"You know I can't guarantee, that, Kiran..." Jacques replied to her sadly. He understood, of course he did, that he was pictured with Azalea far too frequently, that every newspaper suggested that she was his romantic flame.

But none of it was true.

"I can't explain why she's at the Palace, it's for official reasons, though, Kiranjeet." Jacques tried, but he knew how flaky that sounded.

"You're not a whore," Jacques defended the witch instantly, tentatively moving closer. "You're the woman I love, and because I love you, I want to protect you, from it all. From the newspaper's wrath..."

Jacques could only watch as Kiranjeet moved, retrieving a magazine and pressing it in towards his face in that moment. The question of how this was official business all she had to say.

"I dance with so many women, old, young, pretty, ugly." Jacques replied gently. "But, dancing with them doesn't mean anything. They only pick pictures like that because Azalea and I are friends, we spend time together, and they have nothing better to do than speculate if we're an item.

"Can't you see why I would want to keep you away from that? It's not nice for anyone!"

As always, she didn't understand.

Leaving the Clement heir unable to find words to articulate the difficulty of it all.

It was why the question of who he brought with him was never spoken.

Azalea understood.

"You know why." Jacques replied softly to her question. "I love you, with every fibre of my being. But, that isn't enough for someone like me. Loving someone is not a consideration for the place I will hold one day. I have to marry for the good of my family, for France.

"I wish there was another way, but I can't change my future."

The venomous retort was not unexpected. If anything, he had learned that regardless how much he cared for her, her offensive was brutal. Unrelenting.

The Frenchman turned away, moving to the kitchen counter, resting his hands on the side.

"I don't know how to do that." Jacques replied, the admittance remaining just as soft as before because he didn't like to fight. "If I knew how to make it work, I'd take you to the Palace tomorrow. But it's not that easy, if it were, I'd have taken you there by now. I'm scared you'll get hurt, or worse."

"The worst they can do..." Jacques shook his head, moving to the small box from his PA on the side.

Opening it, Jacques pulled out the reports, the photos, the news clippings, the analysis.

Each stack being dropped on the counter before Kiranjeet.

"They will watch you, day in, day out. Your freedom? Gone. Your free will? Doesn't exist. I'm with you, because you challenge me daily. If I marry you, all of this... it disappears. I can't do this to you, because I could never forgive myself for destroying the woman you are, for locking the real Kiranjeet away."
