Adelaide wasn't surprised when both the young Ms. Clement and the young Ms. Goldstein stuck to current events in the wizarding world. the former at least had a vested interest as her parents were part of the abolishing brigade. The Ravenclaw however must be just naturally curious to know this much about America. Or must have one of the many american students trawling through the hallowed halls of Hogwarts as friends.
Ms. Bliss however took the class in another direction, trying no doubt to play on he concept of Global citizenship, and because no one had done that in the classes before, the redhead was willing to give credit where it was due. However, corrections were in order.
"Very good Ms. Clement, Ms. Goldstein, take five points apiece. The situation in the Americas has always been complicated, and while the media would have you believe this is the worst its ever been, that's not true. There has been more bloodshed and strife in the mere three hundred years than there could have been anywhere in Europe in Comparison localized to a singular country." The Americans in the room might understand it, or they might not. The Headmistress simply hoped this would spark an interest into researching the topic thoroughly.
"Ms. Bliss has introduced a rather interesting premise, that being a Global Citizen refers to being kind and helpful. And while she does get her five points, there is a lot more to the concept than kindness I'm afraid." Because the students needed to know reality before they left her class. If all the news stories provided to them didn't open their eyes, maybe this clear cut explanation would.
"Being a Global Citizen refers first and foremost to our connectivity across the globe. There used to be tiems when two people could exist thousands of miles away from each other and die without ever being the wiser of each other. Now, they can talk every day, buy and sell, make decisions together and travel to meet in only a number of days at most." Technology had made absurdly easy to keep track of someone thousands of miles away, annoyingly so, thought the redhead as she tried to push a facebook post of her daughter's engagement out of her mind. Autumn was a grown woman allowed to make her childish choices.
"This unfortunately also means that we are no longer unaffected by the security of the vacuum we once existed in. America is still thousands of miles away yet their decisions affect us. the ICWW is not a geographically bound entity yet it effects us no matter where the council sits to decide the fate of our world. A Global Citizen is one who knows this, and acts accordingly, whether it be with kindness or cruelty."
The witch paused, taking time to look upon the faces of all her students. Would she see many next term? Next year? Would they see her?
"For the remainder of our class, I would like you to go through all the newspapers, magazines and journals provided to you. Pick one that you would like to further delve into for your homework." With a flick of her wand, the homework appeared on the blackboard for all to see.
And the next hour was spend quietly, with nothing bu the scritch scratch of quills on paper and the crisp turning and unfolding of pages. Just the kind of environment Adelaide liked.
