DADA: Lesson Three (All Years) Empty
PostSubject: DADA: Lesson Three (All Years)   DADA: Lesson Three (All Years) EmptyWed Mar 08, 2017 7:12 pm

Jake was ready for the summer - as he was sure a number of his students were too. It would allow him more time in the day to spend with his family, and to get away from the school for a month or two and recover from the horrors of the Deadly Nightshade attack and the toll it had taken on the school. Jake had not been on duty that day - instead he'd been with his wife and children.

And, he had felt so very, very guilt.

Veronika had tried to assure him that it was okay, but some of their students had died... He could have, possibly, done something to make it not happen that way. But it had happened, and Jake could not change the past.

So, instead, he'd come up with a more practical lesson. The Full Body-Bind Curse the board read, for those who looked up when they entered, they would know in an instant what they would be covering. It was only a second year spell, Jake was very aware. But if the older years could already do this they could perfect it. Or, Jake could create a dueling scenario, so that they tested their abilities more. He was flexible, he just hoped the kids were too.

As usual, Jake sat atop his desk, a desk that sat before an empty room, because he'd always been a practical teacher.

PostSubject: Re: DADA: Lesson Three (All Years)   DADA: Lesson Three (All Years) EmptyThu Mar 09, 2017 3:28 pm

DADA had always been Prim's favourite lesson, not counting Potion's, but the reason why she did like it was because Jake always managed to make the lessons fun even if at times people complained about his style of teaching. It made the hour pass by quick and it didn't bore people to death, no matter how much they wanted to complain about them.

As was usual, Prim tugged Max with her to DADA, she had no plans on being alone in that lesson no matter how much she liked Jake as a Professor, a soft hum and a small smile on her lips; she noted with amusement that many people shot her bewildered looks as she dragged Max behind her, many people probably wondering how a small girl like her could drag a guy like Max without even breaking a sweat.

Pushing the door to the classroom open, Prim beamed at Jake and waved her hand, skipping over to her usual place in the room. "Hey Jake!" The chirpy girl said as she hummed, placing her book bag down near the walls of the class so that it didn't get in the way.

The last Defense Against the Dark Arts class hadn't gone so well, what with the boggart and Aunt Sally and... Serenity held back a shudder. The tears had been unnecessary, as tears usually were, and she hated herself for having given in so easily to sadness. No, she knew she was stronger than that -- raised to be stronger than that -- and so, with her head held high, she promised herself that no matter what happened today in class, she would not cry.

Tammie right beside her as usual, she entered class, sticking to the walls as usual. With a murmur of greeting to the Professor, she glanced at the words on the board. Full Body-Bind Curse she thought, mulling over the words and trying to recall the spell.

Tracing the wand pattern with her finger, movements subtle and hidden behind her back, she murmured, "Petrificus totalus," trying to get the pronunciations right. Once satisfied she was correct, she relaxed a little more. It wasn't going to be too hard a class, from the looks of it.

Amber hated DADA. It wasn't that the Professor wasn't nice -- he was one of her favourites -- or that the disliked the subject in itself. It was simply the fact that magic and anything that had to do with verbal queues were simply not something she could do well, if at all. She had to focus solely on non-verbal magic, which, for her age, was verging on impossible.

With a sigh to herself, she stepped into the classroom, noting with a sinking feeling in her chest that the class was empty. On the rare occasion that there were chairs, she knew that it was more of a theoretical lesson, and she could relax. But, those days were rare, and Amber stood off at the side as her eyes took in the words on the board.

A simple spell that she should, by right, know. But a hard one to do without the words. Signing a simple hello to the professor with as genuine a smile as she could manage, Amber waited for Elleon to arrive; he'd understand how she felt.

Elleon more his way to DADA, dragging his feet and sighing. He didn't particularly like DADA - he never did - mostly because he was usually behind on the practical aspects of it. He knew the theory well enough and could probably tell you the use, incantation and -sometimes - even the history of it. Having to repeat the year helped a little in the sense that he already knew some of what they were doing, but he still struggled with it. His sister had less and less time to go through the pronunciations with him, leaving him to try and guess which part of the word he got wrong and how to correct it.

Thank Merlin for Amber. At least he wasn't alone in this.

Entering the classroom, he gave the professor a wave and read what was on the board. Petrificus totalus he thought to himself, seeing the words clearly in his mind. Now he just had to pronounce it properly - or try and do it non-verbally. His non-verbal spells had improved quite a bit since the previous year, but he wasn't sure if he was good enough for this. There was only one way to find out.

Spotting his best friend, Elleon made his way to her, greeting her with a bright smile. "Amber, hey! How've you been?"

Another mixed class brought forth another groan from Corbin as he headed up the stairs from his common room to the third floor. It was rather annoying to be stuck with the younger ones learning basic things that he'd long since mastered. Still, if they had split into upper and lower, that meant Naomi would be there. And she, quite honestly, was fun.

Stepping into class, he took in the words on the board with a hidden roll of the eyes; the spell was so basic, so easy, that it almost wasn't worth his time attending. But the last thing he needed or wanted was a detention, lest it fall on the day of a party and he had to cancel the whole thing. That and the fact that it would be an opportunity to show the younger ones how things were really done.

"Professor," he greeted, moving to the front of the class and waiting for it to start.

The moment Lux's eyes landed on the board and saw what was written there, she groaned. She'd been hoping for something more...exciting, something more dangerous and damaging too. The Full Body-Bind Curse was one she'd already perfected. At first, she considered just marching out of there, but her desire to graduate was far greater than the threat of boredom.

Shooting a dirty are-you-serious look at the professor, Lux walked to the back of the classroom where she crossed her arms and waited for the class to start. Her only hope now was that Jake would allow them to use the spell on each other instead of just dummies. Her eyes wandered to the two deaf kids and a plan formulated in her mind. She'd seen them talking with their hands. If she were to use the curse on them...it would just be like shutting people up. They wouldn't be able to move their hands and therefore, wouldn't be able to communicate at all. That could be fun. It would, of course, be more fun if there wasn't a counter-curse for it, but one couldn't always have their way all the time. Unfortunately.

As Roxy stepped into the classroom, her eyes instantly fell onto the board and she groaned, cursing in German before her eyes roved over the students only for them to light up when she saw Serenity; the young girl had impressed Roxanne and the third year had taken an instant liking to the first year so without even thinking about it she made her way over to where the Seer was, a small smile on her lips.

"Hey Serenity." She said with a soft smile upon her lips before she turned back to the class. "Hi Jake!" At first Roxy had been weary of using a Professor's first name but well the man had been adamant about it so she couldn't refuse him.

As she stood in the class, she thought on how their lesson was going to go; there were many people there who already knew that curse, herself included, but there were also quite a few firsties who had no idea so it could go either way. Sighing, she just decided to wait on what would happen.

Skipping into class, Eleonora took in the lack of desks and let out a happy squeal; that meant they were going to do something practical. Sure, most of the time this was the case, but it still filled her with joy each time. It meant she didn't need to sit down for long periods of time and try and focus on someone talking for what felt like days on end. It also meant she got to practise magic, and what witch didn't enjoy casting spells?

Making her way to the front of the class, she grinned at the professor.

"Hello Pro-" she started, then frowned and stopped herself. She'd been corrected enough times by now to recall that the Professor didn't like being called that. "I mean Jake." She paused, smile returning. "I remembered all on my own! Isnt that great? Maybe next time I won't even have the 'pro' part. We're doing the full-body-bind curse? Isn't that the petrificus totalus one? Oh! I remembered it, yay! I sometimes forget spells..."

Trailing off, she shrugged, almost to herself, and stopped talking, practically bouncing on her feet as she waited for the lesson to start.

Defence Against the Dark Arts was one of the few classes that Naomi got a little bit of a kick out of. For one, the professor was very easy on the eye - the fact he was a dad hadn't changed Naomi's opinion, either. And, on top of all of that, the class was normally always a practical one. You couldn't not like a practical lesson - surely!

Slipping through the door, Naomi's eyes met Corbin's first, and her jaw set a little bit. This was all she needed, that wretched boy in lessons! "Henderson." She greeted, moving to stand by his side. She was not going to be so petty as to stand on the other side of the room, or something, she was bigger than that.

"Morning Jake." She added to the professor, setting her bag down against the wall and waiting for him to make a start on the lesson. Her eyes landed on the spell, and she had to try to contain a smile. Naomi already knew who she'd be partnering.
