Eden Ming || 15 || HufflepuffBefore Christmas Hols Transfering from Ilvermorny to Hogwarts had been hard. The culture was vastly different from what he was used to, and being American-Chinese didn't make things easier; his accent and upbringing meant he didn't fit in with other American transfers, but he also didn't belong with the Chinese cliques (he didn't, after all, speak much Mandarin). More than that, though, he didn't have what he considered one of the most important aspects of who he was -- his plants.
Back in America, Ilvermorny had discovered his fondness and skills at plants early on, and by the time he entered his second year, he had already been given his own space in the Greenhouses and was 'official' student caretaker, assisting the gardeners whenever he had time. He was even given extra credit for the hours he spent in the Herbology classrooms, assisting the Professor with caretaking. He'd grown to know each plant personally, not giving them names but knowing their likes and dislikes, how to have each thrive...
And he'd left it all behind the moment his father said "We're moving to England."
One year he'd been at Hogwarts. Three-hundred-and-sixty-five days had come and gone, each day Eden finding himself slowly adjusting to the new world he had been thrust in, and at the same time his longing for his old home growing. Eventually, he managed to convince the Herbology Professor of his skills and, with some written 'resumes' from his previous school, he'd been allowed to help out at the Greenhouses here, too.
It wasn't the freedom he was used to, nor was he allowed to experiment with the plants, but it was something and that was always better than nothing. At the very least he didn't have to spend weekends trying to socialise with people who didn't care about him; he had an excuse to go off on his own, and spend time with his plants.
He'd managed to get permission -- after much pleading -- to have a single row at the very back of one of the Greenhouses, where he currently had placed his favourite cacti and a couple pots of flowers. If the school wanted to bring in more plants, though, his would have to go. Still, for now, he had his hydrangeas to play with, and with them starting to germinate, he would begin his experiments into cross-pollinating them, hopefully producing some purple flowers. He planned on staying the entire Christmas holidays, too, in order to properly care for them.
And so his entire Saturday morning was spent doing that, before, after eating a quick lunch he'd brought with him, he turned his attention to the rest of the Greenhouse. It wasn't explicitly necessary, but Eden still loved to do rounds, making sure each plant was healthy, happy, and had everything it needed to thrive. He had just started on the third row when he heard the door to the Greenhouse open, and automatically glanced towards it, wondering who else would be there. |
