Potions Lesson 2: Years 6-7 (Closed) Empty
PostSubject: Potions Lesson 2: Years 6-7 (Closed)   Potions Lesson 2: Years 6-7 (Closed) EmptySat Feb 03, 2018 5:51 am

January 2024

With his upperclassman, Mycroft decided that he would work to properly teach them how to brew potions that would be more advanced and more useful in the real world. Separating them would give him the opportunity to actually be more hands on and be in a better position to teach.

The first lesson had been challenging enough: the love potion. While some failed, some struggled and he knew that this time around he would need to make sure that would not happen again. For this time, the potions would go to people who needed it.

Wolfsbane Potion

Waiting patiently, he sat at his desk, waiting for his students to arrive. He knew his class was not popular and if he was honest he didn't care, so long as some would try and strive for a success, it would be enough for him.

Sasha has decided to take this time potions class even if she knew that she wasn't that good in it. This was still class she would really like to learn. So this is was why the girl walked into the Potions classroom.

"Hello," she said with a small smile on her face and took a seat in the back row of the classroom. She looked at the board to see what they will be learning here now. That lesson seemed to be a good one and could be useful one day. She knew she needs to keep following the recipe.

So the girl took out from her bag even her textbook since she knew she will need it in this class. She had no idea what they had learned class lesson since she wasn't then here. Anyways it doesn't matter that much since she is here now.

She was ready to learn.

Potions was a class that brought... mixed feelings, at best. On one hand, Professor Mycroft was, surprisingly, one of her favourites. It wasn't often that she liked the ones who dished out punishments and were strict about their classroom, but he'd been... different, and it had nothing to do with the fact he was both good looking and Tess' brother. No, in truth, there'd just been an understanding born between them through the month of cleaning his classroom after students had gone.

Stepping into the class, hoping that Tess was already there, and finding to her slight disappointment that she wasn't, Delia nevertheless moved to the front of the room, taking one of the stations right up front. "Professor," she greeted, grinning a tad at him. She wasn't scared of him, not really. "How were your holidays?"

Glancing at the topic on the board, she raised an eyebrow. That was a tricky potion to get right, and yet simplistic, in a way. It was, at the very least, straightforward with only a set of instructions and not too much leeway for imagination. It was, essentially, boring. Still, she didn't mind too much, knowing the importance of that potion. "At least it's not illegal," she murmured, then sighed a little and raised her voice, looking at Professor Mycroft as she did. "No chance of me taking any of this home either, I guess?" she asked, only a very slight hint of sarcasm indicating she was joking.

Elleon entered the classroom just in time to see Delia chatting with the professor. They were at an angle where he had no clear view of their lips so he let it slide, but knowing Delia, she'd probably be saying something witty or sassy. Seeing as the professor was otherwise occupied with Delia, Elleon made his way to his usual seat at the front of the room, nodding a greeting at Sasha, setting down his things, and looking to the board.

The Wolfsbane Potion was one he knew quite well theoretically but had never gotten the opportunity to try his hand at brewing it. At any rate, he was looking forward to the class. He'd found that Professor Mycroft liked to challenge his class. It wasn't usually easy or straight-forward. While Potions remained Elleon's top subject, he liked testing his abilities and his limits, seeing how much he was capable of and how far he could go.

Potions Lesson 2: Years 6-7 (Closed) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Potions Lesson 2: Years 6-7 (Closed)   Potions Lesson 2: Years 6-7 (Closed) EmptySat Feb 03, 2018 8:37 am

Elenore had been mortified after the last term with Potions. The failed attempt at a Love Potion had caused the young witch to question everything she knew about the love her Grandmere and she shared. She'd questioned, once more, if she was so deeply flawed that she was unlovable, and thought Grandmere had taken her in to her arms upon her arrival back at the Palace of Versailles, the feeling of being unlovable could not, or rather would not, be shook off.

But, even if Professor Holmes had, inadvertently, told her she was unlovable, Elenore was not going to shy away from the man's class.

Entering the classroom, a small smile upon her lips, Elenore greeted the professor with a soft 'Good morning', before moving to the back of the classroom to set up her own station. Looking up to the board, Elenore couldn't help but feel mightily relieved upon seeing the lesson was not going to focus on anything personal to them.

The Wolfsbane Potion, whilst extremely difficult, would be something Elenore could manage, one small step at a time.

PostSubject: Re: Potions Lesson 2: Years 6-7 (Closed)   Potions Lesson 2: Years 6-7 (Closed) EmptySat Feb 03, 2018 9:07 am

Potions, while not his strongest subject was a topic that he enjoyed for the pure fact that it required his attention and kept his mind from going off course as it tended to do in other lessons like DADA or Transfiguration. The fact that his brother was a Potions Master was another reason why he took on Potions, the man tended to get swamped with his work and Alexei wanted to be able to actually help him with the making instead of just sitting around and twiddling his thumbs.

Which is the precise reason why the seventh year Slytherin finds his way into the dreary Potions classroom. The class was small compared to his other classes but with Potions he wasn't that surprised, the subject on the board caught his notice and he stopped for a second before he moved towards the desk where Elenore was sitting, having spied her just moments before the board caught his eye.

"Good morning Professor." He nodded towards the professor before he turned a soft smile onto Elenore. "Good morning Elenore."

Slowly but surely his class began to fill up. Mycroft tried not to get amused by the fact that they all came in little hordes all of them greeting him good morning. Some were friendlier than others and some genuinely tried to be friendly. He knew that most did not enjoy his lesson but what was he to do?

Still, as the class doors closed behind the last person, he knew that it was time to properly begin his lesson. Clearing his throat he made sure to let people know that it was time to stop their chitter chatter and properly pay attention.

"Good Morning class" he drawled out. "Going forward, classes here will not be part of the lower classes. Rather I think that since you are all close to OWLs, and even graduating, I want to make sure that you are able to be competently brew potions in the real world."

"Today we will be brewing a challenging potion. I will not ask that what the potion is because we all know it. Instead I want you to answer this: why is this potion nearly impossible to brew by werewolves and others? There are two reasons that I can think of at the top of my head"

PostSubject: Re: Potions Lesson 2: Years 6-7 (Closed)   Potions Lesson 2: Years 6-7 (Closed) EmptyTue Feb 06, 2018 5:23 am

Almost slightly put off when Professor Mycroft ignored her statement, Delia had been very nearly tempted to say "I thought we were friends!" but decided against it. She may have found a soft spot for the male, and had an inkling that he was fonder of her than he let on, but she wasn't going to put that to the test, especially not in front of other students. As class started though, she turned her attention to the topic, trying to recall any information she'd heard about it.

She knew, straight off the bat, that the textbook answers were simple: the main ingredient was poisonous, and could be deadly if mishandled or brewed incorrectly, and the ingredients were pricey. For a moment she was tempted to give those, and take the easy way out, but then flashes of her conversations with the professor over her month of detention filled her mind and she rolled her eyes inwardly.

With a very soft sigh to herself that was almost inaudible, she spent a few more moments thinking before raising her hand. Once called on, she said, "Well, aside from what the textbook says about price, danger, and it's complexity, I would say that werewolves aren't always welcome. There's a stigma around them that's negative, and so to brew the potion would be to advertise that either you or someone you know is a werewolf, and if they're hidden or not registered (seriously, what the fuc... uhm... heck is with registration?) it could be condemning to brew. They wouldn't want it to be traced back to them."

She paused, gathering her thoughts, and then went on. "I also think that the desire and desperation of needing the potion could affect the potion itself." She shrugged. "Potions do need care and attention, and it's true that some potions fare better when it means something to you. I don't think the wolfsbane is one of those, though I've never made it or seen anyone make it. I think this one requires impartiality. If it means something to you -- if your life or the life of someone you loved depended on it -- it's easier to like, put too much magic or energy into it or try too hard and end up with it failing."

PostSubject: Re: Potions Lesson 2: Years 6-7 (Closed)   Potions Lesson 2: Years 6-7 (Closed) EmptyTue Feb 06, 2018 6:45 am

"Morning, Alexei," Elenore replied softly to the Slytherin as he came in to sit next to her. That made her feel much more relaxed, with her friend by her side... she would be untouchable. Yes, that was what her mind supplied her with.

But, almost as soon as Alexei had been seated, the Professor was starting the lesson, which cut out all possibility of small talk between Elenore and Alexei in that moment. Elenore would never, ever, dream of talking over a professor, and so she fell in to the lesson with ease, and quietness much like the rest of the room.

As the lesson started, Elenore took in the changes -- one she could see the benefit of, and agreed with -- and then the question. It took a moment for her to come up with the answer -- costs -- but in that time Cordelia had raised her hand and answered. But, as Professor Holmes had said, there was more than one.

Once Cordelia had finished, Elenore raised her own hand. "The difficulty of the potion would be a large factor in someone's decision. You have to know that the potion you are brewing is of a very high quality for its effects to be fully effective. Is every werewolf in existence a master potioneer? I would very much doubt this to be true. So, I would imagine many werewolves don't brew their own, because they can't.

"Elaborating on this point, not all werewolves are adults. A highly experienced individual would have to take great care in making it, a child would find this task almost impossible." Elenore supplied, giving Professor Holmes a small, hopeful smile. She was going to show the man that she could do well in this class, even if she had to put her own worries aside whilst in his classroom.

PostSubject: Re: Potions Lesson 2: Years 6-7 (Closed)   Potions Lesson 2: Years 6-7 (Closed) EmptyTue Feb 06, 2018 9:17 am

The classroom, like always, fell silent as soon as Professor Mycroft started talking and Alexei made sure to focus on the man who was teaching them the art of Potions. The fact that the topic of the lesson that day was Wolfsbane made the Slytherin focus even more on the subject.

As he listened to the questions and the answers, Alexei paused and tried to figure out what other answers would be acceptable to the ones that the girls said but apart from the obvious ones in the books, there was nothing else that Alexei could say. "The ingredients in the Potion would be another reason as to why werewolves wouldn't make the potion themselves," Alexei answered with a raised hand, his tone careful and polite. "Not only are the ingredients costly but most of them are also dangerous for werewolves. The main one would be wolfsbane or aconite as the leaves are highly poisonous and the poison from those leaves are detrimental to wolves, even werewolves."

The subject was one that he liked but he did hate the theory of it though his brother had told him that theory was important to Potions.
