Muggle Studies (Lesson 2, All Years)

Daphne had a fun lesson prepared for her students today. She had made the desks disappear, and blankets were laid everywhere. She had set up a projector in the back corner, and had a pile of movies on her desk. She had several from different movie companies. There were a couple of Disney movies, Dream works, and Paramount. She wanted them to pick a company and research on how they used different styles of animation, how the company was started, who started it, it could basically be about anything they wanted it to be.

On the board she wrote in giant letters:

She loved watching movies as a child with her father and siblings. She knew the pureblood students wouldn't have gotten the chance too, so she figured that this would be the perfect moment. To let them watch with their friends! She set aside one movie from each company, Shrek from DreamWorks, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs from Disney, and Mean Girls from Paramount. She smiled as everything was set up. Now she just needed the students to arrive!

Having heard they had a new professor for Muggle Studies meant that Sebastian's interest in the subject lifted a little. But when he heard that the new professor was - to quote a friend of his - 'banging' he had decided that there was absolutely no way he was going to miss the class.

Whilst Sebastian might favour men in his likes, he would not pass up the opportunity to sit and listen to a beautiful woman for an hour, or so. So, with his bag packed with everything he would need, Sebastian headed down to the classroom on the first floor.

It seemed, as he opened the door, that Sebastian would be the first person to class, and as he took in the professor he knew his friend had been right. "Good morning." Sebastian greeted the witch, feeling his cheeks heat up a little bit when he realised he'd looked at the professor a little too long. Catching himself, Sebastian quickly moved to a blanket in the middle of the room, only then noting the board.

"Awesome." He breathed to himself, getting comfortable and waiting for others to join him.

Bennett didn't need Muggle Studies because half of his family didn't have magic. He knew most things already, if not all. But he was interested to know how most of the wizarding population viewed non-magic folk. His stepfather wasn't a wizard, so it would be fun to him through a different set of eyes. Of course, he didn't think he'd actually learn something from the class, but it looked good on his record so he figured it would be a good addition. He walked into the classroom not expecting much, let alone a female professor. Smiling awkwardly at her, because he could have sworn the professor had been a man last term, he stood by the door for a few seconds, his eyes glancing over the white words on the board.

Frowning, Bennett expected something more exciting. Like sports. But then again, the professor was female so he couldn't exactly expect that on the first day, if ever. Shrugging, dropped his book bag on the floor by the wall and went over to one of the blankets, pulling his legs up towards his chest, hugging them, as he waited for further instructions from the professor.

Whilst Finley did not need to study anything to do with Muggles, the Ravenclaw was still interested in seeing the lesson from the perspective of his magical peers. They'd had a professor before, but he hadn't lasted very long, so Finley wondered what this professor was going to offer.

Hurrying up to the classroom with Naomi at his side, Finley was more than a little confused to find the classroom devoid of desks, and instead lined with blankets. How odd, Finley thought to himself before he looked to the board. Then, it clicked why they would have blankets instead of desks.

Moving towards the front, Finley picked out two blankets, one for himself, and one for Naomi. They had a good view, Finley was sure of that as he got himself comfortable. Looking over to his best friend, his face showed that he was excited. "What f-film do you think w-we'll watch?" He asked the witch int he usual fashion they usually did when trying to second guess a lesson.

Naomi didn't really need Muggle Studies, given that half of her family was non-magical and she knew enough to pass as normal in front of her Muggle cousins, but she thought it would be interesting. Besides, Finley would be taking it and he knew even more about Muggles than she did, so she didn't feel bad about tagging along.

When the pair entered the room, Naomi noticed a few differences. There was a new professor, a pretty woman she had never seen before, and the floor was covered in blankets instead of desks. She blinked in confusion, before glancing at the board and suddenly understanding. She followed Finley to a pair of blankets, nodding to the professor as she went past.

Wrapping up in a green blanket patterned with darker green frogs and lily pads, sitting down facing the screen. "Mm, I don't know," she responded. "I'd guess something by Disney, probably. They're classics, and pretty easy to understand."

Why was this class on her schedule? She had no clue but agreed to keep it there until further notice. It would be an easy pass for the witch but she made the trek up the stairs anyways. Rubbing her temples, trying to calm the storm raging inside her mind from the holidays and what do with some of her studies, she entered the class room.

Upon entering and her eyes flashing to the board, she relaxed. It was movies and she was glad to be here now. Picking out comfy looking blanket, she sat herself down and closed her eyes. Yes this was nice. A good movie and a blanket in school full of magic. This is what she had pictured for school, not the amount of stress, but a muggle school with a couple of magical lessons. It was a complete curriculum change to her and it threw her off for a while, until she got used to it. Sitting bac she waited for the lesson to begin an excitement building up inside of her.

Lux took her time going to class, knowing she had a couple of minutes to spare. It wasn't like this was a difficult class where she would learn something completely foreign. Being a muggleborn and having spent most of her childhood surviving and navigating the merciless waters of a typical overpopulated, under-staffed orphanage, she had a pretty good view of the world. The only reason she chose to attend the class was to get an easy grade.

Entering the classroom, Lux took a sweeping glance of the room and concluded what they would be doing before her eyes caught sight of the single word on the board. Yay, movies! she thought sarcastically, holding back an eyeroll. She hated movies. They rarely ever gave a realistic accurate portrayal of the real world. It was all happily-ever-afters and all that mushy stuff Lux couldn't bear. The only thing that would make this class better was a good terrifying, bone-chilling horror film but she doubted that would ever happen. They would most likely watch something more family oriented. Ugh

Lux took a seat right at the back of the class, giving a nod to the teacher and crossing her arms.

Daphne smiled and got more nervous as more students started arriving. She was excited to see that a variety of ages and houses had signed up for the class. It didn't look like any more students where going to show up, so she started to talk, "Hello, welcome to Muggle studies! I'm Professor Moon, and today we are going to learn about movies. As some of you may know, I'm not sure which of you are pureblood or muggleborn, but movies come in a variety of styles. After today's lesson, I want you to write me a 1000 word essay. You can pick which genre you want to write about, which company, and I want background information about the company as well. You can go into as much detail as you want. You can list different movies and compare them, you can compare the animation styles, the actors they used, anything."

She paused for dramatic effect. She continued, "Here on the table, I have movies from different companies, and books over here on them that I checked out from the library. I would like them back if you want to use them for research. Today we are going to watch one of my personal favorites from the Disney category, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. It's the first Disney movie that Walt Disney ever made. It was made in 1937, and the earliest animation called Cel animation. These are things you can include in your essay. But for now, let's not worry about that. Let's watch a movie!"

Daphne went to the very back of the room so she could get a good view, and sat down on one of the empty blankets. She smiled as the opening credits played, and the first scene of her favorite childhood movie erupted on the screen. She hummed along to the songs. This was going to be a fun class, and she was glad that she had chosen to come to Hogwarts. It was a good decision.
