Care of Magical Creatures: Lesson Three (All Years) - Page 3 Empty

Quite frankly, Lana thought Care of Magical Creatures would be right up her alley, that was until she had arrived there. This whole magic wizarding school was completely ridiculous and Lana felt like completely giving up on it. It was so hard! How could something about creatures be so hard?

The eleven year old absolutely loved cats but they weren't dealing with cats here, they were dealing with lizards on fire! She was surprised it didn't hurt the lizards but she knew, if she was touched she'd be hurt.

Reluctantly, Lana grabbed a chilie to feed to one of the lizards who was now moving closer to her since the barrier had been brought down. She would much rather try surfing again than this.

The girl stooped down and extended her arm as the salamander moved closer and when it was close enough to take a nibble, Lana dropped it and backed off, terrified. There had been several other first years in this lesson, but she didn't see any others that appeared to be afraid and that made her feel a bit embarrassed.

Sophie had been too engrossed with her task of looking into the fire to notice that the professor had started the class. By the time she realised he'd asked them a question, it was too late for her to answer as another girl was...doing something with her hands and the professor was explaining what she - Amber - had said. Sophie spared her a curious glance before turning her attention back to Professor Jameson.

When he told the class that they could feed the salamanders, Sophie couldn't help the bright grin that split her lips and it was all she could not to go straight to the fire and instead wait until he was finished talking. She was one of the firsts to get to the tray of chilies and took no time at all grabbing some and squatting down near the fire.

The moment the guard was let up, the creatures came wandering out of their nest and Sophie was right there, holding out the chillies to them, grinning as they ate it up. Spotting a few trying to run away, she dropped a some chillies for the four already around her before jumping up and luring the runaways back to the old group. "Nah-ah. No tryna run away now. Come on. Over here. There we go!"

As she fed the salamanders, talking with them in a low voice, something caught her eye. In the group of lizards gathered near her, she noticed one particular one that didn't seem to be doing too well. There was something wrong with its skin; it was dry and falling off in tiny flakes. Frowning, she glanced up to where the professor was, and called out, "Sir? There's something wrong with this one. It's got scale rot."

Salamander's weren't animals that Prim liked too much but she was going to take a chance with them. They weren't too scary but they weren't also too docile so Prim had to be careful in what she was doing. Taking a few of the chillies, Prim moved back a little bit and waited for the barrier to go down before she crouched down and started to feed the chillies to the little creatures, grinning softly as some of them came over to snap at the chillies.

She watched them with a soft look in her eyes and made sure to usher them back in before they tried to escape. She didn't want to be running around Hogwarts trying to find the little salamander's because they ran off. Though she was quite sure that Max would certainly enjoy having one as a pet.

Speaking of Max, she turned her head to watch her boyfriend and she couldn't help the snort that escaped her. He was looking all lovestruck looking at the salamanders. "Max, you going to actually help?" She questioned with a teasing voice.

Max had blanked when the professor had begun talking. Missing out on points for the answers he could have given, but also on what they would be doing. His eyes had been firmly on the Salamanders, wanting to get closer to them sooner rather than later, but he hadn't been paying attention.

It was only as Prim started to move off that Max began to follow blindly after her, still watching the creatures in that moment. "Helping, helping!" Max insisted, grabbing some chillies and moving closer to help. Max's attention was taken, though, by a question raised by the Hufflepuff, caring for a Salamander with Scale Rot.

Max's heart ached for only a second before he moved to the witch, kneeling beside her as she asked how to deal with it. "Scale rot in Salamanders can be treated with chilli powder." He explained to the witch, looking down at the beast with utmost curiosity. "You have to rub it in to the rot..." Max explained, before Professor Jameson came to their side.

"Do you have chilli powder, sir?" Max asked, looking up at the professor with a hopeful look.

"Here..." The Headmaster had replied - as if knowing this was going to happen.

Max took the powder, and looked back to the witch with a small smile. "You can help me, if you'd like? I'll hold him still... You need to rub the powder in to the affected area, gently, of course, and it will soothe the rot." Max explained. He knew this from his books, never having cared for a Salamander before, but the Headmaster hadn't corrected him, so he knew he was right.

Before the professor could respond to her or give her some chilli powder, a boy appeared beside her and began to explain how to deal with it. Lips puckered, brow furrowed, and eyes narrowed in annoyance, Sophie battled within herself if she should tell this fellow off or not. Did he take her for an idiot?
What was the point in being able to identify the disease if you didn't know the cure for it? Since she'd managed to do the former, didn't it follow that she'd be able to to the latter? Plus, she was more than experienced in dealing with animals who had problems, whether physical, emotional, or mental. There was even that one time she'd concocted a poultice out of ground charcoal, honey, and olive oil. Boys are such idiots.

But this wasn't the time for arguments. The salamander needed help before its tail fell off. That didn't mean she had to like the boy. Taking the chilli powder without words, she sprinkled it on her fingers and began to gently rub it into the affected lizard. If she'd been alone, she would've talked to the salamander, but since this boy was here, she kept silent, focusing on the task at hand. When she was done, she nodded to the boy so he could let the salamander go.
