Potions Lesson One - Fifth to Seventh Years Empty
PostSubject: Potions Lesson One - Fifth to Seventh Years   Potions Lesson One - Fifth to Seventh Years EmptyThu Apr 30, 2015 7:11 pm

After finally cleaning the potions room back to an acceptable standard after the younger years had left his classroom, James had set out the ingredients for the next class on his desk. He wasn't quite sure how many students he would be expecting as he'd misplaced his student list, but he was sure there would be at least one student.

The board already held the name of the potion they would be studying and hopefully most students would recognise it. The Invigoration Potion had likely helped a few of the students through a long night's studying if they'd already done their O.W.L.S. but he didn't have any hopes for how resourceful his students would be.

With one last check that everything was just so, James took his seat at his desk, waiting for the room to fill up with students so that he could begin the class.

Kirsten didn't much like potions. Mainly because she wasn't good at it. Theoretically, she was brilliant: she knew all the methods, the ingredients and effects and all the rest of it. It was just when it came to actually making the potion, and she failed miserably. She didn't see how it made sense, since when she was making the potion she was sure she was following the instructions exactly right. Nonetheless, she couldn't manage to brew anything right, so it was one of her least favourite subjects, most definitely.

But she carried on attending class because she was aware of what a useful qualification it would be when it came to finding a job. Anyway, a talent in potions was a family trait, which Kirsten needed to possess. What if something tragic was to happen to her older siblings so she was forced to take over one of her father's companies, the one which specialized in potions? It would be awful, but less so if she knew the basics of the subject at least.

She nodded at the professor as she came into a room, and took a seat somewhere in the middle, occupying herself getting out her things and arranging them neatly on the desk. Organisation made waiting far more bearable. It shouldn't be too long until the class started anyway, Kirsten imagined.

Potions Lesson One - Fifth to Seventh Years Empty
PostSubject: Re: Potions Lesson One - Fifth to Seventh Years   Potions Lesson One - Fifth to Seventh Years EmptySat May 02, 2015 10:40 am

Victoria was elated with her timetable. A timetable that was stocked to the brim to make sure she made the most out of her time at the school. She'd seen her brother's worried look over the summer when she'd call by to see him, but she'd assured him she could manage. The teachers hadn't bat an eyelid, they knew Victoria well enough by now to know she could cope with the studying.

And this year, was her last, she had to make it count.

Hurrying down from the Head Girl's Common Room, Victoria managed to slow herself down enough as she got to the door to compose herself before slipping in to the room. A Slytherin girl - Kirsten if she remembered correctly - had beaten her to the room, not that she minded. "Good morning!" Victoria greeted her fellow student before moving to her usual seat at the front of the class, smiling towards the professor.

"Good morning, Professor Balan." Victoria greeted the man, taking her seat and taking out her books, ready for the lesson. Noting the words on the board, Victoria smiled to herself at the look of what they would be doing. This was going to be an interesting first lesson back, of that much she was sure.

Potions clearly must be somewhat interesting this year. He didn't like the subject much, in fact, Peter hated potions. He was more of a fan of the moving around and practicing spells than sitting down and cutting plants. The mere thought of just doing that for a whole lesson made Peter want to turn around and walk back to the Slytherin Common Room. But he didn't. He needed to get his parents to believe he was doing well at school, even if that meant showing up for the dreadful potions class. He had opted to leave his robes on top of his bed, seeing as the crest on his sweater clearly told everyone he was in Slytherin House, and was now headed for the classroom.

The walk to Balan's class wasn't far, seeing as he had just been in the Common Room playing cards with a young blond kid. Peter opened the door and his eyes immediately settled on the people already there - Some girl in his house, a year or so younger than him; the professor, who seemed a bit less excited for Potions than Peter was; Victoria, the Head Girl. She was sitting all the way to the front of the class, and Peter wanted so desperately to take his usual spot at the very back row, but something was pulling at him. Maybe it was the way Effie had ignored him at the feast - something that was more common recently - or maybe it was Bella's words of encouragement when he told her he thought the Hufflepuff was attractive.

Mentally making a groaning noise, more to his own dramatic effect than to get any sort of attention, Peter walked up to the Head Girl. "Hey." He greeted her simply, a smile playing on his lips, so close to betraying him. Nodding to the seat next to her, he asked, "Mind if I.....?" His voice lingered for a few moments, unsure of she would even agree to having company. Company that had always been around but had also been too much of a coward even say hello. Bella had told him there was always enough time, so Peter was blindly taking that advice. After all, it's not like anyone could stop him.

Potions was certainly one of Lucy's favourite subjects. Her sister had excelled at it, and she aimed to do the same. It definitely helped that she found it completely interesting, and that it was such a broad subject… The range of potions one could learn to make, it was practically limitless. And there was always more to learn, and more to create as new things were discovered and different ingredients and different combinations tested. All both useful and enticing to know.

She had a rather short walk from the Slytherin common room to the potions classroom, so she hadn't had to worry about waking up particularly early, thankfully. Lucy was not a morning person, and anyone who knew her knew that.

She walked quietly down the hall to the classroom, and slipped in. It hadn't started yet, which she was happy about. She didn't like missing parts of classes. She found an empty seat and began to take out all of her equipment, ready to begin.

James had waited long enough, he decided, as far too many Slytherins slipped in to the room for his liking. The Head Girl was vastly outnumbered, but he decided not to dwell on such trivial things. Taking out his wand, James flicked it towards the door, allowing it to slam shut to attract everyone's attention and make sure they were awake.

"Good morning everyone." James started, checking everyone was paying attention before starting. "Welcome back for another year, for those who haven't yet memorised their timetable, my name is Professor Balan. This year, we are going to working on the knowledge your previous professors should have already taught you. Today we will be starting with the Invigoration Potion."

There was a pause, to let the slower students catch up with what he'd said, and then James continued. "So, lets not waste time, who here knows what the potion is used for? Ingredients? Colour? Anything at all." He asked, his tone not excited in the least, he wanted to press on, but theory was also a necessity.

As the room had filled up, Victoria had greeted each of her fellow students with a small smile. The moment the professor had pulled their attention back to the front, Victoria's eyes had been on him in a moment. He didn't seem like an overly friendly professor, but he wasn't horrible either. Perhaps he was the kind of professor who worked by pushing the limits of his students rather than carefully nurturing them through lessons.

Victoria didn't mind so long as he wasn't mean to others.

With the question posed, Victoria's hand shot in to the air, looking excitedly towards the professor. Once he'd called upon her, Victoria readied herself. "The Invigoration Potion, or Draught, is a potion used to boost the drinker's energy levels. The length of time for which this potion lasts depends on the potency of the potion as well as the amount taken, but can last from a few hours to a few days." She explained, checking the room for more hands. "Despite what many might think to be an energetic colour, the potion comes out a dull grey." She added with a smile, hoping that would give the professor the right impression.

It had seemed like ages from the question being asked to the first hand going up, though really, it was only a couple of seconds. James had listened throughout the torrent of information from the Head Girl, all of it was correct which showed that the other teachers had chosen wisely in a Head Girl.

"Correct, Miss Newbury." James responded to the witch when she finally finished her answer. He didn't mind a lengthy answer, but he would have preferred some of the other students speaking up. Never mind, there was still the rest of the term for an impression to be made. "Okay, so today we will be trying to make the potion, given that you are the older years, I will be expecting a higher quality from you all. Of course, I won't be expecting perfection, but I expect you to give this a good shot." He explained, moving to the board and flipping it over for the instructions he'd written earlier.

"You will work alone, when you are ready, you may begin." James explained, waving them off to make a start.

1. Put one flask of Pomegranate Juice in your cauldron and let it brew about 30 minutes on medium heat.
2. In the mean time, chop your Alihotsy Leaves, Asphodel Roots, and Daisy Roots. Once done, put the chopped Alihotsy Leaves and Asphodel Roots in another cauldron and set the cauldron on low heat.
3. Add the chopped Daisy Roots to your main cauldron and stir for some time. Then move over to the other cauldron and stir for a while there as well.
4. Remove your second cauldron from the heat and let it cool down. After that, add the stuff from your second cauldron to your main cauldron and stir for about 10 minutes. Then you should add the other flask of Pomegranate Juice, and let it brew for at least 40 minutes.
5. Add the final ingredient, the Lionfish Spine, stir for about 10 minutes till it gets a grey-ish color, and then take it off heat. Your Invigoration Draught is now ready.
