| The final term had come in to being under difficult circumstances surrounding the Newbury family. The news had come from the US that everyone was to return home who held US citizenship, a fact that left Jake vastly uncomfortable. He was an American, born and raised in the country of the free, but with the notion of his freedom being taken by being dictated to about where he lived? It left an uneasy feeling in his stomach.
The children were not US citizens, either, Jake had never registered them as such due to his lack of current interest to return to his home. The idea of uprooting the children and taking them back to a country that he could not depend on the future of?
Impossible.
It had called to a head a very intense argument between the Newbury men, one that had not settled in to nothingness since. Henry Newbury had denoted his son as coward for not returning to his country after they had called him to arms, Jake had replied that his father could only be moronic if he was going to let the American government dictate what he would and would not be doing in the future. Both men had squared up to one another amidst the commotion of the argument, voices raised much too loudly. Alexis had been the one to interject, stepping between both men and gently resting her hand upon her son's chest and urging him that enough was enough. Jake's eyes had remained upon his father, livid with the accusations that had been thrown around, and the idea he could possibly allow his children to be pulled in to the unknown.
But he had backed down on his mother's gentle words, only looking to her after the crack of apparition from behind her had faded in to nothing.
"You should know better than to rile your father on matters like these. And, you've probably woken the children. Don't you dare do anything silly, come help me check on them." Alexis' words had been simple as she moved past her son, knowing he would not think about following his father at the mention of his children.
A week had passed since that night, but as Jake sat alone at his desk before class, he went over it again. His parents had already confirmed they would be leaving at the end of the school semester, leaving Jake and his children in the UK without the help the man relied on desperately to keep up with his work.
The lesson was not provided in the slightest, today, Jake's body language quite clearly showing he was not currently in the room at all. ________________________________________________~ Auror ~ Profile ~ DADA Professor ~ ~ In a Relationship ~ 36 ~ Father ~ 6' ~ American Accent ~

| "But whyyyyyy do you have to go?"
Usually before DADA classes, Mimosa could be found either in her own common room or meeting up with Mercy. Today however, the brunette witch was in the dormitory of one Lyra Fletcher, helping the young Hufflepuff pack. Well, "helping" as only Mimosa could, by asking questions and watching Lyra stuff random things into bags.
"I told you Mary-Kate, its the law. All American citizens have to go back now. We were the lucky ones because we got permission for me to at least stay and finish out the term."
"But I'm an American, and so is Dia. We don't have to leave Hogwarts."
For a moment, Lyra's eyes glittered strangely, as if she was mad. But then the expression turned to one of sadness. 'I guess all Americans aren't created equal," she breathed out and it looked like she was about to cry. Hopping off her bed, Mimosa went to hug her modelling twin.
"You know, it's funny," Lyra begin, sniffing slightly into the hug. "At first I didn't want to come here, I missed Cali so much. Now I don't want to leave."
"Oh please don't be sad Ashley, I'll come visit you all the time. And so will Dia. And all our other friends too. And now with your awesome Quidditch record, you can easily play in the minor leagues."
It took nearly twenty minutes to console the Hufflepuff seeker but finally Lyra was sitting down on her bed, drying her eyes and drinking some water. Mimosa didn't even ask her if she wanted to go to class, her friend was clearly in no mood. So telling Lyra to rest up, Mimosa herself left the cellar like common room with a morose air about her person.
Only to find her mood resonating across the DADA classroom in the face of their teacher. the usual, cheery Jake appeared to have been replaced by a thoughtful, absentminded one who hardly even noticed her enter. Usually Mimosa would have skipped on over to him but today she only walked normally, reaching his desk and giving a small wave.
"Hey," she called out, looking around to classroom to see any signs of what they would be doing today. Nothing came to mind. "Are you okay? Why is everyone sad today?" ________________________________________________

| The energy of the castle had been subdued lately, and Mercy hadn't failed to notice. It seemed everyone she knew was affected somehow by the departure of the American students. Mercy thanked her lucky stars that Mimosa wasn't one of the ones leaving, though of course she was sad to see Lyra go along with so many others.
Mercy knew next to nothing about American politics, nor did she care to, but for what it was worth, she thought the current government must be exceptionally stupid. She knew her parents liked to make fun of the last American president, and that they'd been hopeful for change during the most recent election, but it seemed this one wasn't much better. For all their talk of democracy, her dad had commented over the break, Their government sure doesn't like resistance.
Mercy knew Mimosa wanted to spend more time with Lyra before she left, so she decided to meet her in the classroom to give her some space. The generally melancholy mood of the school was taking its toll on Mercy's own attitude, making her feel sluggish and unmotivated. As she entered the DADA classroom, it was clear this class would be no different. Jake looked just as depressed as the rest of them.
Right, he's American too, she suddenly remembered. She hoped against hope that that didn't mean he was leaving. Apart from Mimosa leaving, that would be the worst possible news. She glanced at the professor with concern as she wordlessly took up her place beside Mimosa, slipping a hand in hers. |

| Biting his lip as he walked to class his normal energy levels absent, the boy didn't know what to do. Sometimes he felt like his energy would explode to make up for the lack of it in others, while there were times such at this that it seemed like everyone else had sapped him. It was driving Jurian crazy. Tugging at the cuff of one sleeve, the Ravenclaw student couldn't help but wonder what would happen if someone decided to stay and not return to America. Or what if they decided to go to a different country or couldn't they just give up their citizenship and get a new one? "Argh!" He let out a frustrated breath and after breathing a few times decided that he'd pick at it again after class.
Stepping into the classroom, he silently made his way to a desk and set his bag atop it. Crossing his arms he dropped his head atop them, and stared first at his professor then at the other students with a thoughtful frown. If there was one thing that Jurian knew was that you couldn't admit defeat right away. But to him, it had seemed that aside from confusion there was a bit of defeatist attitude and mood. It was a bit stifling and itched at him since that was the complete opposite of how he was. While he wasn't sure that his professor would care for him trying to alleviate the mood since he wasn't sure if the man would address the not so invisible elephant in the room. Sighing, he wrapped his legs around the stool he sat on and decided to see what would happen. It seemed that the professors reacted two ways; either they carried on as if nothing untoward was happening and the other was that they would just dismiss the class or have a free period. Or his last class had. ________________________________________________♮ Larch & Unicorn Tail ♮♮  PROFILE ♮♮ Directionally Challenged ♮There are no strangers here; Only friends you haven’t yet met

| "Are you okay? Why is everyone sad today?"
The Auror just about saved himself from jumping out of his skin in that moment, his eyes refocusing in that moment as the image of his daughter came before him. A smile touched at the corners of the man's lips as his eyes softened from the saddened gaze that had held him only a moment ago, replaced with the dim moment of hope. "I'm fine, Mimosa," Jake reassured the young witch, noticing the room was actually starting to fill up. "Lots of people are sad because America is forcing us to choose where we want to be." He supplied, not wishing to go in too heavy.
"But, you can rest assured, I'm not going anywhere." The man added, just as Mercy stepped up to stand beside the witch. "Good morning, Mercy." He greeted, before pulling himself back in to the mindset of teaching, and continued to acknowledge the other students as they came in to the room. By the time the lesson had started, Jake had remembered not to allow himself to get drawn away once more, and instead concentrate on the children that were here to learn.
"Okay, good morning everyone, I hope you're ready for today's lesson?" He asked, rhetorically. "Today, we're going to go back to duelling spells, more specifically, the Impediment Jinx -- sometimes referred to as the Impediment Hex. Does anyone know what this spell does, or the incantation for the spell we will be working on today?" Jake posed the question, looking around hopefully at his students for an answer to be presented to him. ________________________________________________~ Auror ~ Profile ~ DADA Professor ~ ~ In a Relationship ~ 36 ~ Father ~ 6' ~ American Accent ~

| The fact that Apollonia was heading into class late had never really registered with the woman as she somberly approached the DADA classroom, fingers clutching the strap of her bag. Her uniform was as pristine as ever and her hair done up in its usual high pony-tail yet the sombre look on her face stayed even as she stepped into the classroom where Jake had already started the lesson.
"Sorry for being late Jake." She apologized, not offering him any excuse because what could she say? That she didn't wish to burst into tears at the fact that Jake, their all-time favourite professor might be forced to leave? She just moved to her usual place in the room, bag carelessly tossed by the wall as she focused on the lesson, quite thankful that she hadn't missed too much of it, just mainly the beginning of the lesson.
"The incantation is Impedimenta." She answered, having heard the last part of Jake's question. |

| Shoulders relaxing now that the professor was getting back into a normal rhythm, he felt as if he could breathe easier. It just wasn't natural or in his wheelhouse to be depressed and sad. When those around him were, his inclination was try and lighten the mood which generally led to hijinks and/or him getting into trouble. At the mention of getting into dueling spells, he sat up straight, eyes never wavering from the man as Jurian practically vibrated with eagerness.
The boy was happy to know this one. He hadn't ever used it before but it sounded interesting. It would be fun if you were playing around and trying to do the slow motion stuff they had on television or in movies. Jurian's hand shot up as he answered, "It slows you down! Like you're trying to move around in jelly or molasses!" Personally, Jurian thought jelly was gross and didn't like the wiggly dessert treat. ________________________________________________♮ Larch & Unicorn Tail ♮♮  PROFILE ♮♮ Directionally Challenged ♮There are no strangers here; Only friends you haven’t yet met

| Jake's reassurance came at about the same time as Mercy's warm touch, lifting the young Sanhedrin's spirits quite a lot. When they had made sure their teacher was alright, the two girls turned to the desks, taking their seats behind Karan and Gaspard who had also opted to sit together.
"Today, we're going to go back to duelling spells, more specifically, the Impediment Jinx -- sometimes referred to as the Impediment Hex. Does anyone know what this spell does, or the incantation for the spell we will be working on today?"
Despot the sluggish mood, hands tentatively rose in the air. Loni answered first because she was super smart. then a kid Mimosa wasn't sure about answered and finally, her gray eyes fell on Lilac Capulet who looked to be in the process of raising her hand. Beating the younger Slytheirn to the punch, Mimosa raised her own despite knowing very little about the spell in question.
When Jake mentioned for her to speak, the child had to think. All she really knew about the jinx was that people other than her were rubbish at performing it. Wasn't it something Squid Boy had tried to use in a duel against her and failed?
"Umm, it doesn't work all the time and can bounce off surfaces. It needs to collide with skin or soft tissue to have the proper effect."
Yes, that was good, that sounded right. 'And I can do it the bestest in this class,' she added for good measure. She could do it the bestest in the whole school but Mimosa was too modest to say that out loud. ________________________________________________

| The late arrival of Apollonia's made Jake raise a questioning eyebrow at the witch, one that was answered with an apology which he gave a brief nod of acceptance to as he continued to explain the day's lesson to the class. The Slytherin witch had barely taken her place when she offered her answer, proving that whilst she may have been late, the witch was very good at keeping up with her studies.
"Very good, Apollonia, take five points for Slytherin for your answer." Jake replied with a warm smile, his eyes then scanning the room for the next answer.
Jurian's excitement had always been palpable, and today was no exception as he gave an answer whilst trying to contain the excitement of his where he stood. The Defence professor tried his best to conceal his amusement, but the glint in his eye as he called upon the boy would likely not go amiss. Listening as the Ravenclaw supplied the effects of the spell, Jake nodded along with the answer. "That is a very good way of looking at the spell, Jurian, well done! Take five points for Ravenclaw for your answer!" Jake replied, before catching sight of his daughter's hand.
"Mimosa," he prompted, before waiting for her usual tirade of... well, Mimosa.
For a moment, Jake thought about her answer, before slowly nodding. A thoughtful nod that gave way to a small chuckle of appreciation as the young witch denoted that she would be able to do the spell the best in this class. "Well, what Mimosa said is correct, you do need to be able to hit your opponent directly, so I think she deserves five points for her answer as well.
"As for whether you can do it the best..." The professor waved the young Slytherin up to the front of the room, and then motioned to Jurian. "Lets see if you can stop Mr Taggart from bouncing full of energy around the room, how does that sound?" The professor proposed, waiting for the two of them to come to the front of the room before he continued.
"Now, everyone please watch Mimosa's wand movement carefully, and see how well she can perform the spell on Jurian. If she creates a strong form of the Jinx, he will stop moving, if not, he will still be able to move, just not quite so quickly." Jake explained to the room. "Whenever you two are ready..." ________________________________________________~ Auror ~ Profile ~ DADA Professor ~ ~ In a Relationship ~ 36 ~ Father ~ 6' ~ American Accent ~

| A small grin touched Mimosa's perfectly symmetrical features as Jake gave her five points too. But even better than the points was that he moved straight from her question into a demonstration, not giving Lilac a chance to speak up. Good. The servant girl probably didn't have anything helpful to contribute anyway.
At the opportunity to show off her skill, Mimosa rose from her chair readily, throwing a bright gaze Mercy's way for luck before walking to the front of the class. Jake probably knew how much better she was at the jinx than other people too and wanted everyone to see her awesomeness. He was definitely her favorite teacher by far.
"Ready when you are," she called to the hyper Ravenclaw, drawing her wand across ehr narrow frame in a perfect dueling stance. Before this class, she had no idea what the incantation was but Loni had supplied it earlier, which made the brunette even more confident.
As she readied her wand, Gaspard looked on wearily, almost as if he didn't think she could pull it off. She would show him though, she was the best at everything.
"Impedimenta!" ________________________________________________
