Intermediate Ancient Runes Lesson 1 [4th years+] - Page 2 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Intermediate Ancient Runes Lesson 1 [4th years+]   Intermediate Ancient Runes Lesson 1 [4th years+] - Page 2 EmptyThu Sep 28, 2017 10:12 am

Right after he'd pointed out the set of symbols to Clara, Elleon got to work on another set and had just figured out it meant 'write' when Clara passed her notebook to him. He didn't fully catch what she'd said, but from what was written in the notebook and the open page of her textbook, he knew what he had to do and he hated it.

For someone who was Deaf, phonetics wasn't easy. How'd he know what his name sounded like? Much less how the runic alphabets sounded? Of course, he'd learned phonetics as a child; his parents made sure of that. That didn't mean he knew exactly how his name sounded or how that would translate to runic text. A direct translation of one symbol for each letter in the alphabet would've been so much easier. Then again, school wasn't meant to be easy.

He watched as Clara and then Max wrote their names on the door. He'd have to try his best. After casting a non-verbal charm, he put the tip of his wand to the door and began writing, mouthing out his name as he went and doing his utmost to match it to the runic symbols, and quite sure he'd gotten a few syllables wrong. He took a step back after he was done, waiting to see what would happen.

Prim easily shifted the book so that both she and Max could read from it and just as Clara revealed what was the answer to the riddle, she had just as quickly found the answer herself though the Ravenclaw was clearly the quicker of the two to say it out loud.

Despite the fact that she had clearly been beaten out, Prim couldn't help the slightly amused smile as she moved towards the supposed doorway and with her wand slowly wrote out the phonetics that spelt her name, mouthing them at the same time as her wand went through the motions of the runes.

Thankfully, her full name wasn't that hard to work out so she had gone with that even though Prim would've, probably, been much easier. Stepping back from her handiwork, the Gryffindor witch stepped towards Max and smile at her boyfriend, silently congratulating him as she pressed a kiss to his cheek as she waited with the others on what would happen.

If the students were paying attention, then they would hear a distinct click as each one of them wrote their names—or what they thought their names were—on the door. When the last name appeared on the door the low groan of wood filled the hallway building and building into what sounded like a banshee’s wail. Then nothing, the noise stopped, the door remained embedded in the wall, and it appeared as if the students had failed.

A few seconds passed and still nothing until a loud pop as if from a balloon issued from the wood and the door sprang out of the wall back into place. The names disappeared and the students could enter or at least they could have had it not swung inwards to reveal Andrei. Striding out of the classroom he wore a small smile as if he were thinking about some inside joke only he knew.

“Good job, good job,” he beamed. “Now if you’ll step ins—“

The toll of the bell in the distance and the frown that tugged at the older man’s features told the whole story: they were out of time.

“Oh…Hmmm, well, read chapters one through four for next class and write a report about what you learned today.”

With that the man slunk back into his classroom. He had intended to include a pop quiz on the first day as well, but it seemed his class had dodged a bullet there. Next time…next time…

That's the bell!

Let's tally points and such...
Point structure:
-10 points for attendance
-10 points for participation
-10 points for answering questions

Please forgive me ahead of time; I don't have the patience for coding colors and such:
Students:
Clara Goldstein {Ravenclaw} = 20 points for attendance & participation
Maximillion Hollingberry {Gryffindor} = 20 points for attendance & participation
Primrose Seele {Gryffindor} = 20 points for attendance & participation
Elleon Caverly {Hufflepuff} = 20 points for attendance & participation

Now, let's tally these points up so we can get those bragging rights in order:
Ravenclaw: 20 points
Gryffindor: 40 points
Hufflepuff: 20 points
Slytherin: 0 points

If you have questions, comments, and/or concerns feel free to drop me a pm. Hopefully, I'll see all of you for next lesson as I'm trying to cook up something a bit more interactive. What is it you may ask, well, stay tuned and find out next time on ancient runes class...
