| Pacing along the edge of the Black Lake, Gavin attempted to swallow back the fear and nervousness he was dealing with. He knew that this was a pretty risky first lesson, but he had been assured that all the students were very capable. Besides the kids he'd be teaching today were at most four years younger than him, and he'd done much more dangerous things. He attempted to rationalize this for himself, keeping in mind that these students were the creme de la creme. All the ones that had chosen to pursue this course after their OWL exams. 'Besides they aren't going into the lake alone I'll be right there with them.' He tried to calm down and gain his composure before the students began to show.
As it was he was feeling very out of a professional element. Instead of the teacher's robes he'd been given Gavin was wearing a pair of swim trunks and a tank top. He'd posted a notice on the class topic board that the class for the upper year students would be held out by the lake and that a set of swim wear would be conducive to the lesson. While waiting for the students to arrive he checked to make sure the large glass tank he'd requested was up to specifications. The things he planned on putting in there probably wouldn't take too kindly to being caged up. |

| Victoria, being the way she was, hadn't given up any subject for her N.E.W.T.S. It was much too hard a decision to make, and she simply couldn't let any of her professors down (and a couple had sought her out to ask her to stay on, so how could she say no?). Allegra had said she was mad when she saw the piles of homework that Victoria had to do, but the Head Girl had simply grinned and said she knew. Jake had been much the same, though she thought she'd seen a look of worry...
But she wasn't thinking about that as she skipped down to Care of Magical Creatures. No, today she was more excited than ever because not only was she going to be with some animals of outstanding interest, but she was also going to see Gavin.
Victoria really couldn't remember the last time she'd seen the red head, but she knew she was very excited for it.
Which was precisely why she was a good five minutes earlier than normal, her smile brighter than the sun that morning (though in winter that wasn't so hard). Seeing Gavin pacing, Victoria purposefully hurried up her skip, bouncing up to his side and wrapping her arms around the older man. Gavin towered over her five foot tall structure, but Victoria didn't care.
"It's so good to see you!" Victoria greeted her friend, pulling away a little to smile up at the man before her. "You're nervous... Don't be! You're going to do amazing!" Victoria told him, motioning to his pacing that had been happening. "Though, I will say that you picked the coldest month to go swimming in the lake!" Victoria joked softly, motioning to the small amount of snow settled on the ground. "But, I'm sure everyone knows heating charms!" She added with a big grin to reassure Gavin.
Victoria's swimwear had already been modified for the cold, and she was looking forward to this, a lot. ________________________________________________

| After seeing the note for bringing swimwear, Joshua hadn't been overly fond on the idea of what they might be doing this lesson. The middle of winter and swimming? Well, it was a sure fire way to catch a cold, he supposed. Though, a quick trip to the potions lab, or even a Firewhiskey would soon sort that out, he supposed.
The Slytherin Prefect made no effort to get down to the class on time, instead ambling down with his bag. He hadn't been sure what else they would need, but a drying charm would get rid of any water they were going to be getting in to.
On arrival at the lake, it seemed Josh had just missed some display of affection he didn't care to acknowledge and simply stood silently waiting for instructions on what they were going to be doing. No acknowledgement of the professor, just waiting. |

| Gavin felt Victoria's hug before he actually saw her and a great big smile crossed his face as picked the younger girl up and spun her around with a hug. It probably wasn't appropriate professor behavior, but since there wasn't anyone else around yet Gavin was allowing himself to be a little more lax. "It's good to see you too princess." He set her down and rubbed the back of his neck beaming a bit at her praise and attempts to stoke his confidence. "Well at least one of us has confidence in me."
As the next student arrived Gavin tried to regain his composure and put on a professional demeanor. Taking a deep breath he decided to go ahead with the class introduction. "Morning students, I'm Gavin Pierce, the new Professor for this course. I'm not sure what your last professor was like, but I'm very much a hands-on research type of guy. The best way to learn about something is to interact with it."
Gesturing at the lake behind him he offered a smile at his students, "As you can tell we're gonna be working with a creature today that resides in the Black Lake. Selkies. Now, what can you guys tell me about them?" |

| In all honesty Louise probably should have given this lesson a miss but she wanted some extra grades this year, after a not so great score last year. Not for her mind anyways. She didn't have any swimwear for one and the other she couldn't swim, her fear of deep water was somewhat of a big thing that she really didn't want to address right now. So she brought notebooks and a text book hoping she'd be able to just make notes and go with theory this lesson. Professor was on her shoulder as she approached the lake, he could sense her unease and was being a good familiar and keeping an eye on his mistress.
She could see not many people had arrived so she didn't feel too nervous about approaching the professor, offering a tight smile as she listened to his greeting. She gave the lake a brief glance and shuddered. This was a bad idea, maybe she could sneak away and hand in an essay in her off time. She bottled out of asking for another assignment and just kept her distance from the water. |

| Being spun by Gavin was kind of electrifying if she was honest. Gavin was something of a big cuddly bear if you asked Victoria, and after knowing the man for so long, he'd fulfilled the duty of giving her big hugs for quite some time. And teddies. Victoria still kept the teddy from Gavin that she'd received after her operation with her now, to remind her of home, and make her feel safe when Allegra wasn't around. The notion of being called 'princess' made Victoria blush a little, and it probably always would.
And the comment on her being confident in him made Victoria grin. "Of course I am!" Victoria insisted with a grin in the man's direction. As Josh turned up to the class, Victoria gave him a smile - not having any reason to dislike the Slytherin. It seemed like Gavin was ready to start too, and the moment he did, Victoria's attention was right on him, listening attentively.
Victoria waited to see if anyone else had an answer before raising her hand - a little more tentatively than normal because she didn't wish to let Gavin down. When she was called upon, Victoria spoke with as much confidence as she could, though she couldn't remember if she was confusing her mythical creatures. "I believe they are the creatures that appear as seals when in the sea, or water, and when they come to land they can turn in to humans." Victoria answered, looking to Gavin to see if she was in fact correct in her answer. ________________________________________________

| Seeing the next student arrive bolstered Gavin's confidence just a bit, and he gave the girl a wave of acknowledgement. From her attire he assumed that she wouldn't be joining him on the dive, which was fine by him. It had been an optional hands on component anyhow, he knew that some people preferred their book learning and he was prepared to cater to that need. A light hearted smile played on his face as Victoria answered the question.
"Very good answer Miss Newbury, but it was a bit of a trick question. What you just described was a muggle myth about selkies, and while there may or not be some truth to that statement that's not what we're studying." He looked between the other students. "Let me rephrase the question in a more straight forward manner. Who here knows the difference between cold water and warm water merfolk?" |

| As the silence drew out on the question of the professor, Josh cocked an eyebrow at his fellow Slytherin for not knowing the answer before clearing his throat. "The main difference is in their appearance." Josh responded, though he wasn't anywhere near finished with his answer, that was for sure. "The merfolk of warmer waters are said to be much more beautiful creatures, most likely the ones who draw idiot sailors fromt their boats.
"Whilst the merfolk living in colder waters, such as the ones we're likely to find in this lake, are ugly." Josh concluded, not caring for anyone's feelings - especially those of a beast. Josh had seen both types before on one of the forced family holidays. It had been nothing of interest, but that was neither here nor there.
Folding his arms across his chest, Josh waited for further instructions. The sooner this was over, the better, in his mind. |

| Merfolk? Of course it was. Louise was still picturing the little mermaid style creature in her head when Josh gave an answer after looking at her for, well she wasn't sure but she figured he was waiting to see if she'd answer, too bad. It wasn't something she intentionally looked up, she only took the class as something extra to do along with her regular studies. She couldn't remember how many times she'd changed classes over the years, once it was allowed of course.
Anything to do with the sea or lakes, or underwater in general wasn't particularly interesting to her, heck she didn't even like boat rides. Not that she'd been on many, only the one by her count, which was arriving as a first year. She hoped to never repeat that experience, curled up on the floor of the boat and whimpering like a kicked puppy, thankfully she had the boat to herself and it was dark enough that none of the other students noticed her less than dignified entrance.
She snapped her attention to Josh, trying to look like she was paying attention, offering a thankful smile then returning her gaze to the professor. Her own little Professor was starting to fidget on her shoulder, making a small squeak, she looked at the squirrel to see why and saw his paw was stuck in her hair. Again. She reached up awkwardly and untangled his tiny claws from her hair and flicked it over her shoulder out of the way and the squirrel chirped before turning about twice then flopping over her shoulder looking quite bored. |
