| It had been a fair few months now, since the night Naomi and Daniel had agreed that they would be something more than best friends. It had been nice, to say they least, coming home to someone who truly valued you - he knew Naomi had before, but now it just seemed more than before.
They had been quiet about their relationship for the last four months, mostly because they didn't want to cause Theo any stress, especially seeing as neither one of them knew whether it would be long term until they tried. Daniel hoped this would be long term though, Naomi meant the world to him, and Theo... well, Theo was simply making life more and more fun with every day that passed.
With February coming around, Daniel knew that it was Theo's birthday, and after persuading Naomi to let him plan a surprise for Theo (and Naomi really) he'd set about making the best day he could possibly think of. Which meant a day around creatures. Theo loved creatures, and Daniel couldn't think of a better birthday present than seeing dragons.
Well...
There was more to the surprise than that.
After gathering up enough supplies for the day, Daniel had shown the two of them to the portkey, holding on to Theo for Naomi, the three of them had been transported across to Romania, and with a careful landing, Daniel put Theo back on the ground, holding his hand which felt very natural now.
"Are you ready for your surprise?" Daniel asked, turning to look at Theo. He wasn't sure how much the boy would guess from the mountainous area, or if Naomi would catch on, but after a moment, Daniel started to lead them up the hill. "There's a shelter just up the hill, Theo, that's where we're going. But you have to promise to stay close." Daniel explained, hoping the subtle warning in his tone would make sure Theo understood.
It was no more than a five minute walk, and they made good pace, when they got closer, there were people around, each waving to Daniel because they had worked together for a time. Daniel waved back, ad they moved in to a shelter only a few moments later. After letting them both in through the first door, Daniel came to a stop, lowering himself down to Theo's level. "Okay, now, through the door is a very special... creature that I want you to meet. You have to be gentle with him. But it's safe." Daniel explained, the last one more for Naomi's benefit than Theo's. "Ready?" He added a moment later, waiting only long enough for Theo's answer before opening the door.
There, on the floor, was a baby dragon, no more than a day or two old, only capable of blowing smoke through it's nostrils.
Daniel simply smiled, looking to Naomi for approval as Theo moved towards the creature excitedly. |

| Despite the nerves that always fluttered up around Daniel, Naomira found herself extremely excited to be more with him. It wouldn't be too hard; he already had her trust. She just didn't want to burden him with too many of her problems so although she told him about her worries and whatnot, she kept the deeper stuff to herself. Her biggest fear was losing him and she didn't want him to know that it was even on the forefront of her brain because it was just wrong to expect him to understand that she couldn't control the way she felt. She couldn't help feeling worried or nervous or scared all the time. It happened without intention, but she knew that no matter what happened she'd be there for him.
Naomi completely adored Daniel, not just for her but for Theo too. Theo was a happy kid, happier these few days and he was growing bigger - it made her smile and warm inside because he was so damn healthy.
"Yeah yeah yeah!" Theo shouted excitedly before covering his mouth and his mother's grimace as he tightened his hand around his mom's hand, "but my tummy hurts, why couldn't we just walk? Are we going to see walking mountains? A shelter? Like for puppies?" Theo's brows furrowed together and his mouth twisted in confusion.
"You'll see, baby boy." She smiled warmly and leaned down to press a kiss onto Theo's head as he continued to blabber on about how mountains walking was an idiom (though she was sure it wasn't she tuned him out momentarily), she looked up at Daniel and gave him a hopeful glance before focusing back on her boy.
She found herself in awe at how many people knew Daniel - though it shouldn't have been a surprise, she and her son got nods of acknowledgement, but she only flushed and looked at the ground tightening her hand around Theo's hand. Theo acted much differently - all too social for his own good.
"Hi! I'm Theo!" He said brightly. "This is my mommy. I'm six today! I had special birthday hotcakes cos I'm six too!" He swung their hands as he said these things. Some people laughed, most people just smiled and let them keep walking. Normally Naomira would chastise Theo about being too loud, but his excitement was palpatable. However after a while Theo quieted naturally looking up at his mom's uncomfortable face with an apology in his eyes. She smiled and shushed his worries away. She loved his energy even if it could wear her out somedays.
"Gentle with him?" Theo asked confusedly, but added nothing else. "I'm ready I think, mommy is ready right?" She nodded and smiled at Daniel. She mouthed a quiet thank you to him, smiling at him.
"Dragon!" Theo shouted trying to let go of his mom's hand but she was quick to grab it back and hold him back from running at the creature, he stopped in his tracks before looking up at his mother, "'m sorry mommy and Uncle Danny but this is so cool," he breathed out with really wide eyes as he stared at the baby dragon. "Mommy it's a real dragon. It's breathing and stuff, even if it's really small." He added, sheepishly he reached out for his uncle's hand. Naomi let go of his hand then, crossing her arms and nodding to Daniel in silent acquiescence that she trusted him to do whatever with Theo.
"Uncle Danny what do I do?" He asked nervously as he tightened his hand around his uncle's worriedly.
"Daniel this is amazing," she said, her eyes soft at the glee radiating from Theo's small being. |

| Theo's energy was always something Daniel could count on, to help him know he was doing the right things. Naomi's apprehension often made him second guess his ideas, but when he focused on her son's reaction (or possible reaction) he knew that it would all be worth it. Naomi would, and always had, come round to whatever Daniel was doing so long as Theo was happy and safe.
"We couldn't walk because we're in another country." Daniel told his nephew with patience, excitement tinting his tone as he explained. "We're in Romania." Daniel added, letting the information sink in so Theo could tell all of his friends about their trip. Well, perhaps not all of it, but some anyway.
The question on the shelter Daniel allowed Naomi to answer, a small smile playing on his lips at the six year old's energy in that moment.
Daniel's smile only grew as Theo spoke to almost everyone they passed. Not that they minded, the Dragon Trainer (for the most part) were easy going people.
"Yes, you have to be careful. Otherwise you might hurt him." Daniel explained, and almost as soon as he had, Theo had seen the dragon and tried to burst forward. Naomi was quick enough to react, which made it okay. Letting out the breath that had caught when the boy nearly ran at the dragon, Daniel nodded to Naomi to tell her it was okay.
Taking his nephew's hand, Daniel led Theo safely up to the small dragon that was sat beneath the lights, basking in the warmth and knelt down beside the six year old. "What you do, is you whisper whilst you're around the dragon." Daniel explained, his tone hushed as his attention focused on the boy. "And you treat it very nicely, like this." He continued, reaching out with his hand and petting the dragon down the spine very gently. It stirred a little, but not much, enjoying the affection.
"Now you try, Theo." Daniel prompted, taking the little boy's hand and showing him how to do it too. After a couple of pets, Daniel let Theo do it himself, still watching carefully because he knew that kids could get over excited quickly.
At Naomi's words, Daniel looked up at her momentarily, giving her a warm smile. "I figured something special would be nice." Daniel explained softly, before motioning to the baby dragon. "And, I heard about this, and thought it would be too good to miss on his birthday." He explained whilst Theo was busy. His eyes turned back to the dragon a moment later, keeping an eye on everything.
"Would you like to feed him?" Daniel asked, motioning to the small bucket at the side of the room. "Or shall we let mummy bring the food over?" Daniel asked, though whether you would call brandy and chicken blood food, Daniel wasn't sure, but that's what they ate. |
