Another day, another lesson, but this time it was with the older years. The older years were more fun, in some manners, because you got to teach them the more advanced branches of magic in the lessons you had with them. However, sometimes, they just weren't as interested any more. Still, Jake decided not to take a few people's lack of interest to heart as he wrote up the day's lesson on the board.

Non-Verbal Magic

Hopefully his students would appreciate today's subject. Non-verbal magic was a great skill to use. Not always something decided to use due to the often adverse effects to the lowering of the effectiveness of the spell being used, but definitely useful when you worked hard on it. And, not to mention, a popular topic in the O.W.L. and N.E.W.T. exams that were coming up.

Taking his seat upon the desk, Jake sat waiting for his students to arrive with mild anticipation.

"Hey, Neri! We are going to chill in the Common Room, care to join?" Anne asked her with a small smile. Nerisei sighed, because a part of her wanted to sit with the girls, even though she couldn't."
"Sorry, Anne, but I must be heading to DADA. Plus, shouldn't you be studying for the exams?" Nerisei asked, giving Anne a knowing look, before grabbing her things.
"You are no fun, Neri!"
The Ravenclaw witch let out a small chuckle, before exiting the Ravenclaw Tower and descending the stairs.

As per usual, Nerisei made sure to leave earlier, in order not to be late. The witch despised being late to pretty much anything, especially her classes. It made her feel so bad, that if by some chance she ended up being late, she usually skipped. Which ended with her being in a lot of trouble, but it wasn't her fault. She, probably, had some sort of OCD.

Reaching the classroom, Neri pushed the door open, sleeping in with a small smile. Another class with Professor Newbury. The man knew a lot of things, and Nerisei always enjoyed being taught by him. "Greetings, Professor!"
The room was, as usual, devoid of chairs or desks. Nerisei moved farther into the room, leaning against the opposite wall and waiting. Her eyes landed on the board, and an amused smirk touched her lips.

Non-Verbal Magic

Hell yeah.

Neri couldn't wait for the lesson to begin.

Sasha actually kind of did like DADA lessons. She had over years found these classes interesting actually even if she isn't sure how she would use some of the things that are taught in this class. Anyways the girl still did enjoy the lesson.

She walked into the classroom with a small smile on her face. For once the girl was actually in good mood. She wasn't really sure what did cause her happy mood today.

"Hello," she said with a small smile and looked over the board what they would learn here today. She has heard about non-verbal magic but she hasn't really herself much before. So she might actually understand a bit of it and she could tell this lesson might end up being an interesting one.

Since there was no desks and seats then she had to stand there and wait for others to show up. She hoped they could start soon. She was actually interested to learn more today.

While Clara was more inclined towards theoretical branches of magic, she couldn't deny that practical magic was probably more useful on a daily basis, and also an essential part of her exams. Because of this, she'd been trying to focus more on classes like Charms and Defense Against the Dark Arts, since the practical magic portion of her exams would probably be her weakest spot. Some things weren't meant to be learned through books, though that didn't stop her from reading all about the spells before she tried them.

She entered the Defense classroom and glanced up at the board. Her eyes brightened. Non-verbal magic was something she'd been interested in since her third year--she'd done quite a bit of research into the theory, and had even tried it out herself a couple times, though to no avail. She hadn't attempted since she was thirteen, so she hoped she'd gotten better since then as her magical abilities matured, but she remembered it being much harder than she'd anticipated.

She placed her bag in a corner of the room, and waited for the lesson to start, taking her wand out in preparation.

Janet huffed as she dodged students in the hallways. She was running, as per usual this school year, and had to focus on not colliding with any other student. She was aiming to arrive a bit early, so she would have time to get a bit of much-needed DADA studying in before the class actually started. She had barely had any sleep since she had returned to school and had lost some weight due to studying instead of eating during most meals. Her stomach grumbled at the thought of food and she huffed, pulling a granola bar from her bag and eating it as she ran.

She arrived at the class with time to spare and dropped the wrapper from her impromptu snack in the small bin next to the door. She glanced at the board and relaxed a bit. Lucky for her she had just spent all of the night before studying and practicing Nonverbal magic. She crossed the room and dropped her bag next to Clara's, pulling out her DADA book and going to stand in between Clara and Nerisei.

She gave the professor a small wave and said hi to both girls, as well as Sasha and a couple other people in the room before opening the book to read a bit before the class started.

The last DADA lesson had been fun and Alexei had enjoyed it so he decided to attend the next one as well, hoping eagerly that it would be something fun and new as well. Making his way towards the class, Alexei thought back on the past few days, the conversation he had with Elenore and the letters that he had been receiving from his brother.

His friendship with Elenore had survived the conversation, thankfully but the news from his brother were making the Slytherin awfully twitchy, having to keep looking over his shoulder and praying that no-one was pointing a gun at his head.

Shaking his head, he stepped into the classroom and nodded his head at Jake. "Hey Jake." The nineteen-year-old grinned slightly as he found an empty space in the classroom and looked at the board, his grin widening at the words on there. This lesson was going to be very fun that's for sure.

Jake watched as his classroom filled up with the familiar faces of the older years, smiling to each of them and returning the greeting in the usual manner. For all, except Miss Gerber. "Please, Nerisei, Jake is just fine." Jake reminded the witch softly as she moved to her own space. He had never liked the term 'professor', always feeling it made him sound too old, or much too qualified for the job he actually had.

Neither of which, in Jake's head, he was.

Soon, though, the bell rang to signify the start of the lesson and Jake got on with things with little preamble.

"Right, let's get cracking ladies and gentlemen! As you can see from the board, today we will be looking at non-verbal magic, no points for guessing what that means!" Jake explained with a soft laugh at his own joke. "But, that doesn't mean I won't pose the question of how non-verbal magic works? What does one do to perform non-verbal magic? What happens when using non-verbal magic as opposed to normal, verbal magic?"

There were a number of questions, and as usual, Jake expected as many people as possible to contribute to the lesson.

The moment the lesson started, Alexei easily focused on the subject, listening to Jake's voice and watching the faces of the other students. This was one subject that Alexei was proud to say he was the best at and no-one was going to say so otherwise. Not even people who felt entitled to be the best at something, even if they weren't.

"By using non-verbal magic, you have more of a chance to surprise your attacker. By not saying the word, your opponent has less of a chance to know what sort of spell you are using thus he also has less chance of being able to counter it. He'd have to remember what spell it is based on the colour and wand movement of the spell. And not many people care to remember what colours most spells are, not to mention going by wand movements is hard as well due to some spells having the same wand-movement but different colour."

There, Alexei's part to the lesson for the moment was done; he'd let the others have a chance in answering the other questions instead of going ahead and doing it himself.

The lesson started and she sighed softly to herself, closing the book. She wasn't sure how she was ever going to catch up. There was so much information to cover, in increasingly little time. She worried she would fail the exams coming up but she couldn't focus on that. She pushed the thought from her head for the time being and focused on the task at hand.

Jake had asked the class several questions. Janet somewhat knew the answers but stayed silent. She rarely spoke up in class these days, it was more important for her to listen and learn at this point than pretend she knew what she was talking about and possibly get it wrong. She listened to Alexei, who she recognized as being in her house, and nodded. She ended up speaking up, adding on despite the fact she should've stayed quiet and listened to what others had to say. maybe it would at least get her house a point. Who knows...

"Non-verbal spells are also more difficult to perform. Some are more difficult than others, like everything, of course. They require more practice and concentration. Some spells, when cast non-verbally, become less effective." She left it at that, not wanting to overcast anyone else, and wanting to hear what other people had to say.

Jake listened to the answer from Alexei and nodded along with the information that was being provided by the male. It was definitely the right way to go about answering the question, and Jake was impressed with the thoughts.

"You're quite right, Alexei, take five points for Slytherin for your answer." Jake replied to the wizard with a warm smile upon his lips. "Not many people, as you rightly pointed out, would know all the spells off by heart to be able to defend themselves from your incoming spell. It puts you on the upper hand, but, of course, the same came be true if your opponent can manage things non-verbally too.

As Janet added to the answer of Alexei's, Jake turned his attention to the witch and once more nodded at the answer that was being provided by the Slytherin. "Very true, this is why you must practice non-verbal magic before using it in potential hazardous situation." Jake replied. "Take five point, too, Janet!" Jake added, returning his attention to the class as a whole.

"Today, we will be working on non-verbal spells. I would recommend starting with a simple spell, such as the Levitating Charm, without saying the incantation. Start with small objects, and build up to larger ones. Then, try another, harder, spell. I am leaving this class open to all of you to explore at your own pace."

With that, Jake motioned them all away to give the lesson a go.
