Herbology Lesson 1 (All Years)

Victoria had, as always, smiled at everyone as they came in. Especially the cute little Ravenclaw boy who was so very nervous. She'd almost reached out to give him a small hug, but thought better of it. And, of course, her professor was lovely as always, asking how her summer had been. "Perfect, thank you professor." Victoria replied with a warm smile.

However, the smile grew very quickly when Allegra joined them, making a beeline for Victoria and...

Oh.

Wow.

Victoria's cheeks grew warm very, very quickly and her knees. Yep. Taking a deep, shaking breath, Victoria concentrated on the lesson, trying so very hard not to think about how her best friend had just kissed her cheek. Affection had never been lacking between them, not by a long shot, but that didn't mean that affection from Allegra caused any less of a reaction to the Head Girl.

Which only made it more insistent that they talk as soon as possible.

Victoria's hand moved to Allegra's, whispering a soft hello and trying to get the bright pink hue in her cheeks to leave, but in all honesty, it was quite difficult.

"I am talking about Devil's Snare. Now, who can tell me about it? One answer each, please."

Ooh! Exciting! Victoria thought to herself in the same moment that her hand went shooting up. Once called upon, the witch spoke, clearly and softly as usual. "Devil's Snare is a plant that will wrap it's vines around it's prey and crush it very, very slowly. If caught in it, you should relax, and it will let you go." Victoria supplied with a smile.

Watching the professor grow more and more nervous under his gaze made Joshua much happier with himself. And why not, there was nothing more satisfying than when you made people beneath you worry like that. It achieved nothing, of course, and Josh didn't mind, it was just fun exercising power on a whim like that.

"Any idea what we're supposed to be learning today?"

Until people thought that they were important enough to take your attention away from such things. To start with, Josh didn't react, before his eyes left the professor, moving to the witch beside him. Gryffindor, which figured at the impatience of waiting. "Do I look like the professor?" Josh drawled, not wanting an answer. Rhetorical. His eyes turned away from the witch, back to the professor to make him more uncomfortable, even if he'd taken to ignoring his gaze.

When the topic was explained, Josh paused, listening to the goody two shoes giving her answer, before he spoke. "Devil's Snare is among the types of plants that despises sunlight, so it naturally becomes a good way to combat the plant should you get stuck." Josh provided an answer, though his tone was as bored as someone watching paint dry.

Taylor raised an eyebrow at the response she got from the Slytherin. After he replied, she followed his gaze, frowning when she realised that he was staring at the Professor. She had no idea why he was doing it, but it certainly seemed to unsettle their teacher.

"Wow. Somebody isn't too happy to be here." She muttered, shooting a small glare in Josh's direction. It was then that she noticed the prefect badge on his robes and gave a small laugh. "I thought prefects were supposed to be pleasant to their classmates." She murmured, shaking her head as she spoke.

Taylor then turned her attention to the professor, not wanting to waste another second on the Slytherin that she had tried to be nice too. She listened to the other students answer the Professor's question before adding something else to what had already been said. "Devil's snare sense things by touch. Hence why if you relax, then the plant will stop as it can no longer sense you are there. But if you struggle against it, then it's sense has heightened and it will then work on strangling or choking you faster. If it can't feel you, then it won't kill you." She shrugged.

Smiling as Victoria was the first to answer, Dami nodded, but before he could give house points, the Slytherin he made a habit to avoid also added details. A Gryffindor was last to answer, and when he was sure nobody else was speaking, he nodded once more. "Very good, all of you. Take five points for your respective houses.."

Pausing, he glanced around, taking note of each student. "Now, I believe we have an all rounded answer. For those of you who are first years, the spell lumos would very easily help you if you come across the plant. Devil's Snare looks like a tangle of vines, but are deadly if touched. Struggling makes it squeeze tighter, and as such, if you relax, it won't squeeze and you have a chance to escape."

"Come," he instructed, walking to the back of the greenhouse and making sure the students followed him. There was a simple ladder leading up to the top of the greenhouse, where a make-shift door had been made. Pointing towards it, he smiled a little, excited. "Up there, is this plant. Quite simply, today, you are to experience it. For the older students, climb upstairs and enter the top floor. Be careful - I don't want you to hurt the specimen, or yourselves, for that matter. Relax, and you will end up here," he pointed to the open door on the ground floor. "Struggle, and I will step in to assist you. For the first years, I have been banned from allowing you to try this. However, over there," he pointed to a small dark corner beneath a canopy of trees, "Is a single small specimen. It's not big enough to harm you, and you can go check it out if you wish. On the table next to it are muggle torches which you can use, in case of anything. I will be monitoring the older students, so if you require assistance, let me know."

Taking a step back, he waited for the first student to approach the ladder.

Finley had stood quietly as he waited for the answers to be given. In honesty, he didn't know much about Devil's Snare, so he had stayed quiet, listening to the older students with a small flicker of awe in his features at just how clever they were. It was, well, it was truly amazing just how much some people knew and he aspired to be just as clever when he was older if it was possible.

When the professor told them to follow, Finley was the first to follow the professor, following closely on the professor's heels because he didn't wish to get left behind, nor did he really want for his view of the plant to be interupted by other people.

Finley let out a soft sigh though when the professor said only the older students could have a go at experiencing the plant. Finley wanted to have a go so badly, it didn't seem fair. With a little hurt look, Finley moved towards the smaller specimen and sat down beside it with one of the torches they'd been supplied with. Flicking it on, Finley watched the plant as it shied away, a small smile playing on his lips before he turned it off.

The plant had moved back in to the place it had been before. Curious as the Ravenclaw was, he reached out his hand and touched the plant, taking in the beauty of the object and wondering how it could be so dangerous. His curiosity - rather unfortunately, was something of his undoing as the plant wrapped itself around his wrist, somewhat tightly. Letting out a small squeak of discomfort, Finley tried to pull back, but the plant held on to him tighter, and Finley started to panic.

"Oh... n-no..." He murmured, wincing and trying to get free. He was panicking, but he didn't know what to do...

Victoria was so very excited at the prospect of getting up close with Devil's Snare. Sure, it was not a friendly plant, but experiencing it in a safe environment would only be beneficial to everyone in the class. After seeing little Finley (Victoria had taken to memorising most student's names) go off looking a little upset, she'd almost moved to play with the smaller specimen with him to make him feel less upset.

However, Victoria being Victoria wanted to jump in at the deeper end instead.

So, with one last helpless look towards the Ravenclaw boy, Victoria stepped forward to the front of the class. "I'll go first, professor!" Victoria supplied the professor, moving to the front and the stairs. Once there, the Head Girl tucked her skirt tight to her legs and climbed the stairs to the top. This felt like a disappearing act, or something equally as fun, if you asked the witch, and at the top, she carefully lowered herself in to the plant.

Now, Victoria knew that she wasn't to struggle if she wanted to get out. But there was no kind of experimentalist that didn't really try theories out before using the solution. Resisiting the plant for a short while, Victoria took in the strength of the plant - hissing a little at it's grip. It was good, very good, and it was slimy and cold. Damp. Yes. This was an experience. As the plant grew a little too tight for comfort, Victoria relaxed, closing her eyes and making her breathing come shallower.

Soon enough the plant was letting go and Victoria fell out the bottom with a soft 'oof'. "That..." Victoria started, getting up and dusting herself out as she emerged from below the ladder. "Was really awesome, professor!" Victoria grinned at the man, looking back at the plant and wondering what other delights they would be shown in the year.

Josh had listened to the instructions with little and less enthusiasm if he was honest. They'd seen Devil's Snare with their old professor and the experience... well, the actual plants never interested him with Herbology, and now the professor had changed he was less enthusiastic about the whole thing than he had been before.

Though with Joshua Murray enthusiasm was never really anything big on anything.

Watching the Head Girl move up the ladder, Josh wasn't overly keen on the idea. The first time had been more than enough for him to deal with, and he wasn't keen on doing it again.

Once the girl had finished, Josh stepped forward, moving to the ladder and climbing it by missing every other rung. Once at the top, Josh didn't bother looking back, jumping straight in to the Devil's Snare and relaxing himself. It was a quick process, and Josh landed effortlessly from the grip of the Snare below, brushing himself off and looking mildly displeased with the smell of the plant.

Moving back to the group, Josh simply waited for this torment to be over.

Mornings were just the worst, whoever decided everyone needed to wake up in the mornings was an utter arse in her mind. After throwing on her robe inside out and not bothering to brush her hair, just to throw it in a ponytail, Felix found out she'd missed breakfast and was now very late indeed to her first lesson. She sprinted through the school, jumping the staircases and bounding through the doors and over the lawns towards the greenhouses, she ploughed right into the group of students already gathered there in time to catch the last part of the Professor's instructions but would have to ask someone what they were doing. Bugger it.

She weaved her way through the students without much consideration for personal space. She found a boy roughly her height, though couldn't tell if he was younger or older, but could see he was a ravenclaw, he looked like he was going to cry, bless him. She stood next to him and gave the professor a large grin. "Sorry for being late, lots of stairs." IT was a poor excuse and a lie since she cleared most of the stairs quickly but she didn't want to explain she hated mornings and woke up late.

As Victoria stepped away from the Devil's Snare, she noted a younger Gryffindor coming in to the area. With a smile as radiant as ever, the Head Girl moved towards the witch, as friendly and open as ever. "It's okay, I'm sure Professor Peat understands. Being a first year is difficult at the best of times!" Victoria confided with the witch, because she knew Professor Peat wouldn't mind her helping out.

"Now, if you come with me," Victoria started to explain, motioning towards the small Ravenclaw boy who seemed to be having problems. "We can see if we can help Finley out of this situation he's got himself in. Have you heard of Devil's Snare?" She asked, though it didn't matter if the witch hadn't, of course.

"Best way to help Finley here," Victoria said as they got closer to the Ravenclaw. "Is to take one of the flashlights and aim it at the plant." Victoria suggested to the witch, trying to get more people to participate. "It's going to be okay, Finley. Just relax, like Professor Peat suggested." Victoria told the younger boy with a soft smile of encouragement.

Whoa! Felix just spotted the head girl coming towards her, crap was she caught? She grinned up at the girl hoping she hadn't been caught out but was happy and surprised the witch was just offering to help out. They were working with a dangerous plant so this would be fun. So she followed her towards Finley and tried not to giggle at the sight.

"It's uh..hold on I know this word...It's not a heliotrope it's whatever the opposite is." She smiled she only knew the word in passing, having heard it on the radio over the summer and found it fun to say out loud, so naturally she learned what it meant.

Thinking she should help out she took one of the torches and shone it at the plant, enjoying watching it squirm a bit more than seeing if Fin was alright, though she did hope he was she'd feel very bad if he was hurt. "It looks like it's dancing."
