"The world, but not you. Nor your actions." Jacques replied gently as she nodded against his chest. It was the problem with this situation, he could no more control it that he could control the weather. Used to manipulating the world to his ways, it was an uncomfortable compromise.

Her question of what he'd told her about the Clements was not one Jacques could answer truly. "I've told you lots of things about the Clement family. You'll have to be much more specific..." He replied softly, rolling on to his side, his body naturally finding itself over hers for stability.

When he couldn't recall, Azalea had to shake her head. Of course, they had talked plenty over their lives, about everything.

"Back in the old days," she prompted softly as he adjusted his position. "With Kiranjeet..."

The memory might be old, but she had perfect recollection of it. "You told me she was no longer content with her role in your life. But doing that... Meant giving herself a status above your station. How could I ever think that of myself?"

The name that came from Azalea's lips was one that gave pause for a moment. He had not thought of the Malaysian witch for a very long time, and though the wounds had healed a long time ago, he knew what Azalea was going to say before the words left her lips.

"That's.... a different situation entirely." Jacques tried gently, but the difference he couldn't speak aloud. "You've never asked me for anything, and you understand... that this is complicated. Kiranjeet... never understood the role I had to take, and how that role wasn't made for her. You... understand some."

And there was their conflict laid bare. Any number of complicated reasons could have applied to why they weren't meant to be.

But mostly because even Jacques couldn't elevate her to a position he didn't control.

It was moments like these that left Jacques along and isolated in the world. Through no fault of the other party, and only the fault of his own existence.

His sister had been allowed her happiness.

Azalea had known her own happiness for the longest time.

But Jacques?

His father's words would haunt him for the rest of his life. The Frenchman could only nod with understanding as the light in his eyes dulled from existence.

"Then I shall hold on to the moments where I can pretend not to be a Clement. In a world where I'm only yours."

Jacques had no reply to the words spoken by Azalea. With his children in their latter years of school, it would be poor taste to suggest she was his world when their were others who, on paper at least, should have been the apple of his eye.

Even if, realistically, there was only truly one person he'd give the world for.

Instead of words that should remain unspoken, Jacques found Azalea's lips with his own once more, soft, unassuming, but conveying what could never be said.

An action which left no uncertainty for either of them that talking was done.

"Good night, Maman." Jacques said, gently inclining his head to press a kiss to her cheek. It had been a long day of work for them all, and he could no longer put off heading upstairs.

That was unfair, he reasoned as he left his parents for the evening.

He wasn't avoiding anything.

"Mon chouchou," Jacques greeted his wife as he entered their bed chamber, moving to her side to press a similar kiss to her cheek that he'd given his maman only a short while before. "How was your day? You had luncheon with..." Jacques tried, forgetting the name.
