Things were... calming down, you could say, at the Ministry, which allowed Jake to grab a little more sleep, and a little more family time. However, with September back, it meant that Jake was back at the school, which brought the time he'd gained back down once again. He'd never begrudge his students that, though, they were important, but the first lesson of the year was one he'd left too little time to plan.

Freezing Spell

Jake had written up the spell on the board, and cleared the room of desks and chairs (as normal) before setting himself on top of his desk, ready for the arrival of his students. Hopefully they would be forgiving of his lack of imagination for this lesson, but Jake knew he would work hard enough to make it memorable no matter what. Checking his watch, it was only a few moments before the students would be arriving.

Primrose had left the Great Hall with enough spare time to get her things from the Gryffindor Common Room and to make her way towards DADA. It was her favourite subject at Hogwarts and probably the one she excelled in the most. She had actually found really early on that she had the power to be able to make the spells stronger than they originally were.

It hadn't actually taken her long to find her way to the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom and when she did step in she beamed at Jake and waved her hand. "Good Morning Professor Newbury!" She said as she hobbled through the classroom towards her preferred space in the classroom which was near the front of the room but towards the side where no-one would actually bother her too much. "How are you today?"

She shrugged her bag off and placed it away from the commotion that would soon enter the classroom, no doubt the people who would come would just jostle stuff about and Prim would be left with no place to put her bag down anywhere.

Carlotta was hoping that this lesson of DADA wasn't difficult. She wasn't very good when it came to spell casting- her strengths were in potions and theory, not with being all powerful at spell casting, sadly. It was something that she had been trying to improve- but unfortunately, to no avail. She could certainly manage simple disarming spells, just not spells that required a tonne of skill. Yes, this year she had vowed to try and make herself better at it.

Naturally, she was relieved upon walking into the classroom and seeing Freezing Spell on the board. It didn't seem overly complicated, thankfully.

"Professor," she greeted with a grin "Have a good holiday?" she asked, moving into the room and placing her bag down near the wall, before making her way more to the centre of the cleared room, waiting patiently for other students to arrive.

Defence Against the Dark Arts was a pretty neat class. And being taught by an Auror? That was super cool. Theo was super in awe of their professor - who was apparently a dad, too - for his jobs. Theo didn't think he'd be cut out for being an Auror, though, but it was a cool job, no less.

Stepping in to the room, Theo took in the two girls already there, somewhat annoyed that they were quite a bit older than him. This was going to be a difficult lesson if he had to try and combat them! But, he smiled at them warmly, because he was polite, and his mum would kick his backside if he was anything less. "Hi!" He greeted the two of them, not expecting a response before turning to the professor.

"Hey Professor Jake! I mean, Jake! How was your summer? How's Professor Newbury?" Theo asked, looking hopeful at a small snippet of conversation. Jake had a baby the same age as Theo's little sister, Emélie which meant a few play dates had been arranged between the families.

Ahhh, spell-casting. Eli had been waiting for this exact class. It seemed really super cool, and plus, no books. All spells at least that's what he gathered when he walked into the classroom to see that there were no chairs or desks there. He simply saw Freezing Spell written on the board behind the teacher.

A few others, including his sister, had already arrived, greeting Professor Newbury. He simply dropped his bag (without much care, it would seem) to the floor "Ahh. freezing-spell. Perfect for a hot summer's day," he announced "Kind of like today? Great! You know, I was under the impression there was a swimming pool here, hidden somewhere. Have to say, disappointed I haven't found it yet," he sighed dramatically "Admittedly, I've only been here a few days, so there's still time," he added with a grin- hoping that the people in this classroom understood jokes a bit more than the people in the Herbology class.

Another year, another lesson, another dull moment within the school. Christopher wasn't fond of school, truth be told. He was good at getting the grades he was expected to achieve, but he much preferred to be playing sports. Muggle and Magical alike. Christopher had something positive to think about, though, the fact he was now betrothed to the girl he liked more than a lot, it made school easier.

However, Keona and he rarely got time to be in class together, which was quite annoying.

Sighing as he pushed the door open to Defence Against the Dark Arts, Christopher took in those already there with little and less interest. Nobody he really spoke to, so no-one to make a beeline towards. "Morning, Professor." Christopher greeted the professor, dropping his bag at the edge of the room and leaning against the wall. Waiting for the lesson to begin.

After, quite honestly, a difficult summer, Emily was glad to be back. Back home - where she wasn't near enough a full-time carer for four teenage girls, and a thirty five year old woman. Back to her own life - her independence, what freedom she liked to think she had. Back to carrying that little notebook around with her wherever she went, tucked neatly inside her robes for no-one to know about. Part of her felt bad, for being so relieved - it wasn't her mother's fault. It wasn't her sisters' fault. There was one person she blamed for it all, but even feeling his name on the edge of her tongue wasn't worth it.

"Morning, Professor," the blonde smiled brightly as she waved at her teacher. Probably one of her favourites, actually; Professor Newbury didn't just teach the course material, he made it enjoyable. That was rare to come across, and Emily really appreciated that. Settling her bag down at the side of the room, neatly out of the way, she joined the forming cluster of students, hands held neatly behind her back. It was nice, for once, to see that she wasn't one of the 'youngest' anymore. "Morning, rest of you," she commented a little quieter, taking in the writing on the board as she waited.

PostSubject: Re: Defence Against the Dark Arts - Lesson One (All Years)   Defence Against the Dark Arts - Lesson One (All Years) EmptySun Jan 15, 2017 9:29 am

Jake had just checked his watch once more when his first student entered the room. Looking up to see a Gryffindor witch - Primrose - Jake offered the witch a smile as she greeted him. "Good morning!" Jake replied to the witch as she moved (uncomfortably) across the room. Jake didn't like to pry, of course, but he'd checked with the Headmaster and Prim's records as to why she limped. He'd left it at that, though, not wishing to molly-coddle any of his students. "I'm very well, thank you, and yourself?" Jake replied, though his attention was pulled from the Gryffindor by the next couple of students that arrived.

"Good morning, Carlotta, Theo!" Jake replied to her greeting, before considering her question. Honestly, Jake did not like to bring his other job to the school, so he went with the family route. "It was very good, thank you. I was able to spend a lot of time with my wife and children, which is always great!" Jake responded, the smile on his lips showing how much those words were meant from the heart. "I hope you had a good holiday too!" Jake added to them both.

"Professor Newbury is very well, thank you." He added to Theo.

The next student seemed more focused on the lesson. Or, kind of, and Jake let him speak his mind for a few moments before concocting a reply. "I'm glad you approve, Mr...?" Jake replied, leaving the sentence open ended so that the new student could introduce himself. "A swimming pool?" Jake asked, frowning for a few moments. "You might mean the Prefect's Bathroom?" He asked, though he wasn't completely familiar with the school, having gone to the American school. "If you find it, you will have to let me know!" He added, because there was no harm in exploring.

The last couple of students Jake simply echoed their 'good morning' with a smile. Not everyone was intensely talkative, but he didn't mind that.

"Right, I think this is a good time to begin with the lesson. Welcome back everyone that I've taught before, hello to those of you that are new. As always, I'd like to remind you that I'm not expecting perfection in the room, just a good effort to do well. If you're struggling, my door is always open!" Jake explained, getting the more admin points done and out of the way.

"So, as some of you may have noticed from the board, we will today be looking at the Freezing Spell. A good spell, which we can have a lot of fun with. Now, aside from freezing water, etc, can anyone tell me what they know of the spell? Any time this might be considered more useful than that of a prank spell? There's no single right answer here, so please, have a go!" Jake encouraged, looking around the faces hopefully.

Being late had become a large part of Severine's personality so much so that she refused to be on time to anything. Being fashionable late was fun, everyone stared at you meaning she got even more attention and since she was now a lot older and hotter, she wanted all the attention on her. She wanted boys to drool over her and girls to be jealous over her. Of course she wasn't interested in the boys pursuing her but she thought it'd be fun to have someone crush on her and then be denied.

The class had already begun by the time Severine threw open the door and entered. However she was just in time to hear the introduction and question and since no one else was answering and seemed younger, she spoke up. "You can use it to put out a fire." She smirked a bit and leaned against the wall, bag to her side as she waited to be praised and told that she was correct. She already knew she was correct though because Severine was never wrong.

PostSubject: Re: Defence Against the Dark Arts - Lesson One (All Years)   Defence Against the Dark Arts - Lesson One (All Years) EmptyMon Jan 23, 2017 7:29 am

A new school year had begun, bringing with it another round of classes. This time, Lux was ready to work her butt off to graduate. Her grades had dropped considerably the previous year and though she would never admit it to anybody, her emotions had got in the way of her studies. She never should have gone on the search for her birth parents, never should have opened that can of worms. It was no point digging up skeletons long buried six feet under hurt, disappointment, and abandonment. Finding her birth parents and their new happy little family did not sit well with Lux. All that child-like hope - however much she tried to hide it - that her parents wanted and loved her was snuffed out in an instant when she met them.

For a long time after that, she went crazy. She became a whirlwind of destruction, tearing apart innocent people, trying to incur to others as much hurt as she received. It was only because of Kamren and Clarinda's eternal patience that she wasn't kicked out to the streets. Merlin knew that if it had been any other couple, Lux would once again find herself homeless. Deep down, she knew she was grateful to them for their understanding. She would repay them by being the best in class once again.

She entered the class room, jaw working on chewing gum as she eyed what was written on the board. The freezing spell was not unknown to her and for a moment, Lux considered skipping class. But she was reminded yet again of her vow and she continued into the room, completely ignoring the professor and standing near the back.

Well, let's see if we can't have some fun with this Lux thought as Jake questioned the class. "You mean besides freezing people's lips to shut them up when they talk too much?" Lux said, not bothering to raise her hand before speaking. "Obviously to put out fires and keep ice cream cold, among other things." She could have said much more. In fact, she wanted to say much more, but decided against it. Landing up in detention wasn't on her to-do list for this year.
