The sun shone down on the school grounds as Mackenzie awaited the arrival of her students. Her students. even just the idea of students gathering to hear her speak was something phantasmagorical. And at Hogwarts, nonetheless. Not even a year prior, she had been a journalist for the Daily Prophet who would spend hours of her days researching different ways to call out Hogwarts for one thing or another.

But now she was a part of the elite society that she had once gossiped about. Mackenzie wondered if one day a young girl would write about her in a dark light. The thought made her shudder. This work was more worthwhile. She was sure of it.

Of course, she had been quite surprised when it had been announced to her that she'd be the one to take Daniel Jameson's place as Care of Magical Creatures professor. She was sure that there had to have been an applicant or two who were much more experienced than she, yet somehow they had gone unnoticed. She took it as a sign. She was meant to be in this place, teaching these young wizards.

Before Mackenzie stood a small branch. At first glance, it appeared to be nothing special; a simple piece of wood lying amongst the other pieces of wood in nature. But it was more than a simple branch. Someone who paid close attention to the branch would notice that small bits of green seemed to live there, moving ever so slightly. The creatures looked to be leaves, but Mackenzie knew them to be far more than that.

The witch smiled warmly, waiting to introduce herself, as well as her lesson plan, to her students for the first time ever.

When Sophie heard that they were going to have a new professor for her favourite class, she hadn't been really thrilled. She'd liked Professor Jameson; he knew his stuff and Sophie could trust him to teach well. Care of Magical Creatures was the class she most enjoyed and the one she excelled in besides Herbology. She would make sure that the new professor knew what he or she was doing. If not, there would be hell to pay. Sophie could guarantee that.

On the bright side, Christmas was around the corner and Sophie couldn't wait to get back home. There was a tounament coming up and Sophie wanted that blue ribbon. She'd prepared a few stunts, but to really score more points, she'd have to add more to her routine.

As she neared the area where they usually had the class, Sophie saw that she was the first to arrive save for one other person. At the distance, she assumed it was another student until she got closer and realised she'd been wrong. "Oh, you're a woman," she said in surprise. "I wasn't expecting that." She didn't mean to be rude at all, but she had been expecting a male professor because almost all their other professors were men.

Julienne felt the grass cave under her feet, regenerating its volume as her feet lifted and crunching once again as she set them back down on her way to Care of Magical Creatures. She didn't mind Care of Magical Creatures class, so long as the animal they studied did not require handling. She remembered one class in which she studied crups, perhaps her first or second year at Hogwarts. The creatures were adorable, but Julienne found their energy frightening and overwhelming. She'd almost dropped the crup she was holding.

But hopefully, this class wouldn't be as hands on. She'd heard something about a new professor. She'd gotten so used to Headmaster Jameson. What if this teacher wasn't as forgiving of silence as the other had been. What if she forced participation? What if she called students out at random?

Julienne began to panic. She kept her head down as she reached the area where the class was gathering. She hoped that this new professor was kind. She didn't know what she would do if the lesson forced her out of her comfort zone.

If there was one thing Stephanie didn't like, it was being out of doors. She never understood how people enjoyed it. For one thing there were the insects and annoying bugs that she absolutely abhorred. But it wasn't even that that made her go insane. It was the dirt and the fact that it somehow always seemed to be everywhere and she hated it. The only thing that made it more tolerable was the it wasn't her personal clothes that got dirty; it was the school robes. If she had to wear her own clothes to Care of Magical Creatures, she'd probably just skip the class altogether instead of risking them getting icky.

As she neared the class, she saw a couple of other students there along with their new professor. She didn't understand why Professor Jameson stopped teaching, but there was nothing she could do about that, unfortunately. As she stood near the back of the group and eyed the professor, sizing her up, Stephanie hoped to Merlin that they wouldn't be doing anything dirty today.

Upon hearing that Professor Jameson had given up his role of Care of Magical Creatures professor to concentrate on the Headmaster role, Elenore had to raise an eyebrow at his decision. Why would the man give up something he was so passionate about? It simply didn't make any sense to the young witch, so, she had naturally done the most obvious thing in the world.

She'd written home to ask why.

Her father had not yet come back with an answer, much to Elenore's dismay, so she did the second best thing she could think of. She went off to the lesson to get a feel for the new professor. The rumours going around was that their new professor was female which Elenore wasn't sure how to process, so used to male professors being the majority, it was going to be a change that would take time to process.

Upon arriving to the class, Elenore found this to be true. "Good morning, professor." The witch greeted her professor, her French accent quite clear -- Elenore enjoyed playing with the professors, and she wanted to put something of a little bit of difference in to the day. Trivial though her accent might be.

Now, she could only wait for the class to begin.

Clara stood toward the back of the gathering crowd. She did not particularly like this class--she was not good with living things, though she was slightly better with animals than with plants. Animals could normally take care of themselves for the most part, unlike gardens. Still, living things required a certain intuition that she did not possess. They were not logical, and aside from cats, most dogs, and some birds, she wasn't really a fan. She wouldn't eat them--she would never eat anything with a brain and/or a nervous system--but she preferred not to interact with them in any other way either.

The new teacher was a young woman. That was all Clara could glean just from looking at her, and it was her policy to withhold any and all judgement until a person spoke, lest she accidentally form an unfounded bias. As such, she turned her attention away from the professor for the time being, and instead stared at the tree branch that the woman had placed in front of her. Bowtruckles, maybe? Clara thought, though she didn't have a very clear view. She couldn't see any movement from where she stood, but she figured there must be a creature in there somewhere.

Max had practically ran down to Care of Magical Creatures. They had a new professor, which was very, very exciting. He was going to make sure the professor knew he liked animals, hopefully get in to their good books, and learn as much as possible from them so that he could hopefully -- somehow -- get in to university to study Magizoology.

Not that Max had put a lot of thought in to all of this, of course.

Skidding to a stop in the clearing, Max gave the professor a large, warm smile and looked around for an idea as to what they would be doing today. "Good morning, professor. I'm Max." The Gryffindor said, enthusiasm oozing out of him as he took in their surroundings. No clear sign of any animals yet...

Then his eyes fell upon the tree just behind the professor, though it wasn't a tree attached to anything. It took only a couple more brief moments before he noticed the small leaf like creatures. "Bowtruckles." He mused out loud, moving closer to the tree to get a better look. He wondered if this was Buckle's colony, or whether the professor -- being new -- didn't know about the infestation in the forest already here.

Whatever the case, Max hoped she hadn't disturbed this specimen too much.

Mackenzie was impressed by the number of students who had gathered for her lesson. In the long run, she knew that quality was always more valuable than quantity. But it was nice to know that more than a few students were interested in any knowledge that she could lend them. She especially loved how warm most students seemed to be; smiling hellos in her direction as they took their places. She enjoyed the connection that she seemed to be making.

The first student to really catch her attention, though, was a young student with long brown hair and a puzzled look in her eyes. She seemed surprised that the new professor was female; as if Daniel being male had made it so that Care of Magical Creatures could only be taught by men.

Mackenzie laughed lightly. "I have often been told that I exceed expectations, Sophie." She hoped that the student would appreciate that she'd taken the time to research the names of each student. Mackenzie felt as though there would be a stronger connection if they knew each other's names.

She watched as a few more students joined the class. One student greeted her with a thick accent, more than likely of some sort of French origin.
"Bonjour, Elenore," she smiled.

After Elenore came a bubbly young male. He introduced himself as Max before deciphering the day's lesson.

Mackenzie nodded.

"Nice to meet you, Max," She smiled.

"Hello! I'm Mackenzie Faucette, but I would prefer it if you'd all call me by Mackenzie. As excited as I am to be a professor, I do not believe I am willing to go by "Professor Faucette." Seems too formal, no?

Anyways, as some of you have guessed, today's lesson will be on Bowtruckles! Interesting creatures, Bowtruckles. Would anyone like to offer the class some knowledge on this creatures? I believe 5 house points per response seems fair."

Of course, she could have lectured the class on the history of Bowtruckles, but that did not seem near as fun.

The confirmation -- not that Max needed it -- that they were studying Bowtruckles made the Gryffindor grin at the professor so happily. They were one of his favourite creatures, ones he knew and understood so much so he'd managed to befriend one. Not that he was going to tell the professor that, he had a sneaking suspicion that she might want to find his small gathering of the creatures and use them for her own purposes.

"Bowtruckles live in trees, as shown by the stump in front of us. They blend in because they look like sticks, or leaves, and therefore are quite difficult to spot unless you know what you're looking for." Max explained, his words coming out quite fast because this was his forte, this was something he knew inside out. "They're quite small, most don't outgrow eight inches, though, of course, there are always anomalies to that rule.

"They live in England, Germany and Scandanavia, I believe.." Max continued, before remembering the main point. "They're only dangerous if you try to harm their home. Their trees. So, as long as you respect them, you won't ever come to any harm around Bowtruckles. Most, from experience, are actually quite loving."

Finishing his answer with a fond smile, the Gryffindor waited to move on in the lesson.
