| Harper sat curled up in an arm chair, journal cradled in her arms. Words flew from her pencil, her hands moving with her train of thought.
Dear Diary...
Today is just another day. Another day, another worry, another thousand things to get done. At least the school year is almost over, the summer is quickly approaching, and I'm thankful I no longer have to worry about those dreadful exams. I think I did fine on those. I haven't yet got the results back, but I'm semi-confident I got an okay score. I don't think I flunked or anything. Though, you can never tell I suppose until you get your results. Now that's a scary thought. Just one more thing to worry about, failing.
Let's see, what's new in my life? Well, I've made new drawings, new jewelry, new poems, though that's not really new news. Those are always coming, spilling from my brain and filling pages, or bending wires. I met a girl, but I don't know that that's really going to go anywhere. I got my medicine refilled, but, again, that's the same stuff as always. Basically, I suppose I'm saying my life's gotten boring.
In some ways, I'm looking forward to the summer! No schoolwork to do, no people to worry about impressing, no expectations. In others, I'm dreading it. Mostly because it means I have to pack up my life in London and drag it to Paris. It has it's perks. I get to explore, and my dad works so much I get a lot of freedom, but it's incredibly lonely. There's nothing I would want more than to spend some quality time with my Dad, but I doubt that'll happen, even with me living with him all summer. Oh well, nothing to do I suppose but make the best of it.
Harper bit the inside of her cheek. She wasn't sure exactly what else to write, and didn't want to move on to the last bits of homework she had, neither was she in the mood to do her usual hobbies. She felt like journaling, but she had run out of words, so she decided to doodle at the top of the page, and on the sides, and the space that wasn't taken up by words. Flower and wisps of vine, and leaves filled the free spaces on the paper as she drew. |

| The application for Julliard School had been dispatched from Hogsmeade's Post Office weeks ago by the youngest Clement. The lady behind the counter had asked Elenore if it would be going to the Palace, knowing that this was Elenore's usual correspondence address, but Elenore had shook her head, denoting that this one would, instead, be going to America. Elenore had checked for a second time that the return address being at Hogsmeade would be okay, and that she would be notified of the receipt of a reply when the School sent their reply.
The lady had assured Elenore once more, and with a worried, shaky breath the Clement witch had nodded her consent to the letter being sent off to the school.
From there, it had been agonising, silent waiting for a reply from the school. After all, she could not write home about the application, she could not tell Grandmere what she had done in fear that her Maman would find out before she arrived home for the summer. And what if... what if Julliard School didn't accept her? What if the school decided that she was not good enough to become part of one of their programmes? Elenore knew, logically, that she was good enough to enter the school, her musical grades were the best anyone could achieve in the field, she couldn't take any further exams for the piano, and the rest of the instruments she could play were at an advanced level too.
For over a month the Hufflepuff witch waited.
Waited to have something to return to the Palace with a smile upon her lips when she could tell her Maman she would be attending the best school in the world for her degree.
Waited to see how the Lady Clement would take the news her youngest daughter would be leaving to study half way across the world.
Out of her grasp for a minimum of three years.
The note had come from the Post Office that morning, and using the Clement name to it's full advantage, had left the castle to retrieve her letter. All the way back to the castle Elenore had been tempted to stop, to open the letter and read what she hoped would be the acceptance letter she so desperately needed to be enclosed. But, the young witch had been patient, instead hurrying as quickly as was polite back to the Hufflepuff Common Room and enclosing herself in the embrace of one of the armchairs by the fire without looking around to see who else was there.
With careful, deliberate fingers, Elenore peeled the envelope open, ensuring she did not rip the paper in the process before sliding out the high quality paper of the Julliard School. Unfolding the letter, Elenore read quickly, but carefully, not noticing how her eyes were growing full of tears that would not hold themselves back.
Dear Elenore,
Congratulations! It gives me tremendous pleasure to inform you that the Julliard Orchestral faculty and the Admissions Committee have granted you admission to the Master of Music program at The Julliard School for the 2025-26 academic year.
Bringing her hand up to gently cover her mouth as she read those words again, Elenore held in the sigh of relief that threatened to escape her, she carefully sucked in the tears that wished to fall from her eyes, because nobody could know. Nobody would understand just how much this meant, because nobody had ever asked her what she wanted most, nobody would understand how much she'd wanted to be a part of the best Music School in the world.
But soon, soon enough her Maman would know.
And perhaps then...
Perhaps then she would be proud.
She was going to the best school in the world! ________________________________________________

| She glanced up as another girl entered the room but mostly payed her no mind, even as she sat in a chair near Harper in front of the fire. Harper continued her doodling, glancing up at the sound of ripping paper. She observed the girl opening her envelope before turning back to her own work.
She wouldn't want the girl to think she was nosy. She glanced at her again however, a small frown taking place on her face as she tried to remember if they'd ever talked before. She knew that the girl was obviously in the same house as her, but as for her as a person... She somewhat remembered a couple run ins, though she still didn't know much about the girl, other than the fact she was a year older than Harper.
Elenore. That was her name, Elenore Clement. Her eyes once more turned back to her work. Staring was rude, and that was the last thing Harper needed, was someone going off on her today.
She glanced again as a hand moved to cover the girl's mouth, and watched her for a moment, as the girl was quite obviously occupied with her letter. She seemed excited, and it made Harper smile softly.
"Good news?" She asked, softly enough she hoped she wouldn't startle the girl, knowing when you were focused on something it could be easy to tune everything else out. |

| Elenore's reaction had come forth in to relief. She'd never doubted her capabilities musically for the school's purposes, she'd only ever doubted her own capabilities under the scrutiny of her Maman. The older witch had always seemed so perfect when it came to playing, everybody in the Palace knew of her capabilities, knew of the music she had composed herself over the years, and Elenore always felt inferior to the talents of her Maman in that moment.
But, for once, she had felt good enough when she'd been accepted in to the Julliard School to study music, as she had wanted.
Once more for the witch, as had happened so many times in the weeks since the application had gone to the American school, the pictures of her Maman's reaction came forth in different wages. Shock that her daughter had applied to go to an American school, pride that her daughter had gotten in, curiosity of which programme Elenore had chosen? Elenore could not know in that moment, but she knew, without a doubt, that she would be going to America, no matter what her Maman's reaction was.
"Good news?"
Elenore jumped in that moment, quickly folding her letter over as her eyes moved to the source of the person who had spoken to her. After all, it couldn't be known to the rest of the castle. Elenore trusted no one in these walls to keep her secret, and that was not about to change now. "Yes, some good news." The older witch replied, a small smile upon her lips before she returned her attention to the letter in her hands. Tucking it carefully back in to it's envelope, and pushing down the seal once more, Elenore trusted that the letter and its contents were now safe.
It was clear, however, that Elenore was not open to giving more information than that in that moment as her eyes turned to the fire, her mind continuing to work through the news she'd just received.
It was almost painful, now, that she would have to wait to tell Maman her news.
But she would. ________________________________________________
