  - Janet loves to watch the muggle's disney movies. She finds their ideas of "magic" to be entertaining. Her favorite disney movies are Lilo and Stitch and The Little Mermaid. You can often find her referencing and quoting Disney movies.
  - Janet really enjoys her Care of Magical Creatures and Charms classes.
  - Janet loves playing the violin in the Hogwarts orchestra.
  - Janet loves hanging out at the library. The normally calm atmosphere makes it much easier to relax, study, focus or even take a nap if needed.

- Running is an important part of Janet's life. Not only does it keep her in shape, it also helps her let off some steam when she's mad or upset.
- Swimming is much like running for Janet. It keeps her in shape, gives her an output for her emotions, and on top of that lets her relax when she feels like it. Water is something that calms her, and a nice swim goes a long ways towards helping her de-stress.
- Strategy games are one of Janet's favorite pastime activities and help her exercise her mind, as well as just being loads of fun.
- Cooking! Well, it's not so much as she likes to cook, as much as she likes to eat well-cooked food, and therefore ends up cooking it herself to make sure it's done right. Often times she'll have a favorite food, like tamales, but not be able to find a place that can make it hows she likes, and has learned to just cook it for herself, and for her father of course.

  - Janet hates History of Magic. It is just soon boring, and who cares about any of it?! It's not like they're actually gonna use that information in the future.

  Janet Shinings has always been a pretty good kid... in the eyes of her parents, but that was because they were naive and didn't listen to her teachers. Don't get me wrong, she got pretty awesome grades. In fact, she was a straight-A student, but that didn't stop her from being a... I guess you could say, troublemaker. Keep in mind, she never HURT anyone. Just harmless stuff, practical jokes, talking back, sass, that kind of stuff. She was pretty much looked at as a class clown. Her parents knew about none of this, because 1. Janet hid it from them and 2. they didn't want to believe it.

  You could say Janet was living the good life, all fun and games with no consequences. That was when she got her Hogwarts acceptance letter. Her (wizard) parents were thrilled and got her the supplies she needed for Hogwarts immediately. Janet's family is far from poor, though not live-in-a-mansion wealthy either. They lived in a relatively big house, big enough to have plenty of space but not big enough to be to cost too much. Janet always had anything she could ever want and grew up in an all wizard town.

  Janet excelled at Hogwarts, learning most of her magic quickly, though she did have rough patches in certain things, like anyone else. She got great grades and tried hard to make friends, though didn't let that completely distract her from her studies.

  Janet's parents are both wizards, who each went to Hogwarts and graduated with flying colors. Mr. Dean was in Ravenclaw, and Mrs. Carmen was in Slytherin. Carmen was a year below Dean and was in the house nobody outside of their own would want to make friends with. There should have been no reason for Dean to fall for her, and yet he did. Dean noticed Carmen when she first stepped up to be sorted into a faction. He prayed she would be in Ravenclaw but her being put in Slytherin did not deter him. He spent the rest of his years at Hogwarts winning her over and falling in love.

  When Carmen and Dean were out of Hogwarts they each went to the University of Excelled Witchcraft & Wizardry. Once graduated they decided to start a family... that was until Carmen was told she could never have kids. The couple searched the world for anything that would allow them to a have a child. At long last after 2 1/2 years of searching, they found an ancient fertility spell, that ended up working! She had a little girl, a little miracle really. The doctor said it damaged Carmen, however, and to not try the spell again or it would kill her. The couple considered themselves lucky to have the one child and vowed to give her whatever she wanted, without turning her into a brat, and so they did.

After Carmen's sudden death Dean took a long time to recover. He even lost his job at one point, holing up in his house alone with Janet. Eventually they started getting therapy and such, and Janet helped him get his job back, but he was never quite the same.

Janet narrowed her eyes as she looked towards the school. She finished lacing up her tight-ish athletic sneakers and rolled her shoulders before picking up her school trunk and Owlivia's cage and starting the walk up to the school grounds. One of the perks of living in Hogsmeade, it was relatively close to Hogwarts.

    The last several months had been hectic for the young witch, and even after these six months her mother had been gone, and Janet had taken off school to deal, and to grief, she still couldn’t wrap her head around the loss. The woman who had been there through her whole life, was now gone.

   Even worse was the fact that Janet hadn’t been there to see her go. She had been at school at the time, her father at work when it happened. The witch had been home alone, doing Merlin only knows what, when a robber had entered the house. While the remaining two Shinings weren’t sure what exactly had happened, they know there had been a struggle and they know Carmen Shinings had been killed that day.

    By the time Dean had gotten home from work that day, the woman was dead, their house looted, and the criminal was gone. They lost a lot that day, not only Janet’s mother, but much of the valuables that were kept at the house. Luckily, they hadn’t thought to take Janet’s old cd/dvd player that she stores under her bed, or even touch the old Disney movies she loved, and those movies helped Janet through one of the toughest times of her life.

    The funeral had been grand, her dad going a bit overboard with flowers and food for the lunch beforehand, but it made him happy for brief intervals, and kept his mind off things, so Janet let him go crazy, but handled the budget herself. That had been her mother’s job and she didn’t feel her father was fit to do the budgeting himself for the moment so she spent time with that. Besides, it kept her mind off things.

    The pair spent the next couple months really getting to know each other, and helping each other through the loss, even going so far as to get therapy together. Dean lost his job, having taken too many days off, but he didn’t care. Janet did, and scolded him harshly before being reminded that she was still the child of the household and being told not to worry about it, not that she listened to the latter piece of advice. When they both finally felt stable enough to get back into their routine Janet helped her dad get his job back by looking up some corporate policy about grief, and by pointing out he hadn’t taken a vacation (paid or otherwise) in years.

    Now she was ready to go back to school. Get her life started again. She knew she would need to catch up quite a bit, but she was determined to get back on track. She stopped outside the huge double doors and took a deep breath. It would be hard, but Janet was back at Hogwarts.
