OOC: This lesson takes place on 23 January 2024.

Christmas had been a whirlwind for Jake. With both of his children now completely understanding what Christmas meant, it meant that the Newbury's had fully indulged in watching Adrienne smiling, laughing, and giggling as Henry Newbury (dressed as Santa) gave her and Ivan more than enough presents to keep them satisfied with the year. Though, Jake wasn't sure who had enjoyed the whole experience more, Victoria or Adrienne.

After presents had been completed, and Santa had left to go and see other children, Pops (as Ivan had taken to calling Henry, and Adrienne had followed suit) had reappeared from his visit to the shed. Alexis Newbury had pulled out all the stops for Christmas dinner, as usual, and the six of them had spent the afternoon in a food coma whilst trying to build the castle Ivan had been given for his toy knights for Christmas.

And, for the first time in a long time, Jake had been truly happy with everything he had.

Christmas had come and gone, though, and the new year had arrived. Jake was excited, to say the least for the new school term that was here, and he was definitely ready to get back in to his (hectic) routine.

Back in his classroom which was, once again, devoid of desks and chairs, Jake sat upon his desk waiting for his students to arrive. Behind him, on the board, as usual, the topic for the day was displayed in Jake's messy handwriting.

The Shield Charm and how to throw with accuracy.

Whether the students would find the added extra to their amusement, Jake couldn't say, but it had amused him as he wrote it, so he didn't care if it was only him.

Christmas break had been fantastic. Sophie had taken part in a small local show jumping competition and won but that wasn't the only thing that made Christmas break memorable. She'd gotten her first client - paying client. One of Grampa's friends had bought a Quarter Horse advertised to be an excelling horse for cutting cattle. The only problem was that he refused to cut cattle. Sophie had, at first, been hesitant on accepting the job, firstly because no one had ever paid her to 'cure' a horse before. Sure, she'd given advice to people having problems with their horses. She'd even worked on a few of them on her own, 'curing' them for their owners, but that had always been free of charge and more of gaining experience for her.

The guy had been nice though, insisting that she at least take a look at the horse and work with him for a while. If nothing came out of it, then she would've lost nothing. After some encouragement from her Grandparents, Sophie decided to give it a go. In two days, she'd figured out the problem, and in the next week, she'd made some progress. She'd been ecstatic about it but school was starting and she had to return to Hogwarts.

She entered the classroom and saw that she was the first one to be there. "Hi, Jake," she greeted with a smile before heading to the side of the room and standing there. The Shield Charm was one she knew theoretically but had yet to try her hand out at it. At any rate, she hoped the lesson would be fun and interesting.

Mimosa had never known how bad Mercy's condition got sometimes simply because they had never talked much about about it. But after the American witch had returned from the states and caught up with her best friend a the castle again, she had seen Mercy grow steadily paler as the end of the month neared. Upon asking the Gryffindor Chaser, Mimosa had been told that Mercy suffered from something called "Lupus" and it made her really tired for a few days a month. Mimosa knew Clara had cramps and was tired once a month too, maybe Clara had Lupus too?

Illness was no stranger to Mimosa, having grown up with regular doctor visits and frequent home check up. Why even during the holidays Clara had taken her to a super special doctor who had shown her papers, charts and words and played lots of fun games with her. S when it looked like Mercy needed help and cheering up, Mimosa made made sure to dump everything else in favor of hanging out with the short haired brunette, even opting to spend her evenings in Gryffindor common room safely hidden in one of Dia's hoodies.

She really had to order uniforms and scarves in all house colors from next year on, they were remarkably easy in gaining access to other Houses, the child had learned.

Today, Mimosa was once again found by Mercy's said, one hand curled loosely around the older Gryffindor's waist in case Mercy needed support. She had gotten really sick lately and now it was Mimosa's job to be there for her and make her better. So for the first time since her arrival at Hogwarts, Mimosa entered a classroom without her entourage, without even noticing the class around her, far more preoccupied with Mercy as the two little girls walked into a class devoid of desks and chairs, picking a corner to stand quietly in.

Mimosa tightened her hold on the other witch, her blue eyes sweeping the room and landing on the black board with more words on it. Promptly, her gaze shifted, words wren't important. Mercy was.

At the full moon approached, Mercy fell into her usual rut. The fatigue kicked in almost a week before the moon reached its peak, and as the days dragged by, she felt worse and worse. It was two days away now, and she'd woken up to a splitting migraine, which had only lessened slightly as the day went on. She took slow, careful steps, trying not to jostle her head too much, and tried to put up a good front.

Mimosa was an incredible help. Although the younger girl didn't know the truth of Mercy's illness, she understood that Mercy was feeling under the weather, and had made it her duty to stand at her side and help in any way possible. She couldn't express how grateful she was for the other girl's company, and for the notable disappearance of her usual flock of people, whom Mercy was not in the mood to deal with at the moment.

Still, no matter how horrible she was feeling, she knew Defense class would cheer her up. So she and Mimosa strolled slowly down the hall, Mercy's arm draped over the smaller girl's shoulders, and Mimosa's arm wrapped around Mercy's waist. Occasionally, Mercy would lean some of her weight on Mimosa when a bout of dizziness came over her, but thankfully that was rare, and she could mostly handle it on her own.

They entered the classroom side by side, and went to stand in the corner so Mercy could lean against the wall if she had to. Her gaze drifted to the board. Oh, good. The Shield Charm didn't sound too active, or like it would require much physical exertion. Hopefully she wouldn't have to move very quickly with this one.

Chauncey was happy to back at school, and being in his common room. Which had been filled with a studying Chauncey, who rarely talked to his housemates. He was excited to be back in his classes and trying to become better. So, he decided that he would make his way to his Defense Against the Dark Arts class. Even though he didn't find much joy in the subject, to begin with, but he needed the grades. Making his way up to the class, Chauncey had been curious to see what physical activity would be there.

Entering the classroom, the Ravenclaw saw three other students there. Rolling his eyes as he saw there were no other boys. But that was not important, the professor had been sitting on his desk and it caused Chauncey to smirk. Looking at the board, Chauncey let out a smirk thinking about doing Shield Charms, and their accuracy. Not being the type of student who got involved in dueling and defending himself.

Taking the time, to look around the room. He wasn't sure what to expect since the only desk had been the one Professor Newbury sat on. So this meant it would be hiding in the back in which caused him to roll his eyes. He decided that he would stand close to a wall and cross his arms, as he waited for the class to begin.

The preteen sighed as he sullenly made his way to the classroom. This wasn't one of his favorite classes. For something like this, he was sure that like most of the classes would have been better with a one on one tutor like program. However, he knew that a certain Slytherin was in this classroom and he had somehow come to feel a bit responsible for the force of nature that was Mimosa. She had done something, he was sure of it that first day in Diagon Alley and had only cemented it on the train when she'd taken his jacket. If nothing else, while she was equal parts amusing and exasperating, Gaspard couldn't in good conscious allow her to be in this class alone.

When he'd come in and read the words the professor had wrote he knew this was not going to end well. Not for him at least. Glancing at the strange girl, he sighed once again resigned to do her bidding. Somehow, he'd make sure that she didn't end up destroying the classroom or some such with her aim. It was bound to happen. Perhaps he should just start carrying a Mimosa kit about just to be prepared?

PostSubject: Re: DADA: Lesson Two (Years 1-5)   DADA: Lesson Two (Years 1-5) EmptyThu Feb 08, 2018 6:53 pm

"Good morning, Sophie!" Jake replied to the first witch to arrive to the room. The young witch moved off as two more students entered the room. One being Mercy Williams, and the other... the other student Jake hadn't seen before, and as neither one of them spoke up, Jake merely smiled in their direction before his attention was taken away from them both by the arrival of another student.

Or, half taken away, Jake's eyes lingered on Mercy, obviously struggling with her monthly condition. Whilst Lupus had been the given excuse to the teachers, Jake's studies, and place as an Auror let him be a little more clued up on the business, but he'd never divulged his idea to anyone. The child did not need burdening.

The rest of the students continued on in their impolite manner, not greeting him as they entered, and all looking rather sullen. January Blues, Jake reflected as he glanced up at the clock at the back of the room. It was about time to st-

Jake's eyes caught the blue eyes looking up to the board.

The young witch who hadn't attended before...

Glancing down at the folder on his desk that was supplied each term with a list of names he was expected to see attending, Jake opened it (for the first time). His finger scanned down the names in that moment, and stopped almost halfway down the list.

Harrington, Mimosa.

For a moment, Jake thought himself to be dreaming, but after one blink, two, the name still sat upon his list. Glancing back to the young witch, Jake found her turned back to her friend, her face hidden behind her hair...

"G-Good morning," Jake greeted the class, taking his eyes off of the young witch. "Good morning." He said again, pushing a smile on to his features in that moment that did not meet his own blue eyes in that moment.

Don't think about it.

"Today, we will be looking at the Shield Charm." Jake explained, motioning to the board behind him, focusing on all of the students except the two first years huddled together by the wall. "Now, it is rather obvious what the spell does, it creates a shield between yourself and someone, or something, else. However, does anyone in the room know the downfall to the Shield Charm?"

After the question, there was a pause. Jake looked at his students expectantly in that moment, eyes daring to flicker towards the Harrington child, but self-restraint keeping him from doing so.

"But, also, anything else that may be of note, for the rest of the class, before we move on to the practical element of today's lesson." Jake added, a very delayed after thought as he spoke.

The class slowly filled up but for once, Mimosa wasn't really interested in who was coming and going, her priority was Mercy and on Mercy her attention would remain. Or a least until both their favorite Ravenclaw male waked into class. Using her free hand to wave Gaspard over, Mimosa now stood supporting Mercy with Gaspard on the Gryffindor's other side. He must have wanted to help them, that's why he was here, she decided internally, confirming her own suspicion when Gaspard gave her what looked like a silent nod.

The class began soon after and Mimosa was glad the teacher was explaining things instead of writing. Her oval shaped face turned to the teacher and her blue eyes curiously assessing the board and him in turn, the child wondered what you did in Defense. Just... defended stuff? her free hand ran through the chocolate waves of her fine silken hair as she thought over the question he had posed. What could prevent or foil a Shield Charm? Was there a shield against the shield charm?

Tentatively, the slender witch raised a finely sculpted arm, sculpted almost from a dancers body should someone look close enough. Mimosa however was completely unaware of it as she attempted an answer. "Umm, if you're defending, you can't attack?" she asked more than answered.

"So you better have a really good shield or you're donezo," the American expression slipped with a slight giggle but she remembered the duel she had witnessed in Italy forever ago. Shield charms only worked if you had a solid back up planned.

While not one to care about anything unless it pertained to him, Gaspard reasoned that he had to pay attention to everything especially Mimosa whenever the Slytherin was around. That was why he furrowed his brow and glanced at the professor with a curious look when he repeated himself after stuttering. Filing it away he thought about the advantages and more specifically the disadvantages of the shield charm. He gave the barest hint of smile and glanced at Mimosa when she answered.

Raising his own hand, Gaspard volunteered his own answer not to be outdone. "The shield charm isn't infallible. There are some spells that the shield can't deflect or absorb."

There was plenty more he could say on the subject but it seemed like their professor wanted them all to at least try and answer or at least voice their thoughts. He supposed that it was a good way to gauge if they understood what the spell was and did.

PostSubject: Re: DADA: Lesson Two (Years 1-5)   DADA: Lesson Two (Years 1-5) EmptySat Feb 10, 2018 2:49 pm

The will to not look at the child who's name was exactly the same as a person Jake knew to be dead. A child who, as Kenneth Harrington had put it, was that person's last gift to the world. Harrington, though, was surely a common name. It could be a coincidence? But Jake remembered the name upon the letter had been Mimosa, and here, before him, stood a part of Azalea.

And the fates saw it fit for Jake to look upon the witch again as she raised her hand.

Jake motioned for her to speak, his eyes picking out the similarities now. The slender frame, the shape of her arms, the wave of her hair... but more importantly, the young witch's eyes.

With the answer from Mimosa, Jake nodded showing she was right as he swallowed the thick lump that had built in his throat in that moment. "Very good, Mimosa, very good!" Jake praised, but where his usual praise would have been warm, encouraging and meant from the bottom of his heart, Jake's current tone sounded off. The students who had been here before would know that, but he pretended nothing was amiss.

He couldn't allow it.

"Five points for Slytherin." He added quickly, turning away from the witch and motioning to Gaspard to speak up this time.

"Right you are, Mr Kylar!" Jake said, more enthusiasm in his tone this time because the young witch was not his concentration point this time. "Five points for Ravenclaw, too. The Shield Charm will not save you from the Unforgivable Curses -- these will be covered at a later stage -- so though it can be quite useful, you should never, ever, rely on such things when duelling.

"However, we're still going to look at the Shield Charm, because it is a good basis for a duel. The incantation of the Shield Charm is Protego, you will need to speak this clearly, and think about what you want to achieve this. I.e. you want to block an impending attack. Which..."

Jake levitated a basket of balls from behind his desk. Each of varying sizes and shapes. These would be the things each of his students would have to work with.

"So... umm... Gaspard, if you can work with Mercy and Mimosa, and then Chauncey if you work with Sophie. All you have to do, is stop the balls from hitting you when your partner, or partners, throw them at you. Then, if we get through that, we'll elaborate on the Shield Charm some more." Jake encouraged. It would be fun, he hoped, for all the students, he just had to hope everyone was going to give it a good go.
