Wesley had been quiet throughout the time the professor had explained as to what they would be doing today. He wasn't sure he'd heard of a Snargaluff before, and therefore didn't really know what to expect. Perhaps it was the change in language... that was not always something that was easy to work with when you were changing the names of things from one language to another.

And, Wesley was right, after listening to a red girl (a Gryffindor, Wesley corrected in his head) give the answer he realised the translation in his head and nodded to himself in understanding.

The Ravenclaw almost died of having bad luck when he found that the professor wanted them to pair up with others. He hated working with other people for the sheer fact that he was likely going to have to talk to them. He didn't do very well in social situations, especially not in this school, but he didn't have much choice...

So, stepping forward just after the Gryffindor did, Wesley took up her instructions - this was a truly embarrassing situation being outsmarted by a younger witch. Without a word, Wesley took out his wand just in case it was necessary, and moved forth. The Snargaluff didn't look like it wanted to do anything much, really... Until Wesley moved his hand towards the vine and they quickly made a beeline to grab him.

Wesley's hand retracted just in time, and the Ravenclaw gave the Gryffindor a sheepish smile. He liked plants, but more the non-magical kind. "We could sever the vines." Wesley offered, keeping the conversation short because he hated the sound of the Bulgarian accent in this castle.

After her suggestion, Sophie waited in anticipation of her fellow students' reaction. She wasn't afraid of them or what they would think of her, but she wanted her plan to work and she needed their cooperation for that. When a Ravenclaw boy stepped up, she grinned and positioned herself opposite him. The vines would go for him, leaving her free to grab the pod.

She waited for him to move and once she saw the Snargaluff going for him, she reached for the pod...only for the boy to back away. With the Snargaluff's attention off the boy, the plant shot out its branches toward her. On instinct, Sophie pulled her hand away, quick enough that the plant couldn't get a grip on her but still leaving a few scratches across the length of her forearm.

Ignoring it because the pain wasn't a big issue, she turned her eyes to the boy. "What was that?" she asked, displeasure evident in her tone as she stretched out her hands, palm up. "You just had to keep it distracted." Boys were such idiots. Seriously.

"No, no wait," Sophie interjected at his suggestion. Cutting the plant up was the last thing she wanted to do. But his words gave her another idea. "Instead of cutting the vines, I'm going to cut the pod. Cut it off the vine, I mean."

Aiming her wand at the nearest pod she could see, Sophie said, "Diffindo!" The fruit separated neatly from the vine but landed in the tangle of branches. "Great wild mustangs," Sophie muttered under her breath. Oh, I know! She'd heared of the summoning charm but had not been taught the incantation or the wand movement for it. She would have to ask one of the others to do it. She was rather reluctant, but there was no other choice.

"Right, now you can summon it out," she said, pointing to the pod.

Arthur had stood back as the Gryffindor witch and a Ravenclaw had stepped forward, quite obviously not overly interested in getting highly involved. Especially when the spunky little Gryffindor started giving off orders as if she was in charge. Not that Arthur wanted to be in charge himself, but she was the youngest in the room for Merlin's sake!

Though, at least they'd have had a strategy before the other two had begun work, had Arthur been in charge. Still, as the two got themselves in to something of a mess with trying to go at the plant without any confidence, Arthur was glad he'd stayed back.

As the Gryffindor cut the pod out, Arthur could see the Ravenclaw was not much up for trying to get it himself. So, drawing his wand, the Slytherin summoned the pod from the Snargaluff, catching it somewhat haphazardly, before smiling at the other two, softly.

"Not so hard, really." He mused, holding the pod out towards the professor as he didn't want to hold on to it too long. Not if the pods were so prized and therefore quite valuable to others. No, damaged goods would not be sold for a good prize.

Caspar had been quite happy to let the kids have a go, and it had worked, too. With the young Gryffindor witch, Sophie, taking the control of the group, he was quite proud of her for taking up the initiative in that moment, and work through it logically.

For a few moments, Caspar had been worried that his plants were going to be butchered by the children - not that he would allow it, but they had spoken of it - but once again, Sophie knew what she was doing. Trying not to smile too much at her mannerisms, Caspar let them finish, and when finally he was presented with a pod, without the need of mutilation of his plants, he motioned the students away from the plant.

"Well done, all of you, for collecting the pod. As you will have seen, this is not an easy task by any stretch of the imagination, and I congratulate you for your work. I trust you can now see that mutilating plants is not always the best way to deal with them." Caspar explained, looking towards Wesley in that moment in the hope of getting the point across to the Bulgarian boy.

"Now, homework is to write up the information I have taught you in today's lesson, but also to look up our next topic. Fanged Geraniums." Caspar explained, before smiling warmly at the students. "You may go!" He added, waving them all off.

End of Lesson.
