| Klaus nodded, accepting Clara's decision. Marcia had often preferred doing things the muggle way as well, as a consequence of her upbringing. Klaus quickly dismissed the thought, forcing himself to focus on the present.
As Clara set about blowing all the candles out, Klaus dropped his empty can into a nearby bin. He blew out the candle nearest to him, but let her do the rest, not moving lest he get in her way. When she finished and offered him another beer, he considered for a moment, tempted.
The beer itself was mediocre at best, but he could use a buzz, and the one can had only done so much. After a moment, he shrugged and grabbed another from the fridge but didn't open it just yet. He followed her to the door and stepped out into the hall.
He waited as Clara did whatever it was she felt she needed to do before they left. He didn't comment. He may not personally buy into lucky charms and karma, but he wouldn't begrudge her whatever made her feel better.
As she explained the walk ahead of them, he shrugged. "Can't be any worse than the walk here," he replied. As an auror, he'd been required to maintain peak physical condition. Though he may be slightly out of shape from the less strenuous past couple of months, he'd never had a problem with walking.
The two of them made their way down all sixteen flights of stairs in relative silence, then exited the building and started off down the street. Klaus let Clara lead the way, since she was more familiar with the area. He popped open the beer as they walked. |

| The walk was surprisingly pleasant due to several factors. Firstly, her silent companion remained so for the most part. Secondly, Klaus was not in a hurry which was both calming as it instilled at every step that there was no emergency and it also meant Clara and her short limbs didn't have to work overtime to keep up. Finally, unlike Kit who had drawn out his camera and started clicking everything in sight the first time he'd seen her neighborhood, his friend was at least not embarrassing her. As they passed by several shops and carts the photographer had labelled "ethnically charming" but which Clara more bluntly referred to as "rundown", the man neither requested she give him a tour nor pointed out how "uniquely enchanting" the area was.
She was going to have to work extra hard to make sure the kid didn't turn out as pretentious as Kit Harrington. And boy did she have her work but out for her.
They made several short stops on the way simply because whenever they ran into someone who knew her, they had to stop to say hello. And as it turned out, Clara knew a lot of people. Far from being the only psychic in a fifty mile radius who did readings for cheap, she was also the town gossip and her circle had been clamoring for Clara to show up ever since mid August when her place of residence had suddenly changed from Dingy Studio in Salinas to Huge Fucking Mansion in Main Carmel.
If any of the people who stopped them raised a questioning eyebrow Klaus's way, the Seer ignored them. Nor did she move to make introductions. He was not going to be a regular by her side so it was best her friends and acquaintances didn't get attached.
Of course, just as she thought this, her feet came to an automatic stop, making her lurch backwards as her eyes glazed over. The vision was so much clearer than it had been before, his face and chest more in focus and the Californian tan on it more pronounced. Clara's hair not only longer but... shiner? Not dyed in it's usual fashion but all of them the same colour for once. No sign of tattoos to be seen despite the tank top she sported and a further inspection of her legs showed them encased in jeans she would never have been able to afford even if she saved her whole life.
The roof now had deck chairs, and a small shed type building to one side. Clara would know that room anywhere.
The witch returned to the here and now a minute later, though it felt like she'd been out for ages. That was usually the case with her more intense visions. The clearer the picture, the more exhausting it was on her body, leaving her weak and breathless. Fortunately they had reached the bus stop before her spell had hit and there had been a bench to senselessly sink into. Had Klaus helped her into it? She didn't know. But before she could ask or he could express concern, the great smoky chugging beast of the city was pulling up and without a word, the two climbed aboard, Clara still a little shaky from her episode.
Because like it or not, fate had decided that Klaus Weber was here to stay. ________________________________________________

| Every time they stopped as someone greeted Clara, Klaus stood rather awkwardly off to the side, pretending to be preoccupied with something or other: his now empty can of beer, a thread on his sleeve, a nearby window. He had very little interest in introducing himself to anyone, and Clara seemed to feel the same, so he stayed silent throughout each encounter, of which there were far too many.
Finally, they made it to the bus stop.
Suddenly, Clara halted in her tracks and Klaus pulled up short behind her.
"Wh--Clara?" He asked with some concern as he caught a glimpse of her face, her eyes unfocused and face slack. She swayed, and he caught her instinctively by the shoulders and carefully set her down on the nearby bench.
He knelt down beside her and peered into her glassy eyes, trying to understand what was happening. "Clara?"
Before he could start to panic, her eyes refocused and she seemed to deflate, as if suddenly exhausted. He breathed a sigh of relief, opened his mouth to ask what was wrong, but was interrupted by the bus that pulled up to the curb. Casting a worried glance toward the woman who was now shakily rising to her feet, he followed her onto the bus, keeping close in case she needed someone to steady her. Or in case whatever had just happened happened again.
The two of them sat down, claiming a pair of empty seats near the back of the sparsely populated bus. Once they were situated and the bus had started moving, Klaus glanced over at her to make sure she was okay.
"What was that?" He asked, confusion and concern battling for dominance over his expression.

| The witch was almost certain she wouldn't be able to navigate the large steps needed to board the vehicle, but somehow she managed with her companion hovering close by. Usually fiercely independent, the mere thought of someone looking out for her would have annoyed the witch but she was too drained to consider it now and let him guide her to the empty seats at the back. Thankfully the driver of the bus did not feel the need to play loud music, giving her some much needed peace as she settled in, her head falling backwards in the seat as her limbs gave in to exhaustion.
"What was that?"
"Vision,' she replied shortly, dragging the words out with effort from the depths of her throat. "The kind that comes true ninety five percent of the time," the young woman added miserably. Had she been more aware or even marginally less out of it, she would have stopped to explain it wasn't always like this. That her gift didn't render her an invalid on a daily basis. That usually she coexisted with it quite well. Only some things - and rare they were - came with such incalculable intensity that they sapped her of energy. The worst ever had left her passed out for hours. But that had only happen twice in her life. Once when she was fifteen and the second one right after meeting Kit Harrington three years ago.
"Do you have scars on your body?' she asked absentmindedly, eyes closed to the world as she tried to regain some sense of balance and energy into her being. Clara usually worked by an ethical standard only she understood, but it did involve telling people when she had visions about them. She had only deviated from this ethical standard a few times but now found herself considering her options anew.
If he didn't have those scars, he was going to get hurt in future. And if that was the case, she had to tell him so he could take preventive measures. If he already had them however... Then she had just given away that her vision somehow related to him and his bare chest on display. ________________________________________________

| He didn't know what he'd been expecting, but he didn't hide his surprise - not that she would have noticed anyway, with her eyes closed and head leaning back against the seat. While fortune tellers were relatively common, true seers were few and far between, even in their world. Klaus had only met one other in his lifetime.
He gathered from her intense reaction, the way she seemed drained of all energy, that this kind of vision didn't happen often. This was not the kind of vision that her clients received when they dropped by her apartment. This was something she couldn't control.
Whatever she had seen, it meant something.
He wondered what it was, of course, but he hardly knew proper protocol for these things. Was he allowed to ask? Was she allowed to share? Were her visions prophetic or preventable? Bad or good? Did something specific trigger them, or were they random?
Her question made the gears turn in his head as he studied her warily.
"I do," he answered carefully, now even more curious about what she'd seen. He had many scars - some from his earlier days as an auror, but most from only a few months ago. The vast majority of them crisscrossed his arms and torso. She'd seen him, then, in her vision. But what about him? And what had the future told her about his scars? |

| Clara didn't open her eyes at his soft admission, merely sagging a little more in her seat. It was a relief to know at least, it meant he wasn't gong to be getting hurt over the next however many number of years her vision had been from. He had looked healthier in fact, at least more so than he looked now. But then again Clara had always been partial to a bit of a tan.
She spent the rest of the journey blinking in and out of a daze, recuperating as the bus chugged along at its usual speed. It was a two hour ride to the nearest point from Kit's, though she doubted the man had ever appreciated the distance she'd had to travel at the drop of a hat. He probably assumed she teleported like he did, and why wouldn't he? She had only told him otherwise a hundred times.
At some point, her head dropped from the headrest to Klaus's shoulder, finding purchase on the solid plane and comfort in the warm skin. How long it stayed there, she had no idea but after some time had passed, she was quietly awakened to be told they were there. The rest had done its job, Clara was almost back to normal as she disembarked from the bus, a fresh spring in her step.
There was no need to talk about what had just happened, perhaps there never will be. When not exhausted and defeated by the string of fates, the witch could easily believe she still had a shot. Destiny may already be written but Clara wouldn't be Clara if she didn't try her hardest to fight it every step of the way. ________________________________________________
