| With Christmas only just around the corner, James was on the fence about the term coming to an end. Usually, he was in slightly higher spirits with the term ending, but this term, he would be heading home to witness his daughter's first Christmas experience. Truthfully, nothing could have made him happier, but this was James, and his own enjoyment of something was internalised at best.
However, the quirky potion of choice that day might have shown that James was not holding his students to the usual high reputation that was usual of the Potion's Master.
Not that his features gave much away as he sat scribbling notes of a recipe down to go through later in his own time. After creating one potion and having successfully sold it to the Ministry, James was eager to create another. The money wasn't bad - not that he needed it - but he was making quite the sizable sum for his daughter to live off of, when she turned of age.
The board, today, held the topic of the day. Volubilis Potion. |

| Elleon couldn't wait for the Christmas holidays. He'd worked his butt off this semester, sacrificing precious art time to practice his spells and charms. They were still the lowest grades he had out of all his subjects but it wasn't for a lack of trying. He had the theory down pat; it was just the actual casting of the spell or charm that was his downfall. He'd been working on his non-verbal casting but that took time to perfect.
Which left Potions as his highest grade and the class he enjoyed the most - until he saw what was written on the board when he walked into the room.
The Volubilis Potion? He knew what that was and what it did, but he wasn't a particularly oral Deafie. Sure he'd been in some situations where he had to speak up, but it wasn't his first choice and it was his last resort. If the professor asked them to consume the potion to see the effects, he probably wouldn't do it. He might lose the grade but he couldn't hear! How'd he know what he or any other people sounded like? |

| Stephanie liked potions. In the chaos that was currently her life, she enjoyed the idea of precision and control she had over potions. It was all in her hands and nothing went wrong if you did everything right - which Stephanie could most definitely do. She had always excelled in this class, perhaps due to her need for having everything done perfectly. Plus, it helped that she was in charge of everything she did. The only thing she didn't like was the professor.
Walking into the classroom, she saw that they would be doing the Volubilis Potion. That was interesting. They normally learned more serious potions and it was rare to have a fun one they could try out and experiment with, but Stephanie wasn't going to object to that. Sure, the Volubilis Potion was useful in its own right but it could also be something they could have some fun with if Professor Balan allowed them to drink it.
She took a seat, going through what she knew of the potion before class started.

| Potions had the potential to be a really great class. And Jerome, having a great interest in potions, liked to believe that he had the potential to go exceptionally well in this class. He made his way down to the dungeons, and eventually found the potions classroom.
He made his way in, and found an empty seat more towards the front of the room. Professor Balan seemed like a stern man, and so Jerome didn't take the time to talk to anyone as he might have done in other classes. No, instead he got himself ready for class. The Volubilis Potion, Jerome thought, was an odd choice, considering the mans strict reputation. If he remembered correctly, it was the potion that altered voices. Perhaps it could be useful, at one point, if per say, he needed to trick someone into thinking he was someone else (a perfectly plausible thing that would almost certainly happen). |

| Another class, another day... Dimitri was quite ready to be heading home for the Winter break and to get away from the dull affairs that were classes. Today's topic of choice was Potions, which he wasn't overly fussed by. If it were a good lesson, great, if not... well, the Ravenclaw wasn't exactly too bothered by that, either.
Stepping down in to the dungeons sent a chill up the Ravenclaw's spine, the cold was seeping in to the castle, which was never enjoyable for anyone, and was likely only going to make Professor Balan in a worse mood than normal.
Trying not to hold that against the professor too much, though, Dimitri made his way in to the class, and an empty seat. Looking to the board to find the subject of today's class. The Volubilis Potion. Well, at least it would be a little bit interesting. But, only a little bit. |

| Potions was one of Lucy's better classes, it was certainly the one she enjoyed the most (despite how stern Professor Balan came across). She was good at it, and it was just so versatile. A bonus was that it was close by, so she didn't have to walk up those gruelling staircases. She walked into the classroom, noting the potion they'd be working on that day. It was one of the more lighthearted potions, one of the easier ones if Lucy remembered correctly. She glanced around, noting only four other students had turned up for that lesson.
"Professor," she grinned, her voice light and bubbly. She quickly moved to find a seat next to Dimitri. She started to get her things ready for the lesson "Should be fun," she murmured to Dimitri, flashing him a quick smile as she took out her equipment and book, while she waited for Professor Balan to begin the class. |

| As the class filled with students, James paid little and less attention to those who joined the class. It would be however many of the lazy little children decided to get their asses out of bed and to his class and he had no intention of getting excited for any of them to arrive, harsh though that might seem, it was the truth of the situation.
Soon, though, James checked his watch, and after seeing the class should have started a few minutes ago, he cleared his throat to get the attention of the class on him. "Morning." He added, giving the slower students in his class just a moment longer to get themselves ready for the lesson in hand.
"Today, we will be looking at the Volubilis Potion -- which bookworm in the room can tell us what that potion does?" He asked, because it was all that ever came out of these questions, the bookworm in the room would provide an answer, unsatisfactory at best, and then they'd move on. |

| Clara sat at the back of the class as usual. The professor didn't seem to be in a very good mood today, though she wasn't all that great at reading emotions. For all she knew, she might just be projecting her own emotions onto him--though she thought it rather unlikely, as that was a Freudian concept, and Freud was absolutely ridiculous. Still, she at least knew that she was not particularly happy today, so she could not blame the potions master for feeling likewise.
Normally, potions class would have cheered her up. She loved potions after all, and making them was somehow very calming to her. However, she had just received a letter from her parents informing her that her mother's aunt had become very ill, very suddenly, and thus her parents had needed to book an emergency flight to America to visit her. Which, in itself, would not be extremely upsetting, except that it meant she would not be going home for winter break. So, no, she was not very happy at all, and not even potions could succeed in cheering her up today.
Volubilis Potion, as she well knew, was voice-altering potion, which also had the power to restore a lost voice and/or dispel a silencing charm. She had read about it months ago. The potion's effects didn't really interest her, but she figured it would be a fun one to make--it changed colors a total of eleven times during the brewing process. She raised a tentative hand in response to the professor's question.
"Volubilis Potion is a potion that alters the voice of the drinker, or restores their voice if lost. The combination of honeywater and mint along with stewed Mandrake gives the potion restorative properties affecting the throat, and specifically the larynx, though the addition of syrup of Hellebore makes it potentially dangerous in large quantities." |
