The explanation of the lesson they would be participating in sounded interesting to Nikolai. He'd never reverse engineered a potion before, the idea had never occured to him as a possibility, either. So the fact they were going to be doing this was by far the best thing Professor Harrington had come up with this year.

Except the fact they would have to pair up.

Mimosa was already heading off to collect 'her' vial of potion, denoting Nikolai get everything ready. The boy didn't have any chance to argue. Mimosa had already collected their potion - a vile looking multi-coloured potion - and bounced back to their station.

"This one is the prettiest!" Was the only explanation the boy was given as she set it down on their desk.

Nikolai's eyes continued to look over the potion, not reaching out to touch it as he tried to think of a potion that had these qualities. Nothing came to mind straight away, which meant they were going to have to work quickly to try to identify the potion. Nikolai didn't ask Mimosa if she knew what it was, already knowing the younger Slytherin would be little to no help on this matter.

The boy was about to pick the vial up when Mimosa moved to collect it, unstoppering the top to bring out a flurry of bubbles in the similar multi-coloured manner the potion held. Mimosa's reaction was one that Nikolai would have expected with a soft giggle and a short marvelling at the bubbles that was childish to say the least.

And then the witch started off on one of her usual tirades.

Nikolai was no longer listening at this point, instead taking back the vial from the witch and putting it in a holder as he examined it. It was colourful and it emitted a stream of colourful bubbles at random intervals...

"Could it be..." Mimosa started her list, randomly chosen potions that definitely did not look anything like this. Nikolai responded in the negative to each potion with an explanation why it wasn't. Usually based on the colour the potion she'd named actually was. Mimosa would let out a soft 'oh' and for a moment there would be silent and then it would repeat as Nikolai tried to concentrate.

It continued for five minutes before Mimosa grew bored.

The witch then took his book from him and started turning pages, stopping every couple of pages and asking him if it was "that potion"? Far be it for Mimosa to actually read the name and therefore insist Nikolai look over and tell her no.

Fifteen minutes passed.

Twenty minutes.

By thirty minutes Nikolai hadn't deduced an answer.

"This is boring." Mimosa insisted as she closed the book, looking to Nikolai expectantly to come up with an answer on the potion in that instant as if he hadn't been trying his best this whole time.

"We're getting there," Nikolai tried, but Mimosa had already swiped the potion and brought it to her lips, draining the bottle clean. Nikolai's eyes widened in that moment as he waited for something to happen.

But... Nothing happened...

"Do you feel okay..?"

Mimosa just looked back at him, and then over herself. Nothing had happened, and now their potion was gone. Except there was... A bit of a glow about her? Nikolai's eyes moved over the witch's features, taking them in properly and for the first time... The boy realised how perfectly symmetrical her features were, and how her eyes were a shade of blue he'd never really appreciated...

Pulling his eyes away from Mimosa, which was much more difficult than it usually was, Nikolai raised his hand to get Professor Harrington's attention.

"Umm, Professor, Mimosa drank our potion and... Nothing happened." He admitted, cheeks a little red because he didn't like admitting they couldn't complete their work.

Over the next thirty minutes, Azalea moved through the groups, helping where she could, avoiding potential disasters when she saw any. Some students were more adept than others, already getting out their distillation devices and thermometers to verify boiling and cooling points or ingredient make up. Others had gone the old school method of looking into their textbook for similar potions. Dominique and Jia En were having a particular difficult time with their own brew, making Azalea stop at their station for almost ten minutes as she tried to explain how to isolate ingredients to identify what they made up.

Nikolai's raised hand caught her attention and pleasantly surprised, the witch turned to him and Mimosa. If they were done, then they were remarkably quick about it. instead the boy sounded concerned as he pointed out his partner had ingested their potion, to no effect. The brunette wasn't entirely worried, she had seen Mimosa pick up the multicolored potion "because it was the prettiest" but Nikolai's observation gave her pause.

Making her way to their station, she surreptitiously noted that he was right. The potion was supposed to make the drinker beautiful, and on any given day, Azalea would have sworn that her daughter was the most beautiful person in the world anyway. But here... A grin lit up her face as she approached. Here was absolute proof. For besides the faint glow about Mimosa's features, nothing had changed about the girl. No differently shaped nose, no bigger or smaller eyes, no lifted cheekbones. Mimosa looked almost exactly like she always did, making Azalea's heart swell with pride.

"I believe the potion Ms. Harrington has taken is a beautification one," she managed, controlling her proud smile but unable to dim the sparkle in her chocolate brown gaze. "Not that it seems to have made much of a difference, I suppose the potion couldn't realy find anything in Mimosa to improve upon."

"Well of course," Mimosa interjected, exuding all the confidence in the world. "A beautification potion won't have any effect on me, it would probably work better on Bushrah, or Lilac."

Light snorts and chuckles at the expense of the Hijabi girl who was no longer coming to classes erupted through the lab, only to be quietened by Azalea as she encouraged her students to focus on their work. The next hour was spend once again going around and helping where she could, salvaging what she could and being quietly proud of how perfect her daughter had turned out to be.

It was as she dismissed everyone for the day that Azalea realized... the only person she could share this with was Jake. Only he would understand and be just as proud. But the witch wasn't sure if that was an option right now. Alone in the empty converted lab, Azalea made her way to her own station, leaning against her stool, glad of the silence that engulfed her in the aftermath.
