| Mixed classes were a gamble. Though a lot of the time, the spell being learned was useful to all years, there were occasional lessons that were practically revision for the older students. This would be one of those lessons, she saw as she walked into the classroom and noted that they'd be learning the Levitation charm. But she wasn't particularly disappointed, revision lessons were good, and rather chill, in her opinion. She thought she'd be late, so she had started jogging to the third floor classroom, surprised that the class had yet to start.
She saw quite a few students already there when she entered, and quickly moved to find an empty seat, and got her notebook and pen ready, not that she thought she would need it, but just in case there was any new information. It was a rather good turnout, but she supposed people might have been needing to complete required classes. |

| As each student came into the class Sean nodded his head in greeting to them, deciding to forgo any sort of words until the lesson actually started. He could tell from the expressions on some of the faces that the children were not happy about the lesson but Sean was firm in what he was going to teach. Just because you knew the spell didn't mean you knew how to do it correctly and perfectly.
Not to mention, for the fifth, sixth and seventh years he had a special reason for starting with a simple spell. He wanted to get them started on silent casting and doing so with the first and second year spells was much easier than with the harder spells.
After all doing the spell when speaking was much different to silently; you had to concentrate more to get it working.
"Good morning everyone." Sean said with a smile on his lips as he flicked his wand at the door and silently closed and tightly locked the door with a ward; if some stragglers came the door would automatically open but otherwise it would stay close until he opened it at the end of the lesson. "I see we have many students here today, which I am pleased about."
He tapped his wand to the board to get everyone's attention on the spell they would be learning.
"Today we will be focusing on the Levitation Charm, a fairly easy spell for many of our older years, I am sure, but it's a good spell to get you started on channeling how much power you are using in them." The Charm's professor moved around the desk to perch against it, his arms crossing over his chest as he looked at each student in turn. "Now then, who can tell me the incantation for the spell, the wand movement and what the spell is mostly used for. For extra points you can tell me if the spell is Light or Dark."
At that, he held back a small smirk; he wanted to see how many students would be able to think outside the box of Dark and Light. He wanted to see just who would surprise him. |

| Lana for once, had read ahead in the chapter and was prepared for today's Charms lesson. She wanted to be ahead of the others, she wanted feel like she belonged at Hogwarts and so she tried instead of giving up. When the professor had asked a question, Lana's hand shot up, "Professor, the incantation is Wingardium Leviosa." The girl smiled softly.
She didn't know any of the other parts to the spell other than the fact that it was possibly light and used for obviously - levitating things but the incantation was a start.
The eleven year old's leg swung slightly above the floor, her wand rested atop her desk as she awaited further instructions and an acknowledgement of her answer being correct. She could make Hogwarts good if she tried, she could actually learn and be magical - she was sure of it. After all, she wasn't born knowing how to swim. All good things took time. |

| She was slightly late thanks to a visit to the Ministry for some slight vision she'd Seen, although it was so vague that not even the head of the department had been able to figure it out. Still, as she slid into class just as it was starting, she mouted an apology to the Professor and, Tammie beside her, moved to the front of the class, taking her seat.
Her eyes went to the board and then to the items on the desk, nodding along as the Professor gave an introduction. The spell, she knew well enough; it was basic, something she'd learnt in her first year.
It was the second question that made her stop to think, a light frown touching her features as she did. What was light? What was dark? She'd been afraid of the dark when she was younger, until Aunt Sally had told her something that changed her persepctive -- darkness, she had been told, was only the lack of light. That meant it didn't exist; it was an illusion, and why would one be afraid of illusions?
But they were talking about a different kind of Light and Dark here; it was more of good versus evil. And that was a question she knew the answer to. Raising her hand tentatively, she waited until she was called upon before, slowly, tone soft, answering, "Professor, your question is flawed."
She paused, gathering her thoughts. "Nothing is good or bad -- which is what light and dark is, right? Light magic is good magic that helps and dark magic is bad magic that hurts. But a spell can't be good or bad, like a knife can't be good or bad. A knife can be used to cut rope and free someone, or it can be used to hurt someone."
She took out her wand and laid it on the table before her. "This is also not good or bad -- not light or dark. It's a tool. I think the spell isn't good... sorry, light or dark. It just is. It's how it's used that makes it light or dark, right?"
Serenity wasn't actively trying to argue with the Professor per se; this had been everything she had been told and taught from a young age, since she was old enough to ask questions about good and evil. Since a lot of her visions were vague and sometimes scary, she'd been told this spiel of good vs. bad many times, as a means of comfort. Having said all she wanted to, she sat back, gaze firmly on the objects before her and waited for lessons to properly begin. |

| Mathew had sat silently throughout the beginning of the class, watching people who entered, listening to others try to answer the questions posed, and, noticing that one had not been answered, the Hufflepuff spoke without being asked, or raising his hands.
"I believe that the wand movement is that of a swish and flick Mathew told the professor with little and less enthusiasm. His tone was actually quite monotonous, even if his eyes were steely cold, piercing almost as he looked at the professor.
"As to the Light or Dark question. The Ravenclaw is right, unsurprisingly." Mathew continued, not even bothering to pretend he knew the witch's name. He didn't care. "If I use the spell to lift a piano that has conveniently fallen atop a woman and save her life, you would argue that the use of that spell was Light. However, if I had originally used the spell to conveniently fall atop the woman to begin with, you would deem it Dark.
"For many, however, it would be dependent on the caster. A Dark Wizard is likely to find ways to use a spell that would call it dark. Whilst a Good Wizard is likely to use it for Good. Right or wrong, however, is decided by who?" Mathew finished, his gaze unmoving from the professor as he waited for a reaction. |

| Sean smiled at the Hufflepuff first year and nodded his head. "Take five points to Hufflepuff Miss Okole." He said and turned to the class. "As Miss Okole said, the incantation is Wingardium Leviosa." The incantation wrote itself on the board before he turned back to face the class and with amusement listened to the arguments from the students about what Dark or Light were. It still amazed him to this day how children were quick to say nothing was light or dark only to change their mind later on in life.
"Take 5 points for the answer Miss Newman," He nodded his head. "And Mr Howard, take ten points for the answer to the wand movement and the answer to my last question." He said with a small chuckle as he leant against the desk. "You are both correct in saying that the question is flawed." He agreed as he crossed his arms over his chest. "But yes, the answer is that it could be either. It all depends on you and what you are going to use the spell for. However the Ministry, unfortunately for us, classifies spells as Light or Dark only. So spells like Wingardium Leviosa and Lumos are classed as Light purely because, to them, they can do no wrong. While spells like Avada Kedavra or Sectusepmra are Dark spells purely because they think they are only for killers."
He watched his students with a soft smile on his lips before clapping his hands. "Right, let's get on with the lesson then." He stood straight and looked at all the students there. "In this lesson, I will be splitting you into groups. The First, Second and Third years, I would like for you to move towards the right side of the room. You guys will be working on pronouncing the spell correctly, doing the wand movement correctly and then trying the spell. You have all lesson to get it right so don't rush and just take it easy. You may begin." He waited for the three years to get together before he turned towards the rest of the class.
"Now then, for the rest of you, what you will be doing is trying to cast the spell silently, wandlessly or both. It won't be easy, I can tell you that straight of." He warned the students. "You will get tired quickly and you will find that doing spells either wandlessly or silently will deplete your magical core quicker than you can say 'Quidditch'. However should you be able to get this, it will make it easier on you as doing spells silently will make it harder for someone to identify what spell it is. Not everyone remembers the wand movement or colour of every spell so that will be to your advantage. Of course, if you can get it both wandlessly and silently than that will be an even bigger accomplishment." He smirked at the students sat at the desks as he flicked his wand and silently commanded the desks to rise up with all the items on them; they were pretty heavy and while it certainly took magical power to do it, it didn't strain Sean at all. "Near the end, you should be able to silently levitate the items. You may begin and please try to not injure yourselves or anyone else. I would hate to take points off for fooling around in the class."
He then started moving through the class and helping students by giving them pointers on what they were doing wrong. |
