A new term, and a lot of changes had come in to place. Since the last term, Louis had been promoted to the Head of Magical Law Enforcement, and had been given a lot of power. Well, Louis didn't see as he'd had less before, but not he was entitled to the power. And with the entitlement, Louis had made a lot of changes to both the Auror Training standards, and those working below him.

The combat lesson was being taken in the sports hall of the university because they needed the space for demonstrations. Desks were still lined up down one side though, because Louis still had theory to go through with all candidates.

The room was cool for September, stuffiness was not something Louis wanted, and thus the doors were going to remain open to keep the temperature down. Despite the physicality of the lesson, Louis was still dressed in his usual suit and tie, looking perfectly precise. His eyes were quite clearly showing that he didn't need to have more suited clothes on to kill a man, because he quite honestly could take a man down without batting an eyelid.

But that wasn't for now.

Beside him the chalkboard read Muggle & Magical Combat and on the desk was the Ministry approved booklet of acceptable force that could be used by each Auror in training. A thick book, in honesty, with far too many rules, but they would all need to learn it.

Now, it was simply a case of waiting for students to arrive.

It was the first class of the course, the one where all the impressions are made and she hoped to God no one built them on appearances. She had been running late and in the choice between dolling up and breakfast, breakfast had been a clear winner. The ensuing race against time to get dressed, pick up coffee and reach here in time earned her new bruise near knee which she got from tripping down the stairs of her dorm. It had been a nasty fall but not the worst she had had.

It was no surprise then, that her hair were up in a messy braid and a slightly crumpled T-shirt was all she could manage, but she looked decent enough when she checked herself out in one of the windows she passed on her way to get coffee. A quick run across the campus and she in the Sports Hall, where she skidded to a halt just outside the entrance, gulped down all her coffee, winced at the burning feel it left behind and walked in, trying to appear casual but failing entirely due to her pan ting. "Good morning, sir." She greeted, looking around to her surprise that no one was around. She was the first? Well, that was a first.

Mari, true to her nature that had been steadily recovered over time, walked into class with the serenity of the Caldwell she was, one that was both unsettling and mesmerizing to many who witnessed it. In the past months after reconciliation she'd fully assumed her duties as heiress whilst maintaining her studies, supported by her adoring (and equally adored) boyfriend Jake. There were still nights when she awoke screaming from memories, but those were now weeks, sometimes months between. And they only made her train harder the next day.

But when the witch awoke each morning, in the moment she opened her eyes to see Jake already gazing at her lovingly, the world stopped for the smallest moment, and she realized anew that she had done what had once seemed impossible. Marilyn had reclaimed her identity and rebuilt her life, not only regaining what she'd had, though not all of it, she'd built a better life. And she was shining in both her personal life and her work, which was greatly tied with her personal life, to be honest. Now that her cuffs were recieving the final green lights, ready for mass production, she felt that she was truly worthy again, of the name she wore.

The confidence she'd gained was only magnefied by the thousandfold after her successful operation in which she'd regained her soft voice, replacing the hoarse, wrecked vocal folds that had been so severely damaged in her captivity. And it showed in each elegant step as her heels click-clacked across the floor as she entered the area.

"Good Morning, Sir." She smiled at Louis, genuinly looking forward to this course. The witch had been, according to her teasing boyfriend, somewhat too excited when she'd learned that she'd have combat this semester, but she really couldn't be blamed. She was a Caldwell, she thought, the metal in her naval cool against her skin, supplementing her power, combat was what they were born for. Combat. Killing. Bloodshed. Tomato, tomato.

The new term had come around much quicker than Jake had anticipated. Which meant his work load increased. Sunday was once again the only day he had to himself, and that was soon going to be taken up with studying, he was sure. The morning had been the same as always, led in bed waiting for Marilyn to rise to the sound of the alarm. Today had been no different either.

Jake had given the witch a quick kiss before murmuring he'd get breakfast sorted for both of them. He disappeared soon after, making up some healthy porridge for both of them. When Marilyn had finally joined him (she always did take great care in getting ready) Jake had smiled at her attire, telling her she looked like some Chanel advert. Though, both of them knew, she could look like a little angel and gut you two seconds later before you'd even thought of blinking.

After changing to something less showy that his girlfriend - a short sleeved shirt and trousers, the couple had left for the university together. Entering the sports hall as they'd been told, Jake followed Marilyn in to the hall, acknowledging their professor with a "Good morning, sir" before taking his seat next to Marilyn.

Jake didn't waste time opening the book before him, skimming the notes they'd been given. He might never have finished a book in his life, but he knew it might help in this lecture to read up on some things before it started.

With the new term of university beginning, Scar could only describe herself as excited. She'd always loved learning, and now that her learning was focussed on a true passion of hers, it just made her so much more eager to go. Of course, knowing about a wide range of things was indeed useful in any line of work, she needed the specifics, especially if she were to become an auror.

She woke in the morning, bright and happy for the day to come. She was never a person to take long to get ready, quickly showering and changing into appropriate clothes for the course. She wanted to look presentable, and so dressed in black slacks, a simple white blouse and a black blazer. Her shoes were practical and flat, and her hair pulled back into a neat, sleek ponytail. She dressed both for comfort, and in the hope of looking professional.

She walked through the campus at a brisk pace, carrying a satchel across her chest, before reaching the Sports Hall where class would commence. "Morning Sir," she greeted with a polite nod, noting the others already there.

Louis had waited until the clock struck the hour, having nodded in response to each of his students greetings. The Frenchman stood perfectly still, waiting for everyone to take their seats, his eyes only moving to the clock once he'd counted slowly back to the hour. A second off, on his counting, Louis noted as he looked to the clock, happy enough with that piece of information.

There was one missing, but Louis would not wait for someone who was not capable of keeping to times.

"Good morning, everyone." Louis spoke, his voice not rising to fill the room because he commanded attention. If that meant straining your ears to hear, it meant you would. Louis didn't bother welcoming them to the university, there wasn't time in his schedule of work for such things.

"Let's jump straight in, shall we? You all know we're here to learn about Muggle and Magical Combat, and I'm sure some of you are just eager to get on with that." His eyes flickered to Marilyn momentarily with a very small flicker of emotion in his eye. Not an emotion relevant to the classroom, so he focused. "However, you're all looking in to becoming Aurors, so, who can tell me what the Ministry's view on combat is? Or who can take an educated guess on what they expect from you?" He asked, looking around the room to see who might have an answer.

"Let's jump straight in, shall we? You all know we're here to learn about Muggle and Magical Combat, and I'm sure some of you are just eager to get on with that."

Crossing her ankles in her seat Marilyn didn't miss the brief look from her Professor and a hint of a smile curved her lips as she listened. He knew her so well, he was right, Mari was ready to go, she was always ready to go, it was just the way her life was. Trained in various martial arts, an active member of the DeArbour Hunters. And she'd be all too happy to demonstrate her capabilities at the drop of a hat, the metal of the blad she had strapped to her upper thigh cool under her skirt.

In answer to his question Marilyn stood and spoke clearly, "The Ministry prefers, for example, that combat is only used as needed, aiming to detain instead of kill," Except when they called her to a mission, she thought briefly before sitting down again, happy with her answer.

Jake was glad the lesson started quite quickly. He didn't like sitting around, and classrooms weren't the most exciting places to be. Well, at least, not when you were on the learning side. Teaching was much more thrilling to the American, but that was for another time completely.

The lesson started with a good question, and Jake had barely been out of the starting blocks before Marilyn answered beside him. A small smile touched his lips at his girlfriend's competence. This was her specialty, really. Yes, he was a Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor, but he wasn't known for his combat skills.

When Marilyn had finished, Jake took to his feet, clearing his throat before he spoke. "I think my dad spoke of the notion of having to confirm there is a danger before combat. For example, we are not supposed to initiate a fight. We're supposed to react to a threat." Jake told the professor, sitting back down in to his chair and hoping that had made sense to the man before him.

It did not surprise Louis as to whom the first answer would come from. Marilyn Caldwell was by far the best student Louis had had the privilege of working with, and it showed in her mannerisms and answers that came not a moment later.

"The Ministry prefers, for example, that combat is only used as needed, aiming to detain instead of kill,"

A very small, very short chuckle left the Frenchman's lips. In time these students would come to realise that what they were taught and what happened in the real world were two different things. "Correct, Caldwell." Louis replied in response to her answer, before he noted the young man beside her, Newbury, take a stand.

"I think my dad spoke of the notion of having to confirm there is a danger before combat. For example, we are not supposed to initiate a fight. We're supposed to react to a threat."

"Once again, correct, Newbury." Louis responded to the answer with a small nod, before turning his attention to the room as a whole. "The Ministry have the notion of confirming the contact before you retaliate. Though Newbury missed the point that this is in long distance combat. Stake outs, the like. You will have to confirm you are okay to engage before you send in heavy fire in such situations. However, in one to one combat, you're not always going to want to wait for someone attack you before you retaliate. You could be injured, or worse, dead, in this time and you will have wasted both mine and the Ministry's resources in the process.

"Therefore, you need to know what you're looking for." Louis finished, flicking his wrist as a lifelike working model of a person came in to view. A woman to start with, beautiful in nature, and looking completely harmless. Her wand was not in sight, for Aurors would need to learn to identify those capable of wandless magic. Beside her, a small child.

"What would you do if confronted with the following situation?" Louis asked, looking around the room hoping for others to answer him. "The woman you see before you is a highly wanted woman. You know her to be laying low, and you see her out with this small child. The child, for note, is harmless and must not be hurt. You don't know what she holds in her handbag, but she is heading straight towards... an important member of the Ministry. The Minister, for example. What do you do?"

PostSubject: Re: Muggle & Magical Combat (Part One)   Muggle & Magical Combat (Part One) EmptyWed Jan 21, 2015 8:47 am

The sudden silence of the class surprised her, considering that she had managed to pass the time until now just noting down the stuff. An activity that she most certainly did mentally. She had a feeling that the professor wouldn't prefer a student jotting down notes like a reporter and since this was only her first class she really wanted to lay low. That plan came into some serious danger because of the sudden silence which prompted her to raise her hand and try o answer, all the while cursing herself. "Uh......sir? I think surprise would be one of our strongest weapons which at the present moment is on her side." She began analyzing  the different combat plans.

"So I think our first move should be something that she doesn't expect, something that throws her off balance." She almost sounded like she stalling because she was thinking what she should do in such a situation. If the woman was highly wanted and there was no wand in sight either she was going to pull it out suddenly and do some serious offensive spells, or she was had something else. Maybe a knife or something? Could also be those muggle explosives. Wait, wandless magic? She didn't know much about the concept but that wasn't good, ever. "I would stupefy the child to get it out of the equation, which she probably wouldn't be expecting because Ministry guidelines usually do not allow us to engage subjects like that. However, technically he isn't being harmed, per se. So that works too."

In situations like these, every second counted. Which was a concept she had learned from her accidental encounter with some muggle video games and she knew her next action had to be a quick one and in continuation of her old one. She couldn't raise a shield because for all she knew, the child could a hostage. She would have to engage the woman. If the woman could do wandless magic then simply restricting her movement wouldn't be enough either. That could work against her too, because such magic required immense concentration and that's how Zoya came up with her next plan of action. "Then I would use Deprimo to blast a hole in the floor near the woman's feet which should throw her literally off balance and distract her enough to break her concentration. Then, I would.......um.......stupefy her." The last bit was something she was unsure of because she was repeating spells but it wasn't like her reintroduction to magic somehow made her an expert. She was still learning and considering that, she was quite proud of her plan.
