Caelan was extremely excited to start his First Year of Hogwarts, although his siblings had both been sorted in the same house, they each made such a large effort to spend time with him. Phil would follow him to the library and blab about whatever his little brother found interesting and Ellie would always be there after his classes. Which made him wonder if she ever fully attended classes, and he supposed she did because he’d no worried letters from his parents. Ellie was always sort of an independent clause in their family, so for her to tell him about her day and be there after classes ended to walk him to his next class (wait did she even make it on time? Okay now that was something less plausible) it meant a lot.

Yet he was concerned, were his siblings taking too much time out of their lives to be a more prominent part of his? It was very likely that was the case and he was merely wasting their time. No more, he thought as he slid into his classroom would he let his siblings be such a large part of his life. He had wings of his own to let fly, and Hogwarts was the best place to open them. At Professor Balan’s opening speech (really what an pleasant thing), and wincing just a bit Caelan watched the Professor’s movements with avid attention, and wanted to speak up but had no courage to face the idea of being wrong.

He watched the other students speak with admiration, both of them speaking so eloquently and correctly.

Alberi listened to what the professor began to explain. The rules were simple. He wouldn't have too much of a hard time following them. Though maybe he should try and be more... polite, at least here. As much as he loved to show what he knew, he couldn't do it all the time. The question is : Would he manage? Hopefully the fear of getting detention will stop him from making such a foolish mistake.

When the professor asked for them to answer what the Wideye potion was, Alberi quickly closed his eyes and tried to remember what he had read about it. He did lose the rest of his summer learning everything. Well, it wasn't really lost if it would help him have more free time now... If teachers here were like teachers in muggle schools, that is. But until he remembered everything, other two kids had stood up and talked.

Pity they took the more explained things, he thought. Though the Hufflepuff didn't have a good ending to what he said, it was understandable. 'Standard Ingredients' didn't really say much. As soon as he sat down, Alberi himself stood up, quickly clearing his throat. "I'm Alberi Woodston, sir." he began. "The potion is known to act as an antidote to the Draught of Living Death, I believe." he wondered if he should say what it's other name was but decided that this was enough and sat down.

The first to answer was a Hufflepuff student, Emilia, he made no notion of telling the witch if she was right, simply noting that she had grown flustered from giving an answer. James was glad she'd attempted it though, it showed courage to do such things.

His eyes moved to the next person who spoke, a boy who was not good with instructions, it would seem as he forgot to give his name as James had asked for. But again, James didn't speak.

The third was a Gryffindor, Alberi, who gave the final main point of the potion before sitting down.

There was a pause.

"It seems we have a number of bookworms in out midst." James explained with a small smile. "You." James added, motioning to the Hufflepuff boy who had spoken but not given his name. "Your answer was good, but I would insist that you pay much closer attention to instructions in this classroom if you wish to succeed." James explained, not angry, but not smiling to ease the blow either.

"As the three explained, the potion is used to keep you awake, as well as an antidote. Now, because of the brewing time of the potion, you will first do step one of the potion." James explained, motioning to the board that held the instructions.

1. Add 6 Snake fangs to the mortar
2. Add 4 measures of Standard Ingredient to the mortar
3. Add 6 Dried Billywig Stings to your cauldron
4. Heat on a medium temperature for 30 seconds
5. Finely crush the ingredients in the mortar
6. Add 4 measures of the crushed ingredients to your cauldron
7. Stir 3 times, clockwise
8. Wave your wand
9. Leave to brew and return in 8 hours (Copper), 14 hours (Brass), or 23 hours (Pewter).

"Once you have done this, I will come to your desk and shrink your cauldron, I will assess this work later after the time has elapsed. After this, I will give you a pre-made potion to finish step two, but we will see how you get on." James explained, hoping they were bright enough to understand. "You may work on your own, or you may work in pairs, but I expect everyone to put in effort. The ingredients are in the store cupboard. Don't think I won't notice if you take things you're not supposed to.

"When you're ready, begin."

Naomi bumped her shoulder against Finley's in a friendly manner as he sat down. She nodded when he answered his own question. "Yeah, I didn't exactly want to be caught up in... whatever's going on."

Listening patiently to the instructions, Naomi paled in horror when the professor told them they had to stand up to give answers. It was all she could do in most classes to raise her hand! She slid down a little in her seat as other students answered the question instead, thinking more details about the potion in her head, but nowhere brave enough to stand up herself.

When the professor began talking again, Naomi sighed, half in relief and half in disappointment at her own cowardice. She'd just have to do the potion excellently. "Want to work together?" she asked Finley when the instructions were done. "I'll start the fire if you go grab the ingredients."

Finley didn't know what was going on with the professor, so he simply kept quiet, making notes as fast as he could to make sure he didn't upset the professor. It seemed to work, once the questions were answered they were told to get on, and though Finley might not be good at magic, he was okay at potions.

It helped when he was calmer because measuring with shaky hands was really difficult, but he knew Naomi would help him.

And he was right, because not a moment later, Naomi had asked him to work with her. He grinned back at the young witch, nodding his agreement as he got up and hurried towards the store cupboard before anyone else could move. It was easy enough - the new professor seemed to have labelled the shelves impeccably this year. With his arms laden with the various jars, Finley moved back to the desk and set them out carefully, looking to his best friend.

"H-how do you w-want to do this?" He asked Naomi, looking to the instructions. "W-would you like to p-put things in to t-the cauldron? I'll m-measure?" Finley asked, though if she said she would rather measure then he wouldn't mind. So long as they got the work done, he really didn't mind who did what.

Naomi used her wand to start the fire as Finley went to grab the supplies. She glanced at the board and set the fire to medium temperature before filling the cauldron with water. When Finley got back, she helped him lay out the ingredients.

"That sounds like a great plan," Naomi said, smiling. "Let's get to work." The two alternately chatted and worked in silence, comfortable either way, moving in a rhythm born of a year of close friendship and working together in most classes.

Eventually, they reached the end of their instructions and Naomi waved her wand over their halfway completed potion. It turned the appropriate color for this stage of brewing and she smiled. "Alright, my cauldron is brass, so this needs to brew for..." she glanced at the board, "Fourteen hours before the next step can be taken." She raised her hand to attract the attention of the professor so he could come collect their partially completed potion.

Finley was glad Naomi had agreed to him doing the weighing out. He'd noted the use of a wand later on, and Naomi had always been much better out of the two of them when it came to using a wand. With the work carefully divided, Finley had counted out the Billywig stings and handed them to Naomi carefully.

Whilst she stirred them in to the cauldron, Finley had concentrated on the mortar work, adding the ingredients and setting to crushing the mixture to the fine consistency that the ingredients insisted on. The older Ravenclaw had waited for Naomi to agree it was okay before measuring out the four measures required and watched as his best friend added them to the cauldron.

When they'd gotten to the end, Finley checked the board in the same moment and nodded his confirmation on the timings. "W-well done!" Finley told his best friend, they made such a great team, Finley didn't know how he'd come up so lucky!

It seemed, to James, that his earlier assumption on the people sitting at the back usually being the less capable/involved students had been completely wrong. Or, so it seemed. The only two to make a move straight away were the two Ravenclaws at the back of the room.

He'd watched them out of the corner of his eye, and when the girl's hand had raised, he moved over to their desk, looking in to their cauldron.

The potion looked good enough for students of their age, and James allowed his lips to turn upwards in to a small smile. "Well done." He told the two of them shortly, taking out his wand and shrinking their cauldron before he placed a new one on their desk. "Another brass cauldron. It's been brewing for fourteen hours." James explained, laying a piece of paper on their desk. "You'll need these instructions to finish the potion." He added, before leaving them to it.

Dan read over the instructions carefully before going to the store room and collecting the necessary ingredients. He took a fortifying breath and contemplated simply fleeing the room entirely. No, best to at least give it a try before completely giving up. For all he knew, he could find himself to be decent at this. Doubtful, but Dan wasn't about to discard the notion just yet.

After reading the directions once more, he decided it would be best to get everything crushed or cut before actually adding anything to the cauldron, that way he could simply measure things out as he went and not worry about the timing or temperature quite as much.

He crushed the fangs and standard ingredient and set it aside. After making sure his cauldron was at medium temperature, he tossed in the billywig stings and let that cook for the designated time. While that cooked, he measured out the powder and added it once the thirty seconds were up. Three stirs clockwise and a wave of his wand, and he released a breath he hadn't realised he'd been holding. It seemed he hadn't blown anything up, and the potion wasn't eating through the cauldron, so he obviously hadn't been completely incompetent.

After listening to Professor Balan's explanation and instructions about the potion, Emilia went over to the store cupboard and grabbed all her ingredients, careful to grab exactly the right amount. She then, turned the flame on below her cauldron and began the preparation process.

She added six snake fangs to her mortar as well as four measures of Standard Ingredient, then left it there while she continued. The next step was the add six dried Billywig Stings to the cauldron, which she did, heating it on medium for thirty seconds. Finally, she went back to her mortar and finely crushed the ingredients together, tossing four measures of it into her cauldron.

With three clockwise stirs and a wave of her wand, she had completed the first part and raised her hand, eager to continue. She had followed all the instructions perfectly and felt pretty confident in her potion. She sat back, patiently awaiting Professor Balan.

She was never one for cooking or being a potioneer or anything of the sort, but she was one for following directions and that would be what helped her out. Following directions as well as reading books.
