Making New Friends (Toryn & Oliver) Empty

A new year. Oliver was definitely ready for it. He'd missed school, that was for sure, and as soon as he had time, he was going to go and find Serenity and find out how her Summer had been. For some reason, the unusual witch had been playing on his mind over the summer, but with no owl, he had not been able to contact her.

Hoping this wouldn't cause too much of an issue with the Ravenclaw witch, Oliver checked his watch. It was now past curfew, so he couldn't sneak off to see her, so that meant he was stuck in the common room. Moving to one of the comfy seats by the fire, Oliver pulled out his new Marvel magazine he'd acquired over the summer and flicked it open. Yes, he was probably a little bit too old for superhero comics,
but they were so good.

Losing himself in his comic, Oliver sat smiling to himself at the pictures. It was probably quite the sight, but he didn't care. Oliver was happy with his comic, and the rest was neither here nor there.

Cabhan slipped into the common room, a packet of crisps in one hand and his phone in the other. He had snuck into the kitchen even though it was past curfew, having been craving something salty to eat, not that it was hard; the common room was right next to the kitchens, and house elves (he'd been pleased to discover) were more than a little helpful when it came to wanting food. He'd almost returned with a whole basket full of crisps, had he not insisted one packet was fine!

School was back in full swing, and already he was enjoying himself. It was different, the Muggle and wizarding world, and it had been a challenge to find the line between them, but found it he had. Still, he couldn't get one Stephanie Richardson out of his mind throughout the holidays. He'd come to regret the words he'd said to her, and made up his mind to apologise as soon as he saw the Slytherin -- which he hadn't, thus far.

He could've always written her a note, but that wasn't his style; if you messed up, you faced it like a man (or a woman) and apologised face to face, unless it was absolutely not a possibility.

Someone was sat by the fire, and Cabhan did a double take, worried he was going to get in trouble -- but it wasn't a prefect. It was someone he recognised from around school and class, but never really talked to much before, aside from a few times here and there. Oliver, if he wasn't mistaken.

His eyes, though, went not to the boy but the comic, and a smile spread across his face. "Who's your favourite?" he asked, moving to sit on the chair opposite the male. Then, realising what he'd done, he gave a sheepish grin. "Sorry, I got carried away. Hi, how was your summer, etcetera..." He laughed lightly. "I couldn't help but notice your magazine, and my curioisty got the best of me. I personally like Iron Man."

Oliver hadn't heard the door open to the common room, too engrossed in the comic which was currently denoting a story between Captain America and Peggy Carter. Oliver had heard of a term called 'shipping' in the fandom, and his 'ship' was firmly with Captain America and Peggy - Steggy, he believed it to be called.

It was therefore quite unsurprising that upon hearing a voice, Oliver jumped slightly,
looking up at the person who'd just entered the room with mild alarm. He relaxed upon seeing it was only one of his classmates, and the worry on his features turned in to a small smile as he took the boy in.

Toryn Callagham, his mind gave him a moment later, remembering the name thankfully. "Has to be Captain America." The boy said without hesitation when he was asked who was his favourite.

The correction to his question before talking of niceties was one that Oliver waved away without a care in the world. "Don't worry. Marvel is more interesting than my summer." Oliver supplied with a small laugh, checking his page and then closing the magazine and giving his attention instead to his fellow Hufflepuff. At the notion of Toryn's favourite character being Iron Man, Oliver could't help but give a wry smile. How many times had he heard that one over the years?

"His inventions are cool, and to have that amount of money is probably very nice. But, I've never gotten behind him as a superhero, you know? I just... I'm not sure." Oliver tried to explain, but he knew that was a little lacking. "Did you see Civil War?" Oliver asked, wondering if that was too much of a push to ask such a thing, but deciding it couldn't hurt to bring up Muggle media.

He felt a tinge of guilt as the male before him jumped; it hadn't been his intention to cause anyone to be startled. The smile, though, told him all was forgiven, and he relaxed a little, returning the smile with one of his own. "I'm sorry," he said, nevertheless. "I tend to forget people aren't hearing my thoughts."

The answer to the question came before he'd even given context, and at once Cabhan knew he'd found a fellow book lover and comic reader. Why hadn't he talked to Oliver before? That was something he would probably never figure out, and something he'd regret. It was always nice to talk to a fellow nerd.

He jokingly made a face at the answer. "A man frozen in ice, awakens to find he's different and must save the world -- sounds exactly like Avatar, if you ask me!" he jested, grinning and adding a laugh to show he meant no harm. "I always found their story a bit too sad for my liking, although I won't spoil it for you if you haven't read it yet."

Cabhan laughed at the answer. "Oh, I doubt it was that bad! There's always something interesting to be taken out of even the most boring of ocassions; you just gotta know where to look and how to phrase it. How else do authors do it?"

He nodded at the explanation given. "He seems lacking in some ways. He's more of a butt than a hero, and given to selfish ambition," he agreed. "I think that's why I like him. I've always been a sucker for a good redemption plot!" He nodded at the answer given. "I saw it the day it came out, and then again before Infinity Wars; have you seen the latest one? I can't believe the ending to that -- but again, spoilers."

Oliver smiled slightly. "Well, most people aren't. I've heard there are mind readers in this world, though. Well... they're not called mind reader... what is the word..." Oliver paused, thinking for a few moments longer before the word came to him. "Legillimens. Don't worry, I'm not one." He added as an after thought, making sure the male didn't get spooked and run off or something like that.

The comment of the story being something like Avatar made Oliver shrug a little. "I guess so? But, most stories have an overlap somewhere, you know? Like if you take the Hunger Games, and compare it to Divergent. They're not really worlds apart." Oliver explained. Though, he wasn't deeply knowledgeable of both of them, he had seen the similarities when he watched.

The comment on Steggy though, made Oliver smile with a small grimace. "Oh, I know, don't worry, I'm under no illusion that this is a happy ending. Probably why I like them so much..." Oliver admitted with something of a wry smile. Whilst... something of a romantic, forbidden, or rather, love that couldn't always work out, were amongst his favourite tropes. That, though, was another conversation entirely.

Oliver let out a small chuckle at the idea of authors making stuff up, and gave a small shrug of his shoulder. "In truth, my summer is... well, kind of embarrassing. I have a younger sister, Isobella, so I spent the summer with her. And, well, she's quite the girly girl, so I am sure you can imagine the horrors I had to face. But, it was fun. She likes watching YouTube videos a lot, so we did a lot of stuff like that." He explained casually, though his lips had turned up in to something of a fond smile whilst he thought back to his sister.

"But, what about you, what did you do over the summer?" Oliver asked, deflecting the attention from himself and towards the Hufflepuff in that moment.

"Yeah, I suppose... I'm more of a pure hero kind of person? If that makes sense..." Oliver explained, wondering if that was the right way to explain himself in that moment. "Oh, Infinity Wars! they were amazing! I loved all of it - except, you know that part where they're all waiting for the bad guys. And Boom!" Oliver explained, shaking his head. "I watched it in 3D and, man I nearly jumped out of my skin!" He admitted, not ashamed of telling the truth on this point.

He was sure Toryn would understand that bit.
