I use the word father to describe the husband of my mother. I use dad for my biological father.

My father is a butcher. My mother is the daughter of a church elder and on the board of education for our town. She's important; he's not.

She had an affair three years into their marriage and had me. He is infertile, so the family knew I wasn't his.

For the sake of image and family, they told nobody; nobody knows but us. They can't divorce. It would be the end of our social lives (which is everything in a town like ours).

So they keep it a secret. I can't tell anyone. I'm not wanted by my father or his family. You can see it in their eyes. We see them once a year and play happy families in public but when we are alone they don't speak two words.

I don't know who my dad is. Someone high up, obviously. I guess a local politician. Mum's the only one who knows and she forbade me from asking.
