Kit and Clara never argued. They disagreed on plenty of things but an outright argument... was something Kit always avoided like the plague. Actually, Clara reflected as she sat in the spacious living area of Harrington House in Carmel, her best friend would embrace the plague first before engaging in an argument. But Clara also knew he hadn't always been like that. There was a time when all he did was argue, and it had cost him the most important thing he would ever have.

As a result, Kit either resorted to violence or walking away but never arguments. Another woman would have used it to her advantage, trying to draw him into situations he was uncomfortable with just to get the edge. Clara wasn't like those women though and as a result, a lot of the disagreement between the two companions was dealt with quietly, behind closed doors r not at all. Over time, the psychic could be found waving feathered brooms and fans around the house to dispel all the things they hadn't said to each other because it created bad energy.

When Azalea had shown up not two weeks ago at their home, looking like a ghost of herself and - upon further examination - with child, Clara had called Kit first thing. The man had abandoned whatever or whoever he was dong in Paris to return home and since then, their beach home had become a constant guesthouse to doctors, healers, medical experts, police officers, Aurars and other figures of authority who could help figure out what had happened to Azzie. The young woman herself was clearly not capable of such things.

It had taken the doctors only days to versify the file Azalea had arrived with accurate. Her conditions were recorded meticulously and her blood reports matched the medication they stated she was on. The condition of the baby too was perfect. But that was where the positive news ended. The Aurar's examination revealed that the witch had been wiped off all traces of magic, and her memories were vacant. Due to her delicate cognitive situation, more intrusive memory charm could not be performed. Her body had similarly been wiped clean, not giving away where or how she had been kept except in a similarly immaculate condition.

It didn't matter though, of course it didn't matter where she had been. What did was that she was back. Their baby was back and even if she only spoke a few words and spent mos of her days curled up in Mimosa's room, she was still the little girl they had raised with all the love in the world and then some more. She had barely recognized them, letting out a soft "dad" upon seeing Kit before breaking own into his arms and crying herself into an exhausted stupor.

An she couldn't sleep. The file had made extensive notes on the sleeping potions she was allowed that wouldn't harm the growing child inside her and as much as Clara didn't want to succumb to them, after day four she had given up. No matter how tired her little Azzie was, no matter how exhausted, she could not sleep unaided.

On the fifth day after a dose of that specialized potion, the young witch finally slept, once again curled up in Mimosa's bed, her chocolate eyes now closed to the world that had been so cruel to her. It was as they had stood at the door watching her sleep that Clara had first mentioned it.

"We have to tell-"

"No!"

"He has the right-"

"No!"

"Kit, we didn't know during Mimosa's time. This time, we'd intentionally be keeping things from Jake."

"Well maybe he deserves it. What good has he ever been to our girls?"

Clara shook her head. The battle wouldn't be won tonight but at least an idea had been put forth. They could discuss it slowly over the coming days and then, hopefully Kit would come around.

He hadn't, not until Clara had pointed out that it might benefit Azalea to see her daughter's father again. There was no doubt their daughter was in a bad way. She barely ate, slept only with the help of the potion and spent most of the day slowly gong through Mimosa's things. It had taken all the willpower both of them had not to call Mimosa back as soon as it became obvious what Azalea wanted. Had Mimosa not been a person with her own perceptions and impacts, she would have been here right now. As it was, Clara simply stayed with her Azzie during the days, showing her Mimosa's things and telling her stories behind each and every object. Sometimes Azalea listened, very rarely did she ask a question, but mostly she simply held the things close and looked sad.

For no one but his daughter would Kit have agreed to what Clara did next. The psychic drafted a letter - shuddering as she did so at visions of a woman plunging herself into water - requesting Jake's presence in Carmel. She tried to keep the tone light while insisting it was important he came. She also made sure to mention that Mimosa was fine and having the time of her life in Delhi. Jake hadn't replied but he didn't have to. Clara knew exactly when he would be coming thanks to her unique gifts and so, now she sat in the living area, more formally than she ever had before, waiting for her guest.

To drop the bomb on him.

These wounds won't seem to heal (Jake) Empty
PostSubject: Re: These wounds won't seem to heal (Jake)   These wounds won't seem to heal (Jake) EmptySat Apr 28, 2018 8:13 pm

Life with the news of his eldest daughter had been weird for Jake. He wanted to embrace the young witch to him each time he saw her, telling her the truth of the matter, and let her know that no matter what, he was there for her. He wanted, with all his heart, to bring Mimosa to her home, with him, to meet her brother and sister, to have his little family together so that he knew they were all safe -- not that he believed Mimosa to be unsafe, but she was his daughter, she should have been with him.

But, what Jake wanted was a stark difference to the reality of the world.

He could not yet tell Mimosa who he was, merely offering to help her with her Quidditch practice so that she could make the first team next year -- even if he knew that she shouldn't be playing in her condition, her enthusiasm shouldn't be quelled. Jake hadn't told Ivan or Adrienne, either, deciding it was best to only tell them when he knew whether Mimosa wanted him in her life. It was difficult, trying to keep the children separate when he thought of the three as his, with no difference.

The rest of his family were being supportive about it all -- the initial shock from his mom had left them sat in the kitchen of his home deep in to the night as he went through Mimosa's files with her, explaining her medical conditions which had brought his mom to tears as she held his hand. The details of Azalea's death he kept to a minimum, not hiding the truth, but not bringing forth all the details that had made his skin crawl when Clara had told him. His mom had gone over the decision with him about telling Ivan and Adrienne, and Alexis Newbury had agreed, until the situation became clearer, the children did not need the confusion.

His dad had left it at a soft grunt of disgust at what the Harrington's had kept from him all these years, and Jake had left it at that, knowing that the support would be there whenever he needed it. Victoria had picked up on his father's lack of comment, her excitement clear of being an Auntie for a third time in her features -- and, it seemed she already knew Mimosa, and loved the child (where was the surprise).

After school had let out, Jake had been occupied with the children, his job, and the indecisiveness of getting Mimosa something for her birthday. As a father, he felt the need to show Mimosa he was thinking of her on her birthday, but as his mom had pointed out, he couldn't bring the girl gifts yet, it was too soon, and his position as her professor would be brought in to question. So, Jake had returned his focus to his two other children over the holidays in and around his work, knowing Mimosa was busy in India with her work she would not think of her Defence Professor until the new year.

He'd been in the process the preparations for Ivan's seventh birthday party when the letter had arrived from the States. Jake's back was up almost instantly in that moment as he tore open the letter, dread filling him in mass waves. It wasn't official, so it was not a law suit denying him access to his daughter for some unknown reason. The feminine writing belonged, Jake found only moments later, to Clara, which made him frantically search for Mimosa's name.

She was fine.

The Auror relaxed in that moment, knowing his mom's eyes were on him in that moment as he read through the letter.

"Jake..?"

"The Harringtons want me to go to Carmel." Jake replied, reading over the line that held Mimosa's name twice more. Mimosa is fine, he assured himself, quite sure that Clara would not lie about such things. "Mimosa is well." He added belatedly, watching his mom sag with relief in the same manner he had.

"For?"

"Doesn't say..."

"When?"

"Doesn't say..." Jake replied in the same manner, frowning at the letter.

"You're off the day after tomorrow. The children can stay with me tomorrow night, and you can go straight from work." Alexis insisted, seeing that the lack of information was bothering her son deeply in that moment.

"I can't burden you at such short notice, mom."

"Nonsense, they're never a burden." Alexis insisted, moving to give Jake a hug to reassure him. "Everything's fine, Mimosa is fine. It's probably something about her birthday, or... the next school year." She soothed him, running her fingers softly through her son's hair where he sat, still reading the letter.

The older woman gently prized it from his fingers, and pulled the party plans back towards him, realigning his attention to his son's party. Talking of children that they were inviting, checking the weather for the party -- Ivan had fallen in love with the pool recently, so he'd insisted all his friends should come to play, too. Which was fine with Jake, so long as the British summer held out. It wasn't the best distraction in the world, but Alexis Newbury posed all the right questions throughout the rest of the evening, leaving when her husband came back downstairs to announce he'd finally gotten Adrienne to sleep.

The two had left via the Floo network, Alexis pausing before she stepped through the fireplace after her husband to look back at Jake. "I promise, everything will be okay, Jake. Don't stress over it."

Jake promised not to worry, and watched her disappear from view.

He'd resigned to his room shortly after, showering and getting in to bed. Sleep came fitfully, his mind trying to work out what Clara Kent might want. To images of his eldest daughter in distress. Everything flashed quickly during the night, the dull ceiling becoming his friend as he watched it all night.

The next morning, Jake had sorted the children out for their play date with Grandma. As always, they both wanted to take too much, and Adrienne had had a tantrum when she'd been asked to choose between taking her train set, or taking her action figures. Suffice to say she was still bawling her eyes out when Jake arrived to his mom's and only the promise that Adrienne could pick the colour of the icing (deep blue) for the cakes they were all making today had made her quieten down. How is mom worked such magic, Jake would never know, but he'd given her a grateful smile as she set Adrienne down who happily took her action figures in to the next room to play with, following by Ivan who kept an eye on his sister at all times.

"Let me know what it is as soon as you can, darling." Alexis had insisted as Jake thanked her once more for looking after the children. Another promise, another thank you, and Jake moved off to work, wondering what he would have in store that day.

It seemed, however, that the criminal minds of Great Britain were not at work that day, so Jake had -- disappointingly -- been stuck in the office, filing paperwork that had been put on hold for some weeks. The day dragged as he tried to place the point Clara would have, and the moment five o'clock came, Jake moved straight to the international portkey without getting change from his uniform.

He landed at the American Ministry only a few moments later, and apparated down to Carmel by the Sea after registering his appearance in the country. The heat prickled his skin lightly from the sudden change as Jake knocked on the door. Irritably, Jake ran his fingers through his hair, waiting for Clara to answer.

Hoping, beyond anything, that his mom was right.

As the door opened, revealing Clara, Jake gave a small, tight smile. It would be easy to see he'd been worrying over the letter. "Clara," He greeted softly, not stopping himself from asking the question he needed to know the answer to. To hear the answer to. "Mimosa is okay, right? I know your letter said she was..." but please, I just need to hear you say it. The last was unspoken, but Jake knew the woman before her would understand.

Just because Clara had been the first to broach the topic of involving Jake in whatever was happening didn't mean she had a better idea of how to do the actual involving. Still, she assured herself that no matter how the meting went, she would do a better job than Kit who had simply retreated to Mimosa's room where Azalea currently sat curled on the child's bed, holding on to Bear as if her life depended on it.

Clara knew her guest was nearby when the visions started again. the same girl, standing over still waters but from high up, they might as well have been sheets of marble. This time, the girl paused, a note, Jake Newbury limbs entangled with the girls, then the jump...

The bell rang just as the vision ended, giving the psychic only moments to collect herself before she answered. As expected, his primary concern was his oldest child. "Mimosa is okay, right? I know your letter said she was..." he spoke at the same time as Clara did. "Mimosa's fine, she's in Delhi and I spoke to her this morning, she was telling me about riding elephants in a parade."

Having assured him that his eldest was perfectly alright, the witch opened the door fully, allowing him entry into the house. Perhaps one day, he would visit them without a dire cause but that day would have to wait. "Uh, would you like something to eat? Mimosa sent us some sweets from her travels, they're pretty good,' she offered, unsure how to even begin to explain to him that Azalea sat in the room upstairs.

"How's everything been going? Are the kiddos doing okay?" She wondered if she should ask him about the girl but decided not so. He had a right to a life, a private one at that.

As they both spoke, it was clear in Jake's shoulders that he was relaxing at this information. His features softened slowly, knowing Mimosa was well -- and enjoying something quite out there -- was enough to put him at ease. His three children were all well, he could not ask for anything more in life. Though, even if the information was relaxing, it still left him with the notion that he was at a disadvantage because he did not, in the slightest, know what was going on here.

Stepping through the door as Clara opened it, Jake wiped his feet on the mat, before standing awkwardly just inside, waiting for Clara to show him through to whatever room she saw fit to usher him in to today. He followed as she started talking about food, and he realised that food would, in this moment, be quite welcome. "If its... not too much trouble, some food would be lovely. I came straight from work today." He explained. It might be almost six in the evening back in the UK, but it wasn't quite midday here in Carmel by the Sea.

"Things are going... okay. We're a little bit disjointed at the moment. Some political crap going on. I try not to get too involved." Jake admitted, brushing it off. "The kids are great. Ivan's seventh birthday is coming up at the end of the month, so I've been planning his party. Pool party this year, so I'm going to have to invest in a large amount of rubber rings and armbands to ensure I don't lose any of them." It was a half hearted joke, trying to settle himself. "And Adrienne, well, she had a tantrum this morning over her toys, but, she's as beautiful as always."

The pride showed in Jake's words, he loved his children very much, and nothing would ever change that.

"And you? How are things in the Harrington household?" Jake asked. It was not the question he wanted to ask, of course, but jumping straight in with 'why am I here' was beyond rude. So, he would take his time with getting to that one. "And, how's Mr Harrington? Is he here?"

When the young Aurar agreed to some food, Clara breathed a secret sigh of relief. This she could do, at least. Motioning for him to follow her in the kitchen, she gestured to the bar stools placed in a row by the counter that also served as a table on most days. Leaving him to talk proudly about his children, she made ehr way tot eh bridge, removing the large colorful box of sweets that had arrived via Indian Eagles that morning.

Deciding to also give him some actual food, Clara removed the bag of Mexican food they had ordered last night from the fridge but no one had the heart to eat. Extracting two large burritos, she popped them on a late before putting them in the microwave. "Good good," she nodded along, only half listening to him as she poured out a glass of orange juice form a box.

"Things here have been," she began, walking over and putting the box of sweets and glass of juice in front of him. "Well, it's complicated," she tried. "We had a really unexpected visitor a few weeks ago and she isn't well. She... needs a lot of medical and personal help. So we've been busy with that."

Just then, the microwave dinged, denoting the burritos warm. Walking over to the oven, Clara removed them from the tray and brought them back to Jake. The kid might as well receive bad news on a full stomach.

Jake followed Clara through to the kitchen, taking up the bar stool as she had indicated and watching her work around the place to get him food. Jake used the time to fill Clara in on his life, briefly, before she presented him with the sweets and drink. Jake took a look at the sweets -- odd looking things -- and gingerly picked a small one out and put it in his mouth to try it.

It looked like a dough ball on some kind, Jake couldn't be sure, but it tasted of almonds. He wasn't sure on the texture, truthfully, but he swallowed it in that moment, before taking a drink of the juice Clara had provided. Deciding against another, Jake waited for the food Clara was preparing for him instead.

"I'm... sorry to hear about that..." Jake replied when Clara explained someone was ill. He took Clara to mean a friend of hers, or Kit's, and thought very little else on it. Sad though the news might be, the woman was not going to require his presence.

The burritos came a moment later, though, and Jake could not have been happier. "Thank you, so much!" He said as the plate was laid before him. The Auror wasted no time in hearing stuck in, using his fingers to lift the burrito from the plate and taking a large mouthful. He continued on for three or four bites, savouring the taste of the food for a few moments before his attention moved back to Clara once more.

"Did you need me to do something for Mimosa? Or.. do I need to help with something here? Or..." He trailed off, not knowing what Kit and Clara could possibly need of him if his daughter was okay. "If it's about Mimosa's Birthday, I think it best I don't send her anything this year, unless we're planning to inform her before then..."

It showed the Auror didn't understand why he was here, but his attention turned to the first burrito, eating it whilst he waited for Clara to finally get to the point of his being here.

His confusion was clear as he tucked into his food, and Clara let him go on with the questions. Every moment he didn't know about Azalea was another mouthful of burrito inside him. So instead of answering directly, Clara continued on her earlier explanation while he ate.

"You see, our new arrival... She seem to just wonder in," Clara explained, trying her best not to alarm him while giving him the right details. "Of course we reached out the relevant authorities but they can't find anything. Where she's been, how she got here. No one's even seen a suspicious vehicle here these past two weeks and she's... not in a state to apperate - she never liked that anyway."

As talk turned to Mimosa's birthday, the psychic merely shook her head. "I think the palace is taking care of that this year," she confirmed, putting his fears to rest. "Mimosa will be heading to Versailles for the last week of Summer unless her plans change - and they very well might." Someone would have to be at Furz Croft to greet the child because she couldn't come here, not with her mother in the state she was in.

"The thing is, Kit and I would have to divide our time between Mimosa and... this person. Since we aren't sure if its a good idea to keep Mimosa here while our... visitor is around." Giving Jake time to chew on the idea and his food, Clara waited before she spoke again.

"We'd also like you to see her... But it might trouble you a little so just... prepare yourself. Maybe you could come up and see her after you're done eating?" Yes, it was the cowards way out but it was the surest way to make him believe what was happening. If he saw her with his own eyes... Maybe if she saw him...

These wounds won't seem to heal (Jake) Empty
PostSubject: Re: These wounds won't seem to heal (Jake)   These wounds won't seem to heal (Jake) EmptySun Apr 29, 2018 10:11 am

Jake listened as Clara explained about the arrival of their guest, the lightest of frowns touching his features. So, whoever the person upstairs was, Jake surmised, they had been missing for a while. The authorities had been contacted, but they hadn't found anything suspicious recently. Idly Jake wondered if Clara though him being an Auror made him a detective, which, if she did, he'd have to put right, because they were not the same thing at all.

The link between the guest and Jake was not becoming clear, and Jake found it an odd story. Not knowing why Clara was telling him, but not knowing of anyone who had been missing that was related to the Harringtons... it was difficult for the younger male to be of any use.

The assurance once more that this was not about his eldest daughter made Jake nod, taking in the plans that had been laid out. She would be at the Palace of Versailles in the summer, with the family Jake had never met, and currently didn't need to meet. With time, perhaps, he would reach out, but whoever the relations were in France, they were not of any interest to Jake. Not, at least, until he was open and honest with Mimosa about his relations with her.

Clara continued as Jake chewed through the burrito, almost halfway through the second one when Clara admitted she didn't think it would be wise for Mimosa and the guest to be together. A frown touched Jake's features at that as he chewed his burrito, hurriedly swallowing the mouthful. "Is the guest dangerous? I can offer my services... if Mimosa can't stay here, if we need to keep her away we can think of an explanation." Jake offered without second thought. The idea of Mimosa's safety being compromised ensuring that Jake would not fall short as a father in this moment.

It was as Jake took another mouthful that Clara explained that she would like him to meet the guest. The frown on Jake's features now was nothing compared to the one just a moment ago, and it only grew deeper as she explained that the encounter might be troubling for him. "Why?" Jake asked around his mouthful, the final quarter of his burrito being put down on the plate as he swallowed. Curiosity beat hunger in that moment, and the young man sucked the grease from his fingers, signalling he was done with the food before him. "Who... is here?" He asked carefully. For the life of him, Jake could not think of a person who would be here with the Harringtons that he would need to see. Their only connection now was his daughter, and she was halfway across the world modelling.

"Who's here, Clara?" Jake asked, getting to his feet in that moment and waiting for the explanation and for Clara to show him the way. The food had been a distraction for a time, but Jake was not going to be distracted further.

As Jake left his seat, his second burrito still unfinished, Clara almost made him sit back down and clean his late before realizing she couldn't really do that. The maternal instinct might be strong but it would be misplaced with him, especially now. So instead she simply held up her hands at his growing anxiety, making the universal gesture of bracing oneself.

"Like I said, the kiddo isn't exactly in the best of conditions. She's..." What could Clara say? Pregnant? Nearly helpless? Unable to sleep. "Well, its best you see for yourself," she finally concluded, giving up on telling him as she made her way out of the kitchen, Jake following her closely.  A she made her way up the stairs, leading him to Mimosa's room, Clara kept up a steady, reassuring stream of conversation for his benefit.

"Now, its normal to feel shock when you see... her," she explained as they climbed up the winding metal stairs that would surely give the psychic arthritis one day bu proved no burden right now. "And she can't answer any questions. She can barely go eyes or no most times and in teh two weeks since she's been back, we've only gotten a few sentences out of her." So please don't try to get he to communicate or even recognize you, the thought was left unfinished. Azzie had remembered her and Kit, and certainly knew Mimosa but there was no telling how the witch would react to seeing Jake.

As they reached Mimosa's bedroom, Clara steadied herself. "Hang on a moment, let me check if everything's okay," she cautioned, asking Jake to step aside as she peeked through the door. Azalea was still on the bed, still holding on to Bear. Kit sat by her side, trying to engage her in some form o conversation, telling her he had still kept Cacti if she wanted it.

"lAright, you can go in," she confirmed, holding the door open and readying herself for the uproar she was about to introduce to the poor man's life.

These wounds won't seem to heal (Jake) Empty

Jake's confusion was only growing the more Clara spoke of the woman upstairs. He did not understand. He could not place a female between the two of them outside of the obvious, and Clara's obvious lack of wanting to tell him who she was referring to only built tension in his body.

Mimosa is safe, in India. Jake reassured himself once more.

Adrienne is safe. Victoria is safe. Your mom is safe. Lucy is safe. He told himself as he followed the chattering psychic up the stairs. He wasn't really listening anymore as he tried to whittle his way through connections they had. People who might be here. But he simply couldn't place the person. Shortly, though, Jake knew he was going to know, but he didn't wish to be off guard when it happened. Or appear rude.

Clara remained unmoving in that though.

As she asked him to wait, Jake stood back from the door, watching her curiously as she opened the door. He couldn't see inside, his eyes just remained on the woman who was acting much too mysteriously in that moment.

"Aright, you can go in,"

Jake paused, not moving forth to start with as he looked curiously to Clara. There was hesitation because he didn't know what he was going to see. Who he was going to see. But Jake knew that there was nothing that could harm him in the room. He trusted Clara not to put him in such a position, because the witch had proved in the months he'd found out about Mimosa that she was on his side with all of this.

The Auror stepped forth after a moment, sliding in to the room past Clara, his eyes taking in what was, quite obviously, his eldest daughter's room. That did not help his curiosity in that moment, his eyes found Kit beside the bed and then...

Coldness swept through the Auror's body, every single hair on his body stood on end in that moment as his stomach knotted painfully. His features lost colour instantly, as if he had seen a ghost. No, not as if, he was seeing a ghost. A ghost that held a teddy that was not hers, a ghost that was too clear, too colourful, too real to be a ghost.

No, the woman sat before him was not a ghost.

But she...

He'd been told...

Jake's eyes did not leave the witch sat on the bed, trying so very hard to comprehend this picture before him. This was not possible. Clara had told him months ago how the woman had died in the house in which- Jake didn't finish the thought, guilt would start anew if he thought of that.

Still the man did not move, save for his hand that moved only a fraction to pinch the skin at the top of his leg.

Pain.

Reality.

The woman before him was real.

And yet... what did... Jake's eyes left Azalea for a moment, looking to Kit Harrington beside her. Helplessness showed on Jake's features. What was he supposed to do? Kit Harrington was too focused on Azalea, though, so Jake's head turned to Clara, the silent look of 'what do I do?' upon his features. Clara just motioned him forward, a nod of encouragement added just a moment later when Jake didn't do so.

His eyes turned back to Azalea, and very slowly, numbly, Jake moved halfway across the room. Jake's eyes remained upon her face, trying to understand how she was here. How was she here, she was supposed to be- but, why was he clinging to what was supposed to be? Why was he not happy she was here?

That answer was easier, the woman before him looked terrified. She didn't look... right. The way she clung to the teddy in her arms... Scared him. What if she blamed him for this? He'd... He shook himself, trying to collect his thoughts, trying to work out what to do.

"Azalea..?" Jake managed after an eternity of silence in the room, crouching down in the middle of the room so that their eyes were on the same level. His voice had shaken with each syllable, clearly distressed at the sight of the witch before him.

After all these years...

Azalea sat before him.

After all these years...
