| James had had something of a heavy weekend with the lads, so instead of teaching the first to fourth years on the Monday, he had conveniently moved it to join with the older year's classes later in the week. It would give them a little more time to prepare, he supposed.
Checking the room was clean one last time, James moved back to the front, taking a seat at his desk with a slightly larger sigh than was necessary. He was sure this class was going to be bigger than normal, but he had planned for that.
Something of a twist on the Great British Bake off, was what he had in mind, something to get the students interested in his subject, because he was quite sure a lot of them found his subject a bore. Not that he cared, of course, he liked it, and nothing would change that.
Checking the clock, James waited for the first student to arrive, trying not to look too tired already. |

| Aiden had been pretty much happy the whole weekend however when the week rolled around he knew it was time to get his head in gear and concetrate on studies. After all OWLs were coming up for him and he knew that if he didn't get EE or higher his siblings would be annoyed with him and he didn't want that.
Stepping into the Potions classroom, Aiden gave the professor a curt nod. "Hello professor." He said with a soft tone of voice as he moved to sit in his usual seat in the middle of the room and in the middle row. He hated sitting at the front and he just as equally hated sitting at the back so he decided the middle was alright. He let out a soft sigh as he realxed in his seat. He had heard that the class would actually be all seven years and frankly he was so not looking forward to it. |

| Since finding out about Jake's accident whilst on duty with the Aurors, Victoria had not quite been herself. Her smile was a little strained, and it didn't quite meet her eyes. She was, of course, very worried about her big brother, but didn't know what she could do about it.
He'd been let out of St Mungo's after a couple of days, but he'd been written out of work until the end of the month. The Ministry had insisted he didn't come back to the school for the moment because he needed rest. Victoria wasn't overly happy about this, because it meant her contact with her brother was limited, but she understood the need to quell questions.
Entering the Potions classroom, Victoria sent a small smile towards Aiden, and murmured a soft hello to the professor. It was obvious she wasn't feeling herself as she took up her seat in the front row, but she would carry on, because Jake would be so upset if she didn't.
And that, she simply couldn't face. ________________________________________________ | |

| Naomi headed down to the Potions with Finley, clattering down flight after flight of stairs until they reached the dungeons. While Potions didn't excite her the way some of her classes did, Naomi still enjoyed the work and getting everything just right, despite her first impression of the professor. Professor Balan was curt and to-the-point and undeniably In Charge, but he was also patient as long as you actually attempted the work, so Naomi found that she could get along in the class just fine.
Holding the door for Finley to enter in front of her, Naomi noted that two of the older years were already there. She had been surprised to receive the notice that their class was combining, but decided that it would be ok.
Potions wasn't like other classes; it was partially about technique, but mostly about paying attention to what you were doing. That evened the playing field between the years, so she was fairly confident that they'd be fine. |

| Aaron liked the art of potion making, but he would never tell anyone. He would normally sit in the middle of the classroom, because he didn't like the message the back sent off. He nodded his head in greeting to Professor Balan, He didn't mind the Professor either because he straight to the point. He pulled out his things and waited patiently.
While doing so, he took to thinking. He thought of nothing in particular, just small things like studying and what not. He looked up to see younger students and it made him smile a little, as he remembered the shock he had when he read the notice board. He suddenly, erased all emotion from his face once more, as he couldn't let the emotions he knew that were dying to expose themselves control him. He swore when his brother died and his mother started muttering things about him getting blown up as well, that he wouldn't grieve for him. He couldn't let that happen.
Shaking his head, he looked up and arranged everything neatly on his desk, waiting for instructions. |

| Venus made her way down to the dungeons once more. She wasn't as confident as she should have been, but her last potion didn't turn out too good, and she was determined to make this one perfect. She had imagined herself walking into the room with her head held high, no shame in her posture. But that was not at all how it had happened.
She ended up walking in quickly with her head down, and avoided eye contact with anything and anyone. Giving up her confidence at the door way, she pulled out her text book and notes slowly. This couldn't be any more shameful for the Hufflepuff, but she raised her head and gave a soft hello to Professor Balan as she pulled out her work. She felt as if she was a kind of disgrace to the room and art of potions itself. Looking down once more she began to skim her notes, still determined to make this potion the best he had ever seen. |

| Alberi had no idea if he liked Potions or not. It was interesting for sure but it wasn't his type of activity. Alberi definitely liked staying in a dark room doing something but brewing potions? Not his favourite. It wasn't like Chemistry. There things had a logical explanation why you did something. Her you just plopped things down into a cauldron carefully and followed instructions step by step. In Chemistry it didn't really matter which element you would mix first but in Potions that was fatal. And one other difference? Alberi was ten times better in muggle Chemistry than wizard Potions.
Now, he boy walked down to the dungeons. He really liked them but he hardly had time to come and be alone here. He would either be studying, reading additionally or giving himself challenges. He didn't want to grow used to magic. When he grew up, he wasn't sure if he wanted a magical profession. He was used to being a muggle, not a wizard. And sometimes things just buzzard him out. And for once he had a class he isn't good in, not in practical use of what he knew.
Entering the room, he noticed quiet a number of people. The boy had almost forgotten that the lesson would be with the older classes as well! Seeing a free table at the front, he sat on it and waited for the rest of the class. Happily there wasn't a dog here today. And that was enough for Alberi to have a good lesson. |

| Finley slipped through the door just after Naomi, sending a very small, shy smile towards the professor in greeting before following his best friend to their usual seat. Potions was something they'd been doing well together this year, and the Ravenclaw hoped it was going to continue in much the same manner.
He was a little confused as to why their class had been moved, but he knew better than to question a professor as to their reasoning. Perhaps it was to do with Professor Newbury's absence, Finley wasn't sure.
Sitting quietly, Finley looked around the classroom at the faces of the older students. He didn't know many of them, nor was he likely to get to know them due to his timid personality. But he was inquisitive by nature, which meant he wanted to try to place them if he could, if only to pass the time. |

| Waiting for the class to fill up was a tedious process, not one that James was at all fond of, but he had little and less choice about this. Barely acknowledging the greetings he was given, James waited for the clock to hit the hour and then he stood up.
"Welcome back." He called across the din of conversation that was buzzing in the classroom. He didn't have much time for such conversations, and instead gave only a minute for the class to settle down. "Today is the last lesson for the year, but don't think that means you will be slacking." He told the class, his eyes scanning the room to make sure everyone was listening to him.
"Today will be a challenge for everyone. You will be working on your own this lesson." James explained, deciding to mix it up a little from usual. "You will not be given a set potion to work on, you are to pick a potion from your book. I want each of you to push yourselves, choose a potion that really tests all areas of your potioneering skill. I will be marking you on not only the degree of success of the potion, but the level of difficulty you apply. I'm not expecting first years to make a seventh year potion, however, I'm expecting you to pick a potion that's pushing your limits, not something beyond it." James clarified before motioning to the store cupboard.
"You have one hour, impress me." |

| After quietly slipping into class once the doors were opened, Silas watched people filter in with disinterest. He tapped his quil against his book as his mind wandered away from his Potions classroom to his room, to the chest he visited always after studying. The pictures of him and Kiyoko he held so fondly and the smiles she gave him so freely. Her spirit, her freedom and her joy were captured in those images and they always made him smile. It was time to move on, and so despite all his wants to drift off into La-La Land and to his memories where he could fully be with Kiyoko, Silas grounded his wayward thoughts and paid close attention to what Professor Balan was saying. Silas nodded in understanding before pulling open his book and searching through the potions before settling on a Sixth Year potion - ahead a bit but nothing he couldn't handle assuredly.
He rolled his primly pressed sleeves up and got to work on the Elixir to Induce Euphoria Potion. He retrived the Shrivelfig, Porcupine quils, Sophorous beans, Wormwood, and sprig of Peppermint.
1. Add Shrivelfig
With the cauldron still getting ready to boil and his protective gloves on Silas stared at the Shrivelfig after reading the passage in his instructional book. It asked for Shrivelfig but anyone older would know that it actually meant the purple liquid it held. After extracting the juices, he took a small glee in noting that it was following the way it was supposed to look.
2. Add Porcupine quills
He added the six that was instructed.
3. Stir four times anti-clockwise
Silas stirred it with the stirrer stick four times counterclockwise, his other hand already holding the bit of Peppermint he needed.
4. Add a sprig of Peppermint to counteract side-effects.
Once the four stirs were done he tossed it in quickly watching it ease any of the counter side-effects that were rising before getting the hardest part.
5. Add Sopophorous beans
Once finding out he was a wizard, his mother upped him on all of the historical events and that included the Golden Trio. He read about Severus Snape and his potion skills and was entranced by his ability. He racked his brain for 15 seconds before finding the correct instructions for dealing with Sopophorous beans, he turned them flat on their sides and cut into them. Quickly Silas added the juice to the potion watching it start to take on a pretty hue, murky and on the verge of green and yellow.
6. Add Wormwood
As he tossed the Wormwood in he nodded in satisfaction as the yellow was starting to become a little more powerful than the green.
7. Stir six times anti-clockwise
He did this easily and let out a small smile of satisfaction as it was officially taking on it's proper yellow hue. He waved his wand over it to complete the entire thing before raising his hand for Professor Balan to inspect his work. |
