OOC: This lesson takes place in January 2024.

The first class back was with the older years and Jake had something of a different subject today. He wondered whether his students might be able to cope with this lesson, or whether he might be pushing them too hard, but Jake had faith in their abilities.

The classroom was set up today with chairs and desks, but this wasn't because they were going to be doing a theoretical lesson. This was simply because the class was, in the end, going to end up more of a one on one scenario than one that would require all of them to actively participate in the same moment.

He hoped, though, that they would enjoy it nonetheless.

Behind Jake on the board were the details of today's lesson, or, a hint at what they might be doing.

Playing Mind Games

Jake, as per usual, sat atop his desk, waiting for his students to arrive so that they could begin the lesson. Upon each desk sat a bar of Honeydukes best chocolate for his students, because Jake knew they were going to need it by the end of the lesson.

Sasha had decided to take the DADa once again. Her Christmas ended up being quite eventful once again. She had spent it in America actually. Well, most of it anyways. So now being back at school again was interesting for sure. She had no idea what will even happen next in her life.

Anyways walking into the classroom she was surprised to see the desk and chairs now in order. She just shrugged on that. "Hello, Jake," she said with a small smile on her face and took a seat there. She glanced over the board. She didn't really know much about mind control or so.

She figured this lesson might be also an interesting one. She did actually like the lesson last year. At least she learned then something interesting even if she isn't sure when she might need it. But it could at times come handy but she wasn't sure about this one. Anyways she will see how this lesson goes.

New Year, new outlook on life. At least this was Tess' motto for the new year. Now at seventeen she found herself being more open to the idea of new things, and even allowed herself to try and be happy more often. One of the happy things that came into her life was that her schedule finally aligned and she got her preferred class time for DADA.  If she was perfectly honest she had missed Professor Newbury; it was nice to have someone that actually enjoyed what they taught.

As she entered the classroom she frowned for neither Elenore nor Cordelia were there. Nonetheless, she smiled at the Hufflepuff she didn't quite know, before properly greeting the Professor.

"Good Afternoon Jake" she said softly. Her eyes did trail towards the candy bar on his desks with curiosity.

This was not a good sign; at least she had learned in her previous lessons that if sugar was needed it would be mentally and physically exhausting. It was once she took in the subject for the day, she sat down patiently just wondering how hard she would have to exert herself.

Walking through the corridor, half-wishing she was still back in Rome and Capri, with Matteo beside her in bed, Delia made her way to class. The Christmas break had been a remarkable three weeks off, with things going far better than she could've ever imagined. Matteo had been a wonderful host -- even if Tess had found some of his playful advances a slight shocker -- and his boat had been a magnificent surprise.

And then there'd been Jesse and Tess' whole... well, encounter was not a strong enough word for it. Returning to Britain after the beaches and sights and everything had been rather dampening, to say the least. But still, if every moment was special, would any moment be special? She didn't think so; she was, in that sense, glad for drab ordinary. They made the wonderful experiences truly something amazing.

Having agreed to meet with Tess in the classroom, Delia entered, surprise lining her features at the seats in the room. "Jake," she greeted, remembering from previous lessons that he didn't like 'Professor'. She still wasn't entirely sure on whether she liked him or not, but he'd never know that from her smile and attitude.

Then, seeing the witch she'd spent the last three weeks already there, she moved to her side. "Heyyy," she greeted, sliding her arm into hers and directing her to the front row. Taking her own seat, she smiled at Tess as she sat. "Still glad to be back in school or missing Rome now that classes have started?" she asked, placing only a slight emphasis on the place they'd meant to be in the entire summer.

Glancing to the board, she took in the words and the chocolate on the table and her eyebrows shot up. Something was up, that was for sure. Mind games, though, were definitely fun. "Mind games?" she repeated, not bothering to lower her voice; it was obvious from her tone that she was teasing the witch, and that it was an inside joke. She wasn't genuine about her statement. "Like sending someone a lemon, I guess?" She shot a smirk towards Tess, and then added, "Have you eaten it already, by the way? That special, special sweet lemon?"

With Christmas break finally over, Alexei having spent it at school as he didn't want to stay in the house all by himself while his brother was out on some Potion Masters convention in Rome of all places, the seventh year Slytherin was ready to go back to class and enjoy the bustle and hustle of daily life at school while he had the chance.

The male took no time in getting the hell out of the common room so that he could head to DADA; he spent enough time in that little room for the past three weeks and he had no plans of spending any more time than strictly necessary. The door to the class was open, like usual, so the seventh year slipped inside, smiling politely at Jake with a murmured "Good morning Jake." as he curiously looked around at the desks that were there before his eyes zoomed in on the subject on the board and then the candy bar on Jake's desk.

Mind games?

Whatever they were going to do in this lesson would either be a headache or it would be informative. He hoped for the latter as he took a seat.

The Christmas break had been eventful for Elleon. He'd finished the mural the town council had hired him to do and had received a hefty paycheck for it. Now everyone passing by that famous landmark would see his work, but nobody would know that it was his unless that looked very closely and managed to spy his signature hidden in the artwork. Then again, he doubted anybody would it able to do that. He'd made it almost like an optical illusion so that if he didn't tell them that it was his signature, no one would have a clue. Of course, he could've gone the normal route and signed it off visibly, but where was the fun in that?

Now back at school, Elleon was ready for classes. He entered the DADA classroom and saw the group of students already there. To his surprise, there were desks and chairs present, something that was not usually found in Jake's classes. Would they be doing theoretical work today? Or something else entirely? Whatever it was, it apparently had something to do with the mind. That was going to be interesting.

Waving at the professor and shooting a smile at Delia, Elleon took a seat near the front to the side where he had a good angle of Jake if he spoke as well as the rest of the class behind him if students answered questions.

As each of his students entered the room, Jake replied to each greeting he was given with a small smile. There was nothing much else to bring out of each comment, so Jake simply waited for his class to fill up until the clock announced the hour, and he was expected to start the lesson. There was a small bit of conversation going on between the girls, but Jake hadn't understood, so he let it go.

As the hour came in to being, Jake cleared his throat.

"Right, good afternoon, everyone. I hope you're all doing well, and I'm sorry for the confusion with the desks." Jake said, a smile playing on his lips because he knew it would probably have been quite off putting for those who liked to keep to a routine. Especially when Jake's routine had always been without desks.

"Today, we will be looking at Mind Games. Now, I know this will have your mind racing -- that was the point -- to try and work out what we're going to be doing today. Great!" Jake said, with a light in his eye that showed he was enjoying himself. "So, Mind Games, the first question I pose to you all is, what do you think of when I say Mind Games? Do you have stereotypes popping up in your head? Is it something you do to yourself, or to others, can it be both?

"Can you combat them?" Jake asked, looking around the classroom to see if anyone had clued on to the topic they would be moving on towards in this lesson. "After all, we're in a Defence class..." The professor finished with a small laugh.

"Like sending someone a lemon, I guess?" She shot a smirk towards Tess, and then added, "Have you eaten it already, by the way? That special, special sweet lemon?"

It was amazing how quickly her mood went from happy to see Delia to annoyed at the teasing. Her cheeks reddened considerably at her joke but before she could properly give her a response, Jake began the lesson. Immediately, it was clear that this would be open to interpretation, at least attempting to figure out the proper lesson plan. Being glad to be back, she raised her hand immediately.

"When I think of mind games, I think of manipulation. Whether it be social niceties, to more malicious intent. I know that often times they can be the most dangerous of situations, not for the hexes that can come your way, but the actions that can be taken. Whether or not we can defend ourselves..well it depends on the individual and if they can consider the situation as a safe one. But if we are to talk about more..magical objections, I would think literally protecting your mind from people attempting to insert themselves such as legilimens"

It was not her desired trail of thought for it was not something that she had properly planned out. But in her world. mind games made her social circles go round.

Sasha listened what was going on now there. She really wasn't at first sure what to say about the today's topic really. She didn't really know much about mind games for sure. She has never even tried something like that before. So she hoped that someone else would go there but since barely anyone spoke up today then she decided to give it try.

"I could say in my mind comes Occlumency and Legilmency. Mostly because Legilmency is mind-reading, you basically go through people mind by layers of the memories. Occlumency is a magical act where you close your mind against Legilmency," she said there now something. She had no idea how right or wrong her answer had been.

She at least tried to answer there now. "Not sure how right or wrong I am. But this was only thing what came to my mind," she added there now even just in the case. She had no idea what professor expect them to say there now.

When Tess spoke up, Jake turned his attention towards the witch, smiling warmly at her answer, and nodding along. "Very good, Tess, very good. You're quite right with each of those statements, take five points for Slytherin!" Jake told her with a small thumbs up to show she had done well with her answer.

Then Sasha spoke up on the art of Legillimency and Occlumency and Jake couldn't help but be impressed. This magic wasn't unheard of, of course, but it was quite a specialist branch, not something that was ordinarily used in the Magical world, but something a number of people learned for varying reasons. "Right you are, Sasha! Well done! Take five points for Hufflepuff, too!

"As both Tess and Sasha have pointed out, there is a wide range to 'mind games' there is not one answer, and for each branch of mind games you need to have a different form of defence. Many people fall foul to mind games, due to being too trusting, not being aware they're being dragged in to such games, or simply because they can't defend themselves." Jake explained, making sure this came across as an important subject, because it most certainly was.

"Today, however, we will be looking in to the art of Occlumency, though. The art of closing your mind to someone trying to use Legillimens to see in to your mind. To see anything you're trying to hide within. How, you will ask, do we do this?" Jake posed the rhetorical question, before continuing. "You need to make your mind blank, an empty canvas, devoid of feelings, thoughts, emotions. Then, if someone gets in to your mind, they will not know the things you're trying to hide.

"Of course, if it were that easy, everyone could do it. This is a very difficult branch of magic, many of you may only be able to do this piece of magic for mere moments, but that in itself is a very good place to start.

"Today, we will be taking it in turns to give this a go, you will step forth to attempt the magic, and I will in turn use Legillimency to try to get in to your mind. See how long you can keep me out, that is the goal. You may try more than once, the chocolate on your desks is for after you've given the spell a go, because this will be horribly exhausting for all." Jake explained, before looking around the class. "Who would like to go first?"

OOC: You are welcome to GM Jake attempting to use Legillimens on your character. Jake will only use Legillimens on the student until a feeling/memory comes in to view clearly, and then he will break off before he intrudes too far.

Please remember this spell is difficult, and try to write as realistically as possible in this scenario.

Any questions, please ask Smile
