| Caelan let out a nervous sigh as he ran a hand through his hair and took his checklist out again. Two weeks ago, he'd asked his mother how to properly court a girl. She thought it was the cutest thing she'd ever heard, but didn't stop her from writing a seven page list of things to do. Which seemed utterly ridiculous considering she had a freaking baby to be taking care of and clearly didn't have time to go into depth about these things. His father's letter was an edited version that cut the seven pages down to two; a simple but honest way to be true about his intentions whilst trying for something a little bit out there. Okay that had been two weeks ago.
It took him two weeks to work his courage up to this point where he's ready to put the plan into motion.
Two weeks ago, he made a list of things based off his mother's list that would work as first date material. Mainly it was to be a picnic, just the thought of being alone with Evelyn set an unsteady drumbeat in his heart as he looked at the checklist.
- - simple foods; pasta salad, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches (in case she was allergic), and the candies he distinctively remembers her picking out from the first time they met
- simple drinks; bottled waters, Arizonas in bottled form (his mother's poison of choice), bottled pop drinks - simple conversation topics; why are you on a date with me? do you like me like i like you? let's be an official thing.
Caelan winced at his brain and slapped his hand against his forehead, willing the last thoughts out of his head. Those were not safe topics of conversation and definitely not things he was going to be saying aloud. He wasn't like Phil or Ellie: he had a filter that he employed 24/7. He had some sense of decorum, he thought bitterly, upon memory of Phil's reaction once he told him about his crush. Phil laughed and then pinched his cheeks like "ooh my little baby brother finally has a crush on a girlie". It embarrassed him to no avail especially considering he was the older brother of the three of them. Caelan gave a heavy sigh as he once more crossed everything off the checklist. He had ten more minutes until he needed to be ten minutes early for the date, so he took his slow time getting ready; just putting on a grey vee-neck and khaki cargo shorts with grey Vans to match, the basket in one arm as he made his way out to the field. There he set up the blanket on a comfortable patch of ground after making sure there were no surprise holes for snakes or gophers or faye circles to cause mischief.
As he settled there, he recalled the day he'd asked her; it was yesterday, so still super recent. Since they were in the same house, they sat at the same table. Using a charmed paper swan, with the wings reading in his handwriting: UNFOLD ME. Inside the swan was a simple question: Evelyn, go on a date with me? Don't tell me now, I think I'd throw up from nervousness if you did, but instead just come to the Black Lake tomorrow at 1200 to eat lunch with me. I'd be honored if you took me up on this. With that he bolted out of the Great Hall before he could see her response and had been a nervous wreck since. He kept his eyes forward as he pulled his knees to his chest and watched the water ripple, just waiting patiently for her. |
