| The first lesson had not been quite as successful as Jake had anticipated, but he told himself that this was okay. After all, the kids were back for the first time, and they needed to get back in to the swing of things. And, with Christmas being just around the corner, Jake was sure the excitement would fuel his students with that extra energy that they needed.
Jake sat atop his desk, his customary reindeer antlers atop his head with the assortment of Christmas hats by the door for those who were interested in joining him in the festive mood. He was, of course, quite aware that he looked ridiculous as a grown man in a pair of antlers, but this was the joy of the festive season.
A note had been sent to all of the students, to come with their swimming attire on underneath their uniforms. Jake hadn't added more of an explanation, but as soon as the students arrived, they would get one with the large tank that took up almost the whole of the room. And, of course, as usual, the board gave the biggest clue.

| Mercy was beyond ready for Defense Against the Dark Arts. It was a class that excited her, and she loved the professor. She bounded down the hallway, filled with Christmas cheer--she couldn't wait for the holidays; as much as she loved Hogwarts, she was eager to see her parents again and tell them everything that had happened since school began. They'd been writing each other, of course, and texting sometimes too, but it wasn't quite the same. Her energy level, already normally quite high, had spiked even further, until she was practically bursting with joy and enthusiasm in everything she did.
Even the approaching full moon couldn't dampen her spirits too far. She was going home soon--every time she thought about it, she felt herself smiling uncontrollably, as she did now.
She marched into the classroom like this, a little ball of excitement, and practically squealed when she saw Jake in reindeer antlers, and more hats by the door. She grabbed a pair of antlers herself, with little jingle bells on them, and stuck them on her head. She shook her head back and forth enthusiastically so they would jingle.
Bouncing with every step, she approached the middle of the classroom, her eyes trained on the giant tank. What was inside? She looked up at the board and read "Grindylows," her mouth making an "oh" shape as her eyes lit up.
"Everyone used to say that the old lady on our street kept a grindylow in her pond! But I never saw it before we moved," she blurted to the professor. |

| As the classroom filled, Jake smiled to each student that arrived, though his smile grew at the entrance of one Gryffindor in particular. Little Mercy was one of the sweetest kids he'd seen in a while, and Jake had to admit the young witch had something of a soft spot already implanted in Jake. Her choice of the jingling antlers only went to show that she was, indeed, a bundle of joy to be around.
Her comment on the Grindylows made Jake laugh softly. Enthusiasm would never be dampened in his classroom, that was for sure. "Did she? Well, you'll get to see one today." Jake told the young witch, checking his watch a moment later to see that it was time to proceed with the day's lesson.
"Right, so, lets get on, if anyone comes late, they'll have to catch up." Jake told the class, motioning to the tank before them. "Today's lesson is on Grindylows. Does anybody want to tell me what these are? You might have studied them in Care of Magical Creatures... I'm truthfully not sure where they fall in to your syllabus in that lesson..." Jake explained, trailing off slightly because he honestly couldn't have been sure.OOC: I have two note:
1. I am pretending the class had more than one person -- because realistically, it wouldn't just be one person.
2. If anyone wishes to join in this lesson late, please feel free, I don't mind Class Now Closed. House Points: Mercy Williams = 10 points for attendance
