Herbology: Lesson Two (All Years)

Humphrey was starting to notice he was making a habit of running late, and that he would definitely need to work on it. First he was nearly late to CoMC earlier this week, and now he was pushing the edge in Herbology. Honestly he knew it would be fair if he got docked a some points for arriving when the professor was explaining that they'd be working with bouncing bulbs. Looking around, he noticed the short girl in the big fur-lined coat and made his way to stand next to Naomi.

Even though he usually enjoyed Herbology and tried to read ahead he couldn't really remember much about this plant. All he knew was that they had a tendency to try and hit you if they felt threatened, but since they were bouncing around he thought that was kind of stating the obvious. Instead, he settled in, waiting for somebody who knew more to enlighten him. "Hey." he said quietly to his Slytherin friend.

At the question that was posed, Elenore raised a slender hand and waited to be acknowledged before speaking. Her soft French voice was raised just enough to be heard by those gathered at the greenhouses, and it was confident. "The Bouncing Bulbs are purple bulbs with green leaves sprouting from the top. Young bulbs are small enough to handle, whereas full grown ones can be the size o a man, if not bigger. They're quite dangerous when fully grown, but many a Herbologist has been noted to suggest they're fun when small."

As for Elenore, she was not sure as to whether this was going to be fun, but she was reserving judgement until the professor had had his fair go at teaching.

"Oh, and the Knockback Jinx is useful for dealing with the smaller bulbs." Elenore added as an afterthought - which meant this was likely going to have something to do with the lesson today.

Turning his attention to a Hufflepuff witch - seemingly a French, Hufflepuff witch - Caspar nodded along with her answer, almost grinning at the extent of her knowledge as she spoke through the facts about Bouncing Bulbs. "Very good, Miss..." He left a gap to find the witch's name. "Take five points for Hufflepuff for that well rounded answer!" Caspar told her, before addressing the class as a whole.

"As Miss Clement just explained, we will be looking at the Bouncing Bulb, and repelling them with the Knockback Jinx. Inside there is a bin - for transportation purposes. Once we get them inside, there is a containment charm to keep them in there. So, without further ado, everyone wands at the ready, and in you go." Caspar insisted, motioning for them all to head in to the greenhouse with him.

"Don't be afraid, they're only little, so their bounce won't be harmful." Caspar added, in case anyone was worried for their safety.

Lux raised one eyebrow at the Hufflepuff's answer. Her language was sophisticated, posh, and formal, quite unlike many of the other students. It was almost as if a stuck up adult resided in the body of a teenager. Or maybe it was just a teenager trying to be a stuck up adult with her nose in the air and thinking she was better than anyone else. Oh, there was nothing wrong in thinking that, if one actually was better than anyone else, but one didn't have to be obvious about it. It made Lux want to gag.

At Mr. Aphrodisiacal Grinch's instruction, Lux took out her wand and entered the greenhouse, into the presence of hyperactive plants. Not wanting to spend any more time than necessary, Lux picked a relatively empty corner where no one else could get in her way - no matter how fun it would be to use the Knockback Jinx on another student and claim it to be accidental.

It was almost like a game to get the bulbs into the bins. If one didn't aim properly, the spell would miss the bulb. Lux didn't have much difficulty, having quite a good aim. Some bulbs took more than one jinx to get it into the bin but she didn't relent, casting the spell too fast for the bulb to do anything else. Some were trickier and she had to sidestep the bulb so as not to get it jumping into her face, but she had quick reflexes so it didn't pose that much of a problem.

It didn't take that long to get all the bulbs around her into the bins but by the time she was done, she felt almost cross-eyed. She hadn't missed that many bulbs but it took quite a lot of concentration to predict the movements of the plants. Proud of her work, Lux crossed her arms and waited for the class to be dismissed.

The idea of bouncing bulbs was something that made Prim grin in amusement as she made her way into the greenhouse with her wand at the ready though naturally she waited for Max to follow her in before she hustled her friend to the other end of the room, the one that was as far away from Miss Head Girl, as possible before she started sending the Knockback Jinx at the curious plants who seemed almost gleeful at trying to attempt to jump out of the way of the spell but Prim wasn't about to let that get her down and instead she put more force into her spell before she turned to Max with a grin and said.

"Want to see who puts more of these fellows into the bin?" She challenged her friend as she absently sent another Knockback Jinx at the persistent bulb that was jumping in her face.

As the explanation of the plants was given, Max watched the bulbs bouncing some more in amazement, he'd never seen them before, and they were definitely very cool! Following Primrose in to the Greenhouse when they were told to give it a go, Max took his wand from his pocket and followed her to the end of the Greenhouse.

The challenge set by Prim made Max groan. "You're going to beat me so badly, though!" Max insisted, because he wasn't great with moving targets. However, the Gryffindor raised his wand, and sent a Knockback Jinx in the direction of a Bouncing Bulb, only for it to miss, and ricochet off in to a plant pot which smashed on the other side of the greenhouse.

Grimacing, and hoping Professor Loverin didn't have some attachment to the pot, Max tried again, to little success. The bulbs were quick little things, and this was much harder than Max could have anticipated.

Caspar watched his students jump in to the lesson, a smile playing on his features at the varying degrees of success that were achieved. By the time the lesson was done, most of the Bouncing Bulbs had been caught. With a few quick, casual flicks of his wand, Caspar had finished off the last of the bulbs and an air of peace fell over the greenhouse.

"Right, well done everyone! I hope you found that enjoyable! Bouncing Bulbs can always be a good source of stress relief when you're blasting them with a Knock Back Jinx." Caspar explained with a warm smile, and a soft laugh. "As it's the Christmas holidays, I'm only going to set reading for homework. Please can you all read up on Venemous Tentacula before you come back from the holidays so that you each know how to deal with it.

"Have a great Christmas, and I'll see you all in the new year!" Caspar summarised, waving them away.
