| Nikolai watched the success of the witch from his vantage point quietly. Not wishing to put Mariah off from her progress he merely kept his eyes on her, without trying to put her off. The first circle went well, Nikolai had to say, but as Mariah tried to straighten up, she lost control a little bit of the broom, making him dart forward in worry.
Not that he was needed, as Mariah caught herself a moment later from the short fall to the ground, and Nikolai backed away to give her space, not commenting because the witch looked highly determined to succeed without his interruptions.
The second effort proved much more fluid as Mariah made an S shape with her broom, the curves somewhat smooth but still a little nervous and edgy in places. Not that it mattered, of course, you didn't have to be completely fluid, and this meant they could start exploring!
"I may need to practice this a bit if that's alright,"
Mariah's comment slowed the boy's enthusiasm down, though, reminding him that she was still learning, and that heading up really high was not a good idea for a beginner. Reigning in his excitement, Nikolai thought for a moment, before moving back over to Mariah a little.
"We can just fly low around the grounds, and -- if you want to be adventurous, we can fly across the lake?" He proposed, clearly excited to get to do something, but he knew not to push too hard. "Or we can save that for another time, I don't mind," Nikolai added, not wanting that to be a pressured suggestion as he flew around in a small circle waiting for Mariah to decide how she wanted to continue.
Whatever the case, though, they could spend the rest of their time flying around aimlessly if it gave Mariah a sense of accomplishment and a solid base for them to explore more. ________________________________________________ProfileThanks to Kitty for the signature! <3 | |

| The suggestion of flying across the lake made her nervous, but Nikolai seemed so excited to explore, and she didn't want to disappoint him further. She knew she had made the right decision in holding off on flying higher, but she still felt a stab of guilt as he lost some of his enthusiasm. Even though he said he didn't mind, Mariah could tell he really wanted to do something more fun than practicing turns, and she didn't think she'd be able to say no as she looked at his hopeful face.
Besides, she didn't want to say no. She lacked some confidence in her flying skills, but the thought of gliding across the lake excited her, perhaps even a little more than it scared her. Perhaps it would be good to get out of her comfort zone. Mr. Weber always told her she was more capable than she thought she was. This would be a good experience to write about in her next letter.
So with a cautious smile, she nodded. "Okay," she agreed.
It would be fun, right? She'd always imagined flying over the lake would be an amazing experience. Now that she actually had the chance to do it, her heart pounded a little harder at the thought, but she realized it wasn't all nerves. Some of it was excitement. She was finally going to make her dreams a reality.
And besides, Nikolai would be right there with her to make sure nothing bad happened. Her smile grew as she leaned into her newfound confidence, committing herself to this course of action. It would be good. She would be fine. She could do this.
"Okay," she said again, more firmly. "Let's do this." |
