first group - the guard and not the decoy - had been the biggest surprise for Jake, but he'd pushed away those thoughts in place of professional thoughts. Preparing with his fellow Aurors, Jake readied himself for the moment, flanking the man who was going underground. Ready.

It was, of course, a shock to then see Clement before them, swapping the squads for an unknown reason only seconds before the portkey went off. The swirling of the portkey made Jake want to close his eyes, but he forced them to stay open, wand at the ready as they landed firmly on their feet the other side. The 'dummy' in the middle of them slipped, using Jake to right himself before the Auror squad closed the formation, eyes alert.

"South-West clear." Jake announced, as was his role. First to record, lowest ranked.

The echo of positions went by, trained eyes scanning the area and finding nothing.

"Travel formation." The order came only a few moment's later, and Jake moved to the 'target's left side, still ready as they readied themselves to move. Still alert, but almost certain they were alone...

Kenneth held up his hand to forestall his people when they would have fired as soon as the Aurors appeared in the clearing. Let them get comfortable first, think they were alone, safe...

Suddenly, his eyes narrowed, focusing on the man in the middle of the squad. Ken had grown used to spotting glamours and coverups during his years abroad as a cursebreaker. There was nothing more common than making a doorway look like a wall or a pit of spikes look like a perfectly normal floor. Only a truly experienced cursebreaker would have spotted the spell work, but to Kenneth, it seemed glaringly obvious.

Ken's temper flared white hot. How dare they swap his target, depriving him of the chance to rid the world of another piece of Pureblood scum? He dropped his hand in the signal to attack and immediately shouted "Avada Kedavra!" aiming his wand at the only Pureblooded member of the Auror squad. Hell, he might even kill the decoy for even pretending to be a Pureblood.

Kenneth was not happy, and somebody was sure as hell going to know it.

Jake couldn't deny his heart was beating faster. Yes, they were using this as a drill, a decoy, but they were still expected to do everything properly. The mere prospect that something might happen was enough to kick in the adrenaline. Eyes searching their surroundings, Jake kept half his attention on the man he was 'protecting' and half on their surroundings.

Clear, you are fine.

Another step.

Clear. You. Are. Fine.

Another step.

The sound of an unfamiliar voice rang out, and Jake turned just in time to see a familiar green light hurtle towards the group, pushing the 'target' to the ground to keep the exercise realistic, Jake threw up a Shield Charm and looked up. They would have to move, he knew that much, a Shield Charm would do nothing if another Killing Curse met them.

Shouts went up, and Jake had just enough time to see why. Garrett. Peeling his eyes away from his fallen comrade, Jake pushed himself to his feet, scanning the area for the source of the spell, but nothing.

"Loose formation!" Came the second command, and the whole group split up, making themselves less of a target. Passing the man in charge, Philips, Jake heard the order to leave Baines and help take down the delinquent.

Gripping his wand firmly, Jake moved away from the older man, shield still in place as a barrage of bullets flitted in to the clearing. "What the fuck?" Jake heard one of his team members call out, and he couldn't deny he was thinking the same as a shell ricocheted off of his shield.

Continuing to move, Jake lowered his shield, for only the briefest of seconds, sending a blasting charm towards the trees in the hope to throw the attackers off. His shield was back up only a moment later, still trying to locate their targets as the Aurors made a semi-circle around the place where the first spell had come from.

"Orders?" Jake shouted along the line, but none came, all of them were trying to locate the sources, but the group was good.

Kenneth grinned wildly as the Pureblood went down in a flash of green light. Spells from his hidden soldiers rained down on the Aurors and Brianna's gunfire only served to confuse and panic them further. It was something that he had noticed quite frequently; witches and wizards had no idea how to cope with Muggle technology. It was the influence of the Purebloods, he was sure, that led even half bloods and Muggleborns to shirk their heritage for the siren's call of magic

A blasting charm rocked the ground beneath them and Ken swayed, tumbling onto his side as chunks of tree bark rained down on him. He zeroed in on the Auror who'd shot the spell. He was one of the youngest, and the most junior member of the group, if Ken was remembering the Auror protocol correctly. Yet he appeared to be keeping his head the best. Signaling Briana and the witch who laid to his other side, he instructed them to focus on the only wizard on the field who appeared to still have a brain.

Ken could recognize prowess in another, even an enemy, and he respected the young Auror's skill. That would just make it all the more rewarding when he beat the group to a pulp for denying him his chance at the Pureblood target the attack was intended for.

As it stood, it didn't appear that the small group would last much longer. Outnumbered and scattered as they were, two of the other members and the decoy had already fallen to the Basilisks. Unconscious, not dead. Ken wanted to wipe put Purebloods, not the entirety of Wizarding kind. Waving his arm in a circle to get the attention of his men and women, he gave the order to advance, closing the circle on the two remaining Aurors.

The clearing was turning in to chaos, and Jake's heart was pounding, almost filling his ears. Though, he realised a moment later, that was the sound of gunshots being released in quick succession. Staying behind his shield, Jake looked across at his colleagues, looking for some sign of what to do, but they looked like they'd lost hope.

He saw Giles turn on his heel and begin to flee, but a stunning spell to the back. Please just be out cold. Jake thought to himself, worrying over his colleague as another took a hit. From what, Jake couldn't see. Panic was building, and he knew that if he didn't keep his head he would be next.

"Newbury! We need to fall back!"

Philips was calling the retreat, and Jake disliked the sound of that. It was cowardly, and they were better than a group of thugs who hid in the shadows. But even as Jake thought that, the figures emerged from the trees.

"Fuck." Jake murmured to himself, looking towards the two unconscious and one dead body of the Aurors. There was no way they could retreat without all of the colleagues, and they both knew it. But Jake refused to leave without them. He wouldn't leave them to be killed, or used in some sick show of power on the Basilisks behalf.

"I'm not going anywhere, sir." Jake called back to Philips, his eyes darting from person to person as they emerged from the trees. "We need to get the others back." He added, and he heard the other man scoff.

And then the crack as Philips disapparited.

Turning his attention back towards the attackers, Jake knew the best option was to run, but he owed it to his colleagues. He'd hope in the same situation they'd do the same for him. By now though, he was heavily outnumbered, and he knew it.

Rule One of Auror Training: Bring them in to custody first. Kill only as a last resort.

Sending a stunning hex to a person on his left, Jake threw up his shield and waited for another opportunity, aiming a second stunning hex towards the woman with a Muggle weapon. His shield went up again, but he knew he didn't have much more time before all angles were covered.

Throwing a third hex at the leader - or the man he believed to be the leader, Jake reassessed, trying to decide his next target...

Ken had to give it to the young Auror, he had guts. Even as his last conscious compatriot fled with a loud crack, the man stood his ground, seeming determined to protect his fallen comrades.

Idiot.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Brianna duck and roll as a curse shot towards her, but she wasn't quite fast enough and she crumpled to the ground. He would check on her later; it wasn't likely the goody goody Aurors had used lethal force.

Striding forward confidently, Kenneth himself didn't bother wasting the energy maintaining a shield, he only deflected the hex sent toward him at the last minute, sending it ricocheting skyward. In return, he disarmed the man, catching his wand neatly and snapping it in half.

"You," he said to the man in a low rasp, disguising the honey baritone of his normal voice, "Have been very irritating." He dropped the pieces of the broken wand to the ground. "We were hoping to take out two pieces of Pureblood scum today, and instead, we only got one, and one of little consequence at that." He kicked some dirt over the dead Auror.

"You got in my way." Kenneth turned back to the disarmed man. "I hate people who get in my way." Stepping within arm's reach at last, Ken drew back his arm and sent his fist into the other man's face in a lighting fast strike he had no hopes of intercepting. The Auror crumpled to the ground and Ken looked down at him dispassionately, drawing back his leg to kick the man in the ribs, repeatedly, before stepping back and allowing his Basilisks to finish the job.

Turning back to Brianna, he set about reviving her, ignoring the frenzy of his people beating the remaining Aurors senseless. His mission was a failure, but maybe not a complete one. One thing was certain; the Ministry would know to fear them when they were done.

PostSubject: Re: Thwarted (Jake) (PG-13, Violence)   Thwarted (Jake) (PG-13, Violence) EmptyFri Jun 26, 2015 10:15 pm

The moment he'd been disarmed, Jake knew he was stuffed. He'd mastered non-verbal magic, but wandless magic was beyond his capabilities. Without it... Well, he knew now he had to resort to Muggle forms of fighting, and hope they would level the playing field.

But, seeing his wand snapped in two, it felt like the air had been knocked out of Jake's chest. He felt cold in that moment, watching the pieces being thrown as if they meant nothing. Nausea hit the young Auror in that moment, but he refused to show his feelings towards anything. His fear, his worry for his colleagues. It didn't matter until the mission ended.

Or worse.

Jake shook that thought away though as the man before him spoke. Jake merely took the moment to survey his chances, but even he knew he was beat. Best to simply take it well.

Jake's eyes were defiant in the face of defeat, because he knew that whilst this battle might be won, the man before him had no chance in the greater scheme of things. Flippant comments came to mind at the comments the man was making, but Jake remained silent, jaw set, eyes forward.

And, perhaps in his naivety, it cost Jake the first blow. A hard blow to the jaw, sending him to the floor in a heap as his left hand came up to assess the damage. Blood was already pouring from somewhere, but that was of little consequence. Especially with a second blow to the ribs a moment later that made Jake cry out in pain. Sucking as deep a breath in as he could, Jake winced, but not comparably to the second blow that came.

And a third.

A fourth.

There was a pause, and then the pummeling continued.

Jake lost count of the blows, gasping for air and asking, no pleading, with them to stop.

Even Jake knew that there would be no respite, however, and the moment the blackness clouded his mind, he allowed himself to be consumed to leave the pain. Something told him that that place was the safest place to go.

Victoria would be there, something told him. And Veronika.

He just... had to let go...
