Humphrey endured Madam Malkin's somehow, even though he felt exhausted by the time he left. After they had fitted and pinned his regular robes they had to do the same with the dress ones. He had protested and tried to convince his mother and sister he wouldn't need them, but the two had him outnumbered and he had no choice but to wait it out. As they walked his eyes lit up at the sight of the ice cream parlour, and his mom handed him some coins before giving him a smile. "Us girls will go off on our own for a bit. Meet you at Flourish and Blott's in an hour." she told him. Humphrey stared for a moment in shock with his jaw hanging open for a moment. Once he'd gathered his wits, he took off toward the place like a shot, which made Casey giggle before walking off with mum.

Entering the shop, Humphrey breathed in and smacked his lips a little as the scent of all different flavors of ice cream announced themselves to him. Not surprisingly, there was a bit of a line and he stepped into it, trying to decide on what combination he would get once he got to the front. "Nothing beats ice cream on a hot summer day." he said happily, and began humming quietly while he waited. It was a tune he'd heard on the radio, but he didn't remember the lyrics to it. Something about it just made it stick in his brain, and he didn't really care if other people thought it was annoying because he wasn't doing anything wrong.

Her parents had dropped her off at Diagon Alley with just enough money for her essentials (and a little more for lunch), but Chrisy had, without their knowledge, managed to save up some of her pocket money. She had more money than she would have liked on her persons, but if it meant being able to get some art supplies, it was worth the risk. The rest of her morning was spent at the different shops.

Having bought everything she needed, she checked the amount left over from lunch and found she had just enough for an ice cream. Her parents wouldn't be back to pick her up for another three hours, which gave her ample time to relax, and so, she made her way to Florean Flortescue's Parlour, a place she hardly got to eat.

As she sat, she took out her new sketch book, hidden in between her text books for that year, and a pencil, intending to test the quality of the paper (it wasn't the best, but it was all she could afford). Before she knew it, she had sketched out an entire picture, lost in thought.

Humphrey was getting a little impatient, and as he looked around the shop he saw somebody who most likely also went to Hogwarts sit down at a table and start sketching. Although he was loathe to give up his spot in the line, he knew the ice cream would be waiting for him no matter what time he got there; so, after a moment's thought he walked over and took a peek at it. To his surprise, it was a drawing of a baby eating an ice cream cone. Whoever she was, he had to admit she was quite good. Maybe she could give him some tips on drawing, if they became friends that was.

After an awkward moment of him staring at the picture, he moved into her line of sight and cleared his throat to announce himself. "Do you mind if I sit here? The line's pretty long." Humphrey said, nodding to the queue of people waiting to be served. "You're really talented." he added, after a moment of thought. Hopefully, she wouldn't think him too weird for looking at the baby eating ice cream picture. To some it may seem an odd thing to draw, but he thought it was pretty cool.

She was so lost in thought that, while she felt the presence of someone nearby, it didn't fully register until she heard the clearing of a throat, and at once looked up, panic filling her mind for a moment, although her outward appearance was the same as always. What if it was her dad or mum come early? At least if it were Jason she could bribe him not to tell their parents she'd been drawing again, but if it were either one of them, she was in serious trouble.

But, it wasn't, and slowly she forced a smile at the person there, a young boy. Perhaps he was from Hogwarts, but she had never seen him around before.

"Go ahead," she told him, tone soft but genuine. If he wanted to try and be friends with her, he could, but she'd bet anything that by the end of the year, he'd be chased away like all the others who'd tried so many times before. The only real friend she had - or rather, the one person who hadn't left - was Luke, and even he came and went, never fully sticking around. But, the male appeared to be socially awkward, so she didn't quite mind.

At the compliment, she smiled a real smile that lasted but a fraction of a second. "Thank you," she said, blushing a little, as she sent a glance towards the couple a few rows down from her; it was their child that she had based the drawing on, when it had grabbed the ice cream earlier.

When she said he could have a seat he let out the breath he'd been holding and happily sat down. Humphrey could tell she seemed a bit awkward, like he often did at times. It was the way the smile didn't quite reach her eyes that let him know she'd probably prefer it if he wasn't there. However, he wasn't going to give up on what could be a very interesting conversation or friend without even making an effort. Not for the first time, he wished he had his sister's ability to make people happy or laugh without even trying.

Figuring he should probably introduce himself, he spoke up again. "I'm Humphrey, by the way. About to start my second year in Hufflepuff." he told the older girl. Humphrey reached into his pocket and pulled out a mini sketchbook and pencil before flipping to the drawing he'd last been working on. It was a sketch of the pond near his house and the willow tree next to it, though something about it wasn't quite right. Erasing one of the slopes of the hill, he tried drawing it again with a bit sharper curve to get the angle right. Though it wasn't perfect by any means, it looked better. Once he'd done that he started filling in the strands on the willow tree. That was tricky, but well worth the effort it took to make them look like a breeze was blowing some of them towards the artist.

This time Humphrey returned her smile easily, pleased that he'd gotten such a response. "You're welcome," he responded, following her glance and seeing the child it had been based on. "When did you start drawing?" he asked, because he was genuinely interested in the subject himself. He didn't have much experience, but he thought it was really cool and would love to talk with somebody who also enjoyed it.
