| Caelan wasn’t much for fighting. Well, he actually just wasn’t much for the offense part of fighting. He’d seen his Aunt Brooke, a vicious Auror at her job, through penseive memories fighting the most horrifying things and he just about died at the thought of having to do what she did on a daily basis. With that in mind, however, he still contacted her to ask her if Defense Against the Dark Arts was really a class for him. He knew Stephan wanted to follow in his mother’s footsteps of being an Auror, but he didn’t expect Caelan to want to. So regardless of the quivering fear in his stomach he sought out the classroom. To his relief, the teacher seemed kind.
He still winced at the implication of ‘fun’ in class. The shield charm was the greatest thing ever invented he decided as he sat up straighter in his seat, his magic vibrating at the idea.
“The Shield Charm creates a barrier around the caster in order to deflect magical threats,” he answered after raising his hand. Pride filled the youngest Brennham as he realized how easily he was able to speak up in class without either of his siblings or his best friend there to encourage him. |

| As a couple of answers came to him, Jake nodded towards the two boys that had answered, smiling at the fact they had both given correct answers. "Very good, both of you take five points each for your houses." Jake told the boys, always working on the basis of encouragement through the points system to hopefully get a higher level of participation.
"The Shield Charm we will be looking at today is the basic form of Protego, as Bennett said. There are higher levels, but we will look at those as you progress through the years here. Caelan was also right, the Shield Charm creates a barrier between yourself and an oncoming threat, whether its a spell, or an object. It should be noted though, that the Shield Charm won't protect you from everything, but again, you will learn more as you progress through the years.
"To cast the spell, you must clearly say the word Protego and bring your wand down in a straight line. It helps to imagine a shield before you too."
Allowing a few moments for the information to sink in, Jake continued, lifting up a bucket of beanbag balls on to his desk. "I would like for you to work in pairs, or threes. Gently throw one of these towards your partner and see if they can block it. You can throw them faster when you grow more comfortable with the process if you'd like to. But, please don't worry, these don't hurt if they hit you." Jake explained, hoping that made sense. "When you're ready, you can start." ________________________________________________~ Auror ~ Profile ~ DADA Professor ~ ~ In a Relationship ~ 36 ~ Father ~ 6' ~ American Accent ~

| Naomi didn't speak up in class, for once, allowing a few of the other students to speak. She knew Jake wouldn't hold it against her. When he announced the exercise of the day, she didn't even have to ask if Finley wanted to work with her. She darted forward to the desk to grab one of the beanbag balls before retreating with Finley to the corner of the room. She knew her friend wasn't very confident in his magic, so he definitely wouldn't want to practice in the middle.
"Do you mind throwing first?" she asked. "I want to practice the charm." What she really wanted was to save Finley from going first, which she was pretty sure he would hate. She handed him the ball when he assented and backed up. "Ok, go."
Her first shield flickered out right as the ball would have hit it, leaving her open for a gentle hit to the chest. She scowled, tossing the ball back to Finley. Her next shield deflected, but dissipated on contact. Her third blocked the ball perfectly, but her fourth flickered in and out, letting the ball through to hit her again. Naomi scowled and concentrated herder. By her fifth, sixth, and seventh shields, she had at least started blocking the ball every time, even if her shield shattered immediately afterward. After her tenth shield blocked the ball perfectly, she asked, "Do you want to switch?"

| Finley was quite surprised by all the new faces in the class, but was very thankful that Naomi was here. It made everything so much easier when you had a familiar face by your side. Neither of them had spoken up though, the younger students seemed to have beaten them to it. Not that Finley minded, though Jake made him feel comfortable, Defence Against the Dark Arts was not a lesson he enjoyed.
The task, from the outset, was not a difficult one, though Finley knew his shield charm wasn't great.
But, not a moment after they'd been told to start, Naomi was off to collect the beanbags and when she came back, he nodded his agreement to throwing first. Not that his hand-eye coordination was very good, but he could probably throw it somewhere in the right direction. This was less stressful that trying to do the charm, anyway.
With a little concentration, Finley managed the first throw quite successfully, though when it hit his best friend, he managed a soft "S-sorry." In her direction, concentrating on trying to catch the ball as it came back. He almost managed, and after quickly retrieving the ball from the floor, they tried again.
With each turn, Finley smiled when Naomi managed, and gave her a reassuring nod every time she didn't. He didn't speak, mostly because they didn't need to. By the tenth time, Naomi had managed the spell quite well, and he was proud of his best friend for her capabilities.
When she asked him if he wanted to switch, Finley looked back at his best friend, the worry that he usually felt when he tried to do magic was quite clear, but after taking a deep breath, he nodded. "O-okay." He managed, throwing the ball gently to Naomi before taking out his wand. "S-sorry. If this g-goes wrong." Finley added, more quietly than normal.
He readied himself for the first throw, trying to calm his nerves before he nodded to Naomi. When the ball moved his way, Finley said the spell (with his usual stutter), a spark fizzled from his wand and then died away, leaving the soft ball to hit him. With a small sigh, Finley picked the ball up and threw it back to the witch opposite him.
They tried again, five more times, to little avail, and Finley threw the ball back once more disheartened. He tried so hard, but it just never seemed to work... Nodding once more, Finley readied himself, and as the ball sailed towards him, another spark left his wand despite the incantation and singed the ball. Finley's eyes went wide as it hit the floor at his feet. "Oh n-no." He murmured, looking to Naomi worriedly. "I d-don't know... W-what am I doing w-wrong?" He asked, though whether Naomi could tell he wasn't sure. This just seemed pointless right now. |

| Ellie nervously braided her hair as she rushed down the corridor towards her Defense Against the Dark Arts class. She had spent most of her break looking for food. She'd woken up late, skipped breakfast and headed to class later than necessary. At first she had been totally unashamed of her decision to do so, but now she was thoroughly ashamed. She thanked whatever deity that existed that an elf named Turnipy was able to get her bread and butter with sugar sprinkled on it. She almost cried her stomach was rumbling so loudly. She was able to get some water and she spent most of her break just savoring the food. She didn't feel too comfortable talking to anyone as she'd woken up late in her own sassy attempt to have attitude, which was stupid because that totally backfired on her. She ended up falling asleep against a wall and then having to rush to Defense Against Arts. She winced as she realized she was so late she came in to almost literally the middle of the lesson.
If she were anyone else she might have just tried to sneak in but that would have just been stupid, she was late and the best thing to do then was to accept it, so she waited for him to finish explaining before waiting for her punishment or whatever. Ellie shifted back and forth on her heels and her toes, her hands clasped behind her back; she was planning on snagging Caelan as a partner as soon as humanly possible unless she got sent to the Headmaster's. For now all she could do is wait against the door, because just assuming she was in the safe zone was stupid.
"So Professor, should I join the others or head on down to the Headmaster's?" She asked, rocking back and forth still. |

| Jake watched the eagerness of two older Ravenclaws with a small smile on his lips. Over the last couple of years, Jake had become aware of Finley's lack of magical prowess, but he supported the boy, much like his friend Naomi did. Naomi worked hard in her own studies too, and for that much, Jake was thankful.
It made his experience much more enjoyable for Jake when the kids were enthusiastic.
When the door opened, Jake looked away just as Finley had stepped up to have a go, focusing on the new student who'd just arrived. At her question of going to see the Headmaster, Jake smiled and shook his head. "There won't be any need for that." He assured the witch. "Just try not to be late next time, otherwise I will probably have to send you to Professor Jameson." Jake explained, though he wouldn't really do that, he would just be less nice than he usually was.
"You'll need to speak to one of your classmates to catch up fully, but we'll be working on the shield charm today." Jake explained, motioning for her to find a partner. ________________________________________________~ Auror ~ Profile ~ DADA Professor ~ ~ In a Relationship ~ 36 ~ Father ~ 6' ~ American Accent ~

| Pair up. Okay, Dan was friendly enough, that shouldn't be a problem. Except that he didn't really know anyone there aside from his housemates and even they weren't much more than familiar faces and acquaintances. Still, maybe he could pair up with one of them if he couldn't find someone from his own year to do this with.
Maybe the girl who just walked in would pair up with him. It looked like the two Ravenclaws already paired up, but that was hardly a surprise. Everybody else seemed to know somebody, and here he was, wondering when he'd become so shy. Buck up, Danny-boy, there's bound to be somebody willing to pair up with a cute, charming, southern gentleman. He flashed his most winning smile as he gazed about the room in an attempt to make eye contact with someone. Maybe he'd pair up with the other Gryffindor girl. She didn't seem to have anyone either. |

| Emilia groaned inwardly as the professor asked them to pair up and she reluctantly went up and grabbed a couple of the beanbags for herself and whoever would be her partner. She looked around the room and noted that people had already begun to pair up and nervousness hit her. She didn't know anyone and she didn't want to be paired with a boy, period. Boys had the potential to hurt her but girls couldn't hurt her as bad right?
She saw the Ravenclaw girl pair up with a boy and then looked to the Gryffindor girl in the trousers. She didn't seem very enthusiastic about the class and it made Emilia nervous to think of talking to her.Biting her lip, she ducked her head before glancing around the room again. A new student entered, another Gryffindor girl who spoke to the professor. There were two other Hufflepuff boys that she could've asked if her fear of being hurt by a boy hadn't been so great.
When she turned around, she could hear the professor tell her to have someone catch her up and Emilia smiled and walked over to her. Rubbing the back of her neck nervously, she uttered a soft, "Do you want to work with me?" Her cheeks flushing a bright red. |
