PostSubject: Defence Against the Dark Arts: Lesson One - Years 1-4   Defence Against the Dark Arts: Lesson One - Years 1-4 EmptySat Sep 02, 2017 10:49 am

The summer had been quite a good rest for Jake, time well spent with his children in the summer sun had brought his shoulders to something of a relaxed state. The Nightshade threat had been squashed in a midnight raid, and the main perpetrator, Isaac Hayford, had been remanded in Auror custody until his sentence of life in Azkaban had been given.

The Wizarding World had come to it's senses, now, a calm spreading across the world once more, much to Jake's happiness. Merlin knew the extra hours they'd spent tracking the Nightshade's movements had deprived his children of quality time with him. But, now that things had settled, Jake knew he'd have more time with them.

September had rolled back in, though, which meant Jake had more children to look after once again. He loved the kids he taught, they were all so switched on to learning, it was almost impossible for him not to go to lessons with a warm smile in place. Today's lessons, Jake had opted to split, knowing that he had to teach the younger years some more basic things than the older years.

On the board, Jake had put up the day's lesson behind him, before taking a seat on top of his desk and waiting for his students to arrive.

How to block, deflect, and avoid an attack.

Mercy was looking forward to this class--from the descriptions her older housemates had given her, this professor liked to give practical lessons, and everything about the subject appealed to her. In fact, even before going in, she had a gut feeling that Defense Against the Dark Arts would shape up to be one of her favourite classes. And the professor was an auror! A real life auror! She'd never met an auror before. She'd always had wild fantasies of defeating dark wizards and fighting off bad guys; it sounded like the coolest job. Maybe she could be an auror someday.

She entered the classroom and looked around. There was nobody else there besides the teacher. He looked nice. She smiled in greeting, some unabashed admiration most likely shining through in her eyes. Turning her attention to the board, she read the day's lesson plan. It seemed they were jumping right in, which was brilliant in her opinion. She knew blocking and dodging were essential skills in any fight. In fact, maybe what she learned here would carry over and help her in her dueling class--wouldn't that be neat? Man, this was her kind of school. Classes that taught you how to fight, and prepared you for the real world. She felt bad for her poor muggle friends who had to sit in class doing maths all day.

As she waited for the class to fill up, she attempted to strike up a conversation with the teacher.

"Hi! I'm Mercy. Are you really an auror? That's so cool."

Seraphina walked into the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom quietly with her head bowed. She worried her lip slightly without realizing she was doing it. This was perhaps the only class she was not sure of. She slipped silently into as seat allowing her hair to create a veil, guarding her as she mulled over the idea of the class in her head. She could practically see the thought being turned over and over in her head. She was not fond of conflict, only showing a combative side when given no other option. She, like so many of the creatures that fascinated her, preferred flight rather than fighting when presented with a less than favorable situation. The very idea of fighting made her palms become clammy.

With a tentative look she scanned the classroom seeing another student and the professor being the only other two beings in the room. 'Perhaps I could have dallied a bit longer with my research,' The brunette thought to herself. It was just her luck that she would be only the second student to arrive. Praying wildly that she would be overlooked by both people in the room. She decided that there was nothing else for it but to open her text book and look up deflective techniques. In Seraphina's humble opinion, the best way to avoid an unfriendly spell, was to avoid altercations altogether.

PostSubject: Re: Defence Against the Dark Arts: Lesson One - Years 1-4   Defence Against the Dark Arts: Lesson One - Years 1-4 EmptySun Sep 10, 2017 10:10 am

The first witch to come through the door was not one that Jake recognised, so, instantly, he put her down for a first year. After all, his class was compulsory for all through to fifth year, so he had a good grounding of who was who in the school. The smile on the younger witch's features was contagious, and Jake could feel his lips tugging up in to a smile.

The younger years were much more fun to teach, always so eager to impress, Jake liked working with them the most.

The question posed by Mercy brought a small laugh to his lips -- apparently the kid had either done her research, or else had been listening to rumours around the school already -- before he nodded. "I am an Auror, yes." Jake replied to the witch. "Have been for... close to ten years, now." Jake told her. Well, three of those years were training, but he'd had the joy of saying he was an Auror for almost ten.

"And, yes, it is a cool job." Jake added as an after thought. "Dangerous, but cool." He finalised, because he didn't want anyone to think it wasn't that way.

Shortly after, another student came in, again one Jake did not recognise. Once again he made the assumption she was a first year, but this one was quiet. Giving the witch a small smile as she got out her book, Jake decided not to press for conversation just yet. Instead, he looked down at his watch, checking the time, and then deciding it was probably a good idea to make a start on the lesson.

"Okay, we'll make a start, if anyone else joins us, that will be fine, they can catch up." Jake told the two girls before him with a small smile. "First things first, my name is Jake, I will be your DADA teacher for the year. Please don't call me Professor, I find that term too stuffy, Jake will be more than acceptable." He told the two, making it quite clear he was not some kind of authoritarian who was going to insist on stiff cordial terms like that.

"Now, if you look to the board, you will see today's lesson is on defending yourself. There are many different ways, magical and non-magical, that this can be done. We'll start by working through the ideas that you both have, how does that sound?" Jake posed the question to the two of them, before motioning to the board where the chalk was waiting to write up any ideas that the two of them could come up with.

OOC: You can still come in to the class, so please don't be put off just because I have started!

It wasn't unlike Eli to be late. Actually, it was rather in character. It wasn't necessarily on purpose either. More so, he lost track of time. He'd been far too busy eating to realise that he should have begun making his way to class. And upon realisation, he hadn't bothered to worry much. He was already late, there wasn't much he could really do to change that fact.

And why stress about things that were already out of his control?

Still hungry, he grabbed a bag of chips as he made his way leisurely to class. Upon entering, shoving a few chips in his mouth, his eyebrows raised slightly, mildly surprised that only two girls had showed up. Jake had just finished explaining what the lesson would be about.

He dropped his bag to the floor, with a thud louder than he'd intended before tilting the chip packet towards his mouth and emptying the crumbs before scrunching it up and stuffing the rubbish in his pocket.

"Sorry for the tardiness Jake," he flashed a grin "The food was just begging me to stay, y'know," he walked further into the classroom, stretching his arms out in front of him and cracking his knuckles and rolling his neck.

"You can start by having ninja-like reflexes and doing backflips and shi-stuff," swearing, he'd found, had almost become automatic. Something he had to correct himself on while around teachers. Honestly, it made for some awkward situations at times.

Mercy's eyes widened at the professor's answer. She'd only been alive for a little over ten years. She nodded when he said it was dangerous. In her opinion, that's what made it cool.

She was surprised when he started the class--there were only two students, including herself. She frowned, but then decided it could be a good thing, since that would mean they'd each get to participate more. She liked that she could call him "Jake," it made her feel more comfortable and relaxed, and it made the environment seem less like a school.

Another, slightly older looking boy sauntered into the classroom a bit late, but he didn't seem too bothered by that as he stuffed some chips in his mouth and casually joined the lesson. She thought she recognized him from the Gryffindor common room. She liked his confident attitude, he seemed cool--maybe they could be friends.

She giggled at his answer and pitched in. "Or you could use a shield. Or knock the other guy out before he has a chance to hit you."

Defence Against the Dark Arts: Lesson One - Years 1-4 Empty

"Nice of you to set a good example, Eli." Jake replied to the apology from the boy -- that was, in truth, all Jake ever asked for from his students, an apology for their lateness if they came in to the lesson late. Of course, he would always prefer people to be on time, but that would be an idealistic view of the world, and he himself had never been the most model student in the school.

The excuse that followed, though, made Jake shake his head with a mildly amused expression. "That, ladies," Jake addressed the two girls in the room. "Is exactly how you do not come up with an excuse." He joked, before turning his attention to the answers he'd been given from his previous question.

"That is one option for defending yourself, yes, Eli." Jake replied, though the idea of having the whole class perform backflips and such things was obviously not one Jake was considering teaching -- for one, he didn't know how to do a backflip himself, and two, the new Headmistress would likely have his job if the kids all ended up in the school nurse's office.

Turning to Mercy, Jake nodded enthusiastically at her answer, this one was much better than Eli's was, though, of course, Jake would not say such things out loud. "Quite right, Mercy." Jake praised the young Gryffindor. "Shield spells are the most effective way to defend yourself against most spells -- please note I have said most -- the Unforgivable Curses, which you will study in later years, are amongst the spells that will penetrate a shield charm. In such cases, Eli's suggestion of backflips would possibly come in handy.

"Or, of course, as Mercy has said, we can defeat our opponent before they have the chance of landing any spell on us.

"Now then, because we are specifically looking at defending ourselves today, you will be working with a dummy each." Jake explained, taking out his wand and flicking it towards the back of the room where three dummies came in to view. "They are enchanted to throw spells, objects, and basically anything at you to make you defend yourself. So, you can use the Shield Charm, Protego to protect yourself, or you can dodge things if you can't get the Shield up in time. Before you step up to the dummies, however, I would like you to practice your shield.

"Once I have seen you correctly complete the Shield Charm, you can move on to the dummies." Jake explained, before motioning them to watch him.

"The spell is done as so." Jake finalised, performing the spell in an overly flamboyant manner to emphasise the movement the students would need to use. Clearly, the professor spoke the word 'Protego' and without so much as a pause, a clear, strong shield set itself up before Jake. The kids would likely not manage something so clear, but it would set a goal. Muttering 'Finite Incantatum', Jake looked around the kids before giving a smile.

"Off you go, then!" He finished, waving them off to get on.
