"I'm fine Professor!" Prim replied with a wide smile upon her lips as she leant against the wall, her arms crossed over her chest and her head tilted just a tiny bit to the side so that she could see both the professor and the other students.

The Freezing Charm, Prim knew, was used for many different things and as she listened to her fellow students she mentally made notes before piping up herself. "You could use the Freezing Charm to freeze over a pond or a lake so that you could Ice Skate on it, I suppose. It can be used to immobolize pixies for one and some people say that you can also use the charm to disable Muggle Burglar alarms..." She trailed off, a little bit unsure about the last bit, it's not like she had actually tried it or anything.

Biting her lower lip, she ignored most people in the room and just kept her gaze forward and on Jake.

As the answers came, Jake nodded along to each of them. Some were... less practical than the ones he'd had in mind, but that didn't make them wrong. The students were thinking outside of the box, and for that much he was quite grateful.

"You're quite right, Severine." Jake acknowledged once all of them had finished. "Whilst an apology for your lateness would have been much preferred, your answer is right, to a degree. The freezing charm can be used to freeze fire - not put it out. Take five points for Gryffindor." Jake told her, before turning to the Head Girl who had spoken next.

"Whilst I've never tried to freeze someone's lips together, I could imagine it would work, Lux." Jake replied, quite care free in his response. "Fire, like we said, can be frozen, not put out. And yes, a very practical use would be to keep ice cream cold." Jake summarised with a smile. "Take five points for Slytherin!"

The additions from Primrose made Jake smile. It seemed she'd read the text book, from the examples she'd given. Not that there was anything wrong with that. "Very good, Primrose! All three are quite correct - the ice skating one being one we'll try today!" Jake explained, a glint in his eye as he explained. "Take five points for Gryffindor as well!

"So, today," Jake continued, turning to the class as a whole. "You'll see..." Jake paused, taking out his wand and flicking it so that enough small paddling pools of water came in to view around the class for each of them to have a go. "You will be trying to freeze a... reasonably sized expanse of water. The incantation for this spell is Glacius, make sure to pronounce this clearly, whilst also thinking quite clearly on what you wish to do. If you do a good job, you should be able to stand on the ice, without it cracking. So, if you manage to leave this room with dry socks, you'll know you got the spell down to a tee!" Jake explained, motioning them all off to have a go.

Christopher was, in truth, pretty disappointed in Professor Newbury's idea for this lesson. Usually they were quite adventurous. But a paddling pool of water? Christopher couldn't believe the professor had thought this was going to be an acceptable lesson. Though, he supposed, this at least meant he wasn't going to have to push himself to succeed.

Pushing himself away from the wall, Christopher moved to one of the nearby pools to make a start. Taking out his wand, Christopher twirled it between his fingers absently before focusing on what he was about to do. Freeze the water, solid enough to be able to stand on top of it. A solid freeze. This meant that it was going to require a lot of concentration to get it right.

Still, he wasn't a bad wizard, so it shouldn't be too difficult.

Pointing his wand at the expanse of water, Christopher kept a clear picture of his intentions in his mind. "Glacius!" He spoke confidently, and a blue beam of light moved from the tip of his wand to the water. The sounded of crackling came to Christopher's ears as the water froze quickly. Solidly. Smiling to himself after a few moments of holding the spell, Christopher flicked his wand away with a soft Finite Incantatum and moved towards the pool. Testing it first with his hand, Christopher was satisfied that the ice was thick enough to stand on.

Stepping on to the ice with caution, Christopher took a moment, before smiling triumphantly. "Professor Newbury - I think we can safely say I don't need more practice on this one." Christopher told him much too cockily, really. But Christopher was very used to getting things done correctly. Today was no different.

The lesson was going to either get very boring very quickly or it was going to get very amusing and as she watched Richardson out of the corner of her eye, she decided to go for very amusing. The seventh year was feeling much too cocky about this and she wondered how would he feel when a fourth year would get the spell just as quickly?

Stepping up towards one of the small pools, she pulled out her wand and pointed it at the water in the pool. "Glacius!" Speaking the words clearly and with intent, the fourth year watched as a blue beam of light hit her own water that started solidifying with a satisfying crackling sound. Smirking, the Gryffindor waited for it to finish before she stepped forward and onto the glass, feeling smug when her own pool of water stayed frozen under her weight.

It was solid enough to skate, she was quite sure, but the pool was much too small to do it in. "Professor Newbury, I'm done." She announced proudly as she stood on the ice. Not a crack was seen on the ice where she was standing. It was perfectly clear and pure white.

Jake watched on as the various students moved away to give the spell a go. It wasn't the easiest spell in the world, nor was it the hardest. The key was to concentrate on what you were trying to achieve. If you could do that, then this task was easily achievable.

Which was proven only a moment later when the Ravenclaw, Christopher, completed the task and decided to make it known. Giving the boy a smile, Jake moved over to inspect the work that had been done. "Well done, Christopher." Jake told the boy, giving him a warmer smile. "Looks very solid. Your socks aren't wet, so, I'd say you've got this down to a tee!" Jake praised, before another student caught his attention.

Looking over to Prim, Jake smiled upon seeing her completing the task successfully too. "Well done, Prim! Looks like you've got it too!" Jake told her, moving over to see her progress. "Looks very sturdy! Well done on that, it definitely looks like you won't be going through the surface any time soon!"

Shortly after that, the bell went to signify the end of the lesson. "Right, everyone - well done to those who have managed to achieve a perfectly frozen expanse of water, I'm proud of you. No homework tonight, so make the most of it. I'll see you all next week!" Jake announced, before waving everyone away.

Class closed.
