Surely it couldn't be that difficult to stop seeing her as a sister and start seeing her as something else? If he really wanted to.

The teen shook her head. She had believed that her entire life. And the look in her eyes was a lifetime's worth of trust shattering before her in one fell swoop.

Victoria looked up as the doors flew open to their apartment. Usually choosing to knock, Sloan had a look upon her face that said matters needed to be handled.

"He told me to wait here, and that he would be bac-"

"Happy Valentine's Da- SLOAN!"

Jackson stood with only a small dickie bow tied around his neck, and a rose in his mouth.

Victoria hid a smile behind her hand.

"North Korea have just set off a nuke test."

"They do that every week!"

"This time it's urgent."

Victoria had already rushed past Jackson to find clothes.

"What's the easiest way to get over her?"

The Frenchman was quite drunk as he turned his phone around, showing the picture of Kiranjeet that had been his phone background for quite a while now. He would miss the pity in his sister's eyes as he turned it back around, but not the soft touch of her hand as she gently coaxed the phone from his fingers.

"You have to sever all ties."

Jacques didn't quite understand, but as Azalea turned the phone back with the message of confirming the phone delete the folder called Kiranjeet he nodded.

The front page of every newspaper spoke of it -- some were crass, some were delicate. But it all said the same about the First Family that lay broken.

They had a lost a child, or a sibling.

But Jackson was also losing himself.

Unfairly dragging them all through it, too.

"Do you want me to say something to dad, mom?" Tessa asked, carefully wiping away a tear from her cheek.

Victoria shook her head.

"It's okay, your dad has beaten this once, we'll make sure he does so again."

"Mom-"

"It's okay, Tessa. He'll work it out of his system."

The words blurred into each other as the funeral service continued. And it wasn't just because he was drunk. Jackson doubted he would have heard his daughter's service more clearly if he hadn't donned half a bottle of whiskey before leaving for the church.

Victoria had done her best, removing the smell and fixing his collar. As if she could fuss the pain away.

And she hadn't let go of his hand once, becoming his sole focus throughout.

It was very out of character for Victoria to raise her voice like this, but she had tried every other option she possibly could to get Jackson to snap out of the stupor he'd been in in the months that had passed.

"The truth is that whilst you have been drinking yourself blind for the last eight months, I've looked after our six other children. On my own. Because not only did we lose a daughter that day, I also lost the man I married.

"If something doesn't change... I... don't know how much more I can take."

"Well, clearly you've thought about it." Azalea quipped back, and Jake didn't pretend to look sorry for his musings in the slightest.

"We haven't been on vacation together in... well, actually, I don't think we have been on holiday at all since you've been back. Now that Jacques is... doing better, can't we just get away, the two of us?

"I'm sure Clara will be happy to look after Adrienne for a bit!"

"Fine! But tell me more about the bikini..."

A grin spread across Jake's features.
