Care of Magical Creatures - Lesson Two (All Years)

A note had been sent to each common room before Daniel's class to tell the students to wear their swimming attire beneath their robes. The rest was not explained. Whilst there was a layer of snow on the ground, Daniel had no reserves about going in to the lake with warming spells cast upon each student, together with a bubble head charm.

Many might give it a miss, he was sure, but Daniel was adamant about keeping Maximillian Hollingberry away from lurking in to the Forest. Though, of course, this may just focus the Gryffindor's attention on the lake. Daniel was stuck between a rock and a hard place with that boy, he was sure. But, he was trying.

Waiting for the students to come down to the lake, Daniel hoped the class would be a relatively good size, so that the Grindylows would grow confused over a target and make this lesson much easier for them all.

When Prim heard that they were to wear swimming costumes for their next COMC lesson she was ready to bail out and instantly say no to going. Not only was it winter but the water would be freezing cold and even though she knew that Professor Jameson would shoot warming charms at them she knew her knee wouldn't survive being in the cold water; at least it would be hard to swim for the girl but when she had seen Max's eager look on his face she had sighed and decided to brave the cold weather and even colder water.

She'd rather attend the lesson with Max then stay alone in the common room and receive a detention for not going. Bundling up in her robes after gingerly putting on the swimsuit, Prim made her way out to the Black Lake, her left knee bundled up in as many bandages as she could but she knew they would be useless when she got into the water.

"Hello Professor." She smiled at the Headmaster while looking around to see if her friend was anywhere near by.

Upon hearing that Care of Magical Creatures would require swimming wear, Max had narrowed the list of creatures they could be seeing down to a handful. And all of the options were very exciting! He'd dug his swimming shorts out days in advance for this, and that morning Max had been all too happy pulling them on.

The coldness of the day had not been a concern to the Gryffindor, either.

Hurrying down to the lesson, Max soon caught up with Prim, and the grin on is face showed the excitement that was bubbling inside of him. "Hey Prim! Any ideas yet?" He asked, motioning to the lake. "Morning professor!" Max added to Profesor Jameson, before opening his bag and pulling out his essay and handing it over. "I think you'll find my argument for Bowtruckles being pets quite a good one - after all, a pet doesn't necessarily have to live with you to be classed as one!" The boy explained, shooting Prim a knowing look.

Looking to the Lake, Max had to control his excitement with stepping from foot to foot, he was going to burst if this took too long!

Delilah was a bit of surprised when she read the note about wearing your swimming clothes for CoMC lesson. She didn't really expect such thing to happen in Christmas time basically. She still decided to go to the lesson and see what will happen there.

She did basically just in case did put her swimming suit on and under her robe. She walked where the lesson was held and sighed. She didn't really like this idea much someone to see her in so fewer clothes. She wasn't really someone who wanted much attention on her for sure. So she hoped this lesson will go by good.

She soon reached where they supposed to meet today. "Hello," she said. She really wasn't happy at all right now. She never was around Christmas times, it wasn't just a happy time for her and she couldn't pretend to be just fine when she wasn't. She just hoped someone won't say anything about it. She now waited what they will need to do in this lesson.

Lux had only raised an eyebrow when she'd read the professor's note. It didn't take a genius to figure out that they were going for a dip. Good luck to those who can't swim. Feeling bold, as usual, she'd chosen to wear her favourite swim wear - a blood red bikini. She wasn't one who was shy about her looks or body and didn't mind showing it off occasionally. One thing she didn't like was that her summer tan had worn off. Oh, well. She would get it back when winter passed.

She headed down to the lake, noting that there were already students present. As she neared, she recognised the annoying Gryffindor female and the Bowtruckle-obsessed Gryffindor male. She couldn't understand his excitement over the creatures. She couldn't understand excitement over this class, period. Most of the time she spent in Care of Magical Creatures was spent fantasizing ways and means to give the creatures a slow and painful death.

Arriving at the group, she took her place at the back, glancing around with a bored eyes.

As a number of students made it to class, Daniel smiled and greeted each of them. As Max handed over his essay, Daniel took a quick glance at it before putting it with his things. "I'm sure you'll have found a way." Daniel replied fondly to the Gryfindor as others arrived. Not quite so many as the first lesson, but that wasn't to matter.

Soon, the hour came, and Daniel decided to make a start so that they could get on with today's lesson.

"Good morning every one. I'm sure you're all excited to know what today is about, so without further ado, today we will be going down in to the lake to meet with the Grindylows. Now, someone other than Maximillian, who can tell me what a Grindylow is? Other than this lake, where can they be found? Do they have any uses? Key characteristics. Anything, to let everyone else know what they will be looking for."

Easily one of Humphrey's favorite classes was CoMC, and he loved reading through different books explaining about magical creatures. It was one of the few subjects he actually liked to study outside of school sometimes and would even get the occasional book that wasn't required but still incredibly interesting, at least to him. He was running a tad late on his way to class, but hurried over and managed to catch the professor explaining that they'd be working with Grindylows today and asked for any information on them. After thinking for a moment he remembered a few things and since nobody else had spoken up yet he decided to chime in.

"From what I remember Grindylows are a water demon with small horns, pale green skin, and yellow or white eyes. Also have really long fingers. I believe they're classified as a dark creature because even though it's not their standard diet they have been known to try and eat humans occasionally." Humphrey said, making sure to speak loud enough to be heard by everyone. He couldn't remember everything on the habitats of where they were commonly found.

As the professor started the class, Lux smirked. Maximillian was a world class know-it-all and probably the most annoying human being on the planet - besides Primrose who was equally as annoying. It was no wonder the both of them got along so well. Now he was shut up for this class and Lux couldn't be happier. Pesky little brat.

The professor began questioning the class and Lux was proud to be able to answer all of the questions. She let the Hufflepuff answer ahead of her and noted the questions he'd left unanswered, either because he didn't know the answers or he was letting the rest fill it in. "They're found all over Great Britain. And Ireland too. Usually at the bottom of lakes near weeds," she answered. "They're quite hostile but Merpeople have domesticated them. Some even make them their pets."

As the first student, Humphrey spoke up in the lesson, Daniel turned his attention to the boy and nodded along with the explanation that was given. "Yes, yes, very good Humphrey, well done! Five points for Hufflepuff." Daniel told the boy when he was finished, glad that he knew something about the Grindylows and was happy to share it with the class.

When the Head Girl, Lux, continued on with the explanation, Daniel turned his attention to the witch and once again listened, nodding in the right places to show that he was listening to the witch. "Yes, well done Lux, five points for Slytherin as well for your additional points." Daniel told her with a small smile before turning back to the group as a whole.

"As both Humphrey and Lux have pointed out, Grindylows can be quite hostile towards humans, however, as we will be going down in to the water as a group, you have no need to worry. Now, if you'd all please get ready to go in to the water - I trust you're all wearing your swimming clothes - and then line up before me, I will cast a warming charm, and then a bubblehead charm on each of you. Once that is done, please get in to the water, and start to swim down to the bottom. This is where we will find the Grindylows.

"Do not swim off from the group, whilst I am on good terms with the Merpeople, I do not wish to be haggling for your release." Daniel explained, before motioning for each of them to get moving.

Finally the time came to get into the lake after all the boring stuff was over. Lux was more than happy to strip off her robes. She'd never been self-conscious about her body and she wasn't about to start. Stepping up in her red bikini, she waited in line for the professor to charm her. Wading waist deep into the water, she crossed her arms impatiently until all the rest were done. Although she'd wanted to go ahead by herself, she knew that she had to obey the rules if she didn't want to get in trouble.

Once they were given the go-ahead, Lux dived into lake, relishing the feel of being surrounded by water. A few powerful kicks and she was off, heading deeper and deeper. She was a strong swimmer but was smart enough to stay keep her pace with the rest of the group though she wanted to go full speed. It took longer than she would have liked but she eventually reached the bottom and caught sight of the Grindylows there. She'd seen pictures of them and knew what to expect but seeing them live was so much more interesting. They were her kind of creatures - dark, hostile, evil-looking.
