| One shot centred around May 2010. I do not own the song, it is a great piece by Skillet - Don't Wake Me. Enjoy
Don't Wake Me I went to bed I was thinking about you Ain't the same since I'm living without you All the memories are getting colder All the things that I wanna do over Went to bed I was thinking about you I wanna talk and laugh like we used to When I see you in my dreams at night It's so real but it's in my mind
Jake woke in the middle of the night, a soft groan escaping his lips as he realized the last couple of hours had been nothing more than a dream. Azalea led sleeping soundly by his side with her head resting gently on his chest, the steady rhythm of her breathing the only method of calm that would work as he woke from yet another dream of Victoria. Things were back to normal in the real world, Jake was back to being himself and Azalea was still at his side.
But he still missed Victoria, though it only showed in his dreams nowadays.
And now I guess This is as good as it gets
“Jake, I swear to Merlin if you don’t come and help me now, I am not helping you with your summer assignment again!” Victoria said in a playful huff as she watched her older brother lark around in the ford. He’d left the picnic basket just out of her reach and the eleven year old was struggling to get a hold on it enough to bring it close to her.
“Alright, alright!” Jake returned with a cheeky grin as he hurried to his sister’s side to help her with the picnic. The boy laughed when she cowered away from the cool water despite the August heat around them. Once the basket was in a better position for her, Jake sat down on his towel beside her, smiling warmly as she unpacked the food for the pair of them and sharing it out. The eleven year old knew exactly what she was doing as Jake tucked in to the sandwiches they’d prepared together earlier.
“Our little secret, eh Jake?” Victoria asked, motioning to the ford around them and the time they spent together all summer. Even at eleven she understood the implications of an older brother being too attached to his little sister. It wasn’t cool.
“Our little secret.” Jake replied with a nod, leaning in and kissing her forehead.
Don't wake me 'Cause I don't wanna leave this dream Don't wake me 'Cause I never seem to stay asleep enough When it's you I'm dreaming of I don't wanna wake up
“How about this one?” Victoria asked, holding up a dress that didn’t look anything like Azalea would wear. Too… pink. Jake rolled his eyes and shook his head at his sister for being so silly about even suggesting such a dress for his girlfriend. “Oh, not for Azalea! For me!” The girl quickly amended, not realizing Jake would take things quite so literally.
“I think it looks beautiful, though there are other colours, Vic!” Jake replied, earning himself a very reproachful look from the younger of the siblings. “Oh, come on, you know your wardrobe is fit to bursting with pink! It’s scary!” A pair of tights flew in Jake’s direction which he caught effortlessly in his left hand. Both Newbury’s broke out in to laughter at the scene and went back to trying to find something for Azalea’s birthday.
I went to bed I was thinking about you And how it felt when I finally found you It's like a movie playing over in my head Don't wanna look 'cause i know how it ends All the words that I said that I wouldn't say All the promises I made that I wouldn't break It's last call, last song, last dance 'Cause I can't get you back, can't get a second chance
“Jake! Jake!” The wheelchair only just managed to stay on its wheels as Victoria hurtled around the corner after him on his morning run. How the young Wormwood knew where he was going to be, or why he was even at the school anymore was beyond the boy as he looked down at the older version of his sister, just about recognizable to him.
“What’s up, Vic?” Jake asked casually, stopping to save her from being so reckless in her wheelchair. Azalea had enhanced it years ago now, and still the boy refused to trust it. There were too many possibilities to be going on with, and Victoria’s safety was imperative. The boy waited for her to continue, taking in the almost fixed grin on her face.
“Humphrey asked me to the ball! But… but not as friends this year! He asked me to go as his girlfriend!” Victoria explained breathlessly, her smile growing even more as she looked up to her brother for approval. “Isn’t that great? Azalea has been telling me for ages that it was going to happen, I never believed her, but…” The girl broke off as Jake pulled her in to a hug, letting her know silently that he was pleased for her. Because he was, Humphrey was a great guy.
And now, I guess This is as good as it gets
Jake sat next to Victoria in the library, her eyes were fixed on her book, and his own fixed on his essay. Silence surrounded the pair as they worked, though it wasn’t uncomfortable. They were both busy with their work, too intent on getting done. Victoria had been stuck earlier, turning the book around to Jake and asking him to explain a complex piece of magic that no fourth year should be attempting. Still, the boy had helped her through it the best he could, explaining just how to do it and all the implications of actually doing it.
It was how they’d always worked, showing and explaining spells in different manners to make sure she understood. Professor Evans continued to tell Jake just how good Victoria was doing. The brightest witch of her age had been a popular comment by the Headmistress, something that made Jake’s chest swell each time he heard it.
His Victoria – the smartest witch of her age.
Don't wake me 'Cause I don't wanna leave this dream Don't wake me 'Cause I never seem to stay asleep enough When it's you I'm dreaming of I don't wanna wake up Don't wake me We're together just you and me Don't wake me 'Cause we're happy like we used to be I know I've gotta let you go But I don't wanna be alone.
The grounds of Salem were stifling hot that summer. Jake had offered to take Victoria off of Chloe’s hands for a couple of hours, telling her they’d merely be going in to the grounds and sit around relaxing. “You don’t think she’ll notice, do you Jake?” Victoria’s voice came from below him and Jake chuckled softly at his sister’s worrying.
“You’re the one who wanted to do this!” The man pointed out as they neared the lake. “You aren’t going to back out now, are you? Cost me a bomb to get such an extravagant swim suit!” Jake teased, making the angelic sound of Victoria’s laughter ring all around them.
“No, you’re right. I haven’t been in ages… And, well, you’re more than capable.” Victoria replied, though the worry was quite clear in her voice as he pulled up her chair by the furthest shore of the lake. As he knelt in front of his little sister, Jake took her hands softly in his and gave them a reassuring squeeze.
“You’re going to be fine, I promise.” He told her, before lifting her up enough for her to slide her trousers off to reveal the disgustingly pink swimsuit. “Though, I might die of girl overload if you don’t tame the pink soon!” He teased, hoisting her out of her chair and in to the water.
She’d wanted to swim for ages, their mother being too protective had firmly said no because of all the problems, but Jake knew his little sister would be okay. He would never let anything happen to Victoria. Not in his wildest of dreams.
These dreams of you keep on growing stronger It ain't a lot but it's all I have Nothing to do but keep sleeping longer Don't wanna stop cause I want you back
“Student of the year goes to… Victoria Newbury!” Professor Evans called over the crowd of parents and siblings alike. Azalea had been sat beside him before they’d both stood up cheering, clapping and in Jake’s case whistling their appreciation for the award being handed to his little sister. The grin on Jake’s face could have lit up the whole room, though it was bested by the girl who wheeled up to the front of the room.
The eighteen year old Victoria accepted the award graciously from Professor Evans before turning her attention to the crowd, or more specifically, Jake. The girl put her thumb up to her brother, her grin never faltering as Chloe navigated them both off of the stage.
Azalea’s hand rested on his arm to pull him back down in to his seat, but even though Professor Evans moved on to other awards, Jake remained grinning. The perfect picture of a proud brother.
“You know if you wait much longer, she’s going to think you don’t want to, right?” Victoria asked, looking up at Jake with a raised eyebrow as he busied himself with work. There was so much to do and never enough time. The small house that he now called home with Azalea had been turned upside down by the man as he tried to find what he’d done with an important piece of work.
“I know, I know.” Jake muttered, scribbling notes down on the page without really acknowledging Victoria’s words. There was just too much to do. Things like that could wait, Jake was almost certain of it. Azalea was happy, so why did they need to sign a piece of paper?
“Jake, come on, almost everyone you were at school with has gotten married by now. I mean, I know you wanted to wait, but you’ve been together for ten year now!” Victoria said huffily. “I want my chance at being maid of honour! Or, at least a bridesmaid!” She added, trying to lighten the mood of the situation as Jake led his pen down and looked at her.
“Waited too long, huh?” Jake asked, not really sure on how all of this really worked.
“A little.”
“Think she wants to though?”
“Jake!” Victoria whined, throwing a curled up piece of paper at her brother’s head for being such an idiot in respect to women.
“Alright, alright, I’ll look in to it!”
“We’re going shopping.”
“When?”
“Now.”
I went to bed I was thinking about you ‘Cause I don’t wanna leave this dream It ain’t the same since I’m living without you. ‘Cause I never seem to stay asleep enough I know I’ve gotta let you go But I don’t wanna wake up.
The scene played out before him once more. A scene that he’d never witnessed himself, but a scene that felt like he’d been there regardless. The snow clung to the mountain side, some areas as precarious as the women who liked to drink at the Devil. As she travelled up higher, the determination on Victoria’s face increased in intensity. She was pushing the limits of the chair because she had to get up the top of the mountain and back down before Jake would even notice.
The chair handled each corner like a soft bend rather than the deadly twists they really were. Jake could only be stuck watching as she skidded around the next corner, and the next. Each moment forced the inevitable to come true. Jake knew what was coming, but he never had the strength to wake himself up. Each time he would see it and believe there was a different ending.
Each time he hoped there wasn’t that patch of ice.
Hoped there was no skid off the edge.
Hoped Victoria would never fall from the side of the cliff.
But he would always wake up in a cold sweat, his breathing erratic as what was his little sister crashed in to the floor. His dreams brought him back to reality with a jar, reaffirming the truth of it all as he waited for his body to calm back down enough to go to sleep. Praying that Azalea never noticed, hoping he would lose the dreams soon.
The boy leant down, kissing Azalea’s forehead once he’d confirmed she was asleep. That they were both going to be okay. A soft smile hinted on her lips as she snuggled closer with a small contented sigh. The Head Boy waited a few more moments to make sure she was definitely asleep. The girl was all he ever needed, much more than he deserved. His world, personified. The boy had come to realize this now, and he was never letting her go. He settled back down beside her, his voice dropping to no more than a whisper.
“I love you, Azalea Harrington." ________________________________________________~ Auror ~ Profile ~ DADA Professor ~ ~ In a Relationship ~ 36 ~ Father ~ 6' ~ American Accent ~

| Graduation Party 2009/10 School Year
As exams threatened to take the last of the sanity from both the O.W.L. and N.E.W.T. students, Jake was starting to realise just how little time he had left at school. With Azalea. It increasingly made him aware that he was almost permanently worried about what he was doing in comparison to the time he was spending with his girlfriend. Things were going to be okay, he’d told himself as he hurried back from his final exam. Professor Finn had insisted on choosing the spell Jake had had the most difficulty with to access him in his Defensive Magic exam. He’d known beforehand, of course, and he’d been practicing relentlessly to close off his mind. For the first time in the exam, Jake had felt nervous for an exam. The whole thing was causing his head to spin around – but as Professor Finn called him forward, the boy slowly relaxed himself and closed his eyes. Not thinking, not seeing.Nothing.Jake only opened his eyes again when he felt someone squeeze his shoulder. The Head Boy looked up to see Professor Finn stood next to him, pride covering her face as she looked at him. “Well done,” She whispered, sending him off as she called out the next student to come and take a shot. Jake had merely disappeared, heading straight back to the common room. Even if he’d managed to keep the professor out, it was draining on his system. But the last exam was gone now. He had no lessons for the last couple of days of term. Just time. Time to say goodbye, time to make sure he knew where all his friends were going to be. One last time to see all the places he probably wouldn’t again. To absorb all the memories that would last him a life time, because Salem was soon to be his past, the world his future.Even if the most important person was still here, he’d still be moving on, moving away. But it was a year. Little could change in a year…***
The music pumped around the room – Professor Evans had cleared out the Dining Hall for the Seventh Years as was tradition and the Head Boy had set to work with his selected team to redesign the room. Usually the Head Girl was there too, but with Azalea only being in her Sixth Year it was inappropriate for her to be involved. Or so most Seventh Years had insisted, Jake would honestly have liked her to be by his side, but he didn’t push the argument. But each student had managed to add their own novelties to the Graduation Party. The Nightshades had managed to smuggle in the alcohol. The Belladonnas had supplied the room with its music and the lighting for the makeshift dance floor. And in true Wormwood fashion, they had set out the chairs and home comforts as if you may be interested in sitting down all night.Still, as the Head Boy wove between the guests, who all looked to be having a great time, he could tell that the night was going to be good. “Jake, you haven’t got a drink in your hand, buddy!” Mike called, pushing a glass in to his hand as the boy continued to talk to the two blonde haired girls in front of him. Amelia and Molly were moving on to the Ministry, it seemed as they continued to talk. Jake remained vague in his new job, because there were some things he wanted in life, and right now being leeched by women was not one of them.Mike on the other hand…“So, did Jake tell you he’s playing for the Moose Jaw Meteorites next year?” The Belladonna asked, letting out a small groan afterwards where Jake’s fist collided with his arm. “What was that for?” Mike added, looking to Jake with confusion.“The Canadian Quidditch team?” Molly asked, her eyes growing wide at the prospect. “Aren’t they one of the best teams in the world at present?”Jake sighed as Mike grinned beside him. Apparently being the best friend of a new celebrity meant you could tell everything, but Jake nodded to the girls. “Yes, I’m joining the Meteorites.” He told the girls as Mike looked at him in the same manner they had maybe a year ago in the company of girls. Mike wanted one, but he needed Jake to get rid of the other. The boy rolled his eyes at his best friend, but took up the place of wingman as he struck up conversation with Amelia.Five minutes later, Mike and Molly had gone.Of all the things Jake knew about himself, the ability to wrap so many girls around his finger had always come naturally. Amelia held no differences as she latched on to every question and without little regard for Jake’s prominent relationship, she was trying to flirt with him too. It was one of the many reasons he’d only told Mike and Azalea of his job starting in August. If it got out… He just couldn’t do that to Azalea. As the conversation turned yet again away from meaningful conversation to subtle hints that she was going to be alone tonight, another blonde caught Jake’s eyes. Catherine. Perhaps he might have missed the girl over the last few months, it was odd really. They’d shared a lot of firsts together, grown up together. Even if Jake had never seen her for more than a sexual exploit, she was still a friend first and foremost.“Give me a minute, yeah, Amelia?” Jake told the Wormwood girl, excusing himself as he started to move towards the Belladonna girl.“Oh sure, play the life of big shot now! Ditching one girl for another!” Amelia called after him, her tone uncertain in whether she was really annoyed or amused by the boy’s antics. Jake honestly didn’t care if he’d annoyed her, the whole school knew where his loyalties lay. That girl wasn’t here. But, he had to talk to Catherine before he left Salem. Had to make sure things were still…“Jake!” Catherine exclaimed with a warm smile, pulling him in to a hug and brushing her lips against his cheek. “I’ve been looking everywhere for you all night! Thought you were avoiding me!” She teased as she let go of him, taking in his formal attire. “Looking good this evening too!” She added, causing them both to laugh.“I’ve been busy, not av-““Ah, busy. Getting Mike a girl to sleep with is not busy, Jake!” She told him sternly before laughing softly once more. Her smile was infectious, Jake found as he smiled back at her shaking his head at her statement.“In fairness, I was simply talking to Amelia and Molly about work, no intention of getting Mike anything. And then he just popped up. Surely you’ve noticed he does that a lot when I have a crowd of girls around me?” He asked, and Catherine conceded the point with a single nod. The Head Boy closed his eyes momentarily, steadying himself as he felt the alcohol running through his system, how long had it been since he’d last drunk? “Can I talk to you, outside?” He asked softly as he opened his eyes again. The confusion in the girls eyes was apparent before she nodded, taking his arm as he led her out through the make shift doors to the lawn outside. There were a few couples around and about that were doing things… Jake looked away, not wanting to know who was getting off with who in a last ditch chance in goodbye. The Head Boy led Catherine away from the main group of people before he spoke again.“Catherine, I just wanted to say… that… well, I guess I wanted to say thank you.” Jake told her very softly, avoiding her eyes because he wasn’t even sure where this was coming from anymore. “For being there throughout the years. I know Mike’s been around too, he probably always will be-““Jake, I’m not going anywhere either. You know that?” Catherine asked, reaching up to wipe away the stray tear that had surfaced from seemingly nowhere. “I know… I know Azalea and I never really got on, but I’m going to be here still. I’m glad you found that one girl who can make you happy.”Some things you expect from Catherine, other things just don’t sound right. Catherine Wright was never one to concede something she’d always deemed hers. But now… “You’ll write?” Jake asked weakly, because even if they hadn’t really spoken in months the boy needed all his friends still. Catherine nodded her reply to him, because even if people thought she was a heartless bitch, there were some people who just got under that skin and let you be yourself.Without another word, Jake pulled Catherine in to a hug. Because even if he had Azalea, even if Catherine wasn’t his anymore, even if he shouldn’t admit it, the girl was a comfort to him. The Belladonna girl had pulled the third year from his shell and made him the man he was today. “Thank you.” He whispered in to her hair, as he held her close for what he deemed to be the last time. Everyone knew how things went once you left the school. People promised to write and never did.“You know… that’s the first time you ever held me in public, Jake?” Catherine told him as she pulled away from him to look up in to his eyes. The Head Boy chuckled softly, placing a soft kiss on her forehead.“You would count these things, wouldn’t you?” He asked jokingly, as he finally let her go.“Only because what I told you two years ago still stands now, Newbury.” Catherine told him, a slight blush creeping in to her cheeks as she turned to leave before checking her step and turning back around. “I think it always will, too. Azalea is a lucky girl…” She stated in no more than a whisper as she finally made up her mind, tip toeing to reach his lips as she very carefully pressed her lips to his.“Look after her, Jake.” She whispered against his lips, their eyes locking for a moment as she showed him the sincerity of her words.Of all the things Jake would expect from Catherine, such sincerity was not one. The act of true kindness that she’d left with was disorientating, how could she feel one thing but tell him to do something that would surely…Hurt her?The Head Boy came back from his reverie to catch her white dress slip back in to the party. He’d never realised until today, that maybe Victoria had never been the only one who needed him. No, at least two more girls needed him right now. Two girls put him as important in their lives and it was his place to fulfil that role. There had to be a way in which he could live up to it, make sure both girls knew they were important to him too…But Azalea…The boy downed the rest of his drink, putting it on a nearby table before turning his back on the party and heading towards the front doors to the castle. He couldn’t party when the life of it wasn’t there. Tradition stated the Head Boy and Girl were supposed to party their last night’s away. Together. He’d failed on that one promise he’d always made to Azalea. Jake had forgotten the truly important part of the Graduation Party. It wasn’t about getting drunk, it wasn’t about reminiscing. Graduation Parties were for spending with the ones you loved, for showing them the future, telling them that no matter what anyone else might think, you were going to be there for them.As he snuck back in to their common room, Jake found it deserted. It was perhaps past two in the morning by now, likely she’d be fast asleep. “Jake..?” Azalea called sleepily, rolling over as he moved to his side of the bed and removing his shirt and trousers.“I’m here.” He replied softly, pulling the covers down enough for him to get in as she instinctively moved to cuddle in to him, her head on his chest. Only when her breathing relaxed back down to a slow rhythm did Jake feel himself relax, his arms pulling her closer to his body. “I missed you.” Jake whispered softly through the darkness, feeling the tears welling up at the prospect of what was going to happen in a couple of days. From below, a sleepy comment that sounded something like “I missed you too” came to his ears in Azalea’s voice. Whether she was still awake, he didn’t know, but seeing as the room fell silent once more he guessed he already knew the answer. The Head Boy reached up to his eyes, brushing the tears away from his eyes, no good was going to come of them, and he knew that. He knew a lot of things right now, and the scariest wouldn’t go away. They just weren’t going to cope. Not without each other…________________________________________________~ Auror ~ Profile ~ DADA Professor ~ ~ In a Relationship ~ 36 ~ Father ~ 6' ~ American Accent ~
