Potions Class 1 2022/23 [Open to all years] - Page 2 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Potions Class 1 2022/23 [Open to all years]   Potions Class 1 2022/23 [Open to all years] - Page 2 EmptySun Sep 10, 2017 5:15 pm

Not knowing the professor’s cues, Elleon kept his eyes on the man, watching as he did something at the back of the class before walking to the front and starting to speak.

The thing he didn't like about new professors was that he had to learn their lips from scratch. Every person had a different way of moving their lips and in order to read them somewhat well, he needed to know their quirks and tells. But that only came with time and enough interaction with them to get used to their ways. Though Professor Balan wasn't very nice, at least he didn't speak a lot, making Elleon’s life easier.

This professor however, went on a long spiel that left Elleon mostly with a muddled mess he had to sort through, and gaping holes he had to fill. What made it worse was that he had an accent, or so Elleon suspected, judging from the way he moved his lips. He didn't turn to his textbook because the professor kept talking, filing away the chapters and pages number in his head instead, and keeping his eyes to glued to his lips. He missed quite a lot of the words the professor had said and had to work double time to fill the blanks. It was nearly impossible, but from what he could make out, they had to identify the potion, taking it from him and giving him their name.

Quickly, he scribbled out a note:

Professor Andersson,

I’m Elleon and I’m Deaf. I would very much appreciate it if you could talk a little slower and stand or sit so that I have a clear view of your face. Thank you.

He stood up and walked to the front, passing the note to Professor Andersson with a smile and waiting for him to acknowledge before taking up his potion and returning to his seat. From what Elleon could figure out, the professor had said that the creator of the potion had a statue on the fifth floor of the castle. One, he knew was Boris the Bewildered. But he wasn't a potioneer. The other was of Gregory the Smarmy, and he was a potioneer. He’d invented a potion that made the drinker think that the giver of the potion was their best friend. The name had two U’s in it. Tapping the end of his quill against his chin, Elleon thought for a while.

Taking the parchment he’d previously prepared, Elleon dipped his quill in ink and wrote clearly:

The name of the potion is Gregory’s Unctuous Unction and it was made by Gregory the Smarmy.

He’d leave the effect of the potion for someone else to answer.

He raised his hand to call attention, then held up the parchment on which he had written for Professor Andersson to read. Elleon wasn't sure if he had been looking for a verbal answer or not, but he had answered it. He’d just have to get used to Elleon writing down his answers instead of saying it.

Clara had a guess as to what the potion was, just by looking at it. She could see a faint green smoke, which could have been several things, but when the professor mentioned "ointments," she narrowed it down to Unctuous Unction as a distinct probability. The statue clue didn't help her--she rarely paid much attention to the statues, her mind usually focused on other things. But she had studied everything in the textbook extensively, so there wasn't likely to be anything truly "unfamiliar" to her.

Just to be sure, she approached the desk, stated her name, and took a vial as instructed. Returning to her desk, she recited Scarpin's Revelaspell under her breath--she'd come across it the previous year, and immediately seeing how useful it would be, memorised and practised it in her free time. As the ingredients revealed themselves, she flipped to the page on Gregory's Unctuous Unction and ticked them all off on the list. Just as she was about to raise her hand, she noticed a Hufflepuff boy holding up a piece of paper. From her position, she could just make out what it read.

She made a mental groan of frustration, having not been the first to answer, despite knowing the answer from the beginning. She berated herself for not simply going with her hunch immediately. But she noticed the boy hadn't answered one of the questions, and raised her hand.

"Gregory's Unctuous Unction causes the drinker to believe that whoever gave them the potion is their best friend, in a way that may leave them in a daze-like state, similar to many love potions, or even the Imperius Curse."
