What is Wrong With You? (Elenore) Empty
PostSubject: What is Wrong With You? (Elenore)   What is Wrong With You? (Elenore) EmptySun Jan 28, 2018 9:26 am

The arrival of Mimosa's letter had been one of the worst pieces of correspondence Jacques had ever received. It was filled with the hatred of his younger sister's mind, and the helplessness of the child he'd wanted to protect for the longest of times. If Maman and he had thought this would go away after the explosion at the Palace, then they had, without a doubt, been completely wrong in their ideas.

The initial outburst Jacques had put down to an overwhelming level of stress in his younger sister, which had come to a head at Mimosa. Unfortunate, misplaced, and not truly meant. Jacques had believed in the weeks that past that she was simply resolving those issues with the aid of Grandmere who had always been her closest confidant.

What Jacques had never truly believed, was that Elenore could despise Mimosa as she did in the words written for him to see.

At this point, it had been clear that they were dealing with something much, much worse than they could have imagined, which meant Jacques had to step forth. Step forth to try to mend his family that was breaking down around him, in a manner he'd never believed possible in the Clement household, but it was. And it had to stop.

The first letter went to Mimosa. He ignored the writing at the bottom, hoping she didn't realise that the bottom of the letter had been filled with Elenore's words. The second letter went to his professor, explaining that something had come up at the Palace, and that he would be absent from classes for the next few days. That, on his return, Jacques would arrange a meeting with the professor to discuss the work he needed to make up, and, of course, that he was sorry for the inconvenience he was causing.

The third letter had not been so easy for Jacques. As he pulled the third sheet of paper towards him, Jacques knew that writing to his Maman would set off alarm bells -- his last letter had gone only two days ago, and he'd not yet received an owl back with the reply. But, there were things in this world that you must do, even if it resulted in worry of the woman you loved most in the world.

29 October 2023

My dearest Maman,

I know I wrote to you only two days ago, and I know that upon seeing my hand for the second time in such quick succession is going to cause you worry. Please, Maman, do not worry. All of your children are safe.

I trust you and Papa are still doing well on your visit? Have you heard of the news of Sebastian and Aiden, Maman? I sent word with your PA to attend to the matter so that you need not worry on that whilst you're away.

Maman... I know you're away, and I know you can't come back until December, as was originally noted. I'm not asking you to, either. But, when we're both back at the Palace, we need to talk Maman, it's important... I can't divulge more in a letter, it would be unwise to do so. About what happened in the summer.

Your loving son,

Jacques

The letter was cryptic, and Jacques was not entirely sure he should send it. But, it was only fear of the unknown that was holding him back. Fear of what would happen if he didn't tell his Maman. Fear of what would happen if he did. If you lived your life stuck in fear of the world, you would never achieve anything. In this moment, that was not an option. It was why not ten minutes later, three owls left the owlery, heading off in different directions before Jacques apparated back to the Palace.

Mimosa's broom was retrieved, the kitchens were sent to work making Mimosa's favourite foods to take with him. Word was left with the staff that there was absolutely nothing he wished to be spoken about to in the next few days. Anything coming in to the Palace was not comparable in that moment. The rest of the twenty ninth was spent at the Palace, preparing for the next day, as he sent word forth to Mrs Goshawk of his need to speak to Elenore and Mimosa. Elenore first, though, if the Headmistress would be so kind as to arrange for Elenore to be brought to the Headmistress' office at ten am the next morning.

Without reason being given.

After an evening of no sleep -- how had they allowed this to happen? -- Jacques had rose from his bed the next morning feeling worse for wear. Dressing in a black suit, the Clement her had taken the time to right any sign of stress, and tiredness from his body before apparating to Hogsmeade. At the gate of Hogwarts he was met by the groundskeeper, and Mimosa's gifts were taken off to the young witch separately. Mimosa would know of his arrival, but first. First he had to deal with the person pretending to be his sister.

As promised, Jacques arrived at half past nine at the Headmistress' office. With a thank you for her kindness -- though they both knew a sizeable donation was coming the school's way -- Jacques was left alone amongst the portraits, waiting for his sister.

Jaw set, and eyes sitting perfectly on the door, his eyes almost as cold as his Maman's could be when not impressed with a situation.

Now, all he had to do was wait.

What is Wrong With You? (Elenore) Empty
PostSubject: Re: What is Wrong With You? (Elenore)   What is Wrong With You? (Elenore) EmptySun Jan 28, 2018 10:40 am

No one had seen the smile on Elenore's lips as she emerged from the restricted section only a few moments after delivering the awful news of the massacre of more than two dozen gay men in America. It was not the incident itself that brought forth the smile, though, no, that was a shocking incident, one that only America could allow. Her smile was because she'd done exactly as she had intended.

Breaking Mimosa's bubble at the school.

The witch was taking up too much of the gossip. Too many people thought her to be untouchable, a Clement, and Merlin only knew what else. Elenore had, in her own mind, not had a choice but to shut the witch down before she ruined the family name with her blase idea of the world. And, it had been much too easy to break the younger witch in that moment. Fate had offered Elenore the perfect part in that moment, and Elenore had used it fully.

The relief had washed over her in that moment, secretly glad of finding a way of breaking the child who was seen to be perfect to the whole world. Why nobody could see all of her faults and shortcomings was beyond Elenore, but she didn't need her family to see. She would make Mimosa see this herself.

But, what Elenore had not factored in, was Mimosa's quill that loved to write anything down that was being dictated in that moment.

Nor, had Elenore even noticed the device.

***

Elenore's mood had been greatly improved in the days that followed. Mimosa's lack of presence in the castle was most refreshing, and the world's order seemed to be improved. There was freedom to move around without potentially running in to the younger witch, classes seemed to run that much more smoothly, and Elenore had everything exactly how she wanted.

Or, close enough.

The note had come at breakfast that morning, from the Headmistress, asking Elenore to come to her office at ten. Elenore had been curious, she didn't see a reason for the Headmistress to call for her -- after all, Mimosa wasn't clever enough to get her in trouble, that much had been evident at the Palace -- so what the Headmistress would require of her, Elenore didn't know.

Still, the witch had headed off for her first class, handing the note to the professor to show she had to leave slightly early to attend to the Headmistress' summons. The class had been relatively enjoyable, but not the most fun, before Elenore had headed down the stairs to the Headmistress' tower. At the bottom, Elenore told the gargoyle of her business, and showed him the note, before she was allowed up. As the stairs twisted up and round, Elenore flattened her robes in that moment, making sure she looked presentable before they stopped outside the door.

One single moment in which Elenore place a small smile on her lips, and the Hufflepuff witch knocked on the door, waiting for permission. No noise came from behind the door, though, so Elenore allowed another moment, before carefully pushing the door open herself. Stepping in to the room -- a room which Elenore had never seen before -- the witch took it in, before her eyes landed on the desk, and, more importantly, her brother.

"Jacques..." Elenore managed, the single word shaking slightly as it left her lips.

Panic began to set in in that moment. Jacques was here. Which meant Mimosa most have sent for him...

"What a lovely surpri-"

But the coldness in his eyes brought Elenore to a halt with that sentence.

He knew.

What is Wrong With You? (Elenore) Empty
PostSubject: Re: What is Wrong With You? (Elenore)   What is Wrong With You? (Elenore) EmptySun Jan 28, 2018 11:12 am

When the knock at the door came, Jacques stole himself one steadying breath. He was not ready to do this, not in the slightest, but that did not mean he would shy away from his responsibility within the Clement household. Jacques did not answer, though, knowing it would give too much away, and he didn't wish for Elenore to go running before he had chance to talk to her.

The moment in which it took her to decide to open the door, Jacques slid his wand from it's holder on his belt, and held it down at his side. The person pretending to be his sister entered, not concentrating on the person before her in the first couple of moments, but the room at large.

It allowed Jacques the moment to close and lock the door, ensuring they would not be disturbed, but also ensuring Elenore could not run from the consequences of her actions. Placing his wand on the desk, Jacques waited. Until Elenore's eyes landed upon him and the surprise on her features showed in that moment. The sound of his name leaving her lips was not one he cared for, and as she dared to pretend she hadn't known why he was here with the pleasantries, Jacques' features turned darker.

Elenore stopped, though, and Jacques could only feel a deeper loathing for the young woman before him.

Reaching in to his jacket, Jacques extracted the letter that he'd received from Mimosa, and opened it very carefully.

"Elenore!" Jacques read, depicting the excited tone he simply knew Mimosa would have used upon seeing the witch before him.

"I would insist that you read page forty five, however, I don't have all day to watch you stumble over the words." Jacques read, putting no kind of tone in this, simply reading what the letter said.

"I don't..." This was said with a tone hinting confusion.

"Your friend, Sebastian, and his husband Aiden, were murdered in your beautiful country. Murdered because they loved each other, the newspaper claims. Dead.

"Oh! This is part of the game... You're just teasing, aren't you? What does it really say?

"Oh, yes, Mimosa. I am, of course, teasing you about the death of your uncles, because, you know, to joke about such things is a common occurrence in the life of lady such as myself.

"I don't... un-understand...

"Your uncles went to a bar... a bar especially for men who like men. When they left the bar, they were caught up in a hit and run. The pickup ran over Sebastian and Aiden, from what I can gather. And then the driver got out, and shot them with a Muggle device, a gun. To make sure they died.

"N-no...

"That's the truth, Mimosa. They're not coming back, and not even you can make them. You'd be wise to wear black for the next two months. They were, after all, your Uncles."

As Jacques finished, he folded the letter back up, tucking it back in to the inner pocket of his suit. His eyes moving back to Elenore in that moment. There was no question in his eyes, it did not take a genius to work out what Elenore had been trying to do. It did not need Jacques to ask if he'd read it correctly, if he'd understood, because it was a dictated letter, and the beauty of all of this meant nothing was changed from the words being spoken.

But the question of it all remained. A question Jacques had not believed he would ever have to ask his younger sister.

"What has come over you, Elenore? Mimosa is a Clement Ward. She is one of us." Jacques told her, because so long as he was around, he would not allow anyone to forget that Mimosa was one of their own. "I don't know what is going on, Elenore. I don't know what reason you see fit to do this to Mimosa, but I am telling you, right now, that this stops today. We're all a family, we will always be a family, and unless you have forgotten every lesson you've ever been taught, family comes before all else."

Jacques paused, his anger flashing in his eyes. For as much as he was his Maman's son, he'd inherited his father's temper. But, he took a few moments to steady himself, knowing that no good ever came from losing his temper, and no good would ever come from it either.

"What would Maman say, if she knew about this?" Jacques asked, his voice barely above a whisper, but by no means soft. "Or Papa? Grandmere? Maman and I haven't even told Papa about what happened over the summer, but now you've done this..." You're leaving us with very little choice. The unspoken words were palpable in the room, but they were a necessity.

What is Wrong With You? (Elenore) Empty
PostSubject: Re: What is Wrong With You? (Elenore)   What is Wrong With You? (Elenore) EmptySun Jan 28, 2018 12:02 pm

Elenore's dread grew in that moment, watching her brother's movements carefully. As he pulled a letter from the pocket inside his jacket, Elenore knew that Mimosa had written to him. It was not a surprise, they'd been doing it for years, but Elenore had counted on the younger witch's indiscretion on the subject, assumed she'd been broken far enough to not think of contacting the Palace, of contacting Jacques.

Where Elenore had expected the child to have written a complaint to Jacques of Elenore's behaviour, in which she could easily explain it to have been a misunderstanding, or else, something minor, the Hufflepuff had not expected what came next.

As Jacques' lips moved to recreate the situation that had unfolded, Elenore's heart was thundering in her chest. Deafening her ears to the sound of her brother's voice in that moment, and making her breathing almost hurt in that moment.

The Quill...

Elenore's eyes remained on her brother, though they were not truly seeing him as his lips continued to move. How had she not thought of that? In her haste to break the younger witch she'd not thought about the items around Mimosa as she sat. Hadn't noticed the sound of the quill scratching over the page to correctly take down the whole conversation. Elenore had left herself open to all of the reprimanding in the world, for a moment of stupidity, and she knew there was no way in which she was going to be able to get out of it.

Jacques wouldn't understand, either.

No one did.

Except Grandmere.

"What has come over you, Elenore? Mimosa is a Clement Ward. She is one of us."

The words shook Elenore in that moment, for even though Jacques hadn't said it, she knew what he'd meant in the first sentence. As always, he took the side of the one person in the Palace that didn't need help, took the side of the young witch who was not, and never would be, family.

But, almost on cue, Jacques was reminding her that Mimosa was family. She would always be family to him. But, that did not mean she would have to follow what he said.

It was not the idea of Mimosa being family that irked Elenore in that moment, though, the young witch's fears were growing by the second as he brother denoted that he didn't know what had made her do it. If he didn't know, he should have asked, but the moment in which he mentioned not knowing, it was almost as if he'd written that off. As if knowing her was not something that matter to the Clement heir, and wasn't, Elenore supposed, something he cared about...

So long as his Mimosa was okay.

For, in Elenore's ears, Jacques' words of being family did not apply to her. A family, as the books always showed, were there for one another. Jacques had not been there for her when Maman had cruelly tried to set her up with Mycroft Holmes, he'd instead encouraged the idea. A family was supposed to be loving, but the Palace was a cold, hard place, where nobody loved a daughter, a daughter was temporary, and Elenore's time was running out. But, above all, a family did not try to replace you, they needed you, and if the Palace had taught her one thing, it was that she was neither needed, or irreplaceable.

But even though Jacques had posed a question, Elenore's lips had not moved to create a response in that moment. Breathing was about all the youngest Clement could manage in that moment, trying to regain the equal, soft heartbeats that accompanied her through her day, and rid herself of these deep, painful beats that were reminding her of the pain Mimosa inflicted on her all the time.

"What would Maman say, if she knew about this?"

"She doesn't care..." Elenore replied, words no more than a whisper in that moment, because it was one thing to believe that her Maman didn't care about her, but quite another to speak them

"Or Papa? Grandmere? Maman and I haven't even told Papa about what happened over the summer, but now you've done this..."

The Hufflepuff witch's frame shook, trying to keep herself calm in that moment, despite the pain engulfing her in waves that came from the reprimands from Jacques. The thought of Grandmere was not one she wished to go to, but the threat that they would go to Papa.

Elenore's eyes met Jacques' in that moment, trying to decipher his seriousness in that moment. If Papa knew... Elenore hadn't thought of her Papa, the Lord Clement. "Papa..." Elenore mouthed softly, her eyes trailing away from her brother in that moment. Was he not planning on getting rid of her anyway? Marrying her away from the Palace? To a Holmes, to a Valentino, perhaps the Murrays... Her time was limited anyway, so what did it matter what her parents thought of her, she wouldn't be their problem for much longer.

"They're planning my betrothal, Jacques. You need not worry what they think." Elenore replied, emotion not meeting those words in that moment, because she'd long since come to the realisation of her worth within the Palace. She was worth nothing, of that much her Maman had been quite clear the last time they spoke. "They've brought in Mimosa to ensure that they have everything they need."

And, I am not what they need.

It was a cry for help. It had always been a cry for help.

But no one from the Palace understood.

What is Wrong With You? (Elenore) Empty
PostSubject: Re: What is Wrong With You? (Elenore)   What is Wrong With You? (Elenore) EmptySun Jan 28, 2018 12:33 pm

Seeing Elenore say that their Maman would not care made Jacques shake his head, growing more frustrated with his sister in that moment. She didn't understand, in the slightest, how much their parents loved them, cared for them, would be disappointed in them if they knew the extent of the destruction Elenore was trying to cause to a child.

But Elenore's ideas just grew worse in that moment, and Jacques could not help but feel thoroughly disappointed in his sister. How could she..?

Standing from his desk, Jacques moved to stand before Elenore, his hands moving to the tops of her arms in that moment. "Look at me, Elenore." Jacques told her, voice still quiet, but still not softening. "I don't know what is going on in your head right now. I don't know what's upset you, I don't know why you think Mimosa is here to replace you. I don't know why you think we're trying to get you to leave the Palace in a betrothal, but none of this is true. It has never been true."

The explanation was not one Jacques was happy giving, and he did not wish to linger on the subject. Elenore was being stupid, untrusting, and her actions were making her look very questionable within her role of the family. But, this was not something Jacques could fix on his own. Their Maman needed to be brought in on the matter, to make things better, and, right now, Elenore was not the most important person in the problem.

"Promise me, Elenore, promise me you won't go looking for Mimosa again. Promise me you won't try to hurt her again. Because, I can promise you, if you do this again, I will ensure the Palace will not be a welcome sight in the holidays." Jacques told her, because he could not face seeing Mimosa upset and hurt again. Elenore might be his sister, but Mimosa was a child, and children needed protecting at all costs.

A small, meek nod came from Elenore in that moment, and Jacques' hands let go of her.

"Now, go, you have classes to attend." Jacques told her, no hint of warmth, or reconciliation in his tone. He might have stopped Elenore from doing it again, but this, by no means, meant this was over.

What is Wrong With You? (Elenore) Empty
PostSubject: Re: What is Wrong With You? (Elenore)   What is Wrong With You? (Elenore) EmptySun Jan 28, 2018 12:51 pm

And it went unnoticed once more.

As Jacques' large hands took hold of the tops of her arms, Elenore could feel herself shaking more in that moment. His grip wasn't hard, but it was firm enough to remind her who held the power in the situation. The trembling did not stop as Jacques tried, with all his might to tell her that her thoughts were misguided, untrue.

But, he missed the point.

He'd missed the fact she needed him to offer his help. He'd missed how she needed to talk through it all with him. How she'd simply needed Jacques to tell her -- with sincerity -- that everything she'd ever believed was not true, and that she was needed, that she was loved, and that the Palace would always be her home.

All Jacques had done was reaffirm that he didn't know what was going on, and that he didn't want to know.

That even though he was denying all of her words, he was ensuring she knew that she was not important enough in his mind to warrant the attention of finding the source of her pain. It was to be swept under the rug, and not spoken of again.

With that knowledge came the closing of the door on that doorway of hope that had been opened a few moments later. Shutting Elenore back in to the darkened abyss of her own mind, because her brother had just added himself to the list of people who would never, ever, love her like Grandmere did. Like her Maman, like her Papa, Jacques was just another person now. Another person who didn't understand.

"Promise me, Elenore, promise me you won't go looking for Mimosa again. Promise me you won't try to hurt her again. Because, I can promise you, if you do this again, I will ensure the Palace will not be a welcome sight in the holidays."

Jacques' promise might have hurt Elenore at another time, but she'd already closed the door to him. His promise held no hurt, because she'd had nothing left to lose at the Palace, but Elenore supposed he'd fooled himself to thinking she believed she could belong.

So, Elenore simply gave a small nod of her head, showing she'd understood the words, even if she did not truly wish to agree to them. After all, her own wishes, her own needs, her wants, they'd never been considered before now, why would they be considered now?

As Jacques told her to head back off to class, Elenore nodded once more, turning for the door without another word. Whilst Elenore should probably have addressed him before she had done so, the youngest Clement did not care for formalities in that moment, only getting away from her brother before the pain crashed over her in waves much more blinding than those she'd felt in July.

He's just doing Maman's bidding, I suppose, Elenore thought to herself as she opened the door, and stepped out on to the spiraling staircase to make her descent.

Jacques' cold heart had to have come from somewhere, after all.
