| Hello Class, I hope you all enjoyed your time away from school. My name is Andrei Kessler and I will be your new ancient runes professor for this term. Now, you're probably wondering why I am not telling you this in person and why you cannot get into my classroom. So, allow me to dash your hopes right off the bat: yes we are having class today. In fact, your first lesson is starting right now and right here, find a way into my classroom. Best of luck, Andrei Kessler
Andrei tacked this note onto the door that normally led to his classroom. However, instead of a door, it appeared that the door had melted into the wall around it. The knob was gone, the seams on all four sides of the door no longer existed, and it looked as if a panel of dark worn wood was embedded into the stone. Today's lesson would be a practical one. This trick was one that Andrei and many others in his field encountered on even the earliest of Egyptian digs when trying to gain access to burial chambers. The ancients inscribed runes on a door using a particular formula, not unlike saying an incantation, thereby achieving a certain magical effect. Often times decoding such formulas resulted in triggering some kind of life-threatening trap. The one Andrei's more advanced students would face today, however, would not trigger any such trap. He didn't want to kill them just yet. The runes inscribed on the door itself would not be visible at first and would require a spell to reveal them to the naked eye. Next, they would have to decipher the runic formula and answer the question at the end. The question asked each student present to inscribe their name in runic text onto the door itself. Certainly, there was no 1:1 translation of names, but one could approximate a name reasonably well. Once all this was completed the door would return to its normal state allowing them to enter. This lesson would require knowledge, quick thinking, and teamwork. Andrei, sitting at his desk within the classroom itself, hoped that his new students were up to the task—today would be a bad day to forget one's textbook. In theory, these students would be more advanced and knew how to use their resources. That said, he did take precautions should the students become too resourceful. At the bottom of the initial note in the same thin slanting cursive as the rest, he'd scribbled a postscript: P.S. Please use your heads, not your wands; we don't need any permanent damage done to the castle. The last thing he needed was some overzealous student blasting down the door. That would be a poor way to start out the term for all involved. [Hey! This will be pretty damn free form, so have fun with it and interact with your fellow rpers to complete this lesson.] |

| Clara approached the door to the Ancient Runes classroom, noticing no one else in the hallway. She enjoyed Ancient Runes very much--translating them was like decoding ciphers, which in turn were like puzzles. You just looked for patterns, and if you found enough of them, it would start to make sense. The joy of figuring things out was one her favourite experiences, and it made this a fun subject for her.
She stopped in her tracks where the door should have been. Instead there was a solid wooden panel, and a note, which she read. A spark of something like excitement flared in her chest. A puzzle. Brilliant.
Seeing she must be the first one there, she got to work as quickly as she could. She would rather figure it out by herself, for several reasons. One, it was more satisfying that way, not having to rely on help from others. Two, she hated working with other people--they were always so noisy and it made it hard to think. And three, though she was loathe to admit it, she was scared someone would figure it out before her. When it came to her peers, the thought that someone might be smarter than her made her feel...angry? Jealous? She wasn't sure, but it was a bad feeling and she didn't like it.
Studying the wood for clues, she saw nothing. She ran her hand over it, especially where the wood met the stone of the wall, to see if there were any irregularities. Nothing, it was smooth. She took a step back.
Taking out her wand, she tried a revelio on the surrounding area, but turned up empty-handed once again. She turned back to the door. It was Ancient Runes, obviously the puzzle would have something to do with that. She'd need to search for a hidden message, probably.
She tapped her wand on the door. "Aparecium," she muttered. Slowly, writing started to appear across the wood. A series of lines and shapes that made no sense by themselves were etched into the door. She smiled.
Reaching into her bag, she took out her textbook, a notebook, and a pencil. She quickly but carefully copied down the runes, then sat cross-legged against the wall and began flipping through her book. |

| Maximillian Hollingberry was amongst the worst students to have in your class, unless it revolved around magical (or, non-magical) creatures. His attention span had never been very good with things outside of these parameters, which made most classes difficult to concentrate on. That said, Max did, at least, try. Or, rather, his girlfriend had threatened him so much, that he had no choice but to attend the lessons he'd signed up for.
Heading up to the Sixth Floor, Max had missed the presence of another person sat in the hallway, and -- considering his mind was elsewhere -- simply pushed in to the door with enough force to bounce straight back off. Shoulder sore, the Gryffindor boy frowned his concentration focusing on the door before him to find it...
Not looking like a door.
Quickly, the Gryffindor checked his watch, only to find himself neither late, nor too early. "Odd..." The Prefect muttered to himself, taking a step back and considering the door for a few moments. The note he read carefully, but a frown touched his features. It didn't much help Max, truthfully.
Looking up and down the hallway, Max's eyes landed on the girl sat with her book, and turned towards her. "You wouldn't happen to be any good at Runes, would you? Must say I'm not great at this lesson." Max said with a sheepish grin, it was the truth, though, and Max had no qualms in admitting when he wasn't good at something. |

| Clara jumped when she heard a sudden thud. Her head jerked up, and she looked rather incredulously at the older boy standing in the hall. Had he just run into the door?
Her pencil hovered over her notebook as she paused to regard the newcomer with some trepidation. So it began. She hope he wasn't the first in a flood of students. She could probably deal with one or two, but a crowd would be too much.
The boy finally noticed her, and his words eased some of her discomfort. He wouldn't bother her, as long as he stayed relatively quiet. He wasn't a threat to her competitive side. She nodded at the boy's question.
"I'm working on it. Just try not to distract me, I should be able to figure it out soon enough. I think I've got at least a few words, though one of them is rather ambiguous. This symbol is definitely an 'ah' sound." |

| Ancient Runes, a subject that Primrose Seele was proud to say was the best one she was in; her mind was made for the archaic language that the Runes were and she easily scored an O on the OWLs the year before, making her feel smug all over. That was one subject that she was not going to fail, no matter how much people would've loved to see her do so.
Making her way down to the sixth floor from the Gryffindor Common Room, Prim blinked her eyes when she saw Max there, along with some Ravenclaw female that Prim had seen around but never took notice off, they didn't travel in the same social circles after all.
"Max?" She looked at her boyfriend with an arched brow, clearly wondering what the other was doing here. She didn't really expect Max to take Ancient Runes, much less in Sixth Year where everyone knew they would get harder by the lesson.
Making her way towards the door, or what was supposed to have been a door, Prim noticed the note pinned to it and read through it fairly quickly, her eyes narrowed in contemplation before she turned around to stroll towards Max and the Ravenclaw Witch.
Having heard the last of her sentence, Prim crouched beside the Ravenclaw, quickly scanning her notes before turning back towards the door where she could still see the outline of the runes, the spell that the girl used only just fading out. This would be rather hard but then again this was Ancient Runes, not to mention the Professor hadn't said which set of Runes he used so she should assume that it could be all of them or just one.
Pulling her bag forward, Prim dug through it, pulling out the countless of Rune books that she had in there, flipping through them all one by one.
"Could it be one of these?" Prim questioned as she kept the books open on three different pages from three different Runic alphabets.
"These all have the 'ah' sound." She slowly mused out loud. "We'll just need to see which one will work better in the equation." She nodded her head towards the book that the witch had. |

| Ancient Runes was a subject that Elleon liked. Being very artistic, he didn't find it difficult at all to remember and recognise all the various symbols. It also helped that it was a theoretical subject, like Potions. He didn't have to spend hours working on pronouncing incantations and there was no physical activity that would tire him out. The numbers were the easiest to remember as they were all associated with a creature of some sort. There were others they'd learned, of course, but it didn't take long for Elleon to have them down pat.
He headed up the stairs to the sixth floor to see a small crowd gathered outside the room. Was the door locked? Did the professor forget that they had class? What was everyone doing outside? Nearing the group of people, he spotted the note on the door which answered all of his questions. His first thought was respect for the professor for having found a way to make a highly theoretical class fun and interesting. His next thought was how to solve it.
One glance around told him that the students were already working on it. Seeing that a Ravenclaw girl, Clara, if he remembered correctly, had copied down the runes, he sat down next to her after giving Max and Prim a wave and smile of greeting. From the pages that were opened in their textbooks, he figured out which of the symbols they were working on. He left those to the two girls and instead worked on the other symbols.
He recognised a few easily and, taking out a notebook and pen, he copied the symbols, the artist in him replicating it well. Underneath it, he wrote: name. He showed it to Clara and Primrose, pointing to the symbols Clara had copied into the notebook, then to the word he'd written in his. He made eye contact with them to ensure that they understood what he was trying to say. Then he moved on to the next few symbols, writing down the ones he knew and leaving blank spaces for the ones he didn't. All he needed were a few letters and he could form the word. It was faster that way than searching up each symbol in a textbook. |

| As the Ravenclaw witch asked him not to disturb her, Max grew slightly conscious of his own movement. Wondering if he should sit down, or stay where he was, the Gryffindor was in two minds when his girlfriend appeared at the classroom and was looking at him increduously.
True... he hadn't told her he was taking Ancient Runes, but it wasn't so shocking that he'd turned up to a lesson... well, okay, maybe it was.
"Hey Prim!" Max replied, watching his girlfriend take up a seat next to the Ravenclaw witch and get cracking with the lesson. His eyes simply moved from one of them to the other, waiting for some kind of instructions on what to do. But, no instructions came...
Hearing footsteps, Max's head turned to see Elleon approaching and Max gave the boy a small wave, knowing his friend wouldn't hear any greeting. Once again, though, Elleon took a seat the other side of the Ravenclaw, and got on with the work.
Max stood awkwardly for a few more moments, before sitting down in front of the three, looking at each of them expectantly for either the answer, or something to do. He'd been asked no to distract, though, so Max did at least keep quite, his leg jigging slightly instead to keep him from just asking a million and one questions all at the same time. |

| Tick tock tick tock...
The large ornate clock that sat by the blackboard in Andrei's classroom patiently counted out each second that passed without fail. Reverberating around the still empty classroom the sound seemed to make the room feel all the emptier as the normal murmur of a class in session did not interrupt it.
Indeed, the only interruption came from a dull clunk of wood as if someone had run right into the wooden panel that had once been a door. Glancing up at the sound, Andrei let out a deep breath that he only then realized he'd been holding. The thud was the first indication that his students were trying something—he had worried that the students would just leave. However, by that same token, it did concern him slightly as solving the array of runes did not require anything that should produce such a thud.
Furrowing his brow he got halfway out of his seat with the intention of checking on the students, but thought better of it and sat back down. Hand holding wouldn't do them any good, he reasoned. Though part of him did worry that they might not figure out the puzzle in time and that would be bad on more than a few levels.
Opening one of the many books on his desk, Andrei did the only thing he could do at this point, wait.
Tick tock tick tock... |

| Clara was slightly annoyed when several more people showed up, but she had found herself at a bit of a standstill for the past minute or two, and, though she hated to admit it, she could use a little nudge. She knew she could figure it out by herself if given enough time, but, since speed was part of the goal, she figured it would be plainly illogical not to accept help.
When the deaf boy--Elleon--pointed out the symbol for "name," everything clicked. She could practically feel the cogs in her brain come unstuck, and she fervently flipped to the right page in her text book.
"It's this one," she said, pointing at the alphabet. And with that, she got to work decoding the rest of the message. It took her less than five minutes. She read it out when she was done, passing her notebook to Elleon so he could read it for himself.
"It says we have to write our names on the door using this alphabet," she gestured to the alphabet in the still open page of her textbook. "It's phonetic, so it'll be a rough translation."
Taking her wand, she muttered a charm that would allow her to inscribe a message into the wood, and glanced down at her textbook to make sure she had it right.
Kl-ah-ehr-uh, she sounded it out in her head, carving each corresponding symbol into the door. |

| The Gryffindor Prefect was ignored, even when everything had been put in to place. Max simply listened as it was explained what they had to do, before looking at the book and the symbols they would have to use. Max quickly moved to Prim's side, knowing that his borrowing of her book would not upset her in the slightest as he tried to work his own name out with phonetics.
Couldn't the professor just have asked them to spell it?
It took Max a few moments to work out his own name -- or, his nickname -- before he moved up to the door and wrote it like Clara did on the door with his wand. He only had to hope the professor wouldn't ask him to do his full name, because if that happened, they were all going to be here for a very long time.
Looking to the others to do the same, Max waited quietly, still eager to see how this was going to go. |
